I would add that not all rough-likes are completely random. With Spelunky for instance, although levels are procedurally generated, they're put together from a set number of chunks. Anyone that's spent time on that game comes to learn the layout of each 'piece', and has some idea of what might be coming next.
I used to have exactly the same mindset as you, but honestly, playing that one game, watching how its systems interact with each other, but never quite knowing exactly what I'm getting on the next run - it never gets old.
I'm a bit puzzled by some of these 'finally another decent ACA title' comments. Some of the recent titles may not have been as well known as Raiden, but we've had The Asyanax, Hacha Mecha Fighter, and Task Force Harrier over the last six weeks, cracking games all of them.
Last (Mario) one I played properly was on the N64. I did literally nothing other than play the normal golf modes on that. If this has got the basics nailed, I'm not really fussed about everything else. I enjoyed Everybody's Golf on the PS4, so as long as it's as competent as that, I'm good.
And it controlled really, really badly. It was dreadfully sluggish after the pinpoint accuracy of the originals. I've got this on PS4 and have no need for a mobile version, but I'm really happy that some proper effort appears to have been put into the Switch version - hopefully it'll sell enough to maybe encourage a few more conversions.
I loved mine back in the day, but I don't think a lot of its games, and indeed 3D games of that era, have aged well at all. I was astonished to realise how crappy the camera on Mario 64 really is in this day and age.
It was also the worst trade-in I ever made, a Saturn and some 30 games, PLUS £100.00 for an N64 with Mario.... what a moron.
As not to end on a negative note however, the console still plays host to the best wrestling game of all-time (either WCW vs NWO or WWF No Mercy), the best arcade football game of all-time in ISS 98, and one of the most under-rated 2D games ever in Go Go Troublemakers.
Doesn't seem much love for the originals here. Still my favourite, I think the embellishments added by ever subsequent sequel diluted the idea a little.
Well, in fairness, Mania is probably the absolute best, but I hold the original pretty close.
Not sure where you've heard that about Galuda 2 man, it's an absolute ball-breaker. Mushi Futari Black Label is one of the more manageable ones, I've even seen the last boss on that (though not beaten it). Galuda 2 is up there with DoDonPachi Saidaioujou for me. I really hope Muchi Muchi Pork comes across now, that''s an amazing game that I sadly had to sell on Xbox last year.
There's an unconverted arcade game DoDonPachi II: Bee Storm, and a mobile version on Dai-Ou-Jou which has just been released for Switch under the G-Mode label.
That's awesome! Yeah a track designer - even a limited one - for Mario Kart would be ace, but one for F-Zero GX HD would be even better. I remember the X-cup in F-Zero X - that threw out some utterly crazy designs where you'd round a corner and be instantly thrown off the track because it had placed a jump at just the wrong place.
Honestly? I think it'll end up a £250.00 foot spa with a couple of updated games I'll play every now and again (Cloudy Mountain, Night Stalker, Astrosmash from the first batch), but I'd be happy to be proven wrong.
Fingers crossed, LR will pick it up as they did with the Astro City. In fairness, I didn't pay much more imported than the official price anyway, so I'll probably go the Ebay route.
I've a full MAME build for my Wii U, but I still like to support the devs re-releasing these things officially. They're usually a lot less fuss to play on Switch as well.
Horizon Chase Turbo should be much better known. Dig Dog is brilliant, procedural Boulder Dash / platformer and currently on sale. Super Arcade Racing is as good as any of the Neo-Geo classic top-down racers. Finally, Whip Whip - brilliant single-screen 80's inspired platformer.
Hey, less of the sarcasm, I'm looking forward to mine! Though I freely admit it a purchase I'll be making with rose-tinted goggles firmly held in place.
What would be nice is if they uploaded some of the Satelleview content. I've managed the odd go of BS F-Zero over the years, but it'd be a nice addition to the Switch library, along with the Mario-themed Excitebike. Go on Nintendo, surprise us!
Top of my head, not a clue. I bought a bunch of their books years ago though, and got pretty annoyed at them. I'll have a flick through out of interest later.
Always up for a good arcade racer, Milestone have some really under-rated stuff, Gravel in particular was quite brilliant once you got past the muddy visuals. I'll be keeping an eye on this.
Finally, someone else that appreciates how brilliant that game is! SOR4 is great, but a little long for single sessions. But yeah, the belt-scroller hasn't really evolved in any meaningful way since then, though it's hard to think how you could top DDA and some of Capcom's peak output, really.
Hmmm as someone who's first console was an Intellivision, I've had the Amico pre-ordered for quite some time now. However, the founders edition of this is seriously tempting, but I can only pick one up. Going to have to think long and hard about this one.
@__jamiie It certainly wasn't terrible, even on N64. The problem at the time it launched on N64 was that PS had Ridge Racer/Revolution, and Saturn had Daytona/Sega Rally, and it looked tremendously dated in comparison. The arcade version was brilliant, but it never gained much traction due to the 3D racers coming through at the time - the same fate as the fantastic OutRunners.
Throw in the originals as unlockables and I'd be all over this even at full price. Great games, often overlooked when it comes to Arcade Racing retrospectives.
@AtlanteanMan Ha ha ha most probably. Oh well, I can dream. Although, they did say when they ended the AGES range that they still had plans for more re-releases. I think Virtua Racing took them quite a bit of work, so maybe they'll happen at a more expensive price-point rather than the budget-priced AGES releases.
@Tandy255 Couldn't disagree more; The various AA titles are some of my most-played, it's also great that they go for some of these lesser-known titles rather than the usual suspects. In comparison to the Capcom comp they could seem expensive I guess, but there are so many licenses involved here, a different ball game to a company re-releasing its own older IP.
Enjoyed what I played of the first Dig. Still got the second in the queue. Heist keeps going on sale for silly money so will probably end up picking that up.
@Damo Last time I checked mine they were still there, I've never had a previously purchased title removed from my actual downloads as far as I'm aware.
So can these physical ones by the looks of it.... In fairness, I'm struggling to think of even one title I've purchased that I can no longer play. Although I really should fire up the 360 and confirm that all the non back-compat games are present and correct. Long as my Afterburner and Outrun 2 HD are still functioning, all is well.
I don't understand why anyone would shell out for a physical release after it's been available digitally for so long. The major point of the Switch, for me, is portability, and having all these arcade games available instantly without any cart swapping. My physical collection is mainly first-party stuff. The one title I did opt for physical - despite my instincts - was the Turrican Anthonogy, and I've since given in and rinsed the digital release before my carts have even shown up!

Yeah, after the Shottriggers series, I was pretty amazed that this landed at £15.

Also Raiden on AA this week, and Raiden IV in July!

Can't get my head around Crimson Clover for the life of me though. I've been told the arrange mode is a little easier on the eyes?
Re: Days After Launch, Mushihimesama Has Been "Temporarily Suspended" From Sale On Switch (Europe)
@DenimDemon sorry adopts pedantic voice - Sisters Royale is Alfa System of Shikigami No Shiro fame. Fun little game as well.

@BloodNinja
Trying to get into Crimson Clover at the minute, but my god it's busy visually.

I'm sure Crimson Clover is mate, 99% certain it's on my wish list.
Re: Cave's Acclaimed Shooter, Mushihimesama, Is Out Now On Switch
@PessitheMystic
Oh, it gets stupid when listing those. I remember picking up Resurrection with the DLC on 360, and from the title menu I could select:
Novice
Arrange
Original
Original 1.5
Black Label
Black Label 1.5
It made my head hurt. I dabbled with Black Label and it was so different to the main game it was untrue!
Re: Cave's Acclaimed Shooter, Mushihimesama, Is Out Now On Switch
@PessitheMystic
Haha, easily done. You have:
DonPachi (PS1 / Saturn)
DoDonPachi (PS1 / Saturn)
DoDonPachi Dai-Ou-Jou (PS2 / X360 region locked)
DoDonPachi Daifukkatsu / Ressurection (X360)
DoDonPachi Saidaoujou (X360 region-free)
There's an unconverted arcade game DoDonPachi II: Bee Storm, and a mobile version on Dai-Ou-Jou which has just been released for Switch under the G-Mode label.
