Holy *****, you really mean that. That is so misguided, I don't know, where to begin.
Black people aren't really black, you know. They are different shades of brown.
Gorillas can be found in shades of brown and grey to black and grey, depending on in which territories they live. Oh, and they usually don't wear ties, either.
Anyway, to make Donkey Kong appear brown instead of black has very likely been an artistic decision due to technical limitations. Take a look at the black background in the original arcade game!
You could still say that this could have been "corrected" with the more advanced capabilities of the SNES. But an all black character (and I don't mean POC, but a living thing almost completely painted in black) is still difficult to make recognizable and readable with details and animations due to a lack of contrast.
Aiming for an audience inside your own culture isn't inherently a bad thing. And often - and this is (or was) true for Japan - the culture can be so distinct, that it doesn't click with audiences from other countries. To assume general nationalistic or racist tendencies in their culture or whatever you think this tells you really is borderline racist as is the assumption that African people (of which not all are black btw) can't identify with characters that have a different skin color than their own.
You're really creating a problem here where there is none by making a stratospheric stretch. That's a little bit like me making the assumption that "Max_the_German" indicates nationalistic thinking in your person. Because why would you necessarily tell the world that you are German? And when your nationality is so important to you, are you aware that, as it was already pointed out, Germany has not many POC characters in their videogames or movies, either?
I don't really make these assumptions. I just make a comparison to what you said.
Also, you can't be proud of the nature or country you where born into, because you have no influence on that whatsoever. And what makes you believe African people are lacking self-confidence about themselfs or their culture?
Look, we're in the same boat here. But blaming people or whole cultures of whitewashing (I don't know if this term fits for Asians anyway) for no reason is - to put it in the words of Lindsey Ellis "why they (the republicans, racists, Trump-supporters etc.) win". Because we are too busy denouncing each other to hell for the smallest of (supposed) faults.
@SmaggTheSmug Okay, you clearly don't know what you are talking about. The reason the depiction of Nazis and their symbolism weren't allowed in videogames is because they aren't allowed in general. (the exception are works of art or with an educational value, which games are only slowly referred to in recent years). And that's not for erasing history, but to prevent Neo-Nazis and other idiots from re-using them for their own propaganda or to glorify the NS-regime. So it's quiet the opposite of what you wrote. In fact Germany as a society and the government are always pretty aware of the crimes of the Third Reich. You probably won't find a topic more documentaries are filmed or more history articles/books are written about in Germany. And as for the point of Germany ruining things for the rest of Europe: Tell that to the refugees. Still a lot of problems on the national and international front, but your view on the country seems pretty short-sighted, one-dimensional and undereducated.
Well, this score is no surprise, since "Samus Returns" got the same and that game hadn't seen nearly half the hype of "Metroid Dread".
I can't help, but to be very skeptical, though, because I found "Samus Returns" to be well crafted, but rather conventional, unimaginative, too pandering to the legacy of "Metroid Prime" and eventually too boring to finish it.
I will buy "Dread" nevertheless, because the "Metroid"-franchise is such a staple of my gaming life and I want to support it. And of course I still hope to really enjoy it.
I wish everybody, especially the ones, who are really hyped, that to them this is the game they've hoped for and that you all will have a great time with it.
Completely sucked up in the "Castlevania Advance Collection" and "Bloodstained - Ritual of the Night". The latter finally clicked with me and I enjoy it a lot, even in the Switch version. Strangely you have to crank up the brightness of the system to make out the graphical details. Seems obvious, but it's oddly different from any other game I've played on the Switch and also seems somewhat independent from the gamma configuration. Can't quite explain it. Anyway, fun game. There's no Metroidvania, than an actual Metroidvania. I also throw in "The Takeover" for more 2D-action-goodness I can't get enough of.
@andykara2003 Yeah, I absolutely agree. The mechanics where slightly more complex. But that really brings some extra depth to the racing. It's still rather simple and arcadey, that's why I don't get the complaints. But together with the impeccable feel of the game, the course design and brillant physics this makes for a perfectly tuned, thrilling racing experience.
As a huge fan of the Hong Kong-action-cinema of the 80s and 90s, this is a little bit of a dream game come true. Played the demo and it felt solid and promising enough to be excited for the final release. Very pleased it'll arrive soon.
My absolute favorite racing-game-series. Nothing compares to it. It will probably forever have a place in my all-time top 10.
It's an unpopular opinion, I guess, but I think I like the sequel a little bit better. Doesn't matter, though. They are almost equal and both amazing.
It breaks my heart that Nintendo seems to have abandoned the franchise ("1080 °", too), but I understand why. It appears they don't have enough mass market appeal.
At least, I hope licensing issues don't get in the way and we'll get "Wave Race 64" for NSO N64 with online-multiplayer eventually.
@Zach777 Isn't it? While it's sad, that even such a simple game in terms of graphics runs compromised on the Switch, it's still a 10/10 game in my eyes. For what it is, it's almost perfectly executed. One of the very few good games from Germany, I have to add.
@MetalMan Which kind of control option did you use? At first, I wasn't interested in the Game, because I thought you would always have to steer relative to the cyclers point of view, which would have melted my brain right off the start. But you can change it, so that you control the bike directly in any direction relative to the camera. Just in case you didn't know.
@Peterchu Thanks. But I think the flame thrower was a separate item, because he held it in his left hand. And I assume "going upwards" is not a freely usable item/ability, but restricted to certain points.
Cool. Hopefully they change the graphics drastically. "Ritual of the Night" looks really ugly, no matter the system. I'd like pixelart or something hand-drawn. The artstyle is also not the most inspired. The game could also go with less systems rather than more, like one would be tempted creating a sequel. And of course it will come to Switch.
@Splodge I didn't know that Japan never got the grey version of "Wario Land II". Interesting. Thank you. Anyway, that game is an underappreciated masterpiece, I have to say.
I'm sorry, but that infamous "lack of ideas"-excuse is just laughable and always makes me a little angry. And I'm not even a big "F-Zero" fan. ("Wave Race", baby!)
As many here pointed out, online-multiplayer is one major factor or that you just don't have to make it super innovative. This genre is fairly underrepresented and some types of games have been absent for such a long time, that they feel rather fresh again, nowadays. Look at "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 & 2" or the "Doom"-reboot.
What was the great idea for "New Super Bros. 2" or "Wii"? Collect a lot of coins and - surprise - multiplayer.
Also, when you're arrogant enough to state that you already created the peak of future racer design, how about re-releasing the old games then, Nintendo? Nobody owns a f'n GameCube anymore or is capable of connecting it to an HDTV, without risking eye cancer.
And when you can't find any new ideas, then you're not thinking hard enough about it.
I call ***** on all this.
There's only one reason, they won't make a new "F-Zero" and that's because they think that it won't sell. End of story.
@Absol Thank you. Hmm, I enjoy the design aspect, but I certainly would also like a greater emphasis on a life-simulation. Maybe an eventual successor will combine both.
@echoplex Do people really complain about lacking content in "New Horizons"? What kind of content is missing, that the older games have? Serious questions.
Maybe, this is a game send from heaven to just appeal to me and four other people on this planet, the way that it does. But for me, this game is nearly flawless.
It's "Trials" meets "Dirt Rally", but with mountain bikes and a heavy emphasis on exploration plus a good portion of chill. There's nothing quiet like it and it absolutely baffles me how this could have been executed so perfectly on first try.
Words can't describe how much this game hits every right note for me. I haven't loved a "racing" game this much, since "Wave Race 64/Blue Storm".
I'm insanely addicted to it. So, I'll probably play not much else.
@PhhhCough Rather specific selection of genres, in my eyes. Anyway, that's an interesting topic and you made me thinking, because I hate rogue-likes, too. As far as I can tell, I would say that maybe rogue-likes have the appearance of a let's call it "playthrough"-game, a game that has a beginning and an end, but are structurally more like a, let's call it a "versus"-game. In the former you want to make progress to someday just finish it. But in the latter the appeal is that every new attempt is short, but can be extremely different within it's specific set of rules and conditions. The goal is not to finish it ultimately, but to finish it repeatedly and fail repeatedly. So, rogue-likes often give you a certain end, you can look forward to, to feel that you played through it. But these games also don't want you to reach that end, because you're encouraged to try, fail and try again over and over and simply enjoy the attempt, which can frustrate many players, because they literally always start from the beginning, without seeing any progress.
While I agree with you to a certain degree (the AA-market for instance is so much smaller now, than it still was in the 2000s), I think you know that most of the time someone makes a statement like this he or she usually means the triple-A-branch of the videogame industry.
And that's a pretty legit complaint. I love Indie-games as much as the next guy and they are certainly a lot less corrupted by destructively greedy corporate influences, but they don't (and I would argue aren't able to) innovate or just cover every type of game.
And not everybody is fond of super stylized graphics.
But the AAA-industry focuses a lot on easy to advertise, but rather hollow PR-buzz-words and following money-making-trends which is the reason why you find so many insanely huge open-world-service-games and microtransactions whereever you turn your head.
And that seriously hurts the amount, the variety and ultimately the quality of what comes out of that branch.
Have to say, "Spirit - Riding free" may have nothing to do with the original film, but it's actually one of the better series for children, especially compared to total crap-fests like "Paw Patrol", which my children unfortunately are serious fans of. This game somewhat captures the (imo decent) art-style of the show, but irritatingly changes it to "more childish", which wouldn't be necessary at all.
@HamatoYoshi Haha, you definitely got me with the "die inside" cliché. That was also admittedly a little bit too rude for something that is probably a minor problem in the history of mankind. Point taken! Sorry! I stay with my point that this particular reference is overused, though. I saw it literally five minutes ago in the Switch Up-review for "Cyber Shadow", for example. Seems always a little bit tired to me. But then again, I've overreacted here. I just couldn't believe this was maybe the first time someone read that phrase regarding a ninja video game. But it's like spoilers for really old movies. It's always the first time for someone else.
Great feature. I only played "King of Fighters - Heat of Battle" ('96) and the non-Neo Geo, but technical similar GB Version of "Battle Arena Toshiden". The latter was very good, but "Kof-Hob" as my brother and I used to call it, was simply a miracle. Probably the best fighter on the system. I never knew a Game Boy "Fatal Fury" existed, which absolutely amazes me. I love it, when I make such discoveries about retro games through articles like this. Thank you.
@tourjeff I really, really like your avatar. Sadly, that reminds me, that Nintendo will probably never announce a new "Wave Race" in any of these Directs, ever.
I'm playing "Donkey Kong Country 2" and "Tropical Freeze" back to back, because for me the "DKC"-series is just inextricably connected to Christmas, ever since I got "Donkey Kong Land 2" as a twelve-year-old on Christmas eve. And "Tropical Freeze" is still the best platformer ever made, while "2" being my favorite in terms of atmosphere and soundtrack.
Also, I bought a bunch of games at the latest eShop-Sale, including "Hades", "River City Girls", "Phoenotopia: Awakening", "Battle Chasers - Nightwar" and "Blazing Chrome" and got "The Ninja Saviors" as a present. So, plenty of awesome stuff that will rotate in my Switch Lite, once I get out of the kitchen. ^^
What a coincidence: Just today I again stumbled across a recommendation for "Initial D" and did some research about that anime, where I can watch it and which games scratch that drift-itch. And only because of that, I get the references in this news, I wouldn't have understand (understood?) yesterday.
@Stocksy I second this. In my opinion, every videogame remake or remaster should always contain the option to just play the original, like the "Monkey Island"-special editions or the "Halo" remake did it.
And I'm also always in for complete collections of game series. Luckily we already got some good stuff this generation.
@Auenegheps True story. Nintendo used to have some of the best D-Pads. Then I tried this with "Street Fighter" and was appelled by how imprecise it is. Because of this and the directional buttons not being a much better alternative some genres, especially fighting games, are practically unplayable on the Switch, unless you have an arcade stick. But try to put that in your pocket. Hope this revision of the Pro Controller fixes this issue.
When I remember correctly, they do have an alternating multiplayer, like "Super Mario World". "Returns" was the first in the series with "real" coop. Otherwise, they're of course an absolute must.
@andykara2003 No, you're not. Although, I have to say, I think, I like both games nearly equally. But still, I don't get the somewhat negative reception of Blue Storm.
Cool stuff and thank you for making me feel old. Nice to see King of Fighters and Battle Arena Toshinden in the pictures above. I loved fighting games back in the day, but only had a Game Boy. So I had to stick with a few good ports. Especially King of Fighters - Heat of Battle was a brilliant portable version of KoF '96. AND you actually could play the two-player-mode on one screen using the Super Game Boy.
Wave Race all over my face! 1080° next, please! A third new Donkey Kong Country (I know, it's probably not gonna happen. But Tropical Freeze is a freakin' masterpiece. I want more.) A really brave new Super Mario title, similar to the radical change Super Mario World took from the first one to Yoshi's Island. Pilotwings, without Miis (They should die horribly anyway.) 2D Metroid A triple-A Fire Emblem Wario Land, like 2 and 3, of course. An actual good new StarFox. (It's possible Nintendo.)

Re: "Master The Art Of Drifting" When Absolute Drift Speeds Onto Switch This December
What a coincidence: Just today I again stumbled across a recommendation for "Initial D" and did some research about that anime, where I can watch it and which games scratch that drift-itch. And only because of that, I get the references in this news, I wouldn't have understand (understood?) yesterday.
Re: Wallachia: Reign Of Dracula Might Be The Closest We Get To A New Castlevania On Switch
@Zuljaras Sounds good. Are you actually making a game right now? If so, what kind of game?
Re: M2 Is Bringing Aleste Collection To Nintendo Switch
Very cool, indeed. And seems that there likely could be a second collection with the SNES and Mega Drive games.
Re: We're Getting A New Pocky & Rocky Game On Nintendo Switch
@Stocksy I second this. In my opinion, every videogame remake or remaster should always contain the option to just play the original, like the "Monkey Island"-special editions or the "Halo" remake did it.
And I'm also always in for complete collections of game series. Luckily we already got some good stuff this generation.

Re: Rumour: The Major Switch Title This Holiday Season Could Have "Tires" In It
I would prefer it when it has jet skis in it.
Re: A Revised Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Has Been Spotted In Stores
@Auenegheps True story. Nintendo used to have some of the best D-Pads. Then I tried this with "Street Fighter" and was appelled by how imprecise it is. Because of this and the directional buttons not being a much better alternative some genres, especially fighting games, are practically unplayable on the Switch, unless you have an arcade stick. But try to put that in your pocket.
Hope this revision of the Pro Controller fixes this issue.
Re: Feature: Super Nintendo Games We’d Like To See On Nintendo Switch Online
@ALinkttPresent
When I remember correctly, they do have an alternating multiplayer, like "Super Mario World". "Returns" was the first in the series with "real" coop. Otherwise, they're of course an absolute must.
Re: A Spiritual Successor To 1080° Snowboarding Might Be In The Pipeline
@andykara2003 No, you're not. Although, I have to say, I think, I like both games nearly equally. But still, I don't get the somewhat negative reception of Blue Storm.
Re: Get Some Nostalgia Feels From These Super Game Boy Borders
Cool stuff and thank you for making me feel old. Nice to see King of Fighters and Battle Arena Toshinden in the pictures above. I loved fighting games back in the day, but only had a Game Boy. So I had to stick with a few good ports. Especially King of Fighters - Heat of Battle was a brilliant portable version of KoF '96. AND you actually could play the two-player-mode on one screen using the Super Game Boy.
Re: Feature: Five Franchises That Deserve A Fresh Chance on the Nintendo NX
Wave Race all over my face!
1080° next, please!
A third new Donkey Kong Country (I know, it's probably not gonna happen. But Tropical Freeze is a freakin' masterpiece. I want more.)
A really brave new Super Mario title, similar to the radical change Super Mario World took from the first one to Yoshi's Island.
Pilotwings, without Miis (They should die horribly anyway.)
2D Metroid
A triple-A Fire Emblem
Wario Land, like 2 and 3, of course.
An actual good new StarFox. (It's possible Nintendo.)
