2020 was another amazing year in terms of the indie titles released and the Switch was lucky enough to get most of them.
There were games like Streets of Rage 4, Shantae and the Seven Sirens, Moving Out, Carrion, Spiritfarer, Hades, A Short Hike, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin, Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 and to go out with a bang, Among Us.
Nintendo has now rounded all of these great indie games up into a single graphic and shared it on social media. Here it is:
Last week, Nintendo also shared a list of best-selling indie games on the Switch eShop - featuring many of the games in the above graphic. You can read more about this in our previous post.
How many of these indie hits did you play in 2020? What was your personal favourite? Tell us down below.

Of these I probably put the most hours in Crosscode and Hades.
That is nice. Bold idea though: a graphic of upcoming 2021 releases
I’ve played quite a few of them actually, although none of them on Switch. Hades on the EGS, the rest on Game Pass.
Bought only five. A Short Hike was my favorite! Also a fan of Seven Sirens.
Completed A Short Hike, played Among Us on phone and downloaded but not played it on Switch, and I would buy Moon if it wasn’t so expensive for what it is.
I played Moving Out by Team17.
I've only played 5 of them
Hades
Streets of Rage 4
Huntdown
A Short Hike
Ruiner
The first 4 being among my top 5 games of the year. I have Spiritfarer too and plan on playing it this weekend. I've heard only good things about it.
I will definitely get Lonely Mountains, Alwa's Legacy, Ori, Carrion, Crosscode and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon 2 at some point. Sakuna too, if it ever gets a large discount.
Switch has become my indie, classics, Nintendo first party, port, and multiplayer party game console.
Big titles like Yakuza or Horizon: Zero Dawn are on my PS4, and that’s pretty much it.
Love Switch for indies.
Paradise Killer was fantastic. I hope it gets more and more well known as time goes on. I also really hope a Murder By Numbers sequel is in the works.
Holy crap, 2020 was actually pretty darn good for switch indies. Strangely I bought like 10 of these but didn't appreciate how great the release schedule was last year... for indies at least.
Great group of games there. Odd to not see Phenotopia: Awakening on it though.
So far out of these I've played:
Hades
A Short Hike
Spiritfarer
Lonely Mountains: Downhill
Murder by Numbers
Carto
To the Moon
Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin
Shantae and the Seven Sirens
In Other Waters
Disc Room
Coffee Talk
One Step From Eden
CrossCode
What the Golf?
I have Kentucky Route Zero, Bloodroots, Carrion, Paradise Killer and Aviary Attorney but haven’t gotten around to playing them yet and there’s a few more on the list that I’d like to pick up like Ori and the Will of the Wisps, moon and Superliminal.
Really great year for indie games all up. There are more good ones that didn't make the list.
@Yanina any other year I would think, “there’s so much out there, people are already asking about what’s next!” After 2020, I agree with your statement,
There was a game about kids on rafts collecting trash. I forgot the name of it. I wonder if it’s out yet. Looked kind of interesting.
@Yanina Lol Too bold, apparently. The only company of the big three that's actually forthcoming is Microsoft/XBox (which is super ironic since they typically release the least games)
I own over 300 indie games on my switch and yet don't have most of this list. I usually wait on for something on my wishlist to have a steep price drop. I have Among Us but have yet to play it on Switch, haven't played a Short Hike yet. I do plan on grabbing Super Crush K.O, Vitamin Connection, Lonely Mountains Downhill, and In Other Waters
I have put most time into Hades, while own a couple more like inbento and A Short Hike. Really good selection though.
Very nice. Love indie games and happy to see the variety available on Switch.
I have 15 of these, but haven’t played em all yet.
1.) Hades - Amazing!
2.) Short Hike - Great!
3.) Ori - Great!
4.) Carrion - Good!
5.) Spiritfarer - Amazing!
6.) Kentucky Route Zero - NPY (Not Play Yet)
7.) To the Moon - Amazing!
8.) Panzer Paladin - NPY
9.) Moon - NPY
10.) Alwa’s Legacy - NPY
11.) Ruiner - Good so far, barely into it
12.) Sakuna - Great!
13.) Crosscode - NPY
14.) Curse of the Moon 2 - NPY
15.) Inmost - Good!
Coffee Talk and Aviary Attorney are on my Wishlist to get at some point. And may check out a few others on this list that I haven’t really looked into like Murder by Numbers or I Am Dead....
Short hike is an amazing game to play! I give a 10 out of 10. But the game is short however.
@Rpg-lover Very good game, very short game! I beat the main quest of it in about an hour. There’s probably 3-4 ish hours worth of exploring and chilling. Thankfully, it is a game that one could go back to and still enjoy. Like a miniature animal crossing in terms of explore and chill.
I’ll turn my switch on again when breath oh the wild 2, until then I’m good with my ps5
Where's Dicey Dungeons, Nintendo???
It's great!
@Dm9982 you're spot on, even my 6years old fell in love with the game, together with her cousins.. i wished for dlc if possible. Can't believe a game like that will glue us together like this.
Do you remember when we had this graphics for Nintendo and Big Developers games??
Great Times eh!
Can't believe Scourgebringer isn't on this graphic
I purchased 7 of these and love all every one of em!
Don't believe this, the console has no games.
Funnily enough, I don't think I own any of these. One or two of these I got my eye on, but not yet interested enough to buy.
I only really played Ori and Among Us, but I plans to play most of these games.
@johnvboy 7 days into 2021 and they've shown us absolutely nothing. No Direct, nothing. The year is barren, we have nothing to play etc etc...
Same every year.
Only own Ori from this list of which I haven't started yet. Although I have plenty of backlog, a Direct would be nice to showcase what 2021 has to offer on the 1st party front outside of 3D World.
Just managed to get out of Hades on attempt number 26! Obviously enough has been said already about how great that game is.
Ori is obviously fantastic too.
My other 2 recomendations from this list are Spiritfarer (if you enjoy ACNH and/or Stardew Valley you will enjoy this) and Lonely Mountains Downhill (they actually managed to pull off a great combination between a zen mountain exploration game and a fast bmxing racing game)
The other two games I have played here are A Short Hike (fantastic but won't keep you occupied for long) and What The Golf (fun but the later puzzles ended up a little tedious for me).
Any others I have missed that I should try?
Huntdown is epic. I was sold on that game by the trailer alone and wasn’t surprised to see the great review scores after I’d played it.
I just have Among Us and Moving Out from this list. I will pick up Wunderling, To The Moon, Going Under and maybe Ghost Of A Tale when they're on sale.
I spy 6 games that I've played, but at least 13 that I'd like to play. Money and time, that's all I need.
@WiltonRoots,
Yes and the console will soon see a dip in sales, if not right now it will happen as everybody rushes out to by a Ps5 and Xbox One X. Nintendo need to do something now and release a Switch with Ps5 power, or they are doomed.
Typical niche views on niche gaming sites, that always assume everybody has their narrow minded views and buys things for the same reasons they do, each and every time the Switch passes another sales milestone it's the same old mantra, how can it sell this well with no games or power?..
A never ending source of fun and entertainment.
Quite a few of these on my "to play" list, but none that I've actually played yet. So many games, so little time etc...
Need to pickup Faeria, Last Campfire, Lonely Mountains, Scourgebringer (not on list) and Carrion.
Only two on there that's streets of rage 4 and Shantae and the Seven Sirens great games
Paradise Killer was a great game with an even more amazing soundtrack. (seriously check it out even if you don't think you'll play the game)
Also Murder by Numbers is great if you love Ace Attorney and puzzles. (ditto for Aviary Attorney) The game was actually made by the same studio that made Fall Guys.
Lastly, I played it years ago but To The Moon is also a very special game.
wow, out of all of these I only have bloodroots, a short hike, and huntdown. Just an amazing bounty of Indies
Got a short hike day 1, great game. Streets of rage 4 quite recently for $17 because it was too expensive for me at launch and I didn't like the look of the art style. It was much better than I expected but still not worth the price at launch, you can complete all the levels in a few hours, glad I waited for a sale.
I have more of, and plan to buy more of, these games than the list of biggest selling games. My Vita became an indie machine by default. My Switch is one because I chose to.
Only played Bloodroots on this list so far, but it's pretty damn fun. Being a recurrently zerg-rushed one hitpoint wonder is tough for my lousy action skills, but the checkpoint frequency mitigates it somewhat, and the whole variety of weaponisable environment, including the tactical challenges of some weapons' side effects (like the saber thrust that doubles as a dash to get you over gaps and past many traps) can't but entice. The story is full of wacky black humour and witty lines as well.
Where is Horace?!
Ah yes, everyone's favorite indie game...
Moon...
Out of these I have only played A Short Hike, but that's hands own one of the best things I've played in years! ^^
Hades
Streets of Rage
Short Hike
Grindstone
Among Us
Ori
Spiritfarer
Superliminal
Lonely Mountain Downhill
Murder by Numberd
Last Campfire
To the Moon
Sakuna
Vitamin Connectuon
Shantae and the SS
Faeria
Crosscode
What the Golf?
All vary from decent to outstanding.
Wishlist: Moving Out, Manifold Garden, Coffee Talk, Bloodstained COTM2
@tr4shh
Made by a relatively small team that disbanded twenty years ago, after existing for only five years, never having been bought by any publisher?
By today's standards, it's pretty dang indie.
The current re-release is even being handled by a tiny western indie dev.
