Remember Save Me Mr Tako: Tasukete Tako-San? This Game Boy-style adventure was given a glowing 8/10 review by us in 2018 and seemed destined to receive a lovely physical edition at one point. But sitting here right now, in The Year of Our Lord 2020, it's currently impossible to purchase this delightful game.
That's because Christophe Galati, the developer, has parted company with publisher Nicalis, which means the title has been delisted from all digital storefronts. "After being published by Nicalis for two years it was time to go separate ways," Galati told us exclusively. "I can’t discuss this matter more but I’m excited to be able to exploit my game again and do things with my IP."
While Galati has been nothing but professional about the whole matter and, in October, issued a statement in which he spoke in positive terms of his relationship with Nicalis, reading between the lines it's fairly easy to detect a degree of tension between the two. When revelations regarding the business practices of Nicalis surfaced last year, Save me Mr Tako was cited as an example of the publisher's lack of commitment to its partners.
According to Kotaku:
Earlier this month, the developer of a Game Boy-styled platformer called Save Me, Mr. Tako told a similar story, writing on Twitter that he’d submitted a new patch for his game that added an easy mode and fixed some of players’ complaints. “But it’s up to Nicalis to decide when it will come out,” he wrote. “It’s ready, and I guess it will come out on Steam first. Really hope it will be soon because it’s frustrating to see people complaining about issues I fixed a while back.” In response, Rodriguez wrote on Twitter that Tako hadn’t sold well enough to justify implementing the patch. “Unfortunately, the game did not yet make back what we put into it,” he said. “We have a policy of stringent QA testing before pushing releases, and we do not have the space in our budget to QA test the patch so we can push it out.”
It's easy to see, then, why Galati has been so keen to wrestle back control over his game. Unfortunately, because the title was totally delisted from digital stores, it does mean that anyone who has already purchased it will have to pay all over again once it becomes available – although Galati tells us that he is looking into ways of doing a "special sale" or a code giveaway to those who have already paid money for it.
As for when the game will reappear, Galati can't say for sure, but he's hoping that it will be back on Switch and Steam by Spring 2021. And while a lot of other people might have been put off by the experience of working with a publisher, Galati reveals that he'll still be teaming up with a third-party to release the game – on Switch, at least. "From now on I’ll handle PC myself, it includes Steam and maybe other stores that the game wasn’t published on before," he tells us. "For consoles, the game will be handled by another publisher I haven’t revealed yet, but I can’t wait for you to discover what we are planning early next year!"
Indeed, Galati is hard at work on the game as we speak, which should result in an even better experience than the one we played (and enjoyed) back in 2018:
I’m currently playtesting and polishing the patch of the game I’ve been working on since the release in 2018. I watched many streams of the game, read reviews and I agree that many aspects could be improved. I worked especially on rebalancing the game, adding features like new difficulty modes (with hearts), a hint system to avoid players getting lost, quality of life features like an auto palette mode, a better dialog box and more. I hope all those changes will make the game more accessible so more players will be able to enjoy the world and story I put my heart into creating.
The saga of Save me Mr Tako has been a difficult one for Galati personally, but he's keen to take away some important lessons from the whole experience – lessons he intends to apply to Himitsu Project, his next venture:
Save me Mr Tako is the first game I developed as an indie, starting back when I was 19. I learned a lot of things creating it, it opened many doors and introduced me to many aspects of this industry. Those past two years were very frustrating, seeing players complain about issues in the game I wish I could have seen before the release, unfortunately after 4 years of making it mostly on my own I couldn’t feel them anymore, especially the difficulty. It’s a shame I wasn’t allowed to patch the game before, but now that I can I’m doing what it takes to give Tako the second chance it deserves. I’m also applying all the things I learned into my new game, Himitsu Project, that I’ll be able to focus on more once “Save me Mr Tako!” is back in stores.

still really want to play this game. very nostalgic kirby feels
I bought this and it's very cute and charming, but it could definitely use the tweaks he's apparently applied to the PC version.
I really hope people wise up and stop working with Nicalis.
Glad to hear it worked out for him. Nicalis sounds like bad news for indie developers
When I played this game years ago I was certainly enjoying it, but the game really was in need of a patch for the extra polish, for all reasons stated.
I actually did get lost during my playthrough and could not finish the game, because I had no idea where I needed to go in order to actually continue the story.
Nicalis continue to do their small indie developers dirty like they did with Ludosity and Ittle Dew 2+, they held the expansion content to that game hostage for a long time before Ludosity were able to publish that update to other platforms.
Anyway whenever this does get re-released on the Switch I'll be happy to buy it a second time so I enjoy a more polished version. It deserves it, though the game does run on a bit too long.
Ill have to give this game another shot at some point. Love the aesthetic and music, but I got stuck getting to another level and stopped playing.
I made the mistake of deleting the game before finishing it because of aforementioned problems, but I'm regretting it because now I don't know how easy it will be to re-download it later on with the proposal Galati has. Make me hate Nicalis even more, though I also feel maybe I should "buy" the game again to directly support Galati this time.
@RupeeClock I bet we got stuck at the same spot. I think it was level 33 that was unfindable for me.
"Unfortunately, because the title was totally delisted from digital stores, it does mean that anyone who has already purchased it will have to pay all over again once it becomes available"
I had yet to get it anyway, but... I could swear this is NOT how delistings work, "total" or otherwise.😕 Heck, my account still has access to and factually redownloads Astro Bears Party, a game that has been officially removed for ages since its content and modes became part of the more full-fledged Astro Bears (period) package. What's turning out to be so different about how Nicalis-published games are stored on eShop servers?🤔
@Severian if you didn't archive it (which would leave the icon), maybe go check your account's redownload section proper, over on console eShop. Worth a shot. Like I said above, delistings that disable a future purchase are sadly not uncommon, but stripping users of an already paid redownload on a fully functional digital platform server sounds rather atypical.
An octopus has gotta do what an octopus has gotta do.
@nhSnork I did archive it and tried to find it from the the redownload section from the console...took me to the eshop and it said the software was unavailable.
The same thing happened with Ittle Dew 2, right? I have personal experience with both the delisted Nicalis version of ID2 and the new self-published version of ID2, and I have to say the newer self-published version runs sooo much better and smoother and nicer.
I think Nicalis makes it hard for devs to patch their games or something like that.
How do you make an octopus laugh?
Ten tickles 😁
Shame about the game though, have already purchased but when I heard about people getting lost it really put me off so haven't tried it yet.
I was interested in Save Me Mr. Tako after reading about here, but I held off on getting it for several reasons, including wanting to see reviews. I had concerns with some of the design decisions, so I decided to wait. So I'd be more likely to consider purchasing it if it got a patch, which the developer says the game can't get due to not selling well enough. Yeah, that doesn't sound like a good policy. I look forward to seeing a new version and will likely steer clear of Nicalis.
The pixel art of Himitsu Project looks very nice in that shot.
Having to rebuy a game to get a patch is unacceptable.
I really hope I don't have to rebuy this game just to update it! Don't punish early adopters!
This is the same garbage that happened with ittle dew 2 or whatever I bought from nicalis. Can’t get updates on that either. I will NEVER buy another game published by those thieves again. I really hope the mr tako creator can do something for those of us who already bought his game.
@EarthboundBenjy Did you have to buy Ittle Dew twice?
@EarthboundBenjy
Is that a fact? I have the physical version that's published by Nicalis, and the self-published digital version now runs better?
Interesting, I may double-dip just for that reason, plus to support Ludosity.
I hae a love hate relationship with Nicalis startinge with BoI.
Their lack off communication for retail releases outside the US (Im in the UK) eventually made me change my metailty of supporting the local release.....I just end up importing their titles.
But ever since the Lttle dew fiasco blew up I havent imported any title from them (I passed on Ikaruga!!!! Omg!)
Ive never let any behind the scene happening affect my descision to purchase a game. But lttle dew and the whole having to import mad the descision easy for me.
Nicalis is dead to me now (I have all their switch titles up to that crystal game...the super puzzle fighter rip off)
@AG_Awesome I had the Nicalis version physically, while the new Ludosity version is digital-only. But they do count as separate apps on the Switch, so I presume you would have to buy it again. The new version is actually much cheaper than the Nicalis version was anyway.
@RupeeClock The biggest improvement you'll find is that the loading times are vastly improved. Exiting a room to reset a puzzle is much less painful, and exploring the town hub area in Fluffy Fields is much less of a drag. They also fixed the bug where some environmental sound effects would stick and never stop playing.
@EarthboundBenjy
And those bugs will never be fixed on the physical release I have because it's a different SKU.
Damn Nicalis for refusing to process any sort of patches for their published games, that's not cool.
Never knew it got delisted...it's a good game that I had fun with, but it's definitely starts dragging a bit at one point. Would've liked it better had it been a tad shorter.
Wow.... mental note for the future: don’t buy Nicalus published games!
I put 9-10 hours into Tako before just getting confused as all hell where I should go. The fact that the creator MADE the fixes and the publisher won’t implement them until it’s sold X amount is ice cold. That patch could literally salvage my opinion on the game and I could then give it positive word of mouth 😑
Nicalis really do suck. #Free90sArcadeRacer
I’ll happily re-buy the game when it comes out.
-Your game isn't selling for reasons
I wrote some code to fix reasons so people will buy it
-We can't update your game because it didn't sell
Only in the US
So if you already purchased this and archived it, you can still get it. I bought it shortly after it was released and never redownloaded it after I upgraded my micro sd card. Anyway I just found the icon in my library and there’s still an option to download it. So it’s not gone completely. It’s nowhere to be found on the eshop for new purchases though. Hopefully they let you download the new one for free when it’s available like they did with the adventures of Elena temple
@Zach1122 Have you tried it yourself? This wasn’t the case for me. As I also said earlier, I have the icon but it won’t let me Redownload it. So it appears the option is there, yet when you try to redownload, it says the software is unavailable.
@Severian that’s so weird cause it definitely just worked for me the same way it does for any other game I want to redownload...it downloaded and I played a few minutes to make sure. Are you using the America eshop or Europe? I’m in the states so maybe it’s still available here for some reason?
Edit: checked your profile and saw you’re in the Philippines so it’s gotta be the fact that we’re using different eshop regions. Maybe it got removed in your region before mine. That’s the only thing that would make any sense if we’re both doing the same thing and only I can access it...really strange though
@Zach1122 that’s really weird because I use the US eshop too. It won’t download for me from the home screen when clicking on the icon or when going to the original page for the game on the eshop, which is now gone.
