Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow are soon to be available on the 3DS eShop, providing an excellent way of celebrating the 20th anniversary of the franchise. Naturally, there are questions surrounding how well these versions have preserved the originals, and whether or not all the same glitches and bugs are still present. While it still remains to be seen whether or not the infamous 'Mew trick' is still doable, another popular glitch has been proven to still be in the game.
A fan of Nintendo Life named AJ recently posted a video to his YouTube account showing that the famous Pokémon, Missingno, is still possible to encounter in the game. For those of you that have somehow not heard of this, Missingno is a glitch Pokémon that appears after a very certain set of actions are performed. Though it is a bit risky for one's save to catch it, it's nice to know that this popular piece of Pokémon history wasn't edited out for the newer release of the games.
What do you think? Will you try catching Missingno? Do you think the Mew glitch is still in? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

can't wait for missingno's appearance in pokken as a hidden boss.
Nintendo didn't change anything in the game, it's the same ROM. The cable link function is just a wrapper function which gets called when the game looks for the physical cable.
That's great news!
Can't wait to catch my level 255 Rapidash! In the ocean!
Yes! If this is in, I doubt they'd have touched the mew glitch either. I might grab a copy of Blue this weekend.
Ugh. I'm quite disappointed that they've left this in. Seems incredibly lazy to leave in a potentially game-breaking bug that was never intended to be in the game in the first place. Seems even more inexcusable than ever for Game Freak to charge as much as they are for this. Won't stop me from buying it, so I suppose I'm part of the problem, but I'm really disappointed with Game Freak's treatment of this rerelease. Fortunately it won't be possible for them to screw up a VC release of G/S/C (or will it?).
As someone who grew up during the pokemon craze, the glitches were never something that I viewed as a negative. In fact, I don't think I ever got around to beating the game back then without using the rare candy glitch.
@Olmectron They made a lot of changes, have a look: http://pastebin.com/16hAwyUv
The main thing you should know is that the standard VC release usually contains a few patches, these pokemon games however contain an unusual amount of patches. The most notable are network patches, and a variety of pokemon moves are now motion blurred to reduce flashing.
Various patches are not even identified so there's no telling what else they changed.
I wasn't aware of any glitches! I beat yellow fair n square 😄
@sillygostly Why would they change this? Also gamebreaking?! Lol nixe try, you have to go out of your way to activate this anyway.
If I did buy this I'd definitely use this to duplicate TMs given their scarcity and the lack of breeding.
Hopefully the Mew trick is still in, as that seems to be the only way for people outside Japan to be able to obtain Mew.
Hey, has Nintendo, The Pokémon Company or Game Freak ever publicly discussed Missingno?
@sillygostly You're the only person I've ever seen actually complain about Missingno.
@MitchVogel Appropiate news for you to post, since vogel is the Dutch word for bird
I want to catch it again I loved this back then.
@TheDavyStar There's this: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/gameboy/trouble_specificgame.jsp#missingno
Where did people got the games before today?
Someone had even the time to encapsulate Crystal into the "updated" VC emulator to test the Link functions.
Brilliant. NintenD'OH and Game Freak-up does it again.
There's only one way for them to make up for this:
On all teh virtual consolez.
@Rei Where did you see this I can't seem to find it with Google. Did trading work?
I'm really glad that they left this intact, it's just not the same when such an important part of our childhoods would get patched out.
@Olmectron
I'd actually heard that the Jynx sprite was modified.
@Jamotello Do you think that the Mew glitch will make its appearance at the virtual console (that is - Pokemon R,B,Y)?
Lol, there are actually people complaining about this? It's pretty much impossible to come across this glitch without actively trying to and yet you would opt for it to be removed? While there are plenty of others who love that it's still there and it doesn't hurt anybody who doesn't. Some people.. x_x
Brilliant can't wait to download Blue in the morning!
@crimsontadpoles I caught a Mew using the mew glitch on nugget bridge in the European Yellow VC title. Interestingly the Yellow 2DS came with stickers of the starters and evolutions, Eevee, Pikachu, Jigglypuff, Psyduck and Abra and Slowpoke. The latter two feature in the glitch. I'm not going to bother making a bad quality video, but I'm a mod on Smogon if that helps you trust what I say more.
I'm glad they didn't remove it. It's Pokémon history!
@Lutra Thanks, that's very good to know
I don't see why these glitches wouldn't still be here. Nintendo only ever fixes bugs and glitches that could crash the system in their Virtual Console releases. If they had fixed this and the Mew glitch, they might as well have just fixed the other ones like the Focus Energy bug or the Hyper Beam bug.
Anyway, if someone really doesn't like it, they can always get Yellow Version where the Missingno glitch has always been fixed.
If there was one thing fun in these games it were the glitches. Glad they are still in tact.
My life is completed.
I see Infinite Master Balls on the horizon... I may catch an Abra yet!
@allav866 you can sleep powder it with Butterfree to make it easier to catch.
i can't wait, will be fun to visit the kanto region again ^^
@WillTheLion It was an experience of Asia81, a french roaming over gbatemp. I think he wrote it worked. But I remember he was searching for testers.
@King_Y Before next incursion, maybe in the next game or next generation...
@Lutra Nostalgia... ^^

I loved my own Ghost MissingNo. so much when I was a kid. I was so worried they'd take it out and I wouldn't get to see her again. Now I know I can play with her again.
I'm glad it's still in there, wouldn't be the same game without it.
@sillygostly No one is forcing you to use it so why does it matter? It is not like "Sum Ting Wong" over in Asia is going to affect you in any way.
@mjc0961
You don't really need to go out of your way, you do and you don't, the missingno, yes because you need to talk to the oldman however that little line you go up and down will show pokemon from the last area you were so it makes the safari zone so much easier
...I really want to know how this dude has the game already.... O_O
Ah, Missingno....I never caught the thing since I didn't want it hosing up my PC, but I did use it for the replication glitch! So many rare candies.... =3
@Jamotello
That would be an awesome little treat for longtime fans!

Does the infinite item and name glitch still work?
@Snader Ah, u ook hier? Don't see you here very often...
What I want to know is if you catch it and upload to the Pokemon Bank what does it look like? Can it be transferred or will it default to some other Pokemon or simply not let you do anything with it?
So, if you can still catch missingno, and these games interact with Bank...
@Babybahamut my thoughts. also, mew glitch? lol
@Babybahamut Thats actually another question. These games use different EV mechanics compared to gens 3-6, so how will sun/moon and heck, bank, reconcile the mechanics?
So does this mean Missingno can be transferred to Sun and Moon?
Trading from RBY VC to PSM is possible.
@sillygostly It's great really. If you don't want a broken game go grab the physical FireRed / LeafGreen.
@EmmatheBest The special edition 2DS's come with it pre loaded, and some people have already gotten theirs.
I'm curious if it'll be possible to upload this to the bank, but I don't think it'll let you. Still something worth checking out!
I remember a rare candy bug.
I found Missingno completely by accident back in the day!
The one I caught was actually called "Missingo" with some weird symbol next to the name. He was level 117, had Pound, Water Gun, Purple-text Water Gun, and some other move.
Man, those were the days.
@AlienX Interesting, I guess that seals it. Was wondering about interviews or comments from devs or big Nintendo staffers who were like "Oh yeah, Missingno..."
@WillTheLion Hope you will get the URL before it is erased:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/gb-c-injection-with-the-new-generation-of-vc.416318/
(no illegal files in this thread, but you never know)
"Everyone's favorite bird type"
...Wait a minute, this gives me an idea.
You're not allowed to upload the gen 1 pokémon to X/Y/ORAS according to the pokémon website, what if Missingno IS allowed on Pokémon bank, and become a full-fledged pokémon in Sun/Moon?
Wishful thinking I know, but it would be cool.
If you can catch Missingno in Red/Blue/Yellow, and Pokemon Bank is a feature, can't someone put Missingno in the Pokemon Bank and use it in X/Y?
@Rei Thanks! I read through it all and it seems like it's still very work in progress. Either way it'd be cool if they could get it functional. But even if they could it wouldn't be as good as an official re-release of those games because of the scarcity of players playing hacked in copies of the game. Plus there definitely would be no Pokemon Bank support even if they got it working.
@WillTheLion But: you might then send your Gen.2 arranged monsters to Gen.1, from wich they could be transfered to Gen.7 ^^ (or is it still Gen.6?)
What catched my attention: the possibility to inject other games outside the Pkmn franchise inside this new GB VC in order to get GameLink support. @_@
