Another month, another deluge of software hitting our favourite handheld hybrid console's eShop. The flow of new games coming to Switch has varied over the first months of 2021, but in general there are still far too many games arriving for us to be able to review them all, and unfortunately some of the smaller ones inevitably fall through the cracks.
Last year we asked the Nintendo Life community to nominate Switch games you believed were worth highlighting — games that we'd missed which you felt deserved some love and recognition on these webpages. We did the same six months later when you nominated a further 12 titles, and recently we've been posting summaries of intriguing games that caught our eye. Now we think it's the perfect time to look at another round of Switch eShop hidden gem nominations.
Just as we did previously, we're asking you dear readers to send us your brief musings (no more than 100 words) on Switch games that flew under the Nintendo Life radar. We'll collate and read all the responses and pick our favourites for a feature showcasing those games with a trailer and your positive comments.
Below are the guidelines on how to send your recommendations — please read them carefully if you want to see your entries included in the feature:
Submission guidelines
- 100-word limit - Keep it brief! A history of the genre and deep-dive into every mechanic is unnecessary. Concentrate on what the game is about, what sets it apart from other games and why you enjoyed it.
- One entry per game - Feel free to send your thoughts on multiple games, but there's no need to duplicate.
- Choose only games that we haven't reviewed on the site - To check if a Nintendo Life review exists, simply type the name of the game into the search box at the very top of the page (look for the magnifying glass icon in the top left corner) and click on the game page that appears. If there's no review, you're good to go!
How to send a recommendation
- Head to Nintendo Life's Contact page and select the subject "Switch eShop Hidden Gems" from the drop down menu (it's already done for you in the link above). Type your name, email and beautifully-crafted message into the appropriate box, hit send and Bob's your uncle!
If you've got any questions on the format, feel free to ask in the comments section below. And if you don't feel comfortable sending a full-blown recommendation, you can drop suggestions for games you'd like to see highlighted, too.
Remember, we won't be reviewing these games, but we're still eager to shine a light on some gems we've missed. We look forward to seeing what games you recommend.

Celeste, I hear it's a hidden gem.
@Rika_Yoshitake pretty sure they talked about it at one point. I mean, there is a review on this site
@Rika_Yoshitake I've heard Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a hidden gem too
I think I suggested this 3-4 times but, SaGa: Scarlet Grace please. Thanks!
@Solaine
I think @Rika_Yoshitake is being sarcastic.
Do exclamation points count as a word? My last review was just "it's awesome" but it didn't get picked which I reckon was due to the word count so a few !!! may lengthen it.
Grand Prix Story!
B-but... The only place I hear about hidden gems is Nintendolife
@Solaine That person was joking it's more well known than some triple a titles
@Ghostchip @Rosona thanks... i guess i am a bit blind to that sometimes hehe
@Rika_Yoshitake /r/tommorrow
Roundguard is pretty cool
This site deserves more SmileBASIC!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rk8t73MV_o
Trouble Days! Although im pretty sure this was a gem only for me
Legend of keepers!
Surprised NintendoLife hasn't given us a review of World's End Club yet. I hear it's not the greatest, but I very much enjoy the demo, and would be keen to get NL's opinion on it.
Regions of Ruin is a game that doesn't have a review and definitely deserves one! A side scrolling RPG with town building and lots of fun quests.
Horizon Chase Turbo should be much better known. Dig Dog is brilliant, procedural Boulder Dash / platformer and currently on sale. Super Arcade Racing is as good as any of the Neo-Geo classic top-down racers. Finally, Whip Whip - brilliant single-screen 80's inspired platformer.
Pizza Titan Ultra is a great game, combining a Saturday morning cartoon aesthetic with gameplay involving stomping around a city as a giant robot destroying buildings and delivering pizza.
A great game you guys should play is the switch port of RPG Maker MV. though i am sure you reviewed it. its a great port!
I submitted a short summary for DISTRAINT 2 the day after the original article was published. It’s so overlooked it didn’t make their second list either, lol.
It took me a few seconds to realize 'noms' was short for 'nominations'. I was sitting here wondering why they wanted us to send our food lol
I submitted Ghost of a Tale. I honestly cannot do that game justice
@GrailUK
I've got a physical copy of Ghost of a Tale by virtue of Super Rare Games collecting, what am I missing?
Grimvalor is a really good Metroidvania with Dark Souls vibes.
You can check out the demo on the eshop!
@RupeeClock Elderscrolls Lite - it's a more self contained, focused story about finding your missing wife instead of 'you can be anything'. Lots of sneaking, some puzzle solving and you play as an adorable mouse. You can find disguises and dress up as a pirate. Nuff said. There isn't really any combat in the game though, if that's more your thing.
As a fan of the music/rhythm genre I might recommend Muse Dash, it gave a strong first impression, but I haven't played enough to pass judgement.
Car Quest: you're a car collecting objects to open new areas. Fun little game, great for kids
Has anyone played The House in Fata Morgana? It has a 100% critic rating on metacritic but doesn’t have many reviews. I hear it’s great though.
@Solaine Lol no problem.
Almost every hidden gem list I have read has Stardew Valley on top, so you should probably mention it. I know it's extremely obscure, but you give it a try.
Mary skelter.a very good drpg.and there aren't that many on switch,so makes it even more special.
@GrailUK Yeah I really don't understand the lack of coverage Ghost of a Tale received on Switch. It's a phenomenal game! Even sources like Switch Corner, GameXplain, and SwitchUP that normally cover EVERYTHING didn't do reviews on the game.
The amazing thing to me is it takes elements I typically don't like (heavily story based, not combat focused, stealth, animal characters, etc) and pulled them off so well I adored it. I never get attached to characters in games, but in Ghost of a Tale I actually cared about every back story and every line of dialogue.
The Big Game! I just see a profile for it, no review. The machanics are awesome and the dialogue is adorable. I love the sound track as well. The game takes maybe a couple of hours?
I'm a physical only gamer so i don't have any digital reccomendations but there are plenty of physical hidden gems that I've picked up over the last four years.Descenders the mountain bike game is great as is Horizon Chase Turbo the classic style arcade racer. There are many more too.
It has been reviewed on here (and given a 10/10) but I still consider Horace a hidden gem that everyone should play.
It has so much character, challenging - but not unfair - platforming and it steadily introduces new mechanics to keep things fresh. It is extremely emotive too. Amazing game.
@sketchturner Yeah, it really sucked me in too
I'm nominating the game Stability; regular updates, great graphics and an outstanding soundtrack. The only criticism I can make is that the gameplay is lacking.
Risk of rain 2. Awesome pick up and play game.
Reverie: Sweet As Edition. Plays like zelda but looks like earthbound. Really nice little game.
Here's four that I think y'all may need to give a try, they aren't exactly what you would say as popular classics or even hidden gems but they are very enjoyable to me enough to list it here.
Fighting EX Layer: Another Dash - It's basically Street Fighter EX for the Switch just without the Street Fighter characters and Capcom theme. Like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Terry Bogard is available as a guest fighter in the game.
Shaolin vs. Wutang: Eastern Heroes - A 2D combo heavy fighting game paying homage to great martial art fighting styles used in classic Kung Fu and martial arts film like Bloodsports, Enter the Dragon, Once Upon a Time in China, Ip Man, Wing Chun, Shaolin Temple, Tai Chi Master, Way of the Dragon, etc.
Spintires: SnowRunner - The sequel to MudRunner, an open world terrain driving game that is loaded with great new features, more terrain vehicles to master, more areas to explore and great fun gameplay brought to you by the dev that give us the Witcher III for Switch.
Welcome to Hanwell - A survival horror game that pays homage to Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Dropping you into a creepy atmosphere of the world of Hanwell, you must find your way out of this nightmarish place comes complete with all the spook features that could scare you if you're still a horror fanboy or fangirl at heart. It's a short but sweet little horror adventure that is not for the faint of heart.
Not a "hidden gem" per say, but my Switch has quietly turned into a hybrid arcade with all the classic arcade games on the console. These games are great to pick up, play for 10-15 minutes before moving on. Really only the Midway/Williams games from the 80s-90s and QBert are missing.
@Krisesk I’m also amazed at how little fanfare this game gets. It’s the perfect platformer for the older crowds. Finding psychedelic mushrooms for a quest should be enough to intrigue some players....😂😂😂
FUZE Player. You can play all the games others make for just $1. No need to invest in all of the programming tools.
@Jayenkai SmileBASIC should sell a player too.
She Remembered Caterpillars.
Really unique visuals and quite tough puzzles. Not for everyone but great for puzzle fans.
I only play games that have already been noticed by Nintendo Life, so nothing the site doesn’t know about already from me.
Speed Limit! If you're looking for a game that you can enjoy in small sessions (can complete it in a single sitting), but come back to it again and again like the old arcade/NES/SNES titles to improve your times and score or just for the fun of it, I would definitely recommend it. I called it R.U.F.F! after I finished it in February. Retro. Unforgiving. Fantastic. Fun!
You can download the demo on the Switch (and pretty much every other system), and give it a try.
The dev's description says, "Speed Limit is our breakneck mile-a-minute tour through the genres of retro action games: Run and gun in a side-scrolling shooter, weave through traffic in a faux-3D bike racer, dodge incoming missiles in an isometric shoot ‘em up, and more. Speed Limit is purpose built to scratch the retro itch."
I might send it over in a minute, and thought those reading the comments might enjoy the demo of it now.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi I sent in for Shaolin vs Wutang. But I’m looking at the rest of your list and I haven’t played any of those. Hanwell especially (isn’t it often dirt cheap on sale?) has caught my eye numerous times, but I assumed it was more of the same shovel-crap that had already managed to fool me twice (shame on me). Thanks for taking the time for these recos. I will be checking them out.
Neon Chrome sucked me in more than it should have with its gorgeous soaked cyberpunk atmosphere. The best rendition of cyberpunk this generation along side Ion Fury. I hear there’s another cyberpunk themed game that came out and it mega flopped hahahah. A journalist who got a preview had an epileptic fit at some moment in that game that didn’t have a skip function, what idiot devs not considering other people. Plus they mocked trans people which is a huge no-no. So yeah the journalist mentioned that and got spammed with epileptic fit triggering animations. I wish nothing but the worst for anyone who did that.
Both Skyforce games. They’re vertical amiga-styled shooters. Apparently there’s something called Jamestown and Ikaruga (sp) so people overlooked it. Here’s me thinking what the *****! They’re so addictive.
As for others let me look at my Switch games in playtime order….. (I have hundreds of games on this thing. 1tb storage)
Neuro Voider hooking roguelike.
Kero Blaster by the maker of cave story. Really addictive platform shooter.
Gone Home - one word, WOW. Never ever before have I been so drawn into a fictional world. More so than my reading and watching of Lord of the Rings, or any Kubrick or Nolan film. I scoured every corner of the map, read every note. I was sure to play this after taking a pregabalin, it helps memories not stick. This way I was able to play twice! A thing I never do! Excellent game. I might even fire up a new game on it tonight curled up in front of one of my fireplaces in the most comfiest room ones in! Sit back and enjoy again! I so expected a creepy resolution to it.
I liked Celeste’s story a bit. It was nice and modern, made by very good sounding developers who have good morals and beliefs. The kind that we all just want to support and well-wish regardless of liking their gameplay or not. However I didn’t like the gameplay that much. Same with Witcher 3, I just didn’t like the gameplay in it. I expected another Skyrim but no it was not.
@kingbk Honestly, Android is still better for that since MAME on everything that has it including Android can pretty much play any arcade game from the 90s and downwards and you are not stuck with the arcade game ports that the Nintendo Switch's eShop gives you!
Lethal League Blaze.
There, I said it.
I love these articles and especially the comment section. Learn about all kinds of cool little games. Thanks everyone for sharing!
Banner of the Maid. Fire Emblem how it should be.
Jet Cave Adventure is good...it has a Donkey Kong Feel to it. Not sure it’s a hidden gem, but but no review for Railway Empire?
If My Heart Had Wings
A darling visual novel about a boy named Aoi who comes back to his hometown, meets old and new friends, enrolls in school, joins a club where they build and fly gliders, and falls in love (you can choose between Kotori, a paraplegic you meet in the beginning of the game; Ageha, your childhood friend; Amane, the head of the Soaring Club; and the twin girls Asa and Yoru who are first-years at the school).
The art style is beautiful, the music is amazing, the characters are fun and lively, each with their own personalities, and the story is engaging, making you want to know what happens next. It is ripe for an anime adaptation, in my opinion.
Of course, the more graphic content (as in, s*x and n*d*ty) has been removed for the North American localization, but a patch does exist to restore it; however, this patch is only for the PC version of the game.
@iuli Wow this looks great! I can’t buy it on the Canadian eshop though.
Everhood is an rpm similar in style to undertale, where the combat is essentially guitar hero if the notes were the attacks. You have to dodge each, while the surreal and bizarre graphics twist around you. I highly recommend it!
@GamingDude800
I've a full MAME build for my Wii U, but I still like to support the devs re-releasing these things officially. They're usually a lot less fuss to play on Switch as well.
@iuli Ridiculous. Absurd. I hope it’s worth it for the devs to go through the effort. I’ll be buying as soon as it’s available
Shift Happens. Despite the almost NSFW title, it's been a good fun couch co-op platform puzzler I've been playing with my offspring. It looks a bit like Unravel Two (which i haven't played) mixed with Portal. The big negative is to make sure she clearly pronounces the 'F' in the title, so we don't get into trouble with her teachers at school!
Shaq Fu One of the best if not the best game on the switch. I just can’t put this game down. Greatest fighting game ever made.
@ryanshedlock Don’t fall for it. This game sucks. I say that as a fan of the old Genesis game. This beat-em-up reboot is real crap
@gamecrawler
Added to wishlist, thankyou!
@Magician I second this!
I adore this game, by far my favourite Rhythm game and I own pretty much all of them on the switch.
Transistor
But I believe it got coverage at some point
It's not so much a "hidden gem", but I don't see Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition getting much attention these days! Sure, it has a review on this site so isn't eligible, but I never see it getting talked about.
It's kinda mobile-y which is generally a turnoff for me, but I got a lot of mileage out of the simple and addictive Flat Heroes. Does that count as a hidden gem? Fantastic music and visuals, hectic single-player and local co-op, great style. And frequently on sale! I feel like the equally excellent (and similar) Just Shapes and Beats gets more of the spotlight, but Flat Heroes is high pick-up-and-play value, in my book.
STREET CLEANER!!
I submitted Down in Bermuda
@Magician I wasn't aware of Muse Dash. It looks terrific, though I'm not 100% sold on the music, based on the eshop trailer. It's on my wishlist now though, thanks.
For all of you people who can appreciate and enjoy a good point & click adventure, look no further than the rather beautiful game Silence. Very nice art style, great story.
Just look at that trailer:
If that doesn't wet your appetite, then I don't know what does...
I have 2 recomendations: Goblin Sword and Strikey Sisters. The first one combines Mario and Dragon Quest. Strikey Sisters is the most fun local coop in the system. Elliot Quest is a good recomendation to Zelda fans too.
@holygeez03 I was looking at that in the sale just the other day, it looks really good I was surprised nothing had been said about it!
I submitted for Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight
@dartmonkey I understand you don't want games you've reviewed already, but what about games you have reviewed, but at the time of writing compared to today, are now extremely outdated? Specifically, games that received poor (generally) review scores due to being an early version or are now omitting a ton of new content due to updates that happened after said review? My nomination for that would be A Robot Named Fight. Not only has it received many new areas, items, enemies and QoL since your review, it's also getting a physical release soon!
@kingbk I would almost KILL for the Midway/Atari arcade classics!! But with Warner Bros Games in such turmoil my hopes are at a low! But wow that would be soooo awesome and the MAIN missing piece of the Switch arcade powerhouse that it already has become. The missing lineup is just insane:
Defender
Bubbles
Joust
Gauntlet
Paperboy
Hydro Thunder
Tapper
Satans Hollow
Gorf
Wizard of War
Omega Race
Stargate
Robotron 2084
Smash TV
Total Carnage
Rampage
Toobin
Spy Hunter
Sinistar
Xybots
Xenophobe
Timber
Klax
San Francisco Rush
Artic Thunder
Marble Madness
Narc
Race Drivin
And there’s a ton more!! Oh man that would be awesome! Would love to see Q-Bert too lol
@SpringDivorce picking up Super Arcade Racing right now thanks to you and a look at the trailer! 3 Bucks on sale!! Cheers! 😊👍
@joey302 Agreed. WB Games seems more interested in Mortal Kombat games and Lego games. The last arcade compilation they released was back in 2012.
Thanks to everyone who mentioned Ghost of a Tale: had literally never heard of this before and having just watched the trailer and a couple of vids I'll be picking it up this weekend.
@kingbk right the Midway Arcade Origins collection which luckily I have both PS3 and 360 discs but I even downloaded it on 360 which as you probably know, is backwards compatible to play on Xbox one and Series x/s. Bonus!
But yea the fact that that collection is 10 years ago is another reason why I don’t see it happening. The awesome classics they own just sit dormant. 😟
How long do we have for submitting entries?
@joey302
Enjoy! Cracking little game.
Juiced!
great and funny retro platformer that's not very well known
I just want to say that I've enjoyed Marble it up!, Kakurasu World (the other puzzle games made by the same devs, all prices at 1 or 2 dollars, are not as good in my experience), Zombie Hill Race, Ninja JaJamaru Collection, Paperball Deluxe, West of Dead, Colorful Colore, Dezatopia, Void Gore, Many Faces, Rabisco+, Goblin Sword, Fatum Betula, Active Neurons, We Are Doomed, PuPaiPo Space Deluxe, Tens!, Super Bit Blaster XL, Element, Witcheye, and Holedown.
Aside from my arcade mentions above, I recently dived into all the Artifex Mundi Adventure games on a chance when one was on sale for $2 Vs the normal $15. Enjoyable games if you like the classic item search and lite story & puzzles (not a big puzzle element guy either) but now I’ve been grabbing them all for $2 a piece lol
@SpringDivorce & i love your Outrun pic! One of my favorite games of all time!!!! 👍👍
Xenoblade Chronicles. Due to their price 60 bucks.
Ice Climber
Bottom Text
Game Dev Tycoon. It's really fun, there's achievements to collect and a fun main mode. If you want to go hard on yourself, there's pirate mode, where you try to stay afloat in a world where you barely get sales because of pirates.
Omega Strike
Wandersong
Gris
Tesla vs LoveCraft
Neon Chrome
@Rika_Yoshitake Yeah I have 10 of them for my 20 switches. All to support those starving indie devs
@theriku260 You can submit that on the contact us page.
After the 10/10 review Nintendo Life gave Subsurface Circular, I was surprised to not find a review for the sequel, Quarantine Circular, back when I was looking a little while ago.
I still haven't played it yet, but after how good the first game was, I'll be sure to get to the 2nd game, review or no review.
