Tribute Games has confirmed that Steel Assault, a retro-style arcade platformer, will be blasting onto Switch at the end of the month.
Developed by Zenovia Interactive, Steel Assault is described as "a fast-paced, action-packed, 2D platformer" which will have you punching and ziplining your way through a post-apocalyptic America. Just another typical Saturday night for us, then.
Interestingly, the whole thing's been tailored with CRT gaming in mind, with a 4:3 screen resolution and optional arcade bezels being a major part of the aesthetic. Channelling that '90s feel even further is a "retro hard" mode that sounds like it'll be a real challenge – thankfully other difficulty options are available to tone things down if need be.

Here's a feature list:
- Fast-paced 2D platforming: Dynamic, fluid sidescrolling combat with a stylish moveset and tons of enemies / bosses to fight
- 16-bit post-apoc style: A beautifully fleshed-out sci-fi world, rendered in detailed pixel art and backed by fiery FM-synthesized tunes
- Unique zipline action: A new twist on classic grappling-hook mechanics, opening up fun movement possibilities
- Classic gaming experience: Beautifully hand-crafted stage-based action with optimal screen resolution for CRT gaming
Steel Assault launches on 28th September for $14.99. Will you be giving this one a go?

I’m getting Huntdown vibes from the trailer and that was my favourite sleeper hit of 2020. Will keep an eye on this.
"a "retro hard" mode that sounds like it'll be a real challenge"
Thanks but no thanks
"other difficulty options are available"
Count me in!
Don't care about the "retro hard" mode, but I didn't know about this game, and looks really good!
I really hope there's a way to disable that awful CRT filter. It's a huge disservice to an otherwise great pixel art.
Love Tribute Games! still waiting for a sale on Panzer Paladin... hopefully that gets a price drop when this comes out.
I love pixelart a lot, but: I had to check youtube settings because I tought I'm at 360p.
Why is this game blurred in a bad way???
Wow, out of nowhere....this game looks like awesome old school action fun.
Will definitely keep this one on my radar
Played the demo via the Steam festival and it was super fun. I'm really hyped for the final game and glad it's finally out, soon.
@Figo so its a crt filter done not-so rigth (in my eyes atleast)
Did I just see a Contra Hard Corps invincible slide move? Because if I did, I’m sold!
Day one buy for sure.
Reporter: "What is your prediction for the fight?"
Mr. T: "My prediction?"
Reporter: "Yes, your prediction."
Mr. T: "Pain!"
Definitely the kinda game I pick up immediately.
Is it 4:3 only? Because, if it is… I just can’t. It’s a waste of my 75” screen real estate
This here... Whoa, outta nowhere. My kinda game. It's in the vein of Huntdown and Contra from what I see, and I love it. Wishlisting this asap.
Getting Contra vibes, love the look of this. Gorgeous pixel art I'm sold!!!
I want this right now!!!
Gorgeous looking game, but if it's too difficult I just don't have time for that kind of game anymore. Ori is gorgeous, Hollow Knight is gorgeous, but I can't play 'em cuz I'm too busy for a game that requires me to bang my head against the wall for hours at a time.
Glad I saw this article. Not only does the game look good, but I recognized it from the first screenshot with the red building and blue background as a game I was trying to remember the name of. I remember seeing it years ago when it had a Kickstarter as an 8-bit, NES-style game, but they decided to upgrade the graphics. That was the last bit of news I remembered abut the game, and could never remember the name of it. It looked really good in its 8-bit incarnation too.
@Bizzyb you sure do sound like the developers of the game just sent you a ton of merch
The odds are that this game is nothing special. Nintendo Life has done this many times. They hype up a game and then fail to even review it when it launches. Then for us consumers it will become backlogged and forgotten. Meanwhile that equates to another twenty bucks down the drain for each of us. Nintendo Life, do us a favor and review this one. If you give it less than a score of seven, remove this article from the world wide web. It is basically an advertisement for the game. It makes me wonder who pays for these kind of articles to be made. This is not to say that there is not a chance for this game to be great especially considering that tribute games has released a couple of stone cold modern classics. Take Flinthook for example. It is one of my all time favorite roguelites. Lets face it though, the "run n gun" genre, at this point in time, is a tough marketplace. For anyone who keeps up on modern two dimensional gaming, I should not have to explain why. There needs to be an evolution of this particular genre. Even if this game is as good as Blazing Chrome and Valfaris combined, it may still not constitute a requisite purchase for many collectors. Games of this genre, at this point in time, also have to compete with the Contra collection. Besides that, they need to blaze new ground to make themselves worthwhile to play. Hypothetically there are many ways for a game of this genre to do that. One is to fit into a sub genre of some type, like the "roguelite"/ "run n gun" sub genre for instance. In summary, in the name of Corona and for gaming's sake, Nintendo Life, regardless of whether this title is good or bad, please review it. I can not stand when you release an article advertising a game like this, and then never release a review. Does anyone remember a game called Tigger Witch? A few months ago Nintendo Life released several articles praising it to high heaven before it's release. Then when it released they failed to review it. That was no surprise! I smelled a lemon from the moment I glanced Trigger Witch's first screenshots, and playing through the demo on my X Box one X confirmed my citrus suspicions. The game was a gigantic reeking pile of hot, sticky, eternally living dog feces. I still remember the smell. Yet, there were a handful of gaming websites and YouTube channels spouting praise for the game. All of this made me wonder what sort of petty indie developer politics were taking place behind the scenes. In my mind, when Nintendo Life promotes a game and then does not review it, it should be considered common sense for anyone who read about the game to assume that Nintendo Life backed out of reviewing it as a result of it not being up to snuff. Or am I deluding myself? Tell me fellow gamers, what am I? Am I a drunken conspiracy theorist, sitting next to Norm in Cheers and slowly digging myself an existential grave which I will never crawl out of, or am I on to something?
@Retrogamindaddy 😂 Nah I just really like old school games like this. It's my nostalgia in overdrive
