Definitely start with the original. It's quite streamlined in its systems, whereas the sequel adds so much stuff it can be a bit bewildering - I still struggle with it after completing the original via the secret world.
If you take to Spelunky 1, you've got the joy of knowing there's an even more wild sequel to try. If you don't, you're down less cash.
Myself, I bought the original on X360 and PS4, and the sequel on PS4, and I'll still be buying these. Two of the greatest games of the last two generations IMO. Utter, utter brilliance.
We were playing SA on the X1X over the weekend, she wasn't overly impressed with it. Never got on with them myself in all honesty. She's loving Generations at the minute, but the frame-rate on the 2D bits makes my head hurt.
My 8bitdo pad is great, but having picked up the JPN version of the SNES pad, it becomes clear that the d-pad as massively inferior on the 8bitdo. They're loose, and still register the occasion unwanted diagonal. In comparison, the official controller has a rock-solid d-pad, exactly the same as the SNES original. Absolute quality.
@BloodNinja Although I was terrible at it, I really enjoyed Muchi Muchi Pork. Unlike some of the more convoluted scoring systems Cave have used, this felt really natural and had a really good flow to it.
Love Mushi Black Label, though I'm not overly sold on the scoring system.
Really looking forward to the Toaplan games, I've not played Kyukyoku Tiger since getting rid of all my PC Engine gear, and I've been waiting for a home version of Flying Shark since I was a kid. I made do with the monochrome Spectrum version back then!
@BloodNinja That's just the last month...... I've picked up pretty much everything on AA / Ages, I've still got my Cave X360 games (had to sell the imports sadly) and whatever I picked up online there (I know I need to go back and play Strania), a bunch of stuff on PS4.....
What I really need to do is settle on one damn shooter to completion!
I've heard that about Minter's game, but never quite experienced it. I made it about a third of the way through Space Giraffe (really couldn't tell what was going on there), I've managed about halfway through Polybius (that clicked a little when I played it in VR), and I'm so embarrassingly useless at Tempest 4k it's not even funny.
Wait, I did 1CC Minotron 2112 on iPhone, and got about three quarters through Gridrunner.
I never thought I'd say this, but at the moment... I've too many shmups! In the last few months, I've picked up:
Natsuki Chronicles (PS4) Task Force Harrier Mushihimesama Rolling Gunner Cotton Reboot Moose Life (PS4) Devil Engine R-Type FInal (PS4) Raiden IV Raiden
Why are people bringing up Sonic Colours? The two games are entirely different. One of them is a Gamecube game with relatively simple geometry and tiny areas, and one isn't.
Personally, I'm glad I've got the 8bitdo adaptor, there's absolutely no way I can play Monkey Ball without the octagonal notches around the GC's analogue stick.
I checked my other board (shmups.com). First mention was 14/02/2012, and those boards had a massive crash and lots all the old posts somewhere around that time, otherwise I'm sure I'd be going a LOT further back.
Alien vs Predator smokes it. Final Fight is very limited in its move-set, and sections that repeat endlessly. It's fun to play with mates, but a slog for a serious 1CC attempt.
It's called personal opinion. Final Fight, despite being iconic, is nowhere near Capcom's best IMO - they've release games with more varied movesets, more depth, and more accessibility. Final Fight is definitely the best-known of the bunch, but it's certainly not the most fun to actually play. Vendetta plays just as well, if not better.
It really isn't made up though. Hence Capcom's 'Belt-Scrolling' Collection. Quite a common term among those who specialise in stuff like this and has been for years and years.
My physical Cotton landed last weekend, great shooter so far, a bit of a breather after the battering Raiden gave me.
Nice to see this week's Arcade Archives title get a mention, and it's a brilliant belt-scroller, if you've any interest in these you really should pick this up.
Bit of a generalisation there, if that were the case, the Switch wouldn't be the massive success it has. I'm far more likely to play any longer game (that isn't graphically intensive) on a device I can play short chunks around the house.
What when that Company literally doesn't exist anymore? What if they do exist, but show no interest in making that title available again? Rainbow Islands is one of my favourite games of all time, last time Taito bothered to make that available was on PS2. I'm not going to stop playing it on MAME because of that. I will, however, pick it up should it appear on Arcade Archives.
I agree there. I' own for instance a modded Wii U with a pretty sizeable Retroarch build on there. However, Arcade Archives Vendetta releases today/tomorrow and I'll be all-over that like a rash. I'll support official releases where I can, but if a dev/publisher has long since gone bust, I've no qualms emulating.
How did a DK article end up with comments like these..... Anyway, I'd forgotten about that GB game. It was brilliant, and I'm going to replay it on my Wii U now.
I'm presuming it's the same version as on the Piko Evercade cart. If so, it's absolutely dreadful. The visuals, sound and gameplay are all far, far worse than the original. Even the Spectrum version was a better port than this.
They're terrible. My wireless started drifting after a matter of months. My wired has massive dead zones on the sticks and just feels cheap and tacky. Biggest waste of cash ever.

Looks neat, be picking this up for sure.

Re: More Top-Down 2D Action Joins The Arcade Archives On Switch This Week
UPL games tend to be interesting, if a little wobbly mechanically (Omega Fighter aside, which is brilliant). I'll probably bite.
Re: Cave's Shmup Espgaluda II Is Targeting A September Switch Release In Japan
Had this on 360, balls hard, probably one of the hardest Cave shooters I've played. I'll end up buying it anyway.
Re: Reminder: Space Invaders Invincible Collection Launches Today On Switch eShop In The West
I loved Extreme on the 360. Was the DS version different? I've got the three-game collection, but not fired it up as of yet.
Re: Hades Is Getting Its Very Own Power-A Switch Controller
@HollowSpectre
Same, absolute rubbish.
Re: Dead Cells' 'What's The Damage?' Update Is Now Live On Switch And Other Consoles
I really, really need to start this. Had it sat on my shelf for 2 years now.
Re: Taito Action Beat 'Em Up Kuri Kinton Joins The Arcade Archives On Switch
Looks like Kung-Fu Master. I'll give it a whirl.
Re: Switch eShop Lists Spelunky 1 And 2 For Release At The End Of August
Honestly, anyone playing these for the first time.... enjoy. I'm jealous.

They sorted the memory stick thing - also it's got to be permanently inserted, it functions as normal. Mine has 10,000+.
Re: Mario Golf: Super Rush Guide - Tips And Hints For Mastering Mario Golf On Switch
My tip? Get rid and buy Everybody's Golf on PS4 instead.
Re: Horizon Chase Turbo Teases A Brand New Expansion
Great game. Got the platinum on every world tour event, definitely up for some more.
Re: In Just Five Days, Mario Golf: Super Rush Became The Second Best-Selling Game In The Series
I sold it and used the money to buy DLC for Everybody's Golf on PS4. Woefully under-baked.
Re: Another Shmup Joins The Arcade Archives Collection On Switch
@BionicDodo
I think it's because it looks so HUGE. Although UPL's Atomic Robo-Kid was similar and was actually quite enjoyable, if quirky.
Re: Another Shmup Joins The Arcade Archives Collection On Switch
I think I'll try this out on my Wii U first. Seems a bit polarising this one.
Re: Cruis'n Blast Track Showcase Emphasizes Its Wacky Side
Only slight concern here is that it looks like it may have the same floaty handling as the San Fran games. Otherwise I'm pretty excited for this.

Was the original any good? Never played it myself, but the kids love a bit of Sonic. Be going PSPro or X1X for this though.

I've got Vendetta on Switch and PS4. Plays just the same on both.

Re: Talking Point: Which Game Stage Have You Replayed More Than Any Other?
Would probably be OutRun's first stage. I've been playing that game, in some form or other, since it released in '86.
F-Zero Mute City 1 would probably be a close second. I used to time trial it, and was pretty damn good if I do say so myself.

To my shame, I've not played a huge amount of it yet. I did get into Polybius though, so I know I'll enjoy it when I have some time to spare.

No other way. I picked up SMB Deluxe on Xbox, and despite being a decent port, it was an utter nightmare on that controller.

Oh god yes. Monkey Target with my kiddies is going to be immense!

Yakuza: Like A Dragon wins this conversation I'm afraid:
Virtua Fighter V FInal Showdown

Space Harrier
That's a decent compilation disc by anyone's standards, to have them all present in-game is pretty mind-boggling.
