Re: Reaction: The NX Could Benefit from Using Cartridges Instead of Discs

Snader

I said it before and I say it again: I think people are drawing the wrong conclusion from the comment of Macronix' CEO Miin Wu. Every console of Nintendo since the Nintendo 64 (as far as I know) has some form of ROM onboard to for example store the OS. The chances the comments of Miin Wu regarding increasing ROM sales refer to a simultaneous launch of the NX console in Japan, Europe and the US are way likelier than Nintendo launching a console using cartridges. Especially if the rumor of Nintendo's intention to ship 20 million NX consoles in a year turn out to be true. You need to have enough stock to be able to deliver, otherwise we get the same situation as with Wii launch.

Re: Nintendo Wants Mobile to be a "Pillar of Profit"

Snader

@Henmii Is it? They manage to get 10 million people to download it, but I'm wondering how many are still actively using it. And that said, what is the revenue model of Miitomo? There are no advertisements that generate money, so is it only micro transactions? Does anyone use those? So I'm wondering how profitable Miitomo really is.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Fortress of Secrecy Needs to Tighten Security for the Year Ahead

Because the trademarks for Pokemon Sun and Moon were reveiled one day before the Pokémon Direct, of which we knew would only be 6 minutes long and in which these two new Pokémon titles turn out to be the biggest announcement, there weren't any surprises left and everyone was like "so this was it?!?". Whereas if the trademark wasn't reveiled beforehand, excitement would be through the roof during the Nintendo Direct! So I'm very much in support of trying to prevent leaks.

Re: Random: Ronda Rousey "Always Wanted To Be Samus"

Snader

I've never seen Samus do anything other than run, jump en shoot her arm cannon, so I don't really see why you would need a fighter to portray her. And I hope that a Metroid movie will be like the first Alien movie, all atmosphere and fear, not a big explosions Michael Bayhem extravaganza.
Several years ago I would've suggested Elisha Cuthbert for the role of Samus, now I don't really know a good fit.

Re: Talking Point: Considering amiibo Features and the Reality of 'Physical DLC'

Snader

I haven't read all comments, so I'm not sure if anyone entertained the thought that the Twilight Cave was added with the read/write functionality of an Amiibo as its core gameplayfeature. So it isn't even possible to play without an Amiibo. No idea what this gameplayfeature could entail though. But that would be a justification to make the cave only available for people who are willing to buy the Amiibo with the game.

Re: Rumour: The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth May Be Coming to Wii U After All

@Einherjar Seems to me they don't make efficient use of the available memory if it fills up like that. If it is because of the amount of different layers stacked on each other, then they should come up with a more efficient way to overlap sprites than by just adding layers.
There are hundreds of bullet hell shmups with a crazy amount of entities onscreen, that run perfectly fine on older hardware, like Ikaruga on GameCube, so it must be possible for capable programmers.

Re: SmileBASIC Releases on the North American 3DS eShop on 15th October

Snader

To quote Edsger W. Dijkstra, programming GOD:
"It is practically impossible to teach good programming to students that have had a prior exposure to BASIC: as potential programmers they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of regeneration."
and
"I think of the company advertising "Thought Processors" or the college pretending that learning BASIC suffices or at least helps, whereas the teaching of BASIC should be rated as a criminal offence: it mutilates the mind beyond recovery."

So I wouldn't recommend this software

Re: Climate "Not Healthy" For Dedicated Handheld Games Consoles, Says Sony's Shuhei Yoshida

Snader

I wish everyone here would stop fantasizing about a "hybrid"-console. I don't want 1 device to use both at home and on the go, meaning it would be too underpowered for a console or too clunky for on the go. 2 devices using the same ecosystem, sounds much better. Developers making a game for 1 device can easily port it to the other and using 1 account system for both will make a lot of games cross-platform.

Re: Nintendo NX Might Be The First Social VR Platform, Claims Analyst Firm Digi-Capital

Snader

This is not going to happen. Nintendo will not launch a console that is dependent on it's users having additional hardware (smartphones) to function properly. That would be a halfbaked product and that doesn't really suit Nintendo's mentality.

But including a HMD in the hardware bundle will make it to expensive for the average user, so this analyst is way off mark.

Re: Editorial: Nintendo's Strategy Needs to be Global, With a Western Touch in the Boardroom

Snader

@rushiosan "Why no account system?"
They're working on it.

"Why no proper cross-buy between platforms, specially VC titles?"
Could be possible when the account system is launched in autumn or when the NX launches, who knows.

"Why are we locked to a region for e-shop, retail games and systems?"
Because age ratings differ in every region. As an extreme example: a 12+ game in one region could be 7+ in another region. If the eShop wasn't region locked, a 10 year old could buy this 12+ game, because it is 7+ in this other region, while it would be deemed inappropiate in his own region. And this is something that Nintendo wants to prevent.
Same with games forbidden in Australia. If there was no region lock, people could import them from other regions. But those games are forbidden by the government. If your not content with what gets released in your region, complain to your government, not to Nintendo for respecting laws and guidelines.

"I mean, their systems look, feel and play like expensive toys with very limited functions (multimedia, online, social) and dubious durability."
They ARE toys. You're playing with it, aren't you? You are right about the limited functions, but for me I want a console to play GAMES on, not to watch VOD or use internet. I have other devices for that. And I don't know if you have any old Nintendo hardware, but my 29 year old NES, my 23 year old SNES and all other Nintendo consoles a have still work after all those times. Unlike my Xbox360 which lasted 3 years.

Re: Talking Point: The Pros, Cons and Questionable Likelihood of a Nintendo NX Release in Summer 2016

Snader

@readyletsgo Nintendo going all digital is highly unlikely. They were the one keeping to SD instead of HD, because according to them the market penetration of HD wasn't big enough. That same argument can be used to broadband internet penetration, especially in lower developed countries. Also Microsoft considered releasing Xbox One without optical drive until late 2013, but decided against it to "accomodate bandwidth and game size".

Re: Talking Point: It's Too Early to Write Off the Wii U Over The Legend of Zelda's Delay

Snader

What we've seen so far of the next Zelda it seems that the GamePad functionalities will be fully integrated in the gameplay, with the aiming with gyro while shooting arrows and placing beacons on the map. I think it's fair to say they will utilise even more than these (I leave it to the developers to surprise us) in the final version, just to showcase the addition of the GamePad.

And that's why I believe this Zelda will not be released on both Wii U and NX, because that would mean including the GamePad with NX, while haters contribute the bulky GamePad as the biggest reason Wii U is failing. Also Iwata stated NX being "a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept", so I'm interpreting that as not being a continuation of Wii U policies. Unfortunately this will also mean no backwards compatibility I'm afraid...
