Re: Talking Point: The State of Play - amiibo and Its Next Big Move

RoboBubble

@TruenoGT I've been thinking the same thing re enemy amiibo (esp Metroid), but the mini-systems idea had never occurred to me. That's a great idea, and totally taps into the same nostalgia as the 8-bit amiibo. I'd probably pick up the whole range if they made NES through Wii U systems... plus the handhelds too. If they were linked to something on the Virtual Console, even better.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of the Nintendo Switch Presentation?

RoboBubble

@RoomB31 Yes, $249 USD is closer to $329 CAD — I was just hoping they might go $299 CAD from a marketing perspective, to hit that under $300 sweet spot.

And don't get me wrong, $299 USD is a decent price for the thing in the USA. But I have real concerns that the Switch will struggle in Canada at $399 CAD without a game. Wii U struggled launching at $349 with Nintendo Land (back when CAD and USD prices were nearly equal and the launch price was same price in both Canada and USA).

I realize that currency fluctuations are not Nintendo's fault but the reality for the Canadian consumer is that the price of gaming has greatly increased, making it less affordable for some.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of the Nintendo Switch Presentation?

RoboBubble

The price is Canada — $399! — is ridiculous, especially because it doesn't come with a game. So, a system and game is going to cost me $480? And requires online subscription? And probably requires a large SD card because of minuscule included storage? Nope. I was considering a pre-order, but the price (and lack of exciting launch games) has convinced me to wait for a year or two until the price comes down and there is a better library of games. I'll get BoTW on my Wii U for now.

(For CAD price references, PS4 with bundled game(s) is regularly on sale these days for $329, while the Xbone + bundled game(s) goes for $299. These were generally the prices between Black Friday and Boxing week and these sale prices seem to happen often).

I was really hoping for a $249 USD / $299 CAD launch price, with one game included.

Re: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat Hitting the North American Wii U eShop This Week

RoboBubble

@millarrp @Link41x @sevex — totally agree with you on current prices in Canada. Old Wii games are just not worth the nearly $30 they are asking and I'm refusing to buy them. Sounds like I'm not alone, and it makes me wonder if they wouldn't make more money in sales if they just stuck with the original $20 price. Hard to justify $30 for a digital VC game DRM'ed to your physical machine when disc versions of most Wii games can be had for a small fraction of that price.

I can understand adjusting prices for currency exchange on new retail games, but I don't understand why they do it for Virtual Console.

I'd also note that the Canadian price of SNES on New 3DS is also silly. Although I was originally excited for SNES VC to come to 3DS, I'm pretty disappointed they decided to inflate the price from $8 (as it remains on Wii U) to $11.29. I've already bought most SNES games I want on Wii and Wii U, and I refuse to buy them YET AGAIN at inflated prices on 3DS.

@Hey-Cha-La I really appreciate this info, thanks. Video Games Plus is a couple hours from me, but I was heading that direction anyway a few days later and was able to buy a physical copy in-store. I see that they still have it for order on their website too, if anyone is still looking for it. vgp.ca

Re: Review: Corpse Party (3DS)

RoboBubble

I'll be picking this up down the road, hopefully on sale. I actually would have bought it day one, but I cancelled my pre-order because it's priced higher than a normal 3DS game, probably because they decided to pack in some extra plastic (little dolls). The collectables are great for people that want that, but as I have no prior experience with the game I have no attachment to the characters and just don't want to have more figurines. I wish they had released a standard edition alongside the special edition. $59.99 (Cdn) is just too much to pay for a 3DS game.

Re: Talking Point: The Problems With My Nintendo So Far, and Why All's Not Lost

RoboBubble

You know what I hate? Their mission tiers end in $x.00 while their eShop prices usually end in $x.99. This means that I'm often one cent short of that next Gold Coin tier, or get nothing at all. That is, your $9.99 purchase isn't going to get to the reward for the $10.00+ tier. I hate the tiers to begin with — it would be better if they just rewarded coins as a percentage of eShop purchase price — but if they have to do the tiers, the least they could do would be to coordinate the prices with the tiers. Or better yet, allow multiple purchases to be checked out at once, e.g., two games at $7 and $3 will earn reward for $10 tier. As it stands it's just sloppy and cheap.

Re: Review: Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse (3DS)

RoboBubble

I loved SMTIV — it's probably my favourite 3DS games. I bought it on release and put over 80 hours in... but strangely, didn't quite finish the game - I must have become distracted with other titles. I think I'll invest a few hours to complete the final stretch of SMTIV (3 years later) before picking up Apocalypse ... looking forward to it.

Re: Super Pitfall Gets The Fan-Made 30th Anniversary Makeover It So Badly Needed

RoboBubble

@Xyphon22 I hear you! I had this game as a kid too and worked diligently until I finally beat it, which was immensely satisfying given how the poor game design thwarts the player unfairly at every turn. I actually remember the game with some fondness, despite the frustrations. I even still have the original NES game box, which has a pretty cool (albeit entirely misleading) illustration on the cover.

Re: Maximum Games Takes Over Avanquest to Expand Global Reach

RoboBubble

That port of Myst on 3DS has to be one of the worst-made games in the 3DS library. I bought it and played for maybe 30 minutes before deciding that the control scheme and presentation were so poor as to make this version nearly unplayable. A shame since the original was apparently well-regarded for its time, and I had been looking forward to finally playing it.

Re: Konami and Capcom Are Bringing Some SNES Classics to New 3DS

RoboBubble

Has anyone else in Canada noticed that the price of these SNES games on N3DS is $11.29 CAD, while on Wii U it's $7.99 CAD. Why charge more on one platform? There's no way I'm paying that price, especially when I've already purchased a lot of these games on Wii U. It's too bad, as I was genuinely excited about playing these games on N3DS.

Re: Konami and Capcom Are Bringing Some SNES Classics to New 3DS

RoboBubble

@XCWarrior I totally agree with you. Especially now with the creation of the My Nintendo Account thing, cross-buy should be implemented. I already own a lot of these games on Wii and Wii U, and as much as I'd like them on my N3DS, I won't be paying again. I would however consider paying a small upgrade fee (like Wii->WiiU) in the range of $1-2.

Re: Nintendo Download: 14th January (North America)

RoboBubble

For anyone wondering about Sonic and AllStars Racing Transformed it's actually a really good game (on Wii U that is, not so much on the 3DS I hear). Totally worth adding to your Wii U collection IMO ... but depending on the eShop sale price, you might be able to find a used disc for less.

Re: GameStop Cancels European Rosalina amiibo Pre-Orders as the Scrabble for Stock Continues

RoboBubble

I really had no interest in the Amiibo initially but a few weeks ago I thought I'd try to order a Mega Man for use in Smash Bros, as he is my favourite character. To my surprise, pre-orders at all websites I checked were sold out, and this was over a month before release. That's just ridiculous for a product that Nintendo is not even willing to call "limited edition." EBay and Amazon now have listings by scalpers trying to sell their pre-orders of Mega Man for up to $60. There's no way I'm paying that. I'm disappointed in the situation.

Re: Review: Mighty Gunvolt (3DS eShop)

RoboBubble

This is a not a great game, but it is a great TRIBUTE to NES-era games. If, like me, you have fond memories of NES gaming in the '80s, Mighty Gunvolt is definitely worth playing. It's an excellent homage to the quickly produced b-games of that era, right down to poorly translated and nonsensical text, short play time, limited options, uneven difficulty. Graphically and musically, it perfectly mimics the average games of that era with repetitive environments, overuse of a few enemies, unmemorable chip-tunes and bizarre non-sequiturs (I loved the weird speakers that blast out the letters L-O-V-E). If you want an excellent game that looks at the 8-bit era through rose-coloured glasses, buy Shovel Night or Mutant Mudds or Cave Story. If you want a game that truly recreates the feeling of playing a typical game in the 80s, Mighty Gunvolt is perfect. I really enjoyed it (including the DLC).

Re: Online Retailers Offer Huge Discounts on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U Hardware Bundles in the UK

@SteveButler2210
Don't be afraid of the white 8GB Wii U. You can usually buy one for MUCH cheaper than the 32GB model (I got my 8GB model for $100) and it's very simple to plug in a hard drive. For me the price difference made it a no-brainer to go with 8GB. It's true that the 8GB model has next to no storage after updates (around 2GB I think), making an HDD a necessity, but I figured that I would be adding an external HDD with either model anyway, so there's nothing lost. 32GB storage (low 20s after OS and updates) isn't really very big anyway. I'm very happy with my white Wii U.

Re: Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty Wii U Delay Seems to be Due to 8GB Basic Model

RoboBubble

I bought the white 8GB Wii U since it really didn't matter which one I got; I knew I'd be hooking up external storage either way. By the way, the 8GB unit had only just 2GB of usable space after OS updates and such. The developer here catering to the scenario of a customer with an 8GB Wii U and full storage capacity of 2GB remaining seems like an odd choice. I expect most other 8GB owners will also have external storage, and if they don't, then they're not buying downloadable games.
