It’s nice, but not worth paying nearly double that of the standard edition.
In any case, it’s ridiculous that Nintendo grossly underproduces hotly demanded special editions while overproducing others.
There should at least be an allocation of these editions for sale after release.
I was tempted but decided that it wasn’t quite worth the extra money. Only really have the special edition of Smash because that included the GameCube adapter and a controller.
As a huge Metroid fan, I want this SO bad. But I can't justify paying more than the $90 that it's supposed to be. I followed a couple of the links above knowing that they'd be out of stock but now it's even worse- the links say "Add to cart" but it never actually adds to the cart. It's such a torment!
My special edition arrived at the same time as my Switch OLED, and I was surprised by just how much bigger the packaging was than that for the Switch system's.
All the same it's a nice package, but I liked the special edition for Samus Returns on the 3DS more.
I'm happy for those that like it. But for myself I didn't get it partly because I'm trying to cut down the amount of plastic I buy as we've only got one planet. Every bit less plastic means less oil extraction. If we all ask nintendo to switch from plastic to something eco they will.
Looks nice. Aint getting it though.
Like most special editions it's nice to look at for aproximately 15 minutes then it's just going to be sitting on the shelf for the rest of eternity. Just not worth it in my opinion.
@Helloworld117
Have you tried any of the purchase links in the article?
For US customers it looks like GameStop actually has it in stock for a sane price.
And then there's Walmart and Amazon charging more than double the RRP.
Picked up the game this morning (regular edition). They gave me some free Metroid Dread pins which look pretty nifty, apparently the last set they had.
Ordered mine from the My Nintendo Store in June or something; wasn’t delivered today. Pretty sh*t tbh.
I did pick this up when the preorders went live, but if I’m honest the extra physical content is lacking the the price. I’m a magpie and generally a collector of special editions but this one sadly didn’t seem to represent value for money (game good though, so far!)
Arrived this morning, and it is very nice. Not sure of the point of the flimsy plastic shell that sits round the whole thing as it achieves nothing, and is the only real plastic outside of the game case. The box it came in rapidly became a spaceship for my one year old as well. He had a lovely time.
I too was surprised on how big the box was when mine arrived. I was expecting it to be half the size. I was also Surprised that the artbook was hardback and not softback as the images showed.
Tempting, but it's $30 more and I'd have to give up my Metroid coffee mug 😂
What exactly is "FOMA" supposed to stand for, again? Fear Of Missing Aran?
I got one simply to keep it out of the hands of scalpers, same with the Amiibo. The book will be read when I've finished Dread, then I'll consider passing all but the actual game on at cost.
I'm not a collector, and will likely make my money back so win-win really.
*Edit: I love the way it's been packed too, the plastic outer shell is great for keeping it mint.
Against my better judgement, I ordered this and it's already shelved for long term storage. Don't get me wrong, I don't regret it and I'm a huge fan but I really only wanted to steel book and, you guessed it, the game.
Happy I bought it but I really could've just went with the cart and case. It's beautiful though... If there was any special edition I was ordering, it was this one. 👍
@RupeeClock agreed on all counts. I love the Returns box set. The SE of Three Houses, Xenoblade 1, and Xenoblade 2 collectively take up a ridiculous amount of space. With this one now as well, I feel like I'll need to build another room soon.
I just happened to see it online at thesource.ca this morning so I ordered it. It's now sold out of stock online at that shop now.
@Meteoroid it is indeed! I have no idea where to put it to be honest . Got to make room somewhere on my shelves.
It’s the 4th special edition I bought for the switch, after Link’s Awakening, Fire Emblem Three Houses and Smash Brothers. I like them all . They’re all very nice to look at and I like to turn the pages of the booklets once in a while.
I consider them the new versions of former ‘manuals’.
I'm glad this comes with a standard case and a steelbook.
Was going to get it then i realised it would end up in the same place as Astral chain and 3 houses collectors edition. In a box under my bed. Didnt bother in the end and just got the standard edition.
@Iggy-Koopa well if you feel like passing it off in my direction I’d happily pay ya $50 for the extra content w/o game. Message me if that interests ya.
(I’m in the USA, if you’re in Europe probably not worth it for shipping costs)
Got the special edition as soon as gamestop opened
I was very surprised by its size when I had it delivered to me. I expected the box and book to be close in size (or a bit bigger) to the game case and steelbook.
@RobotReptile UK, sadly.
I've bought a digital version and got my pre-ordered Metroid Dread Special Edition today. My only gripe is that I haven't got E.M.M.I. and Samus Amiibo yet.
@Iggy-Koopa dang. Congrats on getting the special anyway 👌
It's the exact same size as FE 3 Houses LE, smaller than Atral Chains LE but bigger than Xenoblade DE.
They all look great on my shelf.
Im glad for anyone that's collecting these, but honestly, all these goodies and addons, are just crap aren't they? Not specifically here, but in general. Maybe I'm getting old, that's all.
Adore it. Only downsides for me are my (beautiful!) art cards have a curve to them, and the first two pages of the (beautiful!) artbook were partially stuck together, leaving a few white tear marks across those mostly black pages.
Game is amazing.
I noticed this on Amazon UK earlier today at RRP (sold by Amazon) so bought it. They’re still in stock too.
It’s not delivered until Monday and I may still cancel it. I’ve really gone off Special Editions and sold BotW and Mario Rabbids recently as they were just too big and full of tat. Didn’t realise this was so big which is putting me off now.
Those are some lovely little dust collectors. Not worth it and I’m trying to declutter as it is…
@Helloworld117 I'm with you mate, can't frikin find it anywhere in my country ☹️
I got the NA collector's edition since I live in Canada. Opened it up when I got home and it doesn't even include the regular game case like the EU one! Very disappointed in that exclusion.
@MetalMario The NA one doesn't.
I ended up saving $55 in taxes alone on trading my switch and such for the OLED, so I figured I'd throw the extra bucks on this thing. The book alone is worth it for me as it's got stuff from all the previous proper Metroid games, not just Dread. I wouldn't normally get the SE, but what the heck, if I am gonna blow $40 on a Special Edition, it may as well be Metroid. (Keep in mind I am Canadian, so that dollar figure is different for folks I'm sure).
Would have love to been able to get one. But damn this product sold out faster than NL can pump out another Switch OLED article.
I’m happy for those who got one. Enjoy
I'm not a fan of boxes within boxes. I do collect physical media and I'm a sucker for steelbooks, but I kind of hate it when they give you a steelbook and a regular case on a plastic tray inside a box inside another box. It just feels so flagrantly wasteful.
I wish there was an edition that was just the game in a steelbook. To me, that's the sweet spot. Feels special, but isn't extravagantly wasteful.
I don’t like the “big box” format Nintendo uses for these collector editions, not easy to display or store. I don’t know if I’ve just had bad luck, but ordering from Nintendo I always seem to get a beaten up delivery box and a product inside that already has shelf wear
I always think the loose steelbook is redundant. Why not put the game… in the steelbook ?
@Aurumonado
I have the sadness
I have to say I'm really disappointed by the special edition. I put in multiple preorders to make sure I got a copy on release at the outrageous price. The quality of all the contents, especially the art book, is really poor. The quality of the cover, paper and the curation is not great - the art book could have been something that celebrates the series but instead it looks like a cash in from Nintendo. This is the second time in a couple of years (after 3d All Stars) that I've felt ripped off by Nintendo and I definitely I won't be buying any special or limited edition games going forwards.
Kind of in shock nobody has mentioned the physical release of Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! today. I stood in line at Best Buy this morning to Pick up my pre-order of it.
@piecez The box for LRG Collector's Edition of Clannad is lethal. You could beat someone to death with that thing. It's twice as big as the normal Limited Edition games on Switch, lol. Cost me $220 on eBay and definitely worth it.
@Silly_G There are: Amazon UK still has them available for £79.99 w/free p+p. Fact.
We could all get one if the scalpers hadn't gotten a hold of all the pre-orders. The price is just going to go up and up. I gave up and just bought the standard version this morning.
Mine showed up yesterday! ...during the 30 minutes I left the house. Apparently they didn't decide to re-deliver today, too. Awwww.
I get why some people would not think this is worth it, which I think is the norm for all special editions. Most of the stuff included is tat, and the cards are a bit crap imo.
But the art book is glorious. Far better than expected. It was the reason I got it and I think it's fantastic! But I collect artbooks, especially those focussed on concept and development art. I just wish there was text explaining the images properly.
I have the big Zelda BOTW special edition box in my office. It gets comments, and I didn’t realize this SE would get a big box. If I could get it for regular price I might just do it, but no.
Maybe I can get just the box off someone? :/
