Re: Talking Point: Which Zelda Game Should You Play First?

NimrodsSon

I'd always say A Link to the Past. The best introduction to the logic and puzzle aspects, long enough to be satisfying and the first introduction to some enduring mechanics.

After that, Ocarina of Time, although on the 3DS as the Water Temple stinks otherwise.

Re: Gallery: Feast Your Eyes On Metroid Dread's Special Edition

Arrived this morning, and it is very nice. Not sure of the point of the flimsy plastic shell that sits round the whole thing as it achieves nothing, and is the only real plastic outside of the game case. The box it came in rapidly became a spaceship for my one year old as well. He had a lovely time.

Re: Metroid Series Tops Wii U eShop's "Best Sellers" List Following Dread Reveal

Dusted off the N3DSXL for a repeat burn through Samus Returns, and what a complete joy it is. 3D is excellent throughout too. If I can get away with it, I might set up the Wii U for a go Prime Trilogy, assuming my Wii controllers actually still work.

I am incredibly excited by Dread's arrival. Moreso than a man in his forties should be, if I'm honest.

Re: Soapbox: After 17 Years, Monster Hunter Rise Finally Made Me Kind Of Competent

NimrodsSon

I've had a good crack at MH3U, MH4 and MHW, and Rise is the first one I've actually been any good at. So much so that the credits rolled last night without me realising I was anywhere near that stage. It does seem to be far more welcoming than any of the other ones I've tried, and I'm now eager to dive into the post credits content having previously lost my rag with all of the other ones. So much so, in fact, that I've queued up MHW again on Game Pass to see if I like it any more than I did.

Re: Talking Point: Are You A 'Complete-In-Box' Or 'Loose Cart' Retro Gamer?

NimrodsSon

@Bunkerneath Completely with you on this. I am a vinyl nerd as well, and I don't see the point of buying records and not playing them. You've got a collection to look at and nothing else.

SNES cartridges are loose, otherwise everything stays in its box until it is used. Whatever possessed Nintendo to issue games in cardboard is beyond me anyway.

Re: Review: Hyper Light Drifter: Special Edition (Switch eShop)

NimrodsSon

@fuzzy833 - personally speaking, this. I found it infinitely more satisfying, great soundtrack, glacial drip-feed of information and a really tough but rewarding battle system. And it isn't a roguelike, which are bloody everywhere at the moment. This will be the third time I've bought this, if that tells you anything (aside from me being an idiotic spendthrift).

Re: Hollow Knight: Gods & Glory Arrives On Switch August 23rd

NimrodsSon

Seventeen hours in and counting. Still got such a ridiculous amount of things to do and bosses to kill and collectables to find. Cracking value, and if there is a physical edition en route, I won't be able to give them my money quick enough. I vote HK Amiibo please, and not in feeble amounts either.

Re: Poll: As "Gaming Disorder" Becomes A Thing, Is It Time To Assess How Much You Play?

NimrodsSon

When I first met my now wife, she voiced concerns that I played too much. This was until I pointed out that she actually spent more time casual gaming on her phone than I did on any console. The discussion didn't last long.

All this "news" will do is stigmatise gaming once more. As many people have said (myself included), it is an invaluable tool for combatting depression and social anxieties, and as long as it doesn't interfere with essential everyday life, more power to us all. It's all about balance.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Version 1.4.0 Launches Later This Week

NimrodsSon

Shoddy portable framerate aside, I really enjoyed it from start to finish. The mechanics were solid, the story was pretty decent (including the fairly esoteric ending which I genuinely thought was ace), and characters I actually gave two sh1ts about. I really struggled with XCX, but this (to me) was nicely streamlined and well worth the 140 hours I chucked at it.

Re: Nintendo On How It Views Indie and AAA Games

NimrodsSon

I remember when this all used to be civil and people didn't get so worked up about stuff. I like my Switch. It has games that I enjoy playing. I also enjoy my PS4 for the same reason. See also X1.

Personally speaking, I think the Switch has a nice spread of stuff coming out. The multi-format stuff is acquitting itself well enough, and the exclusives have been fun. Indie is a fairly nebulous term these days. Good games are good games.
