The Wii is Nintendo's biggest-selling home console in its history, out-performing lucrative predecessors such as the NES and SNES, while giving the company a lift after the relative struggles of the GameCube. It shook up the games industry - as the 'me too' reactions of Sony and Microsoft to motion control gaming showed - and captured a mainstream audience with its unique games.
It had a fascinating route to release too. YouTube channel Did You Know Gaming? has tackled the Wii in its latest video, which has some interesting snippets of information. These include the fact that the technology in the Wii Remote was original pitched to and rejected by Microsoft and Sony, and it's explained how Shigeru Miyamoto first explored the Mii idea way back in the Famicom days.
It's an intriguing watch, as always, so check it out below.
Thanks to all that sent this in.

I knew most of these. Also, first!
@Dolphin64 hope this gives your life meaning
@faint You had no reason at all to say that. Saying "first!" when there was no comments yet is something some people like to do. I hope leaving that comment gives YOUR life meaning.
@Dolphin64 Comments are supposed to be meaningful so we actually prefer users not to post comments consisting of just first or lol etc.
First comments? People complaining about first comments? Is this Youtube?
Cool. I really liked the wii, it has like my top games of all time, Twilight princess, Metroid prime trilogy, Skyward sword and both mario galaxies
I'm really glad Miis don't actually use your face, it would be too embarrassing to show mines to the whole world lol.
Awesome!
@Jazzer94 Oh.
Wii is one of my favorite consoles and I love motion control and virtual console
Ah, memories...didn't know about Sony and Microsoft rejecting idea, but the lawsuits I did know about. I also knew what Stage Debut was because I saw it in Nintendo Power.
Sony rejects it, then the Playstation Move happens. lol
@Dolphin64
Haters will hate buddy I know your just having a bit of fun and it doesn't do any harm to 'first'.
As for the video. Im becoming a bigger and bigger fan of these guys. I know a lot of people know this stuff already but its nice to see everything done in one clear presentation and for those who don't know gaming I recommend you check out these guys other videos
Still playing Wii games, there's just so many games to explore or play again. It did so many things right.
@97alexk
Yep. With the exception of Metroid all those games you listed were my "very best games" of the last gen, which made the Wii my fav console of the last gen.
I still remember when I bought my Wii... sigh when I saw that cardinal like red, with the new super Mario bros added, I fell in love! That was is 2009, and I still love it.
Wii was a dang good console. Still so many games I need to go back and play and/or finish...
My Wii is still kicking and I bought it shortly after launch. The original Wiimote and Nunchuck are still in good condition, too. I hope this little white box powers on forever...
Didn't know Sony AND Microsoft rejected the motion controls...
Wii = an upgraded Gamecube being sold in an separate case. Give the GCN an brand new motor ( because it's motor is too slow for regular sized DVD ) , co-processor, and set of instructions and you have an Wii. That is why the GCN had the upgrade unit beneath it. In fact an person could probably build an Wii add-on for the GCN and sell it as 3rd party merchandise. Even the DVD drive could fit beneath the GCN as well.
What the heck is a 'Super Famicom Disk Drive'? and why did it show a picture of the 'Famicom Disk System' instead? And why did he call the Famicom a Super Famicom?
Usually I love DYKG? videos, but that is far too egregious an error to just not say anything.
I just sold my Wii which is the pal version. I as of now have no regrets and even if I do, I can get the Wii U to make up with my mistakes. So if anyone here loves the Wii, show me the best games you've got in mind to make me regret that I sold the Wii!
I don't mind the Wii at all. Infact the Wii is the most innovative gaming console out there.
But the problem I have with the Wii is that it doesn't have games that I want to play. Sure I can get me some Kirby, Metroid and Mario but those games aren't as huge as the Gamecube games were and that's why I love the Gamecube better than the Wii.
As much fun as the Mii concept is (didn't MS copy that too, or were avatars co-created?), I really hate the fact that the Mii's arent tied to savegames/accounts the way that is done for PS (not sure about xbox as I never personally owned one, just used a friend's).
@RegalSin
Close, but not qiute. The Wii is based on the same architecture as the Gamecube, but the reason't they used mini-discs has nothing to do with the system being too slow. It was an anti-piracy measure, and smaller disks made for better access times due to having a smaller surface area.
The "upgrade unit" was an expansion for add-ons, such as the GBA player. Its basically the same thing as what allowed the N64DD to attach to the N64. You couldn't just slap a Wii on the bottom and call it a day, it won't work. A DVD add-on you could if games were made to utilized it.
@mjc0961 Maybe Sony succeeded in producing the Move controllers for 50 cents That's why they passed up Tom Quinn's offer in the first place.
@Hotfusion Have you not played metroid prime trilogy?
I wonder if Sony and Microsoft passed on it because they knew it would be a fad (as I'm sure @Quorthon would agree with the fad part). A very popular fad that sold millions and millions of systems, but a fad nonetheless that faded pretty quickly once people got tired of all the waggle. Neither of them focus on motion controls anymore - well the XBO does, but they stripped out the Kinect from their best selling bundles) - and they are both leading the marketplace by a wide margin. Wii U still has them to some extent and trails them both.
Don't get me wrong, I really loved the Wii and it brought so many fresh gaming memories to me and my family. But, while it will always have its fans, it's clear that motion controls are not popular anymore (aside from mobile devices) and become more of a distraction than straightforward traditional gaming controls.
@Zombie_Barioth The Wii is not based on it. It is the same exact thing as an GCN. Beneath the GCN their is three areas for expansions. ( One which was removed from the later GCN models, meaning not all GCN were created equal ). A person with enough knowledge could add another piece of hardware on to one of the original GCN including an full-size DVD tray as well.
If you attempt to mod your GCN ( which is fairly easy ) or remove the casing to load unofficial games and programs including media with large normal sized CD's and DVD the GCN disc motor is unable to keep up with the size of the disc. So it works extra hard just to search for that piece of data on the NORMAL sized disc. The GCN disc drives are not meant for regular sized CDs and DVDs. but Mini-discs.
GCN discs are just mini-DVDs non the same.
The GBA player does not use all ports beneath an regular GCN. Go check your GCN to find their is three ports and if one is missing chance is that you have the later models. When Nintendo decided to give up on production of any add-on unit.
@mjc0961 Oh my, what crawled up yours and died? That's enough.
Should've stuck with the original controller layout.
This is why I don't like Microsucks and Clony, to release a non-functional device and a WiiMote with a ball on top once they saw it worked. Seriously, when I played Kinect it switched it's focus from me to the chair behind me, thinking it was me halfway through the game, and I couldn't get it to detect me. And the PSMove is really just a WiiMote with a ball. Nintendo hit the big one once again with the motion controls.
Weird to think the wii's success is down to one guy's crazy idea in 1999... kerazy, Guess 100 million consoles sold speaks for itself, can't see Nintendo pulling that off again
@bluemage1989 Thanks for the support, everyone knows we all need it these days. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with saying "first" when the thing CLEARLY says: "Wow, no comments yet... Why not be the first?" People who complain about that need something better to do.
@RegalSin
My mistake, when you said "motor" I was thinking car motor, so CPU, not the actual disc-drive motor. The Gamecube was designed for mini-discs, so there wouldn't be a need for one strong enough for standards discs.
Your wrong about the Wii being the exact same thing though, Broadwell is considered the direct ancestor of Gekko. Meaning its the same general architecture, but much more efficient. If I'm not mistaken, its backwards-compatibility works the same as the Wii U's, it basically downclocks to Gamecube levels. People have even modded the new models to play GC games, all they basically did was remove the ports.
That being said, the Wii's motion controls were planned to be an add-on, as well as the ability to play 3D games, which is what two of those ports were probably intended for. Nintendo has a history of including expansion ports for ideas that never quite reach fruition and go unused.
Referring to the Famicom as the Super Famicom and mentioning a Super Famicom disk system is not a minor error for a youtube program that exists to spread little known facts about video game history. I've found some of the information and claims made in other videos to be questionable, but that should have been caught during production and should not have made it into the final video.
