Re: Switch Sales Fall Dramatically In Japan, But Splatoon 2 Passes The One Million Marker

Mahe

@BAN Are you kidding me? These are only some of the games coming to 2DS and 3DS:

Monster Hunter Stories - autumn
Metroid: Samus Returns - autumn
Fire Emblem Warriors - autumn
River City: Rival Showdown - autumn
Yo-kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters - autumn
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions - autumn
Pokemon Ultra Sun / Ultra Moon - autumn
Layton's Mystery Journey - autumn
Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth - Q4 2017
Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology - Q1 2018
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux - Q1 2018
Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido - 2018

And the bit about 2DS and 3DS games selling more this fiscal year than Switch games? That's Nintendo's official estimate. Even Nintendo doesn't think that Switch games will do overall very well this and next year.

Re: Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Will Make Its Case on 3DS in November

Mahe

@Jamotello Yeah, nobody cares about the 3D. Lots of 2DS systems out there, and even many 3DS owners turn the 3D off... including New 3DS owners.

But the graphics have still been updated and there are other additions, so it's more like an enhanced port. This will look better on a 2DS system than the original DS game does.

Re: Nintendo Download: 10th August (North America)

Mahe

@Mando44646 Oh, alright. Just be aware that situation will continue like this for a long time: PS4 and 2DS are where the RPGs are coming. A lot of the games available for them will probably never come to Switch.

Re: Nintendo Download: 10th August (North America)

Mahe

@Mando44646 Yeah, and I'm saying that the RPGs are all there on PS4 and 2DS. Have you played Miitopia yet?

No use complaining about the games Switch doesn't have when there are so many games readily available on PS4 and 2DS.

@westman98 "The Wii was far more popular in 2010/2011 than the 3DS will be in 2017/2018, especially outside of Japan. Mario in general was also bigger on the Wii than in the 3DS."

For once we are in complete agreement. Even with the 2DS models, the 2DS/3DS family has never been as popular as Wii was outside Japan.

Even so, the recent success of games like Miitopia, FE Fates and Super Mario Maker show that there's demand for more games on these systems. If a niche RPG title like Miitopia can do this well, think about what a brand new Mario title could do.

Re: Nintendo Download: 3rd August (Europe)

Mahe

@electrolite77 Look at the poll results. The number 1 choice is once again "Nothing for me this week". The number 2 choice is a piece of DLC that is free for owners of the game.

And then there's the fact that NL didn't have anything better for the header image. A game described like this: "arrived on WiiWare and 3DS... It's the same game..."

So either don't hype up a poor week or show up something better for it.

Re: Dragon Quest XI Delivers Extraordinary Sales on 3DS, as Switch Hardware Continues to Thrive

@NinNin @westman98 You should know very well that during that point in their history, Nintendo barely released any Mario games at all. From Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island to New Super Mario Bros. on DS, it took a whole 11 years without a brand new 2D Mario game. Instead, they released Wario Land games, made by the Super Mario Land team, and ports of the existing Mario games.

The current Nintendo operates in a different way. Counting in SMM, there have been 7 new 2D Mario games in the past 11 years. You can see from this that the past 11 years have been very different than the 11 years before that.

Re: Dragon Quest XI Delivers Extraordinary Sales on 3DS, as Switch Hardware Continues to Thrive

Mahe

@westman98 You're forgetting Europe. Thanks to European sales of the 2DS specifically, the system has been offsetting slowing sales in the US. And it's thanks to the 2DS and now New 2DS that the hardware family is up year on year in Japan too. Sure, Dragon Quest XI week is exceptional, but the system will keep selling for a long time still.

When talking New SMB Wii sales, you also forget that shipping does not equal sellthrough to customers. You've got over 8 million copies of New SMB Wii that were shipped well past the game's original launch window, from 2010 to 2011 to onwards, and that's without question "late Wii lifecycle". If Nintendo had not cut out Wii support in 2012 in their foolish hopes that Wii U would replace Wii, this might be a different discussion, but that's what happened and here we are.

Re: Dragon Quest XI Delivers Extraordinary Sales on 3DS, as Switch Hardware Continues to Thrive

@westman98 "no new Mario platformer released on it 8 years in"

You gotta watch this one, he's tricky with words...
https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/3ds-eshop/super_mario_bros_deluxe_gbc

"Mario Worlrd 2 and NSMB Wii were released 5 and 3 years into the SNES and Wii's lifecycle respectively"

@NinNin was trying to make the point that Super Mario Galaxy 2 sold less than SMG1 because of the timing, and no Mario games do well late in the lifecycle, when that is patently false. New SMB Wii sold a huge part of those 30 million in the Wii's later years, and SMW2 probably sold for a long time too.

Re: Dragon Quest XI Delivers Extraordinary Sales on 3DS, as Switch Hardware Continues to Thrive

Mahe

@westman98 "No Mario platformer has ever been released during the 7th year of any Nintendo platform's lifecycle, and I doubt that will change anytime soon."

That's because very few Nintendo systems have ever survived 7 years. The success of the New 2DS XL and even the original 2DS is changing that. Did you know that thanks to 2DS, the sales of the "2DS and 3DS hardware family" have actually RISEN year on year?

That means that people are buying more 2DS systems than they were before, and that's even with the original 2DS, let alone the New 2DS XL.

Also, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island came out in 1995, a whole 5 years after Super Nintendo was launched in Japan, and the Super Nintendo was already on its last legs by then.

Re: Dragon Quest XI Delivers Extraordinary Sales on 3DS, as Switch Hardware Continues to Thrive

Mahe

@westman98 "I'd say the 3DS software lineup is for those who haven't yet picked a 3DS up in the last 6 years.

Stuff like Miitopia, Hey Pikmin, and Monster Hunter Stories seem to target kids who can't handle hardcore JRPGs, a real Pikmim game, or a Monster Hunter game."

That's what you wrote. Are you trying to change the story now?

Also, that result is surprisingly good for Miitopia exactly because it is a quirky niche RPG in the UK market. And it's just another game in the vast 2DS game catalog.

But Splatoon 2 is a Switch tentpole release. It is without a doubt Switch's biggest exclusive game, and will remain so for many months to come, possibly even longer. That in itself tells you that Switch and Splatoon 2 aren't doing all that well outside Japan.

Re: Persona Q2 is Confirmed for Nintendo 3DS

Mahe

@Luna_110 Have you seen the latest charts? New 2DS XL was Japan's best-selling system again. Miitopia was 5th best selling game in UK in its launch week, and that's in a tough market for the system. And then there are the massive million-breaking sales of Dragon Quest XI.

http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2017/08/japanese_sales_charts_dragon_quest_xi_almost_hits_1_million_in_less_than_a_week_on_ps4

Even Nintendo themselves are expecting more 2DS and 3DS game sales in fiscal year 2017 - 2018 than Switch game sales.
