@Gamergirl94 I agree. I don't see how a NCU could work (assuming people are thinking an Infinity Stone Saga style overlapping story). They should keep it simple, maybe a Mario Cinematic Universe, but the overlapping stories should be very minor and secondary to the story of each film. There is no need for Zelda + Mario movie.
I'm hoping we see other parts of Universal het involved. Illumination are releasing two movies in one year for the only the second time this year. They have their own franchises like Minions, Sing, Secret lives of Pets etc so they don't have the capacity for everything Nintendo. Illumination could easily get 5-10 movies from Mario (x 2 direct sequels, Luigi's Mansion, Peach + Toad, Bowser stand alone, Yoshi etc). Let Dreamworks Animation pick up another franchise, personally I think Splatoon should go into development, aim to release Splatoon 4 and a movie in the same year (2027?)...
Given the movie with Illumination and the theme park stuff, I'm assuming there is some sort of deal in place with Universal...right now I think everything will be released by them or by a studio they own...is that right?
@AstroTheGamosian I agree with you, I'd like to see Dreamworks Animation do Star Fox. Have you see The Bad Guys? Something similar to that would be great.
@Debbiee That's a good question! I think they have to put stuff in for the fans, it has to be a recognisable world and there are characters they should include, but I don't think it should be "breath of the wild the movie".
@Debbiee I would love a Lord of the Rings style Zelda trilogy, really epic, mature, great story and I think it's got a big enough profile to justify a HUGE budget - $600m product for trilogy?
Personally I think Illumination should just focus on Mario andnthe linked franchises so i'd be happy with any of these:- 1. Mario sequel 2. Luigi's Mansion 3. Donkey Kong
I saw a video a video on youtube speculating about a Peach + Toad movie or something for Bowser - both great ideas. Illumination could do 10 projects (including sequels) if they get the scripts right.
All of these could have the same art style.
If Ninendo have a deal with Universal, they own Dreamworks Animation - maybe they could do Splatoon and/or Star Fox?
@Deemo37 I agreed a "NCU" joined up universe would be a bad idea, but they could do a Mario Cinematic Universe with Mario, Donkey Kong, Luigi's Mansion, Captain Toad etc. I don't think they would need to be as interconnected or built towards a climax like the Infinity Saga, but some light cross over could work?
If they did a Smash movie, I don't think they'd need to do loads of movies to introduce characters, just make it a stand alone thing, would you use the Illumination Mario art style? Not sure - either way, this should be WAY down the list of possible projects, there are at least 10 other games I would turn into one or more movies/TV shows before Smash.
@AstroTheGamosian I don't think they should create a linked NCU as the tone and art style of the games are so different (Mario v Zelda v Splatoon), if they did fans wouldn't be happy.
They could create their own MCU (Mario Cinematic Universe) with movies and tv shows for; Mario, Donkey Kong, Luigi's Mansion, Captain Toad and maybe Mario Kart? How about something about Bowser and his family?
But the wider "NCU" should be standalone IMO. A Zelda trilogy doesn't need to link to anything else.
@MontyCircus I was thinking about that earlier. Warcraft took $440m worldwide...how many Nintendo franchises (if turned into movies) would you expect to beat that...I think it's a long list!
@AstroTheGamosian would you prefer animated or live action Zelda? I'd prefer live action but @Wiiiiiiiiiii disagrees.
Illumination just just focus on Mario and the related projects (Donkey Kong, Luigi's Mansion, Captain Toad etc) - have a different studio in Universal work on other IP.
@JohnnyMind I'd like to know what the deal is. I'm assuming there is some sort of deal with Universal (who own Illumination) so DreamWorks Animation is a possibility. I think Illumination have nailed the art style for Mario, so they should focus on that, a good writer could do something fantastic with Donkey Kong or Luigi's Mansion.
@Cashews I like the idea of Metroid as a TV show, but I still think live action would be the way to go, I think it would have a bigger audience than if it were animated.
Casting would be a risk in Zelda, but there are lots of options...Natalie Dormer to play Zelda? If she wasn't the voice of Princess Peach, Anya Taylor-Joy could be an option too.
@Fake-news Hopefully we get lots of sequels! If it was up to me, they would :- 1. Keep Illumination focused on Mario (make a trilogy, a couple of Donkey Kong movies, a Luigi's Mansion movie etc) 2. Put DreamWorks Animation on a different franchise - Splatoon maybe? 3. Have Universal do a Zelda live action trilogy with a huge budget, aim for a Lord of Rings scale set of movies
@Shiro28 @Thwomp_Stomper @nessisonett Thanks for the recommendation! I will play it at some point, I recently got the NSO expansion pass, so I'll get to it soon, but not before TotK unfortunately. @JohnnyMind I don't have a 3DS, so i'll make to make do with NSO, not sure if NSO is better or worse than the N64? I know there were issues when it launched, but I thought they had all been fixed?
@mudmask A friend of mine suggested Zelda should be a 9 film Skywalker style (prequel, main story + aftermath) set of three trilogies! Not sure it needs that much but i'd love to see a Lord of the Rings level trilogy!
I'd be worried if the next project is Zelda, I think the key people at Nintendo need a few projects under their belt first, they obviously won't be writing, producing etc, but having that experience of providing creative input, what works and doesn't etc I think is important.
A live action Zelda trilogy needs a £500m (minimum) production budget and Nintendo is a conservative organisation so lets see Mario, Donkey Kong, Luigi's Mansion and Splatoon first!
@nocdaes It's hard to compare regarding inflation due to Mario releasing on the Wednesday. Frozen 2 made £6m more over the first weekend when adjusted for inflation, but how many people who saw it on the Wednesday and Thursday would have saw it over the weekend instead? If it had the same release pattern as Frozen 2.
Frozen domestic week 1 (adjusted for inflation) is £152m, Mario did £204m.
@prw_88 I disagree, I think other franchises could do very well too, Nintendo and Universal will have to work harder, but they can make it work. Avatar is the biggest box office movie ever, it was unknown before it came out, as was Frozen ($1.3bn at the box office), you can also consider Guardians of the Galaxy.
I'm not saying every Nintendo is going to break $1bn, but they can all be profitable if they are done right.
@RetroGames @Sonicka I wonder if whatever the deal that has been agreed is between Nintendo and Illumination or Nintendo and Universal (owner of Illumination). If the deal is with Universal, you'd think that makes some live action adaptations more likely. Also, Universal also own Dreamworks Animation. The Bad Guys and some of their other titles have a different look to a typical Illumination title. Maybe Illumination manage Mario and Donkey Kong and Dreamworks develop a different IP?
@mudmask If i'm Nintendo i'm planning out with Illumination and Universal the next half a dozenn releases, I think the projects they should be considering are:- 1. Mario sequels (trilogy?) 2. Donkey Kong movies (2 or 3?) 3. Captain Toad TV show 4. Bowser TV show 4. Luigis Mansion movie
I jokingly asked Chat GPT to write a description of a TV show called Keeping up with the Koopas, a comedy based on the Kardashians about the Koopa family. But given how well Jack Black has been received I think they should seriously bounced some ideas around to see if they can create a concept they like.
I expect we will see multiple items from my list before we see anything from any other franchise.
@Rainz I also think they should hold off on doing anything Zelda or Metroid related. Give it 5 - 7 years, get 3 or 4 releases under their belt so they have learned some lessons etc and then make a decision on if they want to go live action or not.
@Rainz I think they should avoid building towards an end game style finale. The whole Infinity Saga was epic, but Marvel have been struggling since it finished.
Nintendo have enough IP to do so many different things. Imagine a Mario trilogy, a Splatoon trilogy, TV shows for Captain Toad and Star Fox, all stand alone within their own IP (maybe limited cross over between Mario, Donkey Kong and Captain Toad) but the releases intertwined. So one a year but you might go two years between Splatoon movies.
@Rainz i'd love to be a fly on the wall when they are planning out how they move forward. I've said this in previous posts, I think they should focus on Mario and Donkey Kong for the next few releases whilst they find their feet and build up to one release per year (movie or TV show). I'd go for Splatoon as the first non Mario relares IP.
@RetroGames Looking back on my original post, I would reword it to it being remembered as much as the start of the NCU as a standalone movie. You're right there is a lot of entertainment here, I remember glancing at my my son in the cinema and he had his mouth open at one particular bit, he loved it - I think he'll remember it when he's grown up.
Personally I loved it, I think the weakest part was the introduction of Mario into the Mushroom Kingdom, he was just some random guy - that should have been better written. But that didn't detract from my experience. I'm thinking about taking my children to watch it again in 3D!!
BTW, when I say NCU, I don't think we need a Marvel style cross over movie with Mario, Zelda, Samus etc. Keep them all separate.
@Tantani They could absolutely do much more. But if they are smart, they will look at how Disney is ruining Marvel and Star Wars and hopefully realise a slightly slower pace of higher quality releases which the fans love will give them more longevity, opportunities to build up their smaller IPs and profits than rushing out 3 or 4 projects per year.
@RetroGames @Diogmites I would argue this movie will not be remembered on its own, but as the opening filming in the "NCU". It will be talked about as one part of a greater whole. I think we're looking at a Mario Trilogy, a couple of Donkey Kong movies, maybe a Luigi's Mansion movie or TV show, and that's before you consider all their other IP.
If I were Nintendo Splatoon would be the next IP I'd look at followed by Star Fox. I'd hold off on Zelda and Metroid until they have found their feet in making movies - either of those could be their first live action movie.
@FishyS I felt the critics and the movie review on this site have been harsh, but on second thought, I would agree IF they applied to the 3rd or 4th movie. There is more than enough entertainment in this, but the amount of story will need to increase as they release more.
Hopefully the next one is already in production! Not sure if i'd prefer Mario Movie 2 or a Donkey Kong movie. The more I think about it, the more I think Nintendo have enough franchises and IP to do one release per year, which could be a movie or a TV show. Hopefully they can get into that rhythm by the end of the decade.
I think we'll see at least two more Mario/Donkey Kong related titles before we see a different IP.
@Fizza I think Nintendo should hold off on doing anything related to Zelda or Metroid for now. The tone and style is completely different to what Illumination usually do and they are the best options for live action movies. I would focus on Mario and Donkey Kong for now and I would use Splatoon as the first non Mario franchise to work with.
I asked ChatGPT to write a premise for a reality TV show called 'Keeping Up With The Koopas", this is what it came up with!
"Keeping Up with the Koopas" is a satirical TV show based on the Super Mario video game characters and inspired by "Keeping Up with the Kardashians". The show follows the wacky and dysfunctional Koopa family as they scheme, bicker and compete with each other in the Mushroom Kingdom. The Koopas may be related, but that doesn't stop them from constantly plotting against one another.
Despite their constant rivalry, the Koopas are bound together by their family ties, and their interactions are filled with humor and absurdity. From epic battles to petty squabbles, "Keeping Up with the Koopas" is a hilarious and irreverent take on the classic video game characters, and a must-see for fans of Mario and comedy."
There are so many posibilities. I could see a couple of direct sequels, Donkey Kong movies and a Luigi's Mansion movie. Plus how about a Captain Toad TV show?
Plus I would be shocked if we don't see content related to Splatoon, Zelda and Metroid. Star Fox would be great too.
@Beaucine I didn't know about developers being bonused in that way. I do think NintendoLife are really good. They have a clear scoring policy and it's not often I disagree with them. It would be great if they had the staff numbers to go back and review more games after they are patched etc, but they are a business at the end of the day and the cost may be hard to justify.
I watched it this morning and loved it!!! As did my children. It's not a perfect movie or even what you'd expect from a perfect Mario movie. I do think the 6/10 is harsh, the video discussion was good (despite Jim's audio which is understable as he's not a regular with the setup) and I think they make some good points. Personally I would recommend it. The point about a sequel being slower paced is valid and hopefully what we get.
@Beaucine I was someone who posted in surprise at the 6/10. According to NintendoLife's scoring policy a six is something to approach with caution and may be flawed in crucial ways. https://www.nintendolife.com/scoring
This is all subjective, but I don't think the movie is a 9 or 10, but I found it very entertaining, of course there are areas it could be improved. But a game getting a 6/10 on this site is enough for me to question buying it and most times I won't.
@KIRO I have seen it already (took the children to first showing this morning!) and it's very entertaining, yes the story is straightforward, but it's great!! Plus there were a number of threads they could explore in future movies.
@Williamfuchs420 I think they need to learn from where Marvel is right now and not overdo things. I think one movie every 18 months is fine. IMO, the next ones will be:- Mario Movie 2 Mario Movie 3 Luigi's Mansion Donkey Kong
Not in that order.
I think they need to consider Metroid and Zelda being with someone other than Illumination, personally I would like to see both of those being live action.
@Uncle_Franklin @Frailbay30 I was smiling all the way through and my children loved it. Would I have enjoyed it as much if I wasn't a Mario fan? probably not. But there are a LOT of Mario fans out there. The story is straightforward, but I don't think it diminishes the experience at all. If anything, you could argue it's a benefit, if this is suppose to the first in a series of movies, keeping things simple may help non Mario fans to understand some of the elements taken from the game.
Look at the Mummy movie with Tom Cruise, it was supposed to launch a franchise but it forgot to be entertaining and killed it off - this is wall to wall entertainment.

Re: Video: Let's Discuss The Super Mario Bros. Movie
@lemonjellydude I hadn't considered that until now, you're right, it really did have the feel of the game!
@huupawel you're right, nothing is ruined regarding future movies. A solid start, with room for improvement.
Re: Video: Let's Discuss The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Re: Movie Review: The Super Mario Bros. Movie - A Fun Ride That Substitutes Story For Spectacle
@Beaucine I was someone who posted in surprise at the 6/10. According to NintendoLife's scoring policy a six is something to approach with caution and may be flawed in crucial ways.

This is all subjective, but I don't think the movie is a 9 or 10, but I found it very entertaining, of course there are areas it could be improved. But a game getting a 6/10 on this site is enough for me to question buying it and most times I won't.
Re: Super Mario Bros. Movie DVD, Blu-ray And 4K Steelbook Pre-Orders Are Now Live
@KIRO I have seen it already (took the children to first showing this morning!) and it's very entertaining, yes the story is straightforward, but it's great!! Plus there were a number of threads they could explore in future movies.
Re: Super Mario Bros. Movie DVD, Blu-ray And 4K Steelbook Pre-Orders Are Now Live
@FragRed Some do, Babylon which was released in January had a Steelbook available around the time it opened in the Cinema.
Re: Movie Review: The Super Mario Bros. Movie - A Fun Ride That Substitutes Story For Spectacle
@Williamfuchs420 I think they need to learn from where Marvel is right now and not overdo things. I think one movie every 18 months is fine. IMO, the next ones will be:-
Mario Movie 2
Mario Movie 3
Luigi's Mansion
Donkey Kong
Not in that order.
I think they need to consider Metroid and Zelda being with someone other than Illumination, personally I would like to see both of those being live action.
Re: Movie Review: The Super Mario Bros. Movie - A Fun Ride That Substitutes Story For Spectacle
