It's an incredibly busy week for the Switch with the release of titles like Fall Guys, Roller Champions and Sonic Origins. Alongside all of these games we've also got the first-party title Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.
This is another spectacular Musou game by the team at Omega Force that sees you (the player) take control of the brand new character Shez, as they prepare to face off against the Three Houses protagonist Byleth. From here you join forces with Edelgard, Dimitri and Claude and are invited to set off on an all-new adventure.
In our own review, we noted how the game has improved upon its 2017 predecessor in several ways, and also featured some solid performance and an action-packed campaign - awarding it nine out of ten stars.
And here's a round-up of what other outlets have said about the game so far. GamesRadar+ (mostly) loved it, awarding it 3.5 out of 5:
"Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes rides a great hybrid battle system while barely slowing down for its beloved characters."
Vooks.net praised the game for its flawless fusion of gameplay and strategy - giving it 4.5 out of 5:
"Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes may just be the best Warriors game to date. It’s an utterly flawless fusion of fast-paced hack-and-slash gameplay with methodical, considered strategising, with a returning cast that is as vibrant as its ever been. With a cast as big as it is, it’s not surprising that a lot of characters come off feeling similar in combat, but that’s easy to look past with how fantastic every other aspect of it is."
Nintendo Insider gave the game 9 out of 10, noting how it was an "exceptional standout" among the many Warriors games on Switch:
"Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes brazenly leaps headlong into battle, delivering tactical brilliance and heroic thrills in equal measure. This is an exceptional standout among the many Warriors games on Nintendo Switch, and perhaps the best to grace the portable home console up until this point – laden with armies to slaughter, heartfelt storytelling and more than enough content to keep you occupied for months on end whether at home or on the move."
Comicbook.com said it was "closer to perfection than it has any right to be", with a 4.5 out of 5 rating:
"Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes has enough of the franchise's DNA to satisfy. And in some ways, zooming across a battlefield while triggering abilities like Assassinate or Nosferatu seems more in line with the chaotic, war-torn battlefields of Fodlan than what came before."
And Destructroid was also impressed with the latest Warriors entry, awarding a 9 out of 10 score:
"While the core Warriors gameplay likely isn’t going to completely win over folks who have already tried to get into it, those of you who do enjoy it should have a ton of fun with Three Hopes."

Heh, three hopes, and three reviews in this article. I see what you did there Nintendo Li--oh wait there's a fourth one.
Now I feel stupid.
Edit: there's a fifth one 💀
Looks like a success all around!
@HotGoomba Keep hitting that refresh button, they’ll be expanding the content until the ad revenue stops streaming in.
Does this game have a free mode though? Like the likes of FE:W and HW where all characters are available?
This honestly feels like the best Musou yet, like they actually slammed their hands down and actually try to make a quality game. Given it still has flaws, I do believe that this is something they gave a damn about because their sister dev team had worked on Three Houses.
I'll pick it up when it eventually goes on sale, like I did for age of calamity.
Well looks like Nintendo won't kill off Fire Emblem Warriors series any time soon and they shouldn't have to as FE make sense to be a Warriors game just like Dragon Quest Heroes (Dragon Warriors), Nobunaga's Ambition (Samurai Warriors), Legend of Zelda (Hyrule Warriors), and Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Dynasty Warriors).
"Three Hopes" and "Age of Calamity" seem like they might be setting a precedent of combining Musou gameplay with plotlines that function as semi-sequels/prequels to the base games (FE: Three Houses and TLoZ: Breath of the Wild). I'll be interested to see if there are any other major titles that get the same treatment in the future.
Persona 5 Strikers as well, now that I think of it.
Based on gameplay videos it seems smoother than Age of Calamity all round. Which is a plus since low framerates in some areas really hurt my experience of that game. Can anyone confirm?
Played the demo and then went and bought the game. Definitely feels like their best effort yet for the more traditional Musou. Though I must say I absolutely loved Persona Strikers and I would hope they do more in the style of Persona Strikers for another series with a smaller cast. Maybe even a Tokyo Mirage Sessions sequel if they ever did I think would be perfect for that style.
Just give us a traditional Fire Emblem game Nintendo! Sick of these unnecessary cash grabs
Glad it turned out well despite my lack of interest in it. I still haven’t picked up Age of Calamity since I’m not a huge fan of beat ‘em up games. That said, I replayed the demo for Age of Calamity last week and had fun with it, so I might pick the game up and if I enjoy it enough, maybe I’ll get Three Hopes down the road… we shall see.
This is my first Musou game, and after playing about 3 hours so far of the demo, I've greatly enjoyed it! I'm glad to see it reviewing well so far, and I'm excited to see where the storyline with the Blue Lions goes. I'm already quite confused by the story so far haha.
@sakuraprisma Did you play Three Houses? Even though the story diverges early on in Three Hopes, it really helps to know the original events and characters.
@Matroska I did yes! Its my most played game on my Switch and I even started with Blue Lions haha. My love for DImitri knows no bounds.
I'm just very interested but confused on where this game is going, and it feels like the prologue is moving fast lol.
I enjoyed the demo but not enough to buy today. Definitely a wait for sale but it's a huge upgrade from Age of Calamity
I'll be holding off from buying this for a while. There's Sunbreak coming out soon, then is Xenoblades 3 and I have yet to finish SMT5. Elder Ring messed up my schedule :/
@andyg1412 What we had like 5 traditional FE games this gen: three Fire Emblem Fate games came out in 2015, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadow of Valentia came out in 2017, and Fire Emblem Three Houses came out in 2019. Tokyo Mirage Sessions which is a FE/SMT crossover came out in 2015 and 2020. Also in 2020 we even got an anniversary retro re-release of the very first Fire Emblem for Famicom on Switch as a limited digital download. Trust me we need this one, besides this is only the second FEW game, Nintendo ain't rushing to milk this like Activision milking COD.
I'll add it to the wishlist. It's not that I don't like the game but I don't have time as MH Sunbreak, AI: Nirvana and Xenoblade 3 are coming up.
It's a good summer for Switch owners.
@ModdedInkling that's interesting, since the 1 released before this was like the worst, & got horrible ratings for a musou game (& not just on switch). Can't remember if it was samurai warriors, or what, but it was the most recent release. I wonder why the difference in quality between that game & this one?
