Nintendo has announced that the Switch outsold its rivals to be the best-selling console of November 2020 in the US. The achievement means that the system has now held that best-selling console honour for 24 months in a row.
Figures provided by the NPD Group show that combined sales of the Switch and Switch Lite systems hit over 1.35 million throughout November, with Thanksgiving and Black Friday no doubt giving the console a decent boost. The Switch has now sold 6.92 million units in the US so far this year, a total which has already bettered the entirety of 2019.
The result also means that the Switch has managed to outsell both the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles in their first month on sale. It's worth noting, however, that retailers all over the country very quickly sold out of stock for the new systems, so it may have been a different story if more units had been available.
Nick Chavez, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, explains that the company 'continues to see unprecedented demand' for the Switch:
"Nintendo Switch offers a unique proposition for shoppers this holiday season with the ability to play on the TV or portably in handheld mode. We continue to see unprecedented demand for Nintendo Switch, and we are pleased that people of all ages and gaming skill levels will be experiencing Nintendo Switch this holiday and beyond."

Give it time. I don’t know about Microsoft, but Sony utilized the exact same scarcity tactic at launch that Nintendo did. The demand is going to reach such a peak that the $500 price point will look normal.
Plus, of course, the Switch is potentially half the cost of a PS5, which will also help drive sales.
Pretty impressive. They were apparently not easy to find on Black Friday...
I know people love the Switch, but I'm honestly still not quite sure why it's selling this well.
@impurekind because of 1) excellent exclusives 2) play most games anywhere you want with much convenience (just not the high demanding AAA games).
And all that for a relatively low price compared to the powerhouses.
This is the first time I've had zero interest in the launch of a MS or Sony console. I don't know. My Switch is doing just fine for me. I'm sure I'll get a PS5 or Series X in a year or so, but I'm just not feeling excited about either of them right now.
@impurekind Because it's a cool concept, has hundreds of quality games, it has many popular Nintendo games, it's a Nintendo Console that doesn't suck, it can play full PS4 games sometimes, it's like $300 for the standard, $200 for the lite, and doesn't take up too much space.
and it has Ori
@impurekind the name, the library (Switch plus WiiU) and portability.... if you haven’t played video games in a while, this is the perfect console. Not to mention that it is $200 cheaper than the other two
PlayStation and Xbox just doing what Ninten-don’t?
@rallydefault in the same boat. I did get the Series X, but mainly to shift my Xbox One S and X into other rooms as media devices. Outside of what I was trying to accomplish, I would’ve waited if it was just me since I bought One X last year for $150 (after trade and discounts).
I say again, you can buy, at full retail price, just a PS5 or XboxX console, or a Switch, 2 games and a pro controller. All at full price.
PS5 and XboxX did not lauch with killer console defining games that set the internet abaze. They "only" have some good games and their back libraries. That's a hard sell to the broader audience.
Yes, hard-core fans want the latest and greatest tech, but for the average consumer it's a big ask.
PS5 and XboxX will get their killer apps and more and more titles only they can run. But for now it's not there yet.
And the biggest point is this:
Software sells hardware. People buy consoles to play games. Not the other way around. It's about fun, not buzz words and technobabble.
@TG16_IS_BAE But if the Switch Pro comes along, then the numbers will shoot up again, of course. =D
This is really weird. So you're telling me that the console that had stock in shops sold better than the ones that didn't?
I have YET to see a regular Nintendo Switch in stores or available online for the past 2 months. So I can only imagine how many switches they would sell if you could actually find them. I ended up finding a switch light at Kohl's in the only color my client didn't like. Sigh.... It's honestly hard to believe how scarce they are again this year.
@Heavyarms55 I want a Ps5 for Miles Morales. I have a PS4 but I've seen it running on ps5 and it looks amazing. Apparently others feel the same given how well the game sold given the ps5 has a relatively tiny install base. I agree, software sells consoles and that's what happened here.
@Severian Assuming they do it right, yes. I doubt it’s coming though, it wouldn’t make sense for them to make one, because clearly all the millions of people that bought the current one are sending the message to Nintendo that they are happy with what is out right now.
@JohnnyC While that's a valid point, one must also consider the how unlikely it is that people said "Well, I can't find a PS5, guess I will buy a Switch".
We are talking about several hundred dollar items. For most people, that's not a casual purchase and they won't just drop 300+ dollars on something they didn't want.
And please, for the love of God, call the next iteration Switch 2, SwitchX or Switch Ultra - just not SwitchU or USwitch.
@rallydefault I'm the same way. Got way too much to play on Switch and PS4 to be concerned with next gen consoles. In fact I'm getting to a point where I'm seeing my older hardware, which used to be current, ageing and I wonder if I'll still be able to play some of my current favorite games years down the line. Consoles kind of become less attractive to me in that light. Thinking maybe I'll build a PC instead at some point since the backwards compatibility is way more robust and you can keep upgrading them for a while.
Great sales figures, its probably helped that a lot of people have bought multiple switches per household (we have 3) and it also attracts the casual market that just plays 1 or 2 Nintendo games.
@Heavyarms55 Agreed. But if there's been more stock, I reckon at least one of the new consoles would have sold a lot better than they did. Always the way at launches though. I never buy at launch. You're paying a premium to buy an unpatched console with one game. Better waiting 6-12 months, buy a bundle from a shop with a wider choice of games, a lot of the day-1 bugs have been identified by the people who paid a fortune to be beta testers, and in the meanwhile it's not like any of us haven't got great games to be finishing on our current systems.
Why are people looking over the fact that since the PS5 and XBS just launched, they don't really have must-have games for the holidays? The Switch has an almost 4 year headstart in its game library it literally has something for everyone. Spiderman is just glorified DLC and Demon Souls is just a retread of a 10 year old game. That would be like if a Switch 2 launched with Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition and Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna The Golden Country. Microsoft only had Halo, then it got delayed so the XBS is mostly useless this year. Their good games will be here at some point, just not this holiday season. They could've alleviated much of that by launching next year, with better stock and better games, they just wanted to try to beat each other to launch. 🤷🏾♂️
The Switch is a beast, and will continue to sell big numbers.
@TG16_IS_BAE Nintendo will always prepare for the next generation or iteration like any console manufacturer does. Whether they release a dozen versions with upgrades of the Game Boy or DS and 3DS or an entirely new set of hardware will be something to consider.
3DS and all its variations from original to 2DS and the XL? Technically the same system and sales figures, which a Switch Pro would do too.
Like the PS4 and PS4 Pro are still essentially the same line with the sum total sales figures together, the numbers will come together.
My favorite quote from Mark Twain: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics."
@impurekind since switch launch, I’ve played exactly 4 games on my ps4, and now have sold it to get a quest 2. I played switch daily on my lunch, as well as at home.
Pretty graphics aren’t worth $500 to me. But being able to play any game I want, whenever, where ever is what I want from a console.
@eaglebob345,
The article mentioned that there was not enough stock of both next generation consoles, to be honest it's nice to see the video game market so healthy.
@Kienda Yep, achieving the highest launch month unit and dollar sales for a game console in the United States
https://www.gematsu.com/2020/12/ps5-achieves-record-launch-month-unit-and-dollar-sales-for-a-game-console-in-the-us
Yeah because they didn't make enough PS5 or Xbox Series X to beat it. Clearly those systems have insane demand right now.
@Severian If you’ve been even remotely paying attention to the conversation, you will have noticed that people want a switch pro to happen this generation, and not in the next one.
Yes, quoting a white supremacist author is making you look really good.
@eaglebob345 XBSX: Forza Horizon 4 in 4k 60FPS, Gears Tactics, Planet Coaster Console Edition, Grounded, Gears 5, all on gamepass alone, but yeah...useless. I mean it's not like people are choosing to not buy the systems because of game selection. They dont' even have the option.
@Donutman The portability lost its novelty on me, so I just mainly game on my laptop. Portable and powerful, without any concessions.
@eaglebob345 Must-have games vary from person to person, that’s simply a matter of perspective.
@TG16_IS_BAE Ah yes the scarcity tactic that was not actually real, and was a just an excuse people who hated Nintendo made up to try and discredit the Switch’s early success. Too bad there isn’t another possible explanation, say a pandemic that has affected production for countless companies?
@Giygas_95 As far as backwards compatibility goes both the PS5 and Series X are better (in the case of PS5 MUCH BETTER). Than the previous generation. I just ordered KOTOR II and Grand Theft Auto VI for xbox 360 and cannot wait to play them upscaled and buttery smooth at 60FPS on the series X. Not saying a PC wouldn't be better for backwards compatibility but at least the console makers are acknowledging the desire for back compat.
Edit: The xbox one was already good at back compatibility. I don't want to make it sound like I think the PS5 is better. Just stating the Sony has put in a lot more effort on the back compatibility front this time around.
@Anri02 Discredit success? No. It was hard to get the thing. Fact.
Nintendo launched the Switch nearly three years before covid hit, not sure how that’s relevant to the scarcity they created at launch.
Sony had the largest launch month in the US market (beating itself, so now #1 and #2)
Ps5 will sell, XSX will sell, Switch will sell. 3080s will sell so will 6800XTs
USA is not like Japan. Multi-platform is the norm here, everyone will sell enough to make it worth it.
Just look at the top selling games. People will buy whatever hardware they need to play the top games out.
For all you new Switch owners out there, buy yourself a Split Pad Pro. Much more enjoyable playing when not docked and your hands will thank you for it.
The first time I'm not interested in a new gen.
My Switch and Xbox one S have me covered until I care, which I can see being a few years yet.
why do they keep bragging about this? Nothing new
And they still didn't announce Nier Replicant for the system! Sales would only make me happy if the numbers attract some good AAA-level support.
@contractcooker Which console seems better from an overall backwards compatibility standpoint? I'm guessing Series X?
@shimarin I know, Sony did great. Probably broke a record profit for Scalpers also. Lol
I was just making a joke comment, but meh, it was a bit lame.
November 2020 US hardware sales:
> Switch: 1.35 million
> PS5: Above 1.1 million, less than 1.35 million
> XBS: Below 900,000
Switch hardware sales last months were actually slightly down YoY (by ~5%), largely due to the lack of a Pokémon-sized holiday release, the lack of any special edition hardware models like last year's Special Edition Sword/Shield Switch Lite model, and supply issues for the standard hybrid Switch.
PS5 and XBS are completely sold out.
@Giygas_95 Build a PC, you will literally miss next to nothing in terms of gaming, the occasional exclusive, really. But who cares? There are so many great games to play other than muh Mario Zelda gaimz
@JohnnyC Oh I am sure if there was more stock both new consoles would have sold better than they did. I just don't think their sales would have had as big an impact on Switch sales as some seem to think.
Switch vs PS5 vs XboxX is a lot different than say, McDonald's vs Burger King vs Wendy's. Lol
@Giygas_95 I would give the nod to Series X. you can play games going back all the way to the original xbox. Not ALL games but most of the big ones and I believe all xbox one games except for those that use Kinect (there aren't many of these). Sony really didn't have any back compatibility on the PS4 but the PS5 can play MOST PS4 games (plus you can purchase popular PS3 games from their online store). Overall the situation is much improved this generation regardless of your platform. It's a pretty great time to be a console gamer.
I snagged the last pair of gray joycons at Target. Don't know how I managed to get that lucky. Store joycons are wiped out.
@TG16_IS_BAE I have a gaming PC, Xbox Series X, PS4 and a switch. While I love gaming on my PC I think it's fair to say that consoles deliver a more reliable experience. Sometimes after a long day at work I just want to chill on the couch with a controller and a beer and not have to worry about drivers, windows updates, etc. I think from a VALUE proposition PC gaming makes the most sense but there are definitely reasons why someone might prefer consoles - ease of use being right up there.
@contractcooker I haven’t had to troubleshoot my gaming PC in years, but people have different skills, so I understand.
Switch sales will fall off a cliff after...

PS5 demand seems to be on-par with where Switch were doing the factory shut-down soon after Animal Crossing release. XBSX seems to have a rather low demand for being a brand new system, poor games and the Xbox One in memory might hold it back. Personally, I find Xbsx to be a very boring kind of system.
It’s a great concept with effective hardware and an absolute ton of great games, many of which can’t be played on anything else. It’s also got effective marketing behind it. Of course it’s selling. PS5 and XBSX are great but even if they weren’t supply constrained they wouldn’t make much of a dent in Switch sales.
To be fair, sure some stock issues, but scalper sales still count.
My problem with PS5, there's nothing I want to play on it. My PS4 plays most of the PS5 library.
At this point I know that many of us would jump on a Switch Pro.
If they do this, the Switch will become the best selling console of all-time.
@TG16_IS_BAE That's cool that you haven't had any trouble in years but you will admit that an open platform like the PC is inherently more likely to have issues than a closed system like a console. There are simply more moving parts on a PC. The added complexity means it's more likely that something will go wrong on a PC. For example - I play GTA IV on a PC. The cutscenes were stuttering and I spent a good 30 minutes looking on forums how to fix the problem. This led down a rabbit hole of how to get the game running it's best on my PC. I enjoy this type of stuff so it's not that big a deal but a lot of less technically minded folk would probably just abandon the game. On the xbox series x I can play GTA IV locked at 60FPS, upscaled to 4K without having to do ANYTHING. All I'm saying is that it's nice to know exactly what you're getting each time you load up a game. For the most part consoles deliver this type of consistency.
EDIT: I will say this cuts both ways. If you're not happy with the performance of a console there's not much you can do where on the PC you can adjust the graphics settings or even pop in a new GPU and you're good to go for another generation. I'm not trying to preach consoles over PC (or vice-versa). I just think that it's a nuanced decision and that you can't really make blanket statements about what is "best" for everyone. It depends on your priorities.
@contractcooker I already said I understand, no need to tear into me because you have problems working a PC.
@TG16_IS_BAE I'm sorry if it came off that I was "tearing into you". I have no problems working on my PC, I enjoy it.
@Heavyarms55 Agreed. The switch is either the sole console for some or secondary for others. Either way Nintendo aren't too scared by Sony or Microsoft. For now. It's like the Wii days are back, but with more quality games.
@contractcooker Oh ok, sorry it’s hard to get the gist across text sometimes. I too, enjoy that rabbit hole from time to time. Peace.
Only because there was inventory to buy.
@TG16_IS_BAE All popular consoles will be hard to find at launch for the foreseeable future. Limited units at launch + high demand + scalpers and bots snapping up supplies as quickly as possible is a recipe for scarcity. No conspiracy theories needed.
@westman98 I love watching this list continue to grow each time it's posted lol
@TG16_IS_BAE Give it time. I don’t know about Microsoft, but Sony utilized the exact same scarcity tactic at launch that Nintendo did. The demand is going to reach such a peak that the $500 price point will look normal.
Where are the rosy glasses that fact check the Switch inventory problems? $500 isn't going to look normal by any stretch of the imagination here.
@TG16_IS_BAE Plus, of course, the Switch is potentially half the cost of a PS5, which will also help drive sales.
And 110% more fun for Everyone not just testosterones actions. That's something you also missed big time here trying down play those numbers and why they are successful at what they do.
@TG16_IS_BAE I mostly started wanting to build a PC after seeing PC gameplay of Doom Eternal and realizing how much of a hindrance dual stick gameplay can be in a shooter mostly designed for a mouse and keyboard. Experiencing gyro aiming on the Switch actually made it even harder for me to enjoy shooters on PS4. There's also the fact that I'm kind of tired of my graphics and frame rates being limited to what the consoles can do. Huge support for older games is also another big plus.
But on the other hand like @contractcooker was saying, I think I'd miss sitting on my couch with a controller and playing on a big TV screen. In the end, I'm probably still going with PC, but it will be an adjustment I have to make I guess.
@impurekind The game experience is what makes it sell. The general audience don't care about 4K, 8K. All they want to do is play fun games. That's it.
@Edu23XWiiU
Yep same for me. I have a high end gaming pc but its collecting alot of dust. I play mostly on my switch.
@Giygas_95 You could get a small form factor PC (preferably with a handle) and connect it to your TV when you want to have the best graphics but still be on the couch. The xbox controllers work decently on PCs from my experience. Haha, hope I'm not increasing your internal conflict about this. I just love gaming no matter the form!
@Edu23XWiiU It's weird some folk don't get this lol.
@Giygas_95 Yes, going from mouse/KB to sticks feels like playing with socks over your hands while handcuffed to a bed. PC gaming has never been cheaper, and you can make a fairly future proof setup for not a lot of money. PC parts picker is a great website for that stuff, highly recommended.
@SwitchForce Calm down.
@The-Chosen-one I play only on PC, the games that don't come out on Switch, but I keep playing on my Switch more and more hahaha.
@GrailUK Yeah, it's only common sense.
@contractcooker No worries, I love games too. I've just recently started thinking about backwards compatibility and hardware obsolescence because I've spent a lot of time 100%ing some of my favorite games on PS4 and Switch (Doom, Doom Eternal, Wolfenstein 2 for instance) so I can enjoy playing them with everything unlocked. But then I started wondering if it was worth putting the time in on platforms that are gonna be replaced down the line.
With how much more I seem to enjoy games on my Switch vs PS4 though (even the big ones like I mentioned above), I'm hoping Nintendo just keeps iterating on the Switch and doesn't eventually replace it with something that has no backwards compatibility. That may be a pipe dream though.
@TG16_IS_BAE Thanks, I'll give that a look when the time comes for me to start buying parts!
@Giygas_95 I cant see Nintendo adopting backwards compatibility - their business model is 80% selling us the same games over and over again.
They had it on wii from Gamecube but then scrapped it, which is a p**s take considering how much they are now charging for wii-U ports.
The reason the Switch is still doing so well is that most people don't see a need for an improvement in fidelity in the year 2020. Similarly, no one was clamoring for a better video medium during the days of DVD, and no one today is saying that bluray discs aren't good enough. The videogame industry is the only one that throws money away at such an absurd rate.
Well that's good! Let us hope the same statement can be said next year 11-12-21.
@ChaosBadger777 Probably right unfortunately. Though I'd also guess that an architecture change
from an IBM processor to Nvidia's Tegra chip and a media change from discs to cartridges were other reasons for the loss of backwards compatibility.
It really would be great though if Nintendo kept this format going forward and allowed you to just transfer your games to each new version of the Switch. They sort of unified their home and handheld consoles into what I see as the perfect system that just needs to be upgraded with better hardware every few years, so it'll be annoying to me if they just change systems entirely at some point and have no backwards compatibility. Though with these sales numbers I think some form of the Switch is going to be around for a while whether its the current model or an upgrade.
@Giygas_95 I bought most of my wii-U games digitally so charging full price to redownload them is a dirty tactic. They could have at least offered discounts to those of us who actually bothered to support them last gen.
There was no reason why they couldn't link your Nintendo account between generations with a wii-U console update to see what games had been purchased and allowed you to redownload on switch. (Well, we all know the reason £££ - they are worse than EA for ripping off the customer)
This really doesn't surprise me...I love my Switch. This is the first time I've never really been interested in a nex-gen console launch because neither of them have anything I really want to play. The biggest title would probably Final Fantasy 16 but Square has done a bang up job at turning me off from games they put out recently Coughs - Crystal Chronicles
@Heavyarms55 I would argue the Miles Morales is that killer title, but one killer title is rarely enough. The only examples I can think of where this strategy worked was BOTW and Wii Sports.
@impurekind They’re bringing many people back who haven’t had a Nintendo console since the Wii. And Nintendo franchises are at an all-time high in popularity.
@ChaosBadger777
The only reason why Switch wasn't backwards compatible with the Wii U or 3DS is due to a complete change in hardware architecture.
@TG16_IS_BAE which is exactly why I have my switch. Nintendo has awesome exclusives, and plenty of awesome ports/indie/AAA titles that I will never need another console at this rate. I’ll update my aging laptop at some point. I purchased the new quest 2, which is awesome, and there just isn’t anything on next gen/pc that makes me want to invest in anything else. It’s all about the games, and I’ve always been pc/Nintendo, and a little PS sprinkled in for exclusives. Now we kill the battery on our quest everyday and am thinking about getting rid of the Xbox 1 to get a second.
@doctorhino Those are all previously released games, though. If a graphical upgrade is all you want, sure, but that's not much to offer.
@TG16_IS_BAE That's true, but standalone DLC and a prettier 10 year old game aren't great "must-have" games by any stretch really.
@Giygas_95 steam big picture and a long hdmi are your friends. I hook my pc up to the TV a lot.
I'm still very happy with my Switch. Right now I'm playing Hades and Ori 2, and soon Doom Eternal and Immortals Fenyx Rising. Greatness that can be played anytime, anywhere.
@eaglebob345 Entirely subjective, you are welcome to your opinion, which is not fact for the universe.
I've also been happy with the increased level of AAA games on the console. No, not every game comes over, and Madden/COD/GTA still missing on the platform is quite noticeable, but this year alone current gen games like Outer Worlds, Doom Eternal and Immortals Fenyx Rising all made it over, along with last gen hits like Bioshock and Borderlands. That, combined with Nintendo exclusives, indies and retro selections, gives such a great variety that is hard to find.
It took them 11 months to beat 2019 numbers? That’s weird, sales saw such an increase this year, how it took so long?
Sony has a massive following. Their worst selling console still sold 87 million units. They will do fine.
Xbox likely is going to be a distant third. I think they will sell around 35-40 million units, not horrible, but further cementing that Game Pass subscriptions are likely the future for them.
The Switch might end overtaking the Wii as Nintendo's best selling console. I'll be curious if it overtakes the PS4 as well in sales.
@Sszx09 better than satisfy grip?
@Sszx09 loose some functionality also don’t you. Gyro? Rumble?
@rallydefault
I'm with you and I own both a PS4 and an Xbox One S...yet the drive to get one of these new consoles is currently next to nothing. I am not impressed with what they are peddling and the price they are asking for. I can also say that this is also a reflection of how unimpressed both the PS4 and Xbox One S have left on me, that I have no rush to commit more money to them. I do love the PSVR though.
@TG16_IS_BAE LOL 😂 someone got off on the wrong side of the bed this morning with a crummy response like that. Whether they want a Switch Pro now or later is irrelevant, it’s that it will be counted towards that total.
Also, white supremacist author? I think you haven’t read a lot of Mark Twain then....not that it matters because an ad hominem doesn’t change the fact that the point made is worth considering.
I recommend that you go back and get some rest so that your responses are a little more chummy rather than crummy, or else I shall be forced to conclude that like the guy who drops his phone in the toilet after continuously starting arguments on the Internet fails to realize that his priorities are wrong when he also has no toilet paper, you aren’t paying attention to details because your mind is in the wrong place.
Feel better soon, chum. You’re a lot nicer usually.
Based on preliminary numbers, it seems like...
> PS5 launch sales exceeded PS4 launch sales by 10-20% in almost all territories outside of Japan.
> XBS launch sales were slightly less than XBO launch sales in all territories outside of the UK due to lack of supply.
> Switch sales in Nov 2020 dipped 2-10% YoY all territories outside of mainland Asia due to lack of Pokémon and supply.
Dec 2020 will be a very supply-constrained month for PS5/XBS and a huge month for Switch. The only question is whether Switch sales can increase YoY compared to Dec 2019.
@eaglebob345 well for some of us who still had a vanilla xbox moving to 4k and an ssd is a huge deal. Considering you haven't been able to get an Xbox one x for almost a year now on discount and this is only 100 dollars more. Trust me if you were into Xbox a whole lot and still chunking along on a launch edition it would be a massive upgrade. We don't complain that when we upgrade our pcs they still work with the same games.
Nba 2k21 next gen is brilliant looking, yakuza like a dragon and gears tactics came out dual but on or after series x was out so those are all new.
@Severian I’m totally fine, just making sure people can see that Mark Twain isn’t the coolest guy out there.
@TG16_IS_BAE Since you can't get any new GPU, good luck with that building a PC. Nvidia and AMD are all sold out, just as bad if not worse than the PS5/Xbox X situation.
@StevenG I have a PC, and I’m surrounded by stores that have hundreds of PCs and laptops to choose from. That shortage might be specific to your area.
@ChaosBadger777 so the option was simple for you then. Not to buy the switch versions and continue playing them on Wii U. Nintendo never forced you to buy the switch versions. If you felt it was a rip off then show them that and don't buy.
@kobashi100 So many people who keep whining about the number of Wii U games on the Switch. The Wii U only sold 13.5 million units. The Switch has sold over 68 million units. That means to around 53-55 million Switch owners, these are new games. It makes perfect business sense to move them over to the Switch.
@kobashi100 I don't buy Nintendo games new so they don't get any of my money.
@PhilKenSebben Long HDMI does sound like a good option! Or just set it up close to my TV. At some point once I've finished saving for a house down payment and moved into a house, I want to set up a home theater system to watch movies as well. Might use the TV sometimes unless I'm playing something that sort of demands a mouse.
@rallydefault I understand how you feel. Personally, I don't see them as much of a step up over my PS4 or Xbox One S outside of slightly better-looking graphics.
But there's no insane difference like there was during previous generation jumps.
These new consoles just don't seem to bring anything new to the table....
@impurekind i dont get it either, the hardware is so faulty, and the software is available elsewhere for a cheaper price. I guess its portable
@kingbk, its the price point, and since they're not doing anything to these games, their profit margins are super high, so financially it makes sense, but for the informed consumer its sheisty and uncreative. Moreover the quality and quantity of new games is not where it needs to be, and that is why people blame the switch ports, whether there is a direct correlation or not. Also, the Wii u and Wii were backwards compatible, as were all the portables, so the notion that these ports are exciting is dumb to an informed consumer, and apparently there are about 14 million(not that they are all informed) consumers who have eyes on Nintendo's greedy practice. Now include all the 3rd party ports that are either old, inferior, or late to the party that are also overpriced.
My gut feeling is a new generation has never felt more like a continuation of the last generation as much as this one. Maybe it's because of the X and Pro. Dunno.
It's clear outside of Japan, no one is flopping. But the Switch seems to have found a strong baseline and next gen isn't rocking it's boat. If they can't gather momentum (and I appreciate there are many external factors and still they are selling what they make so there is no need for any alarm lol) a new Switch could steal some thunder at some point next year.
No idea what a new Switch means. 1) It enhances the current Switch play (sleeker model type thing.) 2) It features a more contemporary chip set and NVidia throw their weight behind it (I know I would if I were them lol) or 3) It's a moderate upgrade that incorporates a new 'gimmick' for gameplay (AR or something - which we all know is more Nintendo thinking.) But to be frank, the concept has so much potential that most roads are made of win.
Everyone is going to be fine. Merry Christmas.
@sandman89
Yup a downside for sure. Having to to stock controllers for certain games not ideal. But for me it’s a minor issue since it really only popped up during certain Botw shrines NSMBu recently. For everything else I really prefer the comfort of the split pro over standard controllers (I play 90% in handheld mode)
@kobashi100 yet sadly, this uncreative practice has proved lucrative and therefore my little boat is swamped by the wake of the much bigger boat of those who are less frugal. As a result, I am not getting a Mario kart 9 because MK8 deluxe has not reached its market saturation point, and call me crazy but I think the reality of that game made Nintendo realize that even their sequels could be more of a 1.5 affair (Splatoon 2, and even Smash Ultimate [which released as a compilation game]).
@westman98 Another thing I've noticed has died down a bit is the old "Why isn't Nintendo releasing anything? Don't give Covid as an excuse, Sony and Microsoft are releasing new consoles no problem!!!?!?!??!!" Followed shortly by "well you have to understand, the reason the PS5 and Xbox aren't doing that great sales wise and the games are delayed is restricted supply problems caused by Covid...." Flippity flop, flippity flop. Goalposts. Moved.
@TG16_IS_BAE i think you haven’t read any Mark Twain then or done any fact checking 🤣
@Severian Google isn't fact check, please try again.
@TG16_IS_BAE Studying him in university and having his work in my library negates the need for me to do so.
Also, it’s DuckDuckGo, never Google. Read a book before you reinforce his other wonderful statement: “Better to remain silent and have people think you are a fool than to open your mouth and confirm their suspicions.” 😜
@Severian I studied him in uni, too. I also know that showing up to university classes doesn't always guarantee that an intelligent individual will come out of it. Throwing around the quotes of a white supremacist, again, is not making you look good or proving any points. Search engines are not ideal for fact checking, please try again.
@TG16_IS_BAE Your university owes you a refund if you keep pushing this silly idea Twain is a white supremacist just like a little kid insisting that the tooth fairy is real. Provide a source that supports your idea or you’re Ace Ventura talking out of your butt again like on Push Square with artificial scarcity and stolen PS5s from lorries.
I mean, not trying to take away from how well the Switch is doing, but I giggle at the thought of some kid that asked for a PS5 or new Xbox unwrapping a Switch for Christmas because those consoles require you to trade an arm and a leg to get one, lol.
@Severian I didn’t write that comment, you’ll have to talk with the guy who wrote the article, over at push square.
Quit trying to defend a white supremacist, it's not a good idea.
@JohnnyC That Miles morales is surprisingly a very nice looking game, especially now that they've released and update that gives you the 60 fps AND the Ray tracing. I tried running with the Ray tracing and while it looked nice, not having the frames made me drop it out of my playthroughs. If all games can find a way to balance that going forward everybody wins.
@TG16_IS_BAE Next thing we hear from you besides another straw man argument putting words in my mouth, factual error stating things that aren’t true to refute what is, ad hominem attacks insulting someone instead of the point made, and ad infinitum broken record repeats of the same dead argument will probably be when you insist that the earth is flat and that Australia doesn’t exist because they’re just Hollywood actors who made a fake accent (fun fact: flat earthers really believe this).
@jbreez00 Like many people, I was a fan of the first game so looking forward to a new story in the same universe. Especially with a bit of spit and polish. Trying to be good and hold off on the temptation to just buy the PS4 version so I can get it for the ps5.
@Severian Bitter, party of one, your table is ready.
@TG16_IS_BAE
Why would someone who was considered a very liberal progressive in his day be a white supremacist?
@Toy_Link Are you serious? Being a liberal back then is 100% different than what it means to be a liberal in 2020.
@impurekind I think the games they dropped in the first 2 yrs has something to do with it.
@TG16_IS_BAE
Do you think the majority of the American Conservatives today would agree that the peasants in the French Revolution did nothing wrong when they rose up against the rich or believe that Christian missionaries are just the first stage to bring imperialism to foreign countries?
@TG16_IS_BAE @Edu23XWiiU speaking of liberals. That's one thing I'll never be. In fact leftists upset me. Not sure how or why you two are talking about this but I saw the post and just felt like replying. Anyway, have a Merry Christmas!
@faint Miles Morales does nothing the original PS4 Spiderman didn’t. It really does just feel like expanded (and super-overpriced) DLC to that game.
@Joe-b Yeah, I’m not a huge fan of identity politics, either. It just came up in the conversation. Personally I think that all sides have useful input, so forcing myself to attribute myself to a single side feels self limiting. Maybe, in time, a political party that is more concerned with finding middle ground will gain popularity in this immensely polarized political system we trudge along in.
@Toy_Link They probably don’t know, are you assuming that every conservative in America is well-versed in history? It might be worth noting that the French Revolution, which came about from unfairly taxing peasants, doesn’t seem to fit the context of what we are talking about, very much. Why do you bring it up, and further, what honestly makes you think that specific part of history is on the tip of everyone’s tongue, that is a conservative? The Christian thing is a bit of a tough subject. My wife’s old church is being sued by 400+ people for decades of harassment, of a perverse kind. I don’t agree with any Christian value, so I’m kind of useless on that question, sorry.
@kingbk @Joe-b Don’t forget Dark Souls remastered. It looks fantastic on Switch’s smaller screen, and runs solid. It has been an invaluable portable experience this week as I recover in bed from illness (I started 4 more characters in that time).
...What is taking them so long to bring DS2 over?
I really want to get Doom Eternal on Switch but I still haven’t finished it on PC yet
I'm just logging in to observe all the excuse making & bitterness bound to come in from this news. Not to mention being able to get my RDA sodium intake as well from the haters, outside zealots & usual suspects. With that sad let me grab my 🍿and let's go. Just have to worry about getting the right amount of butter as I'm sure that salt will be provided soon enough.
@TG16_IS_BAE Thanks for sharing your dinner plans. You got served. 😁
@Severian Go fix your lack of knowledge, it’s pitiful.
@Antraxx777 The most pertinent question on the entire website, my friend. Where IS Dark Souls 2, I’m very anxious for that on the Switch!
@Antraxx777 this doesn’t stop it from being a must have title.
@TG16_IS_BAE For someone who loves to argue, you sure are terrible at it. 😁 but your own self-professed knowledge is about as useful as a homeless guy telling others he can make them millionaires: wishful thinking from someone whose own actions speak volumes.
My original statement about Switch sales was never something you were interested in talking about because you can’t argue your way out of a paper bag or even go to your silly insistence about Mark Twain.
Hope your holidays are pleasant! 😁
@Severian I find your lack of meaningful conversation disturbing.
@TG16_IS_BAE I find your inability to follow through with everything you start and the resulting holes you dig yourself into wildly entertaining. 😁
Happy to be your friend. 🤠
@Severian If you really wanted to do that, then why wouldn't you do that? Instead you do this. It makes no sense.
@Antraxx777
Big time facts. Played it last weekend while watching my nephew. They really could have made that an add-on for the original game & not one eye would be batted. The funniest thing is when I've seen many of the same people defending that overpriced DLC like a beloved family member in the past have tried to crap on Mario for "more of the same". When ironically (outside of the U type series) they're usually pretty unique to each other.
Even comparing the first 2 Super Mario Bros games will give you more variety than what I've seen so far playing mm. Not saying that it can't be fun (and I admittedly wasn't blown away like some of the super enthused & media told me to be by the 1st one) but anything more than 25-30 dollars for that expansion piece is absurd to me. Wasn't my money this time though, so I don't care.
@TG16_IS_BAE Friends have all sorts of roles and impacts. In this case, you’re the kinda friend who comes to the lunch table saying silly things who amuses the rest of us as we either roll our eyes or play along because we see you’re able to offer more than just bad arguments (that you don’t support or finish) or being a poor sport when you realize you put your foot in your mouth (again) .
Merry Christmas, dude!
@TG16_IS_BAE
You don't see what the poor lower class rising up against a privileged richer class has anything to do with A. Racism and B. Modern American party lines vs. that of Twain's time?
Reason I bring those specific examples up, because both were very controversial statements Twain made in his day
Especially in his later part of his life, Twain was all for the underdog, those oppressed by the rich and powerful (sound familiar?) He often got labeled as a socialist, because of his firm belief in equality.
Other than some dated passages from books over a century old, what makes you think Twain wouldn't be considered a liberal today?
@Toy_Link Ah, yeah the French Revolution thing is a very broad topic, so I can see where you are coming from now. I don't try to talk about things I don't know, so I can't guess specifically anything about Twain, a dead man I've never met. I'm talking about how historically, trends seen in conservatives vs liberals have shifted over the centuries, more of a general shift of values than anything else. It's interesting to see that a liberal during say, Kennedy's time shares a lot with conservative thinking in 2020, and vice versa. And I'm talking about rational people, not extremists.
Having stock available gets you sales, who would've thought?
@Severian The old apple revels in its authority.
@westman98 Moral of the story is that haters like to move the goal post.
@dronesplitter
Lol I giggle even more at the fact that some folks out there looking for a way to cope with or downplay this bit of news or actually convincing themselves that's something that would routinely and widespread be happening. I just shake my head and laugh at these folks. They would rather come up with such utterly asinine conspiracies rather than just accept and/or congratulate such info and take it as it is. Crazy...
@TG16_IS_BAE Yeah, I get that yer crabapples now. You’ll get over it by the next article you comment on whether here or Push Square.
‘Tis the season to be jolly, so lighten up, chum!
@impurekind
Dope games, Fun, the ability to play said dope & fun ganes anywhere, and the exclusives thing that they've BEEN doing since they stepped in the industry. Ironically something that what is downplayed for several console generations and didn't become such a buzzword or end all be all for many until others started getting some work mentioning. So there's some reasons among other things I'm sure.
@rallydefault
Yeah, same here. I didn't even really keep up with the things that much for real. Series X maybe a little bit more than ps5, but none were really that big a blip on my radar in particular. I'll eventually get there I suppose (had a Series X pre-ordered there for a while) oh, but I'm content with the Switch and the other systems maintaining their longevity
Switch is the only system that has decent stock so of course it would sell the best (very difficult to get either next gen system). I'd guess PS5 would overtake Switch around April unless a new Switch revision launches by then which original Switch owners would want to upgrade to.
@TG16_IS_BAE Twain was a white supremacist? I've read plenty of stupid things on the internet, but this is the dumbest. How did you manage to not read Huckleberry Finn or just about anything else written by Twain?
@WiltonRoots Consoles are made in factories where people need to work closely together.
Games can be made remotely from the safety of people's homes.
This shouldn't be too hard to understand.
This
@impurekind I'm in the same boat. The Switch would be my biggest console regret if I hadn't bought a Vita. Really don't understand the appeal of the Switch. Bland first party releases and little of interest from third parties. The halcyon days of the DS and 3DS are far behind us.
@Antraxx777 hopefully you feel better. You want to see an amazing feat on the Switch? Check out Dragon Quest XI S. That game is amazing.
@ChaosBadger777
Well to be fair, every successful console out there grabs the bulk of the casuals bud. It's been that way forever in the gaming industry. I hope that you don't think that the Atari, ps2 or any other successful system got there without them. Outside of something faulty going on like the faulty lasers, discrete Dara and such of the aforementioned ps2, they can only dream to have moved as many units & become as popular as they did without them. All three of those guys want as many casuals as they can get, trust and believe that.
@doctorhino
Exactly, like what you like, but to try and say that is any more useless this year than the ps5 is nonsense.
@kingbk
Don't worry, as some of these same folks will conveniently have no problem with the games on ps's & cbox's. Just look at the way that they had no problem with tlou remastered coming out so quickly on the ps4 or enjoying the Master Chief collection on Xbox. Not to mention some currently slob knobbing miles morales for lunch when you can play that on the last box. And none of them even did as poorly as the Wii U to have the excuse to try and recoup so quickly.
@gameboy1975 what are you talking about? I was responding to a statement that said they both were useless with facts about the one I own. I didnt even mention ps5. This new console war is really turning people to take sides and assume everyone else is.
@TG16_IS_BAE
Yeah, that only sounds good if you're keeping that same energy when it comes to others. If not, then you're just hella disingenuous and feces full. As that same exact logic can be applied to sony & MS as well. So if we look, are we going to find you with that same logic & energy on say a push-square or when it comes to Xbox? Or, are we going to find a maybe not so lowkey hypocrite & potential hater spitting that that rhetoric when it comes to Nintendo but quiet as kept when it comes to sony or MS. Not a betting man, but if I was I think I would have to go with the latter.
@doctorhino
There may have been something lost in translation or admittedly even misread on my behalf potentially. I am browsing the site while working afterall. As I thought that when you were reading off games like Gears, Forza and stuff available on Xbox that you were responding to someone's claim that Xbox is useless. No more, no less. And if that was it. So I thought that I was agreeing with you that given the quality games available on the system & made available through Game Pass that was a great reason on its own.
So if it was misinterpreted or misread, cool I can say my bad. No harm ever intended. All that other ASSuming & getting puffy about console wars though, you can keep for yourself or maybe someone else that actually needs to hear that lil' spiel. Truat & believe that I have 0 need to participate in those imagined wars of yours given that I tend to end up with all the systems anyway. Please simmer down a bit there homeboy; because it truly wasnt THAT serious.
@gameboy1975 You're a tower of taste.
@Ambassador_Kong Got it, consoles are made at home, games can be made in factories. I understand, now.
@Severian Never underestimate the willingness of the greedy to throw you under the bus.
@TG16_IS_BAE It was hard to get the thing does not equal artificial scarcity. The second half of your comment is you thinking I'm talking about the Switch, when I'm clearly talking about the PS5
@gameboy1975 "but to try and say that is any more useless this year than the ps5 is nonsense."
So he said both were useless and I read this as to say I was sticking up for series x and agreeing ps5 is useless.
so I read the comment as I was trying to say the gamepass stuff made it useful and ps5 still useless. In any case no problem haha. I own all the systems from the past 3 generations so better believe I'll still be getting a ps5 some day. I just don't take sides anymore.
Right now they are both great consoles and impossible to find so I was just happy to find the one I wanted to start with.
@doctorhino
it's all good man, like I said it could have been misinterpreted/misread. As again, I was working and just passing the time going through the posts here. In any case, I agree with your sentiment about just not feeling the need to take sides.
@Anri02 I thought you were talking about the 3DS.
@TG16_IS_BAE Right back at you. If prettier old games and DLC are what get you going, more power to you. That's not to say that the upcoming games don't look intriguing, they are just not here yet.
@doctorhino To each their own, as always. Just graphical upgrades on existing games doesn't do it for me, but it's great for those who want it. Again, that's not to say that what's coming won't be phenomenal. I think the consoles will be well worth it once the new games start to stack up. Weirdly enough, I want a PS5, but the only game that has caught my interest so far is the new Hellblade. 😭
@TG16_IS_BAE So then learn to be a little more magnanimous instead, chap!
@Ambassador_Kong He probably is trying to be original but can’t get around the already tired old trope of deconstruction that works only if you remove any question marks from conjecture and state things with absolute authority. It eliminates all discussion and becomes a means of forcing a silly idea with no proof while grasping for straws to force it.
I think he is confusing Mark Twain for someone else or he is just repeating the nonsense he heard from some untenured teacher trying to remain relevant with absurd arguments for their failed thesis who is using their students as guinea pigs to see if they will believe such nonsense in hopes that the department will buy it too.
@Giygas_95 sounds good! Good luck on the house hunting, when you're ready of course.
@TG16_IS_BAE The $400-$500 is normal. And reasonable. Also, Nintendo provided countless more Switches at launch. Sony literally didn't put units in stores on launch day so anyone who didn't secure a pre-order didn't get one. Hundreds of thousands, upwards of a million, people were able to saunter into stores on launch day and grab a Switch with no fuss in stores across the world. Doesn't mean they didn't have shortages sporadically, but it definitely wasn't the same as the situation right now with the PS5. And maybe that's largely due to the pandemic, but getting a Switch at launch wasn't very hard.
@Severian You should learn to be more magmanamous.
@eaglebob345 : )
@TG16_IS_BAE Only after you learn how to spell it properly.
@Severian You don’t know what magma is? You need to be more lava-like.
@eaglebob345 people spend thousands all the time to upgrade their pc for the same effect. Games that had insane loading times or ran with frame drops suddenly play great. Not sure how this is any different... consoles aren't going to always mean a new engine or it's last gen.
@TG16_IS_BAE Ah, you were attempting to be funny! How cute!
See? You can lighten up instead of getting all crummy like you were at the beginning here. Don't worry, homeboy, we lava you still!
@doctorhino I agree that's exactly what this situation is like. When consoles have backwards compatibility it's usually considered just an add-on, so enhanced performance wasn't really at the forefront. That said, I would think that that's why we have mid-gen revisions, not a whole new generation. I just think it's funny that it's very much in contrast with Sony's message at the start of the PS4 because it didn't have PS3 compatibility. At that point bc wasn't a priority, now it's basically what this launch is hinging on.
@Severian Bro. No.
@Ambassador_Kong The thing is as well these games are built off people working shoulder to shoulder and instant feedback. Constant feedback and idea bouncing, I know first hand from working with multi gigabyte psds doing high end retouching at home productivity takes a massive toll. Things take 6-10 times longer sometimes. It's easy to work from home, but no matter what you do add a couple of extra days due to scheisse broadband. Things I can do in half a day in the office ends up taking much longer in lockdown. I can't imagine it's any different for people working on games that are 20-50GB.
@eaglebob345 well sounds like we are actually thinking the same thing. See I missed xbox one x and they stopped making it so to upgrade my existing games to 4K it was this or nothing. I actually did it a lot for that reason cause I kept seeing 4K hdr on games I bought and I couldn't do that so I felt like I was getting less out of my purchase.
The only xbox series only game I have is next gen nba 2k21 but many of the games like watchdogs legions or yakuza like a dragon wouldnt have been nearly as good on a vanilla xbox so I would have felt like I was getting 2x less and just not bought it.
Not saying you have to relate to the feeling just the main reason I didn't feel ripped off and at the same time it felt more like a continuation than a leap.
Yup, Switch is selling and will continue to sell. Never understood the logic behind Switch sales completely falling apart just because next gen consoles came out. So people will automatically not want MH Rise, BotW2 and other future Switch exclusives?? Makes no sense.
@TG16_IS_BAE Please find me an RTX3080, RTX3060 or RTX3070 or an AMD RX 6800 series. A laptop for gaming, please don't make such silly jokes.
I will be more than happy to pay MSRP for any of those cards, so please let me know when you can ship me one.
I of course don't want to buy outdated hardware after the new stuff ships, that would be ridiculous.
@StevenG I just bought a laptop for gaming, an Alienware. It’s absolutely stunning what it can do. Ever heard of that brand? It’s not a joke lol. Why do I need to find you one of the top end video cards? Those aren’t necessary for quality pc gaming. You can google search if you need a video card, don’t bug me about it. They are literally everywhere. Just because you can’t buy the most expensive one doesn’t mean you can’t get a slightly older model. Heck, my old PC has a video card that I bought in 2012 and it still runs most modern stuff maxed out at 1080p. I was shocked when it played Sekiro without any issues.
Anyway, not sure what you’re getting at.
@TG16_IS_BAE Laptops are not for gaming, good luck with VR or 4k on that silly thing. Alien-ware is just Dell.
What I am getting at is modern cards are all sold out. A 3060 is a midrange card. Buying an old model GPU right now would be braindead.
@StevenG Laptops are not for gaming? Why is it that I can emulate a PS3 on my laptop?
I’m aware that Alienware is produced by “just Dell,” the specs are still ludicrously good, regardless of its parts manufacturer.
And yes, you are quite brain dead, I’ve already gathered that, don’t have to be so obvious about it.
@westman98 ave
@TG16_IS_BAE Oh wow an ancient video game system, amazing.
The specs are not great compared to a gaming desktop.
You are being silly and wasting money to play games in a worse way.
@StevenG Seems to work great for me! Nobody is talking about high end gaming here but you, so have fun on your island!
@TG16_IS_BAE That's the entire point of PC gaming. You might as well go get a playstation.
