Sometimes specific bundles and special editions take a while to hit various regions, but Nintendo of America wins the prize for one of the least expected 'catch ups' we've seen in a while. It's confirmed a 2DS bundle for the region, a version of which arrived in the same basic form in Europe way back in July 2014.
It's a red and white standard 2DS with New Super Mario Bros. 2 pre-installed; it'll hit North America on 25th August with a recommended price of $79.99USD.
It wouldn't surprise us if this proves to be a popular bundle, especially among parents looking for an affordable gaming system for their kids. It's a good price and includes a Mario platformer that's pre-installed, after all.
It'll be interesting to see how sales for standard 2DS models shape up in the coming months, in terms of how they'll compare to the New 2DS XL; perhaps bargain prices will win out above all else.

Yaaay
Sounds like a good price to me.
Sold! I'll have another system in the 3DS family
At least you, Americans, had to wait two years less than us, Europeans, for the last entry in Brain Age series
Wow or lol
I'm just surprised. The price is still the same as what they were pushing in 2014.
I wish Nintendo would explore the inter web
are they releasing this bundle just to confuse parents wanting to buy a new 2ds?
Older 2DS is still alive !
looks like they are trying to clear stock.
It also says all the DLC is included as well. Pretty good deal!
@Equinox
Um... $59.99 maybe ?
Great value.
My father got this bundle about a year ago and it was well worth it for him. The 2Ds is still a great "casual" console on the cheaper side and I have to admit, I actually really like the feel and weight of it.
Welp, with my purchase of a 2D XL last week, looks like my kid now has a 2DS of his own to play on.
And this is what happens when Reggie should of been fired 7 years ago.
That's a fairly reasonable price for a console running such ancient technology. There's no good reason why the New 2DS XL should have cost as much as it did, and with no included game, no less.
@MariOnline
Uh pretty sure 2DS only dropped to 79$ in 2016.
It was 129.99$ when it launched.
It's a budget model. Lack of 3D, and various other cost saving measures. It could go pretty low. It also lacks the extra power and larger size of the current "new" models"
I could see it dropping to 50-60$ in 2018.
I think it's a good deal for people in a tight budget or if you want to gift someone, you get access to a huge library of games and start off with a really good game.
Wouldn't Nintendo want to promote their NEW products?!
This never came out in the US before?! Nintendo you are just weird sometimes... Never change though!
This was probably the last bundle announcement that I was expecting. I figured they would push the 2DS XL.
A bit weird that they released it now, what the New 2ds XL's launch.
That's a great price if you need a gift for anyone.
@TheGreenMiner13 This is a great idea. The whole point of the 2DSXL was to provide a middle ground between 2DS and N3DSXL.
79.99$ is a big drop from 200$ after all.
This way there is a a budget option, a "Normal" option and a premium option in terms of price. This sort of thing is pretty common in tech.
They also should do a new round of Selects.
Link Between Worlds
Smash Bros
Super Mario 3D Land
Would be good choices.
I can now have this color style to add to my 2ds collection.
Now Nintendo needs to release the other crystal colors in the U.S.
This is great for my 5 year old. I'm jumping on this.
These budget models are just confusing for parents. Had a friend almost buy one for his son until I told him the game he wanted wasn't going to work on it. I had been looking to buy a 2ds XL for my daughter and my wife is questioning why we can't buy the cheap one.
Maybe next paycheck?
This is just a move to get rid of them.
@Kobeskillz hi... Nice to see you.
I'm gonna get the N2DSXL this week
Interesting to see that they are still pushing the 3DS family. At this rate, it seems Nintendo will push the 3DS as their budget option versus the Switch.
Wow,that's cheap! Only $20 more than a full retail game.
Any indication if it's preinstalled on the SD card or if you get a code for the content? I've got a bunch of downloaded games on my 32gb and would have to lose New Super Mario Bros 2 in a transfer.
Proof once again that Reggie considers his U.S. customer base like they're bottom-feeding garbage eaters.
@chiefeagle02 Usually pre-installed. My Majora's Mask New 3DS XL had the game installed but after I transferred everything over, I had the option to redownload Majora's Mask off the eShop. From what I hear even if you reset the system back to factory settings, the bundled game will still be there.
This isn't terribly different from the $80 2DS + Mario Kart 7 bundle introduced last year, only with a different (and inferior IMO) game bundled in.
@NandN3ds and it itself comes with a game. i think i may jump on this.
I played 15 seconds of the demo at Gamestop and nothing about collecting coins for the heck of it seemed compelling. Plus the fact that it came out at the same time as NSMBU I almost skipped both. But with the good reviews for NSMBU i picked it up when I found it for $30 before I got my Wii U. Reviews for this game seemed to confirm that it wasnt worth my time with so many games in my backlog.
All that being said I always thought the white and red 2DS looked better than black ones so its cool this color is finally coming stateside. Famicom colors ftw. The newer red and blue face ones look cool though.
We bought my son a refurbished transparent red one off store.nintendo.com a couple years ago when he was just turning 8 and it really is a great system for young kids. No hinge to break means its a little closer to the Gameboy tradition of being almost indestructible. Especially with some cheap screen protectors slapped on there. They even have glass top/plastic bottom screen ones for less than $10 on some websites that people shop at.
MK7 is the perfect pack in game though so for the same price I'd stick with that. Especially if its going to be the only game for a while. Or the refurbished ones from nintendo are $60 and then you can pick your own $20 game. But really everyone should have MK7... or Animal Crossing. That would make a better bundle.
Just got the electric blue with MK7, my favourite edition so far
The original 2DS is a great system. Design wise, it's even better than the New 2DS XL, which packs in some extra processing power in exchange. This OG 2DS is very comfortable for the hands and great to play the vast game catalogue on.
@chiefeagle02 It says "included pre-installed" in the art box image from the article so i'm assuming it comes in the SD card ready to play.
For reference my MK7 bundle also came pre-installed by the way.
@Tokiwa @Angelic_Lapras_King Thank you both for your reply!
