Late last week, a financial report from Digital Bros. - the parent company of Bloodstained publisher 505 games - made reference to a second version of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.
It came a bit of surprise to fans of Koji Igarashi, as nothing had been officially announced yet. Now, in an update on social media, the Bloodstained Twitter account has acknowledged recent reports - confirming 505 Games and ArtPlay are indeed working on a sequel.
Right now, it's in the early stages and the plan is to first see out the development of the original game:
Although Bloodstained had a successful Kickstarter campaign, it was filled with bugs, glitches and performance issues on release. Fortunately, the developers have slowly improved the game over time with multiple quality of life and content updates.
There's no information about what platforms the sequel will be released on just yet, so keep an eye out for a Switch announcement in the future. Would you be interested in a sequel to Bloodstained? What did you think of the original game? Leave a comment down below.

Hopefully they don't screw up the switch port this time
Yeah it is probably not gonna come to switch.
At least give curse of the moon 3 or something
Having recently finished the switch version. It's fine... at least in this point. I don't know how bad it was at launch.
It's a good game.
@anoyonmus Pretty sure the switch version sold the most copies, would be dumb to exclude it.
I haven't even touched mine yet. That's how disappointing the Switch launch was considering I also backed this.
Played it a bit on my bro's Steam account though. It's good but I would have preferred a nice experience on Switch.
Day 1. 🙂 Personally got the first for PS4 and freakin loved it.
@Jasonmd Exactly. It would be an awful decision to exclude the Switch
@anoyonmus @iLikeUrAttitude As far as I'm aware, the Switch port took them completely by surprise with how well it sold. More than on PS4, at least. There's no way they're not optimizing for the Switch version from the start this time.
I played the first one on Switch a few months ago and I loved it. A true spiritual successor to Iga's Castlevania games. I will definitely be there for the sequel, whenever it comes out.
That is good I just hope it is better than the first one. It was ok for a game but it was lacking the charm of the other IGA games.
WOOOOHOOOO! Played bloodstained ritual of the night 3 times en curse of the moon 2 times. NOW BRING ME ANOTHER BLOODSTAINED (visualize the baby eating smurfs here).
Still waiting on the local coop multiplayer from waaaaaaaay back when it was a Kickstarter. It was maybe a bit naïve but I thought the original 2 year-ish delay on releasing it was to put in all the stretch goals.
Great game but the Switch port plays worse than the iOS port... Hopefully the sequel will be optimized at 60 fps for Switch
Kek. Will get, loved the first one. Beat it 4 times
@fafonio Yeah it really sucked at launch
These types of games are great in handheld and on TV, so hopefully this time around it will be optimized for Switch (or Switch Pro.) If not then I'll just buy it on Playstation again.
Cool. Hopefully they change the graphics drastically. "Ritual of the Night" looks really ugly, no matter the system. I'd like pixelart or something hand-drawn. The artstyle is also not the most inspired.
The game could also go with less systems rather than more, like one would be tempted creating a sequel.
And of course it will come to Switch.
Just plan a little more thoroughly for the Switch version please.
I need to get back to this. I got sidetracked playing other stuff but what i played of the original seemed great.
I just hope the sequel doesn't have the constant delays, development issues and shoddy performance at launch. Don't release it until it's finished and running like it's supposed to.
Can we please, for the love of god, at least have someone to reign in Iga's worse tendencies? I desperately want to enjoy soul system gameplay, but I just can't stand when Iga forces you to pause and switch out souls just so that you can get past 1 obstacle, only for you to have to re-pause and switch back just so that you can actually use all of your attacks. Getting a decent map would also be nice, but I honestly can't even hope for that anymore, since all of the Igavania games (other than CotM) have at best slightly terrible map designs.
So it's about a month off release then?
Wasn't filled with bugs at all. You must have played the wrong version while everyone else just decided to enjoy the game the best they could, by playing the versions that WERE optimized.
@Thirteen1355 slowed to an almost-halt on final boss...3 times...and that's one example. I got over other slowdowns but final boss was so uneventful to due glitches
So it will be on the Switch successor.
Love the "metroid" Castlevania games and I loved playing Bloodstained on my Switch
I'm glad they are making more
Played it on PS4. I'd say it's one in my top 15 for that console. Definitely looking forward to the sequel.
Original wasn't amazing, but I think they fixed it up enough to be in a respectable state. I fully expect this one to be fantastic tho, now that they've got a lot more of their development process figured out.
Nice I'll definitely check out the sequel.
This game was amazing and will buy the sequel on day one. People love to bitch about this game and the switch port, but glad it didn't discourage the devs to want to make another.
@Ralizah Yeah, the only reason there wouldn't be a Switch port would probably be due to the follow up releasing in the meantime.
Woo, I can't wait for this. I wanted a platformer and was hesitant about it given it is... somewhat visually strange, but it was a great experience and the weird look grows on you. Absolutely getting this day 1, though probably on Steam so hopefully they do concurrent releases.
@iLikeUrAttitude blame the dev 505 they made horrible excuses on the switch version by delaying and doing nothing to polish it up because they rater focus on the other console version then the switch just hope iga chews their butts off not screwing the sequel up for switch this time around
It runs bad on switch so no point on buying a sequel if it runs really bad
I backed the Kickstarter and was somewhat enthusiastic about the project, but they lost me before they released the game because of how they treated backers. They couldn't be bothered to deliver some promises that were made on day one of the campaign and not one of their stretch goals, of which there were too many. 505's PR guy for the Kickstarter lied directly to me when I tried to take them up on their "remedy" to my issue. Let's not forget they lied about performance, which I knew was a lie at the time, when they showed off the Switch version prior to release. I was lucky as I was able to get my money out of the project through some good game planning and a bit of coincidence, but not at all thanks to 505. I'll be avoiding them and Iga going forward. I'll stick to Iga's old games when I need my fix of that kind of game.
Having preordered the physical release and played the vanilla sans any major updates (besides the day 1 patch) I think it was fine. I enjoyed myself. I then looked at the other versions and cried a little. The second game will probably on a beefer Pro version or maybe a completely new system so here's hoping it works well!
Well, I'm sure they learned their lesson as far as releasing again on Switch so I'm confident there. What I'd like to see is them ditch polygons for a more sprite-based look and flow like Iga's GBA Castlevanias, but that's just my opinion.
Still have to finish the PC version with the good ending, I do hope they refine their formula in the next game because the first one was quite a great game.
If I would lump it in with the Igavanias I would def put it on par with portrait of ruin below the sorrow games, Order of Eclesia and Sotn.
(I also think Aria is an overall better experience than Sotn but without that game Aria would not exists)
The first one was very enjoyable, though there was ‘something’ missing for me that held it back from greatness. I still replay other metroidvanias quite often but not bloodstained. Not sure why!
Hoping the next game improves and iterates and finds that extra little magic
I would need to see a review, and confirmation that the game is in a playable state before buying this. After what happened with the first one, I can't trust the developers to release a game that works. I also blame Nintendo, who need to revise their refund policy.
So the next hype-train rolling for a game where the 1st part is bugged, not running well and has awful loading times. I don't get it.
I'm now taking wagers on which comes out first, this game or BOTW2?
Hopefully this one won't be infested with glitches and slowdown when it releases.
Maybe we can finally have the rogue like mode promised in the first ones kickstarter.
Sweet! Maybe work out some of those bugs and crashes beforehand as much as possible please. Looking forward to it
@anoyonmus Why wouldn't it?
@alexybubble When you've got that many souls, you need a menu to customize what you want. That's not a bad tendency, its simply a feature, and its not even a clunky menu. Geeze.
@Tempestryke I'm fine with a menu to customize souls, I just want all of the REQUIRED souls to be permanently active. From what I remember, the hand, the light zip, and the water jet were all bound to the same type of soul, which also had different, offensive souls attached to it, and all 3 were required to access new areas. I just find that to be unnecessarily clunky, especially when they made a unique button combo activate the gravity flip. Why couldn't they have done the same for the 3 previously mentioned upgrades, allowing for you to actually have a full arsenal at any time, rather than having to constantly switch back and forth between your traversal soul and attack soul? I'm fine with concept of a trade off between attack power and traversal, but the only game in the franchise that did that well was Circle of the Moon, probably because you could go through the entire game without collecting a single one of its proto-souls, so they couldn't design anything that required the stone whip, which was ultimately for the better, and is one of the main reasons why I vouch for Iga to be restrained a bit.
@Jasonmd true but they could butcher the port.
Also if this is coming for 2022 or 2023 then it’s not coming to switch probably
@Ralizah it’s better if they left out the switch. I don’t want a botched port at launch and then get patched up later on. Ruins the game.
@iLikeUrAttitude how about no switch port?
I think after what we have seen with the first game and games like Colors Ultimate, I feel it is better to leave the switch out
@Kochambra is it finally good on Switch?
@anoyonmus It's very enjoyable on Switch.
When I played it, they only technical issues I remember are a noticeable FPS drop in a very specific area, and a few instances when the game freezed for few seconds. If I remember correctly, they released at least one additional patch after my playthrough, so the second issue may have been fixed.
If you play it on Switch after playing it on more powerful consoles or PC, it may look too downgraded, but taken on its on terms, the Switch port is a perfectly fine way to experience this excellent game, IMHO.
