Nintendo has announced it will collaborate with Tokyo-based publisher & developer GungHo Online Entertainment to release an exclusive Mario-themed variation of the company's popular mobile hit, Puzzle & Dragons, on the 3DS later this year.
The 3DS adaptation, Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition, will be released in Japan on 29th April for 4,000 yen.
The announcement was revealed at GungHo's New Games Presentation, when Shigeru Miyamoto took to the stage and explained how he had grown fond of Puzzle & Dragons after seeing a number of Nintendo employees enjoying the title. This led to the creation of Puzzle & Dragons Z, and eventually Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition.
The special Mario-themed puzzle RPG will focus on Bowser's kidnapping of Peach, with Mario once again tasked with saving the princess, whilst befriending familiar faces along the way. Additionally, the title will include both StreetPass and local multiplayer.
Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition will be available in stores and via the eShop, with GungHo also confirming Nintendo will be in charge of publishing rights in regions outside of Japan. We will let you know as soon as a western release date is announced.
Take a look at the announcement trailer and extended footage of the game below, and let us know in the comments if you're excited about this upcoming 3DS release.

As I said on GX's video "Wow, this actually looks really fun and high quality! Youkai Watch killer?"
According to this tweet a western release is confirmed.

Was the original ever released in western regions ?
I hear this game coming up and hailed all the time :/
So it looks like there will be a Mario game this year lol! I'd give it a go. Kinda reminds me of that strategy ds game where you had to match three units together and it was turn based (name slips me). Loved playing that.
As mentioned in the article, a local release of the Super Mario Bros. Edition is confirmed for the west, with Nintendo responsible for publishing the title.
As for Puzzle & Dragons Z, the title has been confirmed for the west since last year, but we're still waiting on a release date.
When I first read the headline I thought it was a Mario themed version of the game on actual smartphones and tablets. I think that could have been a very shrewd marketing move on Nintendo's part actually and if it were up to me I would in fact have this release both as a dedicated 3DS version and as a Mario skinned version of the game on smartphones and tablets too (which would please the shareholders no end).
The point of having the smartphone/tablet version is that it brings Mario/Nintendo to the masses of total casuals out there, who are currently playing these devices, and it might in a roundabout way actually help bring a bunch of them back to Nintendo's own hardware down the line. Also; this is obviously the kind of 'Nintendo game' that would be perfectly suited to these smartphones and tablets seeing as those were the devices it was created for and launched on in the first place.
This is exciting. I've been hearing a lot about this game and how addicted the Japanese gaming world is. But if I remember correctly this was f2p on the phone. (Maybe I'm wrong). But this concept as an actual full price game without microtransaction is just awesome. I've been playing those kind of games on the iphone for a while but the f2p aspect always leaves a bitter taste...can't wait.
I'm sold. Want a western release date! Come ooooonnnnn New Direct!
Ka-ching!
Aounuma love the Warriors serie and we got Hyrule Warriors, Miyamoto got interested in Puzzle and Dragon and we gonna get the P&D Super Mario edition.
I love this Nintendo attitude to collaborate with other companies based on the games they like, can't wait to see which unexpected crossover we will get next
Take notes, Pop Cap/Rovio! This is how you shamelessly put your iOS games on a Nintendo system; by branding it with Nintendo's IP!
This is an incredibly smart move.
While this looks really interesting, I was hoping for the original version to come here first. Oh well
Edit: @Kirk I agree, having this game released on smartphones would've been a smart decision for both companies, especially since the PAD domination is fading away slowly and Nintendo wants to take advantage of the widespread use of mobile to advertise their IP's.
My PAD addiction is strong. Buying this when it comes to the US.
I like these out of the blue announcements. Another game for 3ds is great news.
Sold!
Seems awesome, can't wait!
Interesting. Looking forward to it.
@Player4 @Kirk - While I think Nintendo is sorely lacking in embracing mobile, having this as a potential timed exclusive on the 3DS and then releasing the Mario skin as mobile DLC 6 months to a year later would make the most sense for selling the 3DS version which costs about $30 more. This will happen unless Nintendo really doesnt want Mario on smart devices. Though it would be odd if yhis were to be Marios 1st legitimate mobile game, I always assumed some Dr Mario variant would lead the way.
Now where is the western version of Z, held up in customs w/ Wonder Flick and Yokai Watch?
looks awesome, count me in!
"Why doesn't Nintendo go mobile?"
"Why doesn't Nintendo go mobile?"
"Why doesn't Nintendo go mobile?"
Well...it appears Nintendo has once again defied expectations, and mobile has gone Nintendo!
Sounds cool, apparently this Puzzle and Dragons game is HUGE in Japan.
This actually looks fairly fun, provided it gets a western release and comes in physical form, I may consider purchasing it. I don't have many 3DS games on my wanted list for this year after all.
Also, according to a recent Mynintendonews article, Nintendo's stock has gone up quite a bit after this announcement. I'd post the list, but can't remember off the top of my head if I'm allowed to on this site. Ah well, I'm sure Nintendo Life will report on it fairly soon.
I had a feeling something like this was coming, considering Miyamoto has said numerous times how big a Puzzles and Dragons fan he is. It's one of the only mobile games he plays on his phone.
@bouncer0304 Actually, this is the third Mario game for 2015. The Wii U is getting Mario Party 10 and Mario make, while the 3DS is getting this game.
@Caryslan Isn't there a Mario vs Donkey Kong game coming out as well?
@Caryslan You are indeed correct. I think Miyamoto must have meant no core Mario game then when he got asked a few days back. Totally forgot about those titles. Still i'd like to see this one released outside of Japan. I wonder if we'll get a Nintendo direct later on with this and the badge app being released? Then again we're still waiting for flipnote 3d and GBA games on the 3ds, unless they pull a dirty trick and only allow the new 3ds to download it? Hope not but this is Nintendo...
@bouncer0304 I doubt this game is New model exclusive. Doesn't seem like a very demanding game to require the extra power.
Still waiting for Puzzle & Dragon Z to come overseas, but hey, I'm fine with any version, as long as it still has the content from Z.
It looks very fun i want it now.
I'll have to try out the original Puzzle and Dragons to see if I'll consider it...
Should be on phone, 3DS is outdated hardware, low resolution screen compared to any $50 phone even. The "new" 3DS is weaker and worse than my 2 year old phone, its pathetic.
Huge for me. I've been playing PAD for almost two years. So long as this version doesn't use micro transactions it could be fantastic.
I would rather play the regular Puzzle and Dragons game, which still doesn't appear to be out over here (the US).
This brings the number of Mario-themed games for 2015 to 4 already. Yeesh.
@GamerJunkie Insulting Nintendo hardware, are you? And going back through your previous comments in other articles, how pathetic can you be as a gamer when you said you currently own all systems of the 3 big companies. It's a wonder why you (and other users with similar questionable attitudes) are even here.
@Einherjar
Original mobile version has been here for quite a while now. We just don't have Z.
@faren916 Its pathetic that you suck up to companies as if its your family... stop being a fanboy please. I love Nintendo games, but their hardware is always lacking. That is why they are already working on Wii U - 2. Wii U has already maxed out. The 3DS is way underpowered, they made a new one and its barely stronger... why? A $50 phone has a more powerful GPU, more RAM, better CPU, why can't they do it for $200 cost of the new 3DS? and low rez screens why?
@bouncer0304 I keep seeing people mention no Mario game in 2015 confirmed... but I do not see where the news came from. I do not remember seeing an article on NintendoLife. Do you have a source?
I like the looks of this. Hoping for a western release.
I'm very interested just because, according to reviews, Puzzle Dragon made a very successful transition from it's original mutli-method-microtransaction game design to a proper 3DS retail title. So, this could be fun without the nickel and diming.
I might be played out on these types of games. I much prefer 10,000,000 or Dungeon Raid and a couple others on mobile when it comes to Puzzle RPGs.
Where's @Quorthon? He'll be happy about another Mario game tie-in. (oops, ninja'd me)
@GamerJunkie
$50 phone better hardware. Off contract? No. Or I should say: show me.
@Shadowkiller97 i've seen it on their twitter feed as well as MVC, Nintendo everything, Kotaku and others. They're basically the same story but not much info in each. Then again this is Nintendo so anything could happen or it could be a mistranslated like when it was circulating that Miyamoto was retiring lol!
EDIT- Just found this: http://www.forbes.com/sites/olliebarder/2015/01/04/nintendo-executive-confirms-no-new-mario-game-for-2015/?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=t.co
@AVahne Well, must be the usual "not in your country" thingy here in germany as its not available on the PlayStore :/
@GamerJunkie I really wish that you knew what you were talking about But dont mind me, keep having your anger tantrum
I liked Puzzle and Dragons on the app store, so I'm interested in this and Z.
@Einherjar
Aw, sorry to read/hear that. If you REALLY wanted to play it, you could try hunting down the latest APK for the American version. Lots of people are apparently doing that for Terra Battle. Shouldn't be much different for Puzzle & Dragon.
@aaronsullivan
You know, I guess if Nintendo wants me to buy more games for my PS4, this is the way to encourage it. The less there is to hold my interest on the Wii U and 3DS, the more I can get for the PS4 and Vita.
Bloodborne, Witcher 3, The Order: 1886, Uncharted 4*, and Godzilla are all coming up the first half of this year.
*Edit: Added Uncharted 4 after I finished the sentence, forgot it wasn't coming until much later.
@bouncer0304 Hmm... The Forbes article is referencing a quote from Bill Trinen's interview with Reno Gazette-Journal. In that interview he says "we don't have a new Mario game this year." But according to that article the interview took place in 2014 before the Christmas Holidays. Wouldn’t that mean he was talking about how there was no Mario game in 2014? I see nothing about 2015...
Seems like Forbes reported on an article they didn't even fully read...
@rjejr
Yeah, good point. A timed exclusive on the 3DS and then a bit later a release on the mobile phones would be a smart way to go about it.
@Quorthon
Uncharted 4?
@Shadowkiller97 that is a good point actually. If there is no new core Mario game this year though then i don't think it'll be such a bad thing but as we've seen before Nintendo reps has been misquoted in the past so it could be the opposite. I'm intreagued by the new badge app and this game so i want to see them released but i don't think Mario Maker is to be sniffed at. Maybe a Nintendo direct will reveal all in the next few months or E3 at least.
@sinalefa
My bad, I added that after I finished the sentence. Uncharted 4 is not coming the first half of this year.
@bouncer0304
What do you mean no new "core" Mario game? Even without another 3D Land/World or Galaxy, there are still three other Mario-themed games coming out in 2015. This makes 4. And no doubt, there'll be another one of some kind revealed at or around E3.
@GamerJunkie Cool story bro. Enjoy your phone then.
After seeing that trailer, this is now a pre-order game.
A part of me hope for a Pokemon X Puzzle & Dragons (Puzzle & Pokemon) but this is good too. I like the mobile version out now but I'll love any of the 3ds version if it comes westside.
Hm. I have battle trozei and enjoyed it so far (only 3 hours in) but im not sure if this will work as a full retail game but well see.
Um... YES, PLEASE!!
Hmm, cool! 😄
@Quorthon Bill Trinen said that there is "no new Mario game this year". By that, he meant core titles (NSMB, 3D Land/World, or Galaxy/some collect-a-thon Mario). Obviously, he wasn't including spin offs.
Also, does the inevitable Isle Delfino map for Splatoon make it 5 Mario games?
@IceClimbers
WELL OF COURSE IT MEANS SPLATOON IS A MARIO GAME NOW!!
Seriously though, it doesn't have Mario in the title and the Mario franchise is not the core style or appeal of the game, so no. Splatoon is no more a Mario game than Mario Kart 8 is an F-Zero game for having an F-Zero track and Captain Falcon's er, "car."
I like Bill Trinnen, but that's clearly just "corporate speak," as it were. He doesn't spell out what a "core" Mario game is, for that matter. Is it a specific off-shoot of the platformer? Does he mean a major AAA undertaking? Would Super Mario World 2 or Mario 3D Land count? What of New Super Mario Bros?
If it has Mario in the title, features Mario-esque graphics, Mario themes, Mario characters, Mario music, and Mario "charm," it's a Mario game. Just because that character has been spun off into numerous IPs doesn't mean they aren't all Mario games. If anything, Nintendo has just made things unnecessarily complicated when talking about them.
However, this Puzzle and Dragons Mario is like Hyrule Warriors--it fits into the catalog of two franchises at once. Granted, I would still prefer just the regular Puzzle and Dragons game if it's so damn good.
So far, we only know of two games for Nintendo's fall/winter 2015 line-up: Zelda U and StarFox. (Maybe Xenoblade Chronicles X because what the hell is taking so long?! Or that Shin Megami X Fire Emblem vaporware.) I fully expect to see something elseof Mario--at least one more game--crammed into that space around E3. Oh, man, maybe this is the year they push out an HD remake of Mario Sunshine or the Mario Galaxy games, because I've been expecting that for years BECAUSE EASY MONEY!
@Quorthon A "core" Mario title means the 2D and 3D platformers featuring Mario as the main character (Yoshi's Island, Captain Toad, and Super Princess Peach don't count in this case, though New Super Luigi U does). Everything else is a spinoff.
Takahashi recently tweeted that Xenoblade Chronicles X is entering the final stages of development. It has a Spring release in Japan, and currently a 2015 release elsewhere. So probably September/October in the US... and Q1 2016 in Europe because Nintendo.
With the Splatoon thing, I'm honestly not sure how well Isle Delfino would blend with Splatoon's art style now that I think about it. Either way though, some sort of Sunshine content will appear in Splatoon (perhaps a FLUDD skin for the ink pack? Mario making a cameo after a match where he cleans up the ink?). That much I think is obvious.
@AVahne Na, its ok Thank you anyways, this is actually a good idea.
The point is, that is such a "cheap game" title, that comes up all the time and people speak pretty highly off it.
I just wanted to know what this is all about, but the APK might be an idea.
This game supposed to be Super Bowser Bros.
Is that Dragon Kirby, my dream has finally had come true
@BakaKnight Good things it's game they like, otherwise they wouldn't put their heart into it!
Is the Mario one going to reach the US before the regular one? I mean it looks cute so I'm ok with it, but that just seems like it'd be weird. I've been waiting a long time for the regular one to come out and had kinda given up on it.
