Re: Introducing Koco, A Cute New Character Appearing In Sonic Frontiers

Matroska

@Dinglehopper @Bunkerneath @Ara Google "kodama". It's a Mononoke kodama head without a body. You should also see other kodama pics that show the inspiration for the koroks. This "Nintendo invented everything" mentality is bizarre. They didn't even create things like Birdo or Shy Guys, let alone ancient Japanese spirits.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 3's World Is 'Five Times Larger' Than Predecessor's, Says Monolith Soft

Matroska

I've been playing for a few days and am now partway through chapter 3. I love it but the weakest part is how plain the world is. None of the charm of 1 and 2. No atmosphere or character. It's not fun to navigate, each area is basically a massive room with enemies in, that funnnels you eventually to the next area.

Hopefully it gets better as it goes on because XC2 in particular had a really enchanting and memorable world.

Re: British Gas Advises Consumers To Turn Off Games Consoles To Save Money

Matroska

@OrtadragoonX it's more like $7 or so. But he's making that up for some reason. Electricity bills have a daily basic charge even if you use nothing. For me it's 20p, that's fairly standard. So that means even if you used zero electricity your bill would be about £6 a month.

I live alone and an careful with what I use and just gaming on the PS5 for a few hours would more than double that. Then you've got your fridge, kettle, microwave, lights, shower, hot water, etc. You'd have to sit in the dark with nothing on, never cook (if elec powered), shower, have hot running water (if elec powered), never game or watch TV, no washing machine... for it to be anywhere near £6 a month.

For reference, the average UK electricity bill is £58 a month. That's $72.75. Bear in mind people don't tend to have air conditioning or use tumble dryers here, and they're two major costs. Also does heating tend to be gas or elec based in the US? Here most use gas powered things for heating.

Re: Nintendo's Switch Exclusive Metroid Dread Is Already Being Emulated On PC

Matroska

I don't think the article writer understands what an emulator is. It's not a crazy hack that magically ports games over, it's basically the original hardware being, well, emulated on another device. Yes, when the emulator is in early development stages you can get incompatibility but typically games work on it like they do on the original hardware.

It was the same with the Wii, even more so since it was basically just a GameCube so Dolphin could emulate it too.

Re: The First Switch OLED Comparison Video Has Surfaced

Matroska

The fact you can't hack it and therefore can't overclock it to get better performance, or install mods for games like BotW, means the improvement to the screen isn't worth it. Also, AFAIK, it's OLED but not HDR which means it could display more colours but isn't being sent more colours. It's like a 1080p display for a thing that can only do 720p.

Re: Talking Point: Remember When People Thought Switch Would Fail?

Matroska

I love my Switch but this seems like an odd article. You might as well write one titled "Remember when Nintendo fans thought the Wii U would succeed?" Nintendo's console sales went down each generation from the NES onwards, reaching an embarrassingly low point with the GC. Then they had a turnabout with the Wii, managing to pull out of a sales nosedive before hitting the ground, before following up with another massive flop. It's really not surprising that anyone had doubts about what they did next.

It seems the core thing is combining audiences, thus sales figures, of their handheld markets and home console markets. Clearly they're two separate things if you look at sales figures for the GC and GBA, the latter outselling the former by tens of millions. Combine them together, though...

Re: These New Sega Charging Mats Let You Wirelessly Charge Your Phone In Style

Matroska

@Expa0 Surprisingly, it's actually a really old idea that's been worked on for nearly 200 years. You've probably heard of and seen Tesla coils, they were a basic version of it but they just openly beamed electricity through the air in potentially fatal ways. Wireless energy was also shown at the World Fair in 1930s. During World War 2, scientists worked on doing it with microwaves. It's just that it's only recently that it's become practical for personal use.

Re: Review: Kitaria Fables - A Delightfully Cute, Fantasy Life-Style RPG Adventure

Matroska

It also runs at what reels like 20fps. As soon as I started playing it hit me, and the area was pretty basic with no other characters in. It feels like the Switch version is a bit of an afterthought. Looking at the PC recommended specs, they're modest but still perhaps beyond what the Switch has to offer and it seems like the devs didn't optimise it well for the platform (see also: the text size issue you mentioned).

Re: UK Retailer Currys Had A Metroid Dread Deal That Was Too Good To Be True

Matroska

@Scapetti You can get it for £42 anyway if you go to the right sites, like Simply Games in this case. Okay, well £42.85...

https://www.simplygames.com/p/metroid-dread-nintendo-switch

You really never have to pay RRP for any games if you just shop around.

Edit: Another good site, though in this case it's 10p more expensive than Simply Games.

I also recommend Shopto. They have the same price for Metroid Dread as Simply Games.

Re: New Kemco Sale Discounts Ten RPGs Across Switch And 3DS

Matroska

@Joriss They're cheap little mobile phone games with an RPG Maker feel. They're okay if you've played literally every other "proper" JRPG. I'd play them ages ago when I had an iPhone 4S (yeah, that long ago) and was going through a mobile phone gaming phase. Back when there was hope that mobile gaming would actually be good and not just billions of freemium gacha turds.

Re: Nintendo Switch System Update 13.0.0 Is Now Live

Matroska

@RandomNerds They'll never do that. Nintendo operate by cutting as many corners as possible to minimise costs, then overcharge for what they do have. If you hack your Switch you can have themes and UI changes. Random guys on the internet can make this modification while Nintendo pretend it's complex.
