Nintendolife has time to report about smartphone cases, but those latest NPD results? Nope, no time for those... Wonder why? Could it be because of the NS doing badly?
At this point in its lifecycle, the 3DS had already sold 3.3 million units in Japan alone, and that's with the disastrous launch window that it had, leaving it far behind Wii & DS.
Now NS is falling even further behind. In just a few short weeks, the 3DS/NS comparison will look even worse.
And the bit about 2DS and 3DS games selling more this fiscal year than Switch games? That's Nintendo's official estimate. Even Nintendo doesn't think that Switch games will do overall very well this and next year.
@BAN You are aware that the latest Nintendo hardware release was the New 2DS XL, right? And that even Nintendo expects their 2DS and 3DS systems to sell more games in the 2017 - 2018 financial year, right?
Considering all that, this site really shouldn't be as much "Switch Life" as it has been lately.
@Jamotello Yeah, nobody cares about the 3D. Lots of 2DS systems out there, and even many 3DS owners turn the 3D off... including New 3DS owners.
But the graphics have still been updated and there are other additions, so it's more like an enhanced port. This will look better on a 2DS system than the original DS game does.
@Mando44646 Oh, alright. Just be aware that situation will continue like this for a long time: PS4 and 2DS are where the RPGs are coming. A lot of the games available for them will probably never come to Switch.
@westman98 "The Wii was far more popular in 2010/2011 than the 3DS will be in 2017/2018, especially outside of Japan. Mario in general was also bigger on the Wii than in the 3DS."
For once we are in complete agreement. Even with the 2DS models, the 2DS/3DS family has never been as popular as Wii was outside Japan.
Even so, the recent success of games like Miitopia, FE Fates and Super Mario Maker show that there's demand for more games on these systems. If a niche RPG title like Miitopia can do this well, think about what a brand new Mario title could do.
@fox_mattcloud Miitopia is a great game and it's enjoying good word of mouth. While it's a niche RPG by nature, it's still a fresh and new game concept instead of yet another Brain Training game.
@electrolite77 Look at the poll results. The number 1 choice is once again "Nothing for me this week". The number 2 choice is a piece of DLC that is free for owners of the game.
And then there's the fact that NL didn't have anything better for the header image. A game described like this: "arrived on WiiWare and 3DS... It's the same game..."
So either don't hype up a poor week or show up something better for it.
@NinNin @westman98 You should know very well that during that point in their history, Nintendo barely released any Mario games at all. From Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island to New Super Mario Bros. on DS, it took a whole 11 years without a brand new 2D Mario game. Instead, they released Wario Land games, made by the Super Mario Land team, and ports of the existing Mario games.
The current Nintendo operates in a different way. Counting in SMM, there have been 7 new 2D Mario games in the past 11 years. You can see from this that the past 11 years have been very different than the 11 years before that.
@westman98 You're forgetting Europe. Thanks to European sales of the 2DS specifically, the system has been offsetting slowing sales in the US. And it's thanks to the 2DS and now New 2DS that the hardware family is up year on year in Japan too. Sure, Dragon Quest XI week is exceptional, but the system will keep selling for a long time still.
When talking New SMB Wii sales, you also forget that shipping does not equal sellthrough to customers. You've got over 8 million copies of New SMB Wii that were shipped well past the game's original launch window, from 2010 to 2011 to onwards, and that's without question "late Wii lifecycle". If Nintendo had not cut out Wii support in 2012 in their foolish hopes that Wii U would replace Wii, this might be a different discussion, but that's what happened and here we are.
"Mario Worlrd 2 and NSMB Wii were released 5 and 3 years into the SNES and Wii's lifecycle respectively"
@NinNin was trying to make the point that Super Mario Galaxy 2 sold less than SMG1 because of the timing, and no Mario games do well late in the lifecycle, when that is patently false. New SMB Wii sold a huge part of those 30 million in the Wii's later years, and SMW2 probably sold for a long time too.
@westman98 "No Mario platformer has ever been released during the 7th year of any Nintendo platform's lifecycle, and I doubt that will change anytime soon."
That's because very few Nintendo systems have ever survived 7 years. The success of the New 2DS XL and even the original 2DS is changing that. Did you know that thanks to 2DS, the sales of the "2DS and 3DS hardware family" have actually RISEN year on year?
That means that people are buying more 2DS systems than they were before, and that's even with the original 2DS, let alone the New 2DS XL.
Also, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island came out in 1995, a whole 5 years after Super Nintendo was launched in Japan, and the Super Nintendo was already on its last legs by then.
@westman98 "I'd say the 3DS software lineup is for those who haven't yet picked a 3DS up in the last 6 years.
Stuff like Miitopia, Hey Pikmin, and Monster Hunter Stories seem to target kids who can't handle hardcore JRPGs, a real Pikmim game, or a Monster Hunter game."
That's what you wrote. Are you trying to change the story now?
Also, that result is surprisingly good for Miitopia exactly because it is a quirky niche RPG in the UK market. And it's just another game in the vast 2DS game catalog.
But Splatoon 2 is a Switch tentpole release. It is without a doubt Switch's biggest exclusive game, and will remain so for many months to come, possibly even longer. That in itself tells you that Switch and Splatoon 2 aren't doing all that well outside Japan.
@Luna_110 Have you seen the latest charts? New 2DS XL was Japan's best-selling system again. Miitopia was 5th best selling game in UK in its launch week, and that's in a tough market for the system. And then there are the massive million-breaking sales of Dragon Quest XI.
@buildz Miitopia had a good amount of people interested in it because the eShop demo was good. The UK cover even has a QR code advertising a free download of the demo: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0716HQLLY/
The original 2DS is a great system. Design wise, it's even better than the New 2DS XL, which packs in some extra processing power in exchange. This OG 2DS is very comfortable for the hands and great to play the vast game catalogue on.

Re: Nintendo Software Dominates The Week's Japanese Charts
Hahahaha this "news" and the lack of the actual chart! NSlife still up to their old tricks I see!
Re: Nintendo Switch Continues to Dominate in Japan
At this point in its lifecycle, 3DS had already sold over 4 million systems in Japan. The gap between NS and 3DS is growing bigger every week.
Re: These Lovely Smartphone Cases Are Now Available Via My Nintendo, But Only In Japan
Nintendolife has time to report about smartphone cases, but those latest NPD results? Nope, no time for those... Wonder why? Could it be because of the NS doing badly?
Re: Nintendo Switch Ends 2017 On A High With 2.5 Million Units Sold In Japan Alone

Now NS is falling even further behind. In just a few short weeks, the 3DS/NS comparison will look even worse.
Re: Switch and Nintendo Systems Dominated US Hardware Sales in October
@gortsi Ah, the NS fan club, oblivious to reality.
Even in the NS launch year, the PS4 is the best-selling system for the year in the US. And it's only going to get worse.
Re: Nintendo Download: 9th November (Europe)
@OorWullie NS sales are weak and they're about to get weaker. The NS game lineup is total garbage. Enjoy.
Re: Nintendo Download: 9th November (Europe)
What a terrible week.
Luckily 2DS is getting more games soon.
Re: Soapbox: Breath Of The Wild Is Amazing, But Is It The Game That Zelda Enthusiasts Expected?
Nope. Alright game, but not a good Zelda game. A much more forgettable experience than all the hype led you to believe.
Re: Super Famicom Mini Greatly Outsold Famicom Mini In Japan
Really impressive. Now Nintendo just needs to manufacture enough of these!
Re: Share Your Miiverse Memories On The "Everybody's Message Community"
@Ralek85 Wii sold over 900 million games and is still selling more! Your Wii hatred is ridiculous, biased and unfounded.
Re: Share Your Miiverse Memories On The "Everybody's Message Community"
@gatorboi352 If NS lasts as long as Wii did, it will be at least some level of success.
And you know that coming from me, that's high praise.
Re: Feature: The Big Nintendo Direct Summary - 13th September
Switch fans have been very angry after the Direct. It's hilarious!
@GrailUK If I had a Switch, I surely would be complaining also. Luckily, I don't have one! And after this Direct, there's zero reason to consider one.
Re: Atlus Confirms A Western 3DS Release For The Alliance Alive In Early 2018
@Krillin_ There are around 60 million more 2DS and 3DS owners out there than Switch owners. Many of us will likely never buy a Switch.
Stop begging for Switch games. It's your own fault for buying a poor system.
Re: Switch Sales Fall Dramatically In Japan, But Splatoon 2 Passes The One Million Marker
@BAN Are you kidding me? These are only some of the games coming to 2DS and 3DS:
Monster Hunter Stories - autumn
Metroid: Samus Returns - autumn
Fire Emblem Warriors - autumn
River City: Rival Showdown - autumn
Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters - autumn
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions - autumn
Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon - autumn
Layton's Mystery Journey - autumn
Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth - Q4 2017
Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology - Q1 2018
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux - Q1 2018
Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido - 2018
And the bit about 2DS and 3DS games selling more this fiscal year than Switch games? That's Nintendo's official estimate. Even Nintendo doesn't think that Switch games will do overall very well this and next year.
Re: First Impressions: Piczle Lines DX is Another Reminder of the Switch Hybrid's Appeal
This looks much worse than the Picross games on 2DS. For anybody considering this, do yourself a favor and play the Picross games instead.

@Aaron09 No they're not. PS4 is great. Switch is garbage.
Re: Nintendo Download: 24th August (Europe)
So many discounts, with lots of good stuff!
Re: Nintendo Download: 17th August (Europe)
@dizzy_boy Plenty of Virtual Console titles in the past few weeks. Best part is, those don't even require the Gamepad to play.
Re: Nintendo Download: 17th August (Europe)
That "Little Adventure on the Prairie" description... what?
Re: Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Keep Top 10 Places in the UK Charts
@Wichtel You really should get a PS4. Loads of great games there.
Re: Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Keep Top 10 Places in the UK Charts
@Anti-Matter Miitopia is doing pretty well in the UK as elsewhere. It's still number 11 in the invidual release charts.
Re: Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Will Make Its Case on 3DS in November
@Jamotello Yeah, nobody cares about the 3D. Lots of 2DS systems out there, and even many 3DS owners turn the 3D off... including New 3DS owners.

These are great on PS4.
Re: Nintendo Download: 10th August (North America)

Re: Nintendo Download: 10th August (North America)
@Mando44646 Yeah, and I'm saying that the RPGs are all there on PS4 and 2DS. Have you played Miitopia yet?
No use complaining about the games Switch doesn't have when there are so many games readily available on PS4 and 2DS.
Re: Nintendo Download: 10th August (North America)
@Mando44646 "We need moar RPGs"
Then get a 2DS. (Or a PS4.)
Re: Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Will Make Its Case on 3DS in November
@Jamotello You do know 2DS and 3DS have sold 67 million, and Switch has sold 4.7 million, right?

Re: Dragon Quest XI Delivers Extraordinary Sales on 3DS, as Switch Hardware Continues to Thrive
@westman98 Considering Super Mario Maker just came out 8 months ago, I'm sure nobody was expecting a brand new Mario platformer so soon after that.
Re: Dragon Quest XI Delivers Extraordinary Sales on 3DS, as Switch Hardware Continues to Thrive
@westman98 "Splatoon 2 is the Switches biggest exclusive in Japan only"
Do tell me, what bigger exclusives does Switch have outside Japan than Splatoon 2? There's Mario, and... uh, that's that.
We are looking at potentially 12 months or more for Switch where the big exclusives are Splatoon 2 and Mario and nothing else.
Re: Dragon Quest XI Delivers Extraordinary Sales on 3DS, as Switch Hardware Continues to Thrive

@westman98 What you said means you have a complete lack of understanding about what Miitopia is, let alone how it has performed.
So either you're completely ignorant about the game, or you're trying to downplay the success of new 2DS games.
Re: Dragon Quest XI Delivers Extraordinary Sales on 3DS, as Switch Hardware Continues to Thrive
@westman98 Miitopia was 5th best selling game in the UK in single platform charts. Have you even seen the game?

You were talking about spin there?
Re: Dragon Quest XI Delivers Extraordinary Sales on 3DS, as Switch Hardware Continues to Thrive
@ajcismo The 3DS launch was terrible. Don't you remember that it had a massive price cut just a few months into its life?
The current success is thanks to the later models, especially 2DS and New 2DS XL.

Re: My Nintendo Updates with New Kirby and Star Fox Rewards
@erv 2DS, 3DS and Wii U total install base: over 80 million.
Switch install base: 4.7 million.

Unprecedented Switch support from Atlus.
@Oscarzxn Switch is garbage, and it has no install base. Why would this be on Switch?
