While Animal Crossing still feels like a relatively new Nintendo franchise, today actually marks its 20th anniversary.
Yes, the series started out in Japan on 14th April 2001 as a Nintendo 64 title. While Dōbutsu no Mori (otherwise known as Animal Forest) was never released in its original form here in the west, the life simulation eventually got an enhanced local release on the GameCube in 2002 (Dōbutsu no Mori+). The US release followed with a European release in 2004.
To celebrate this milestone, the official game account has today shared some special artwork and the following message:
"It has been 20 years since the "Animal Crossing" series was born. Thank you to everyone who enjoyed it. We look forward to working with you in the future."
Since the original game's release, Animal Crossing has gone to become one of Nintendo's major franchises. The characters Isabelle and Villager have even been added to the Super Smash Bros. series. Along with this, there's been a mobile game, amiibo, an animated film and much more.
The latest entry Animal Crossing: New Horizons has shifted more than 30 million units in less than a year and has also received a stack of free updates. It seems this franchise is now doing better than ever!

I don't play Old Animal Crossing games (Original, Wild World, City Folk).
They are too archaic and punishing for me.
I played New Leaf and New Horizons for more building sims aspect and less yada yada yada.
I'm not old! You're old!
Man, I first started this series with City Folk. I enjoyed that game but what really got me hooked was New Leaf.
Wild World was my first one. Played it to death.
This is the only game series I can say that I started with the original
Played first on Gamecube, but I have a lot of memories of Wild World and New Leaf too.
@Anti-Matter Yeah, those original Animal Crossing games really built up a reputation for being as hard as Dark Souls.
Nice. Maybe in another 20 years they’ll add the ability to turn off the music and make it so my guy doesn’t yell like a chipmunk every time I catch a fish or a bug or find something cool or dig something up or get a present etc etc. Then I would REALLY celebrate.
I joined the series with Wild World, but I remember preferring City Folk on the Wii, mainly because the graphics were prettier, and it actually had holidays. What really gripped me was New Leaf, which I'm still pretty fond of.
New Horizons is a big disappointment, and while it offers some ideas that I like, it mostly just feels like it focuses too much on the design aspect, alienating people like me, who in which play for the life sim aspect.
Hopefully the next game will be better, but I'm not holding my breath.
As someone who is cursed to forever be associated with this series because of my username, I should find an excuse to play the original game again. Probably next year, since we only got it 19 years ago.
Been in it since the first one.
I wonder how much outrage there would be if nintendo celebrated Animal Crossings anniversary when everyone was expecting something for Zelda 😂
The only reason. I played Animal Crossing was for the NES games you could get in it.
I'm old! I've been playing AC since the game cube. I even played pocket camp right until they started that monthly subscription thing.
I started with the localized version released on the GameCube. I remember being charmed by this 'life simulator' at the time. And, yeah, the inclusion of some NES games really charmed me!
I started with Wild World and played every main line game since, even going back to the GameCube one. I wonder if they'll have an item or in game event for New Horizons to celebrate the anniversary...
I only played the original on GameCube and New Horizons. I kind of regret that everyone is nice in NH, I loved the (somewhat insulting) bitter remarks the villagers could say in the original game. But even though everyone is complaining about NH's lack of content I've still played it daily to this day.
I've added in a poll, so please vote!
I started with New Leaf, got bored with it. New Horizons was my first serious time sink into Animal Crossing.
@echoplex Do people really complain about lacking content in "New Horizons"? What kind of content is missing, that the older games have? Serious questions.
@Migoshuro I heard about a certain café, some dialogues, items or festivals that "have yet to return" in NH. But as I only played the GC game I wouldn't know!
the Animal Crossing games i played was the original on the Game Cube, New Leaf(with 400h) and New Horizons(with 560h).
I had the Gamecube version and played every day for a bout 3 weeks. The next version I got was ACNH, and have played every day for over a year.
Started on Wild World and played everyone since, love the latest one because it adds the terra forming and island decoration.
Put in 1100 hours up to now.
Really remember getting the GC one when it was released in 2004 in the EU.. 'that mysterious japanese cult hit''... no youtube yet,,
@echoplex Thanks for your reply. Now, I want that Café on my island. ^^
@Migoshuro imo NH is characterised more as a farming/harvest sim than a life sim e.g. there is greater emphasis on constructing items than fellow islander personalities. People who like to design things seemed to have responded really well to the game but I don't enjoy terraforming as much as I would enjoy different relationship challenges and a greater variety of 'life' aspects beyond catching thousands of sea bass.
@Absol Thank you. Hmm, I enjoy the design aspect, but I certainly would also like a greater emphasis on a life-simulation. Maybe an eventual successor will combine both.
I'm really sorry if Amiibo Festival was your first AC experience.
@PessitheMystic why, because you disliked it? I bet there were some people who liked the game.
But as for me, I started with the Gamecube one. Good times.
@Ulanda because it was pretty much universally panned and isn’t a true representation of the series. Is that justification enough for you?
@PessitheMystic I don't care what others think about something, I go my own way. And I know at least 3 to 4 People, who had fin with that game, including me.
The first one I played was Wild World but I lost interest pretty quickly. Then I played New Leaf and once again lost interest rather quickly. I'm still playing New Horizons a year after launch. Imo terraforming is the one thing the series was lacking for me previously. It's a gamechanger.
Noooooo, stop making me feel old!!!!!! I was 15. . . 😓
I first played the Gamecube original when it was released and I had not played another entry until New Horizons came along last year.
Wildworld on the ds was me and my sister first, i got it for my birthday and absolutely loved it, i remember waking up early on a saturday morning to watch cartoons on tv and switch on my ds to take part in the flea market in animal crossing.
Population Growing - still the best...by far!
So funny, weird, even dark at times. The ton layout is interesting and so relaxing. the music -easily one of the best soundtracks for a game, ever.
The NES games... WOW! Nintendo of today would never allow this!
Yes, quality of life issues would be welcome for a remaster release -very much so for smoother, quicker menu play, but the slowness of it is actually the pjt of it... to slow down, and be in those moments of clicking, typing etc..
Great and important series, and I love them all.
new Horizon way too homogenized... they have lost any ad ALL edge. I hope some of that can return in a New Lead style mid-life update.
Wild World memories ! Everything about playing on Wifi with the DS blew my mind as a kid.
Wild World will always have a special place in my heart... and after all these years, several games later, I still haven’t fully paid any of my home loans ^_^”
My first Animal Crossing was Wild World, but it didn't really grab me, and I stopped playing after six-months. New Leaf is where I really got hooked, and at over 500-hours, it was my most played game on the 3DS. Now I'm playing New Horizons, and it will easily eclipse my New Leaf play time.
Even if I started my adventure with New Leaf, it sure was a great experience. Playing with friends on Tortimer's island was the funniest thing in the universe. What do I miss the most? My town. I put so much effort to it... to then just switch to New Horizons, to never see again all my hard work. It's sad to admit, but if I try to play it now, it just feels kinda obsolete. I'm so sad about that.
Maybe we'll get an anniversary event in New Horizons?
it's crazy to think that a game like this would be popular years later and had 4 more games in the series.
The Original Game will always be my favorite out of the 5. even if it lacks features that the other 4 added on to.
I started and ended with AC on the Gamecube. I loved how bizarre and different it was - there was nothing else even remotely like it around - but I never really fell in love with it. The real-time schedule and the fact that I only knew one other person who had a Gamecube (and they didn't buy AC) made it feel a bit empty and lonely. It's so much more of a social experience now, but now I have a bazillion other games to play. I've bought New Leaf and New Horizons for my kids, but I don't feel like I have to play them myself.
Still, massive respect for being such an original property and succeeding commercially despite its quirkiness. I still have very fond memories of discovering AC's weird litle secrets and hearing KK Slider play for the first time.
@PessitheMystic
"I'm really sorry if Amiibo Festival was your first AC experience."
Surprisingly, i'm quite addictive with Amiibo Festival. I have some Animal Crossing figurines so everytime i play Amiibo Festival, i pick 4 different figurines, play until 4 players all controlled by me so there is no competition since i want to level up all my figurines to unlock their alternative costumes and more emotions.

@Anti-Matter sounds like a right good time. I didn’t think it was necessary or even possible to grind in that game, but there we have it.
I got New Leaf when it came out and was still playing it up until I got my copy of New Horizons. It still hop onto ACNL when I miss Brewster and Kapp'n. Man I wish those guys were in New Horizons
I own amiibo Festival! I mean, its a (not) rare game and all, but I don't wanna die and be known as the guy who owned amiibo Festival! -Scott the Woz kinda
