Shovel Knight has been a notable debut success for Yacht Club Games, and it's still ongoing. As a result of numerous stretch goals from the original Kickstarter campaign the studio has been working - for well over a year - on free updates.
The studio has now sent out a status update to backers, also shared on its website, outlining some key details about content currently in development. As previously confirmed it's the Specter Knight campaign currently in the works, and the GIFs below show the character's moveset in action.

Though they won't all arrive at the same time, Yacht Club games is working on all of the extras at once - below is a segment from the blog post.
That means Specter Knight, King Knight, Body Swap, and Battle Mode (for PC and consoles). That's a lot more game — and it should arrive sooner than the wait between Shovel Knight and Plague Knight. Creating these updates simultaneously will allow us to plan more cohesively. How levels change between the two characters, how much time is needed for new mechanics/systems, stories interweaving, and so on. Once we're nearing completion on one set of updates, we'll be switching our focus to a single campaign to make sure it's polished for release. Then we'll be doing the same by switching to the next campaign! Here are some answers to the most frequent questions:
- We're working on two new campaigns: Specter Knight and King Knight.
- Campaigns will not be releasing at the same time. Specter Knight will be released first!
- No estimated release date for any Update quite yet.
- Similar to our last update, we'll probably go overboard too. Hey! Maybe that's why we're called Yacht Club Games!
- New campaigns will come with new Feats and Challenges for the new campaign character!
- We're also working on two new modes: Body Swap and Battle Mode!
- Just like Plague of Shadows releasing with Challenge Mode, we're planning to release one of these new modes alongside each campaign.
- Battle Mode is being designed as a single screen, multiple controller, multiplayer mode and is currently not planned to arrive on handheld versions of the game. We'll be sure to announce if there are any changes on that front.
- Much like Plague of Shadows, all of the announced upcoming Shovel Knight content will be free on ALL platforms! For disc/cart and digital versions!
It seems extraordinary that all of this content will be free, even if it was promised all that time ago on Kickstarter. Are you excited about more Shovel Knight goodness, and which mode / extra are you most keen to try?
Thanks to all that sent this in.

Wow, they are doing a great job. Picking up mighty no. 9s slack
Goodness these guys are something. Looking forward to it!
Patiently waiting for new content. I know it'll be good so I can wait.
Sweet, I'm glad they're still keeping busy. Hopefully that Sectar Knight campaign will be out before the end of the year.
Nice to see some good news revolving around a Kickstarter game, amirite?
Specter Knights moveset to me looks a lot more interesting and fun than Plague Knights was. Looking forward to it.
I just finished reading the update in my email, can't wait for this DLC. On a related note, I should finish the Plague Knight DLC, which is excellent so far. Yacht Club is really making me feel good about my investment.
Looking forward to this but I wish we could have campaigns for all the characters. Tinker knight would be so fun, it could be all about gadgets! Or propellor knight! Mr. Hat! I know, I know, I shouldn't complain, I mean we're getting all this for free as is...
Specter Knight looks pretty fun. I can't wait until his campaign comes out, though I'm more interested in how King Knight's is gonna be
Hope Specter Knight has a power to at least temporarily fly around, that was kinda his deal. Also summon ally skeletons! :3
God, these guys are amazing. Cheers to you, Yacht Club!

I feel so bad accepting this new content because I feel like I should be paying for this free content lol. Well I mean I could just buy Shovel Knight on yet another console. That would make up for it right?
I do love that they're doing this because I love Shovel Knight, but I kind of wish they would move on to something new. Maybe go ahead and get started on Super Shovel Knight, or Shovel Knight 64 or something.
The game that keeps on giving.
This can't be a coincidence that they sent this out on MNo 9's release date lol
YASSSS! I'm so excited for finally getting info on Specter Knight! Plague of Shadows was awesome, and this new campaign looks to be just as good!
I'm so hyped for Specter Knight
@DarthNocturnal Your comment just reminded me of an article I read discussing the pros/cons of continuing support for existing good games vs making sequels that may not live up to the original. I'm torn on that personally.
Just wow. Yacht Club games is really going to outdo themselves with all this free dlc! I know they promised they would make it, but the quality of the dlc they have been releasing is just fabulous. It's nice to see someone live up to their promises.
ShovelKnight is already in my top 10 games ever and it just keeps going up in said list. Yacht Club Games are really good at this. I seriously wonder where they'll go next.
I have to admit I strongly disliked Plague Knight's campaign. I got through 2-3 levels and couldn't stand any more of it; I thought it controlled horribly. Hope this one fairs better, since I adored Shovel Knight.
Great stuff, I haven't even picked the game up yet but it's now top of my e shop list after getting fast racing neo last week. More game when I buy is only ever a good thing!! 😁
At this point nobody would berate them for backpedaling on their kickstarter promises and yet they deliver beyond our expectations. Stay awesome Yacht club.
Been waiting for an update on this! looks like Specter Knight's campaign is shaping up really well. Very interested in what his story will be... I'm thinking the fact that his health is labeled as 'will' probably has something to do with it.
I didn't back this game when the kickstarter came around (didn't even know about kickstarter back then, lol) but I really wish I had. At least I was able to give YC money anyway by buying it outright. Even then, I still feel like I should be giving them more for this dlc.
I'm not a huge fan of the game, but I'm glad I got it because there is just so much amazing content for such a low price! 😉
As grateful as I am for Yacht Club being so darn generous with the free updates I would much rather they put the money into the sequel that they are no doubt working on. Shovel Knight was already a great value even at launch but by the time the extra content is released I think we are getting WAY more than we paid for!
Excite!
Now all that's left is a Zelda level. You know, what with... Battletoads... and God Of War...
While I'm not the biggest fan of this game, I'm still looking forward to these updates. Now if only I could get the game to reliably start on my 3ds...
Here's another GIF featuring King Knight:

I'm excited for battle mode!
Hopefully they keep the quality up to the high standards of everything else they've done so far.
@dadajo Same. I've already given them $100 between backing them on Kickstarter (got the box, manual, and CD), buying the game again on 3DS, and buying the amiibo, but I'm probably gonna buy a PC copy too by the time this is done.
Hear that, Inafune? Take some notes.
Absolutely love this game and can't wait for the new content!
Yacht Club Games has really proven how great they are, and if they wanted funding for another game, I would gladly throw money at them with the quality they put into their games, and I NEVER help fund games on kickstarter.
I'm certainly excited to play Specter Knight. He was my favorite.
@AlexSora89 I personally want to see the Nintendo versions get an exclusive Meta Knight battle. They could honestly just pull his sprite straight from Kirby's Adventure on NES.
There also gameplay of King Knight's campaign:

Good. Knock out the rest of the DLC and get to work on a sequel. What I would give for a Shovel Knight II...
This game mark my soul forever.
Nah tio late for this... I'm now burned on this stage s and assets. I rather wish they were working on a true sequel... Who cares about the stretch goals. 2 years already
I wish they'd just make a Shovel Knight 2 at this point. Can't be bothered to replay these same levels again.
I love games that keep on giving. Loosens my purse strings for more projects by a dev.
Cool stuff, of course. But I hope they will also do a sequel someday!
@Evenmoresteven if they moved on from shovel knight now or even after spectre knight they would get alot of hate since spectre, plague, and king knight were all kickstarter story goals and they plan to finish all the kickstarter goals before anything else.
@FlaygletheBagel i would prefer if they did something other then shovel knight to see if they can work their magic on a different kind of game for variety's sake then make a shovel sequal. (to also give them some time to think up more knights and a new story)
Please give us shovel knight 2!!!
From my point of view it will be tough to surpass Plague Knight's campaign. He is such a creative character, flying around the stages with bomb bursts has been a ton of fun to me and his arsenal allowed for some very entertaining combinations.
That said, Specter Knight's campaign looks like it will be very swift and (classic) Ninja Gaiden like which does seem quite entertaining to me. Even if it won't come close to what I liked about Plague Knight, I am very much looking forward to this one and also King Knight.
@edgedino Something new would be interesting too. Me, I kind of want them to treat Shovel Knight like Mega Man, and just release a handful of similar sequels, then move on to Super Shovel Knight (16 bit version). Shovel Knight is just so damn good and I would love for them to revisit it as soon as possible.
Specter Knight doesn't look anywhere near as interesting as Plague Knight did, but I'm still very much looking forward to the extra campaign.
I barely do action games anymore, but I really enjoyed Shovel Knight.
More awesome content .
I w8 for new project. SK is great, but why do not create something new?
3DS owners getting shafted again.
The Specter Knight gameplay looks very Ninja Gaiden-esque... which is awesome.
How are they still creating content for free? Is there a way to donate?
Wow... speechless. Thanks Yacht Club, simply amazing. That reminds me, I need to find time to complete Plague Knights quest lol
@vonseux " Who cares about the stretch goals. 2 years already"
From what I see in the comments section and reddit, plenty of people do. It's incredible that people complain even when they receive more quality content for free and yeah, it doesn't matter if two years have passed, it's nice to see a kickstarter project deliver what they promised, specially for the people that supported it with money.
Yacht Club has to keep doing the stretch goals. It would damage the brand if they stopped. By fulfilling their promises, they will have an easier time going forward, crowdfunding or not. If they do Kickstarter again, they're practically guaranteed massive overfunding because Yacht Club has a track record of delivering.
I finally got Shovel Knight last September, Linux version. Loved it. I thought Plague Knight's game was even better than Shovel Knight's. No complaints about controls from me as I had more fun with Plague Knight. Spectre Knight's air attack reminds me of the jump kick in Shinobi 3. Perhaps that campaign was influenced by the best ninja games. I look forward to the extra campaigns as Plague Knight was so different despite being in the same places.
@sdelfin I just purchased shinobi 3 a few days ago and I ended up finishing the game the same day. It's an amazing game, I can't believe how much fun it is. The last level is quite frustrating though, but still it's one of the best purchases I ever made and the 3D effect looks beautiful. The expert ninja controls were also quite a good improvement in my opinion.
Agreed. I'm so glad Yatch Club is doing this, they are becoming one of the favourite developers for many in the gaming community. I just wish people would appreciate more what they are doing. I can't find it but I think I read somewhere that while Plague of Shadows received amazing reviews, a good portion of the people that bought the game didn't try that campaign even if it was for free. There are a lot of good games and most of the gamers don't have enough time to try them all, but this game is such an amazing experience and so much care has been put into it that I hope people try to open a little space on their agendas to give them the attention they deserve.
@MarioPhD I couldn't dissagree more! Plague Knight played and controlled so much better than Shovel Knight did. It was a real masterclass in platforming that re-wrote the rules.
@Miiamoto Glad you enjoyed it! I found the jumping unpredictable and by extension that broke the gameplay for me personally. Oh well. I definitely have high hopes for the next update and future Yacht Club titles.
@MarioPHD While I also am in the group of those who prefer Plague of Shadows and its controls, I respect the opinions of those who tried it and didn't like it. There are some highly-praised games I don't like for various reasons too. It's a fact that Plague Knight controls more loosely than Shovel Knight. It doesn't bother me. But the point of my reply is to point out how it's the same debate as Super Mario Brothers and Wonder Boy that was featured on this site a while back. The creator of Wonder Boy didn't like how Mario controlled so he made his own game with tighter control.
@roy130390 Glad you liked Shinobi 3 so much. It's one of my favorites on the Genesis and I go back to it over and over. I love that music The last level does get a lot easier after some practice. It's a very fair challenge once you do it a few times. It wore me out for a while though. I don't have the 3DS version, but I've heard great things.
I suppose the drop off from Shovel Knight to Plague of Shadows is to be expected. People who missed it are missing out on what is, to me, a great experience. Yacht Club is doing a lot of things right. While some suggest they should dump the remaining campaigns, people will punish them for breaking promises. It may be a lot of work to do those at no extra charge, but that will pay off in the long run because their next project will be almost guaranteed to succeed. I certainly put them near the top of my list right now.
