Hats off to Capcom and the PS4/Xbox One release of Monster Hunter World. The returning co-op-centric franchise has stormed the Japanese charts according to the latest Media Create figures, taking the number one slot from Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (which held the position for just one week following its own debut). It comes hot off the heels of some seriously strong performances for Capcom, but that hasn't stopped Nintendo software titles from dominating most of the other slots in the top 10.

Even Yo-kai Watch Busters 2 made some waves at number nine (7,755).
In terms of hardware, vanilla PS4 sold the most (no doubt off the back of Monster Hunter), but Nintendo Switch came in second with an impressive 47,107 units shifted. Not bad at all.

Let us know what you make of today's figures. Some strong performance from Nintendo brands across the board...

That's fair though. MHW is a good game. I'm still bitter over what Capcom is doing but the game itself is good. Nintendo still going strong though.
Thank God you finally put them up, I thought the Irish lad would have a stroke if you didn't. As if there aren't another thousand websites who report them.
You got my message so.

Big jump in hardware sales for PS4 and very impressive debut for Monster Hunter World. Mario + Rabbids is hanging on in second place and 4 of the top 5 are Switch games.
Edit: And I'm going to add something before someone comes in here and tries to edit my comment like they did on Monday and removed the UK Charts.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/01/mario_kart_8_deluxe_breath_of_the_wild_and_pokemon_crystal_ride_high_in_the_uk_charts
There is nothing wrong with posting these charts, I pointed out numerous other sites publish them in full and have been doing so for years. I e-mailed RMC of GoNintendo immediately after my comment was edited and asked him about this, he very kindly got back to me within 10 minutes. Here is part of his response:
"I've never received a single complaint about copyright, or a single request for taking them down. The UK and Japanese charts are made public on the data trackers' websites for anyone to see. I can't imagine how they would be blocked from sharing, since anyone can look them up without any login."
I think as long as you reference and give credit to where you got the information, there shouldn't be a problem.
Can you please post the charts? They are formatted more neatly and show much more information.
This 'no chart included' article style is horrible. @SLIGEACH_EIRE can you fill in the blanks please?
Edit: Ah, you beat me to it. Thanks!
I don't like to hear that.
Time for Revenge from Nintendo Switch.
Let's kick PS4 butt, again !
Why you don't include the whole charts? Annoying that we must search it elsewhere.
@dom Please man, what's up with the no-chart format??
@Dom why the heck no charts everytime? You write a piece on the charts so just include the charts already
@Anti-Matter Are you 10 or what?
Cool beans. MHW is also the best rated MH ever on metacritic so far. Capcom hit it out of the park. We finally global. (Never seen a monster hunter game with a 2 week wait on amazon here in the states - good times)
Just super happy for Ubisoft. A new Rayman and Child of Light 2 on the switch would be amazing
And the Switch wins this

@SLIGEACH_EIRE ty!
"Nintendo Software Dominates The Week's Japanese Charts"
I guess that's one way to spin it!
So MHW outsold everything else on the chart combined. Not exactly Nintendo dominating...
If Monster Hunter keeps selling well it might be Capcom's most popular IP.
@chardir Shhh, don't contradict the narrative.
Nintendo Life please do not go down this path. If you only report the full charts when the Switch hardware is comprehensively on top that is not good journalism.
Yes I KNOW you are pro Nintendo but that’s not the point.
Deliberately not reporting certain facts is poor. Just a step down (or up) from lying. That’s what politicians do.
Why not report the PS4 and XBOX numbers also? I am a Nintendo fan but still want that information which I was happy to get from this site but now must look elsewhere.
Not that in this internet age that is a problem but nonetheless...
Don’t become like those annoying fanatic fanboy sites.
@chardir now that you mention it - the plain PS4 Also outsold every console combined.
@Equinox PS4 selling three times the number of Switch consoles in it's fifth year on the market is weak. Haha, go on then.
Japan sure loves Monster Hunter, don’t they?
@Elanczewski
I'm 33 years old.
Check my Profile.
Well I’ve heard great things about the game and it offered something fresh to the formula so credit due where its deserved.
Now we wait to see if these monsters have Legs.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Was hoping you had 1st post on this one, oh well, 3rd is good. And I like the explanation. Weird they would edit your post over copyright unless they got a C&D letter, which considering the widespread reporting of these numbers I doubt anyone cares.
And we know why it took so long, that spin title hardly wrote itself. 😉
I’ll wait until MH is released on PC and the community can mod the hell out of it so it becomes playable and something fresh.
@LUIGITORNADO already complaining? You are pathetic.
It would have been a different story if mhw was on the switch also. Ps4 wouldn't sold that many units.
@Anti-Matter even through the prism of atavistic "console wars" mentality, Switch dominated Japanese charts for many weeks. PS4 deserves what days in the limelight it gets. Besides, with rumoured data plans and speeds over there, MHW's lack of hardware portability could even end up encouraging more remote play, pushing or at least sustaining Vita sales as well.
@Elanczewski I asked a similar question the other day and was informed that Anti Matter's first language isn't English and that he has tried hard to learn it. Hope this helps.
Oh come on, even Push Square isn't afraid to admit it when the Switch is dominating the PS4. Nintendo Life should do the same when the roles are reversed. Don't be hiding details and pretending that the Switch is dominating when it clearly is not.
@Matthew010 Yeah, I know, it isn't my first language too. His comment was just incredibly stupid.
Is Nintendolife on Nintendo's payroll now?
@Elanczewski
Do you mind if i felt dissatisfied for this week sales ?
Xbox One version of Monster Hunter World couldn't sell 3,200 units lol.
@Equinox yea those PS4 numbers are pathetic 😉😉
@Anti-Matter don't be upset with the sales this week. It will be better for Nintendo next week. Don't be upset. Just try and bring yourself together and punish your PS4 😉
It's irritating that Monster Hunter XX is sitting at #20, taunting all the Switch owners who do not live in Japan. It has sold 200,000 copies just in Japan, wonder how many more they could sell in other regions?!
@Anti-Matter I'm rather surprised that you wrote about "revenge" and "kicking PS4 butt". Sorry, I'm just fed up with these "console wars" posts on the internet.
Hahahaha this "news" and the lack of the actual chart! NSlife still up to their old tricks I see!
@rennandovale No. I’m actually excited about a modded Monster Hunter. It’s the only way I’ll put more time into the series. But you know, keep the personal insults coming.
@nitrolink
"Xbox One version of Monster Hunter World couldn't sell 3,200 units lol."
Eh ?! Really ?
So Monster Hunter on PS4 outsells the rest of the top 10 put together and the PS4 outsells all the other systems put together....Anson NL that means Nintendo are dominating? Very poor.
@Equinox I wouldn't call the PS4 numbers pathetic but the switch numbers super amazing
I think its just the new guy trying out his own way to post the news. I dont agree with it, as charts are very helpful, but I wouldn't say NL as a whole is trying to spin the news. Just this guy. Im sure any of the veteran authors wouldve put up the charts.
Blame the author, not the site, I guess?
@Anti-Matter Xbox one version not selling that good makes you happy. I'm happy for you man.
Show the charts in a logical manner Nintendo Life.
@thesilverbrick Sort of. It's sold well if you take it in the context that it was a console release. Compared to portable versions the sales are about 1/3 at best compared to past flagship titles in Japan. Even the non-flagship titles have outsold it by a pretty good margin of sales.
Really most of the sales have been redistributed between the regions and Japan has shown us that even on a platform with more users they still much prefer the portable versions vs the console versions. Having 33 million more potential users probably helped outside of Japan as well.
If anything this bodes well for a portable MH being developed (but not being released outside of Japan).
@Equinox Ahh, can't tell if you're trolling me or not haha. 70 million worldwide sales with about 9% coming from one country (Japan). I'd say that's fine. We all know Japan loves handhelds. I really hope Switch continues to do well there, otherwise mobile will be the only other option. Does that satisfy you?
I'm not a big follower of Monster Hunter but...
How would this have been if Capcom had the foresight to target the big Monster Hunter game at Switch, instead of other consoles. Actually, it could have targeted it at Switch with ports to PS4, Xbox, and PC. I'm not blaming them, it would have been quite a leap of faith to trust that Nintendo's gamble would pay off, but the shift in numbers here would be pretty crazy, right?
Outside Japan, I think there would have been a boost in interest as well, as it would be a big fish in a smaller pond on the Switch.
Will be interesting what kind of Monster Hunter game comes to Switch now...
@Ernest_The_Crab Yeah, I was moreso thinking those were high numbers in terms of console game sales in Japan. Seeing as Splatoon 2 made news as the first game in quite some time to break 2 million sales in Japan on a home console, seeing these numbers for Monster Hunter World makes me think that in a few short weeks there will be another 2 million seller.
Week after week @SLIGEACH_EIRE posts the full charts and tons of people in the comments, myself included, ask why this website cannot just do that themselves. You guys finally listened to feedback and added the list of the 26 gba games but it seems like you refuse to even answer why you don’t post the full charts. @dom please reply so we at least know our complaints/feedback is at the bare minimum seen.
@Anti-Matter
Haha. I don't see the Xbox One version on the chart!
@aaronsullivan There are a couple of issues.
The boost in Switch sales would be limited at best as in Japan they're still ironing out their supply issues (most stock seems to have been sent out to the other regions). The console base is also still fairly small (well I guess half of Xbox One global sales isn't small). Both of those aspects would have limited the number of copies Capcom could sell on the platform.
Well there's no real rush. Capcom has some pretty scalable frameworks available so it most likely won't take them all THAT long to make a Switch MH game after seeing how popular the console is. Seriously, they managed to get an originally PS3 developed MH game (which was also a mainline title) to work on the Wii of all things. The power difference was much more extreme back then than it is now not to mention the Wii was a notoriously difficult console to develop for.
They can afford to wait since they don't have any serious competition in that genre yet on the Switch (see God Eater).
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
I read both the NL article and yours, and you win.
Where are the charts?
I really don't care one way or the other. Monster Hunter doesn't interest me all that much. It scored high on Metacritic but hasn't come close to topping Breath of the Wild or Super Mario Odyssey. (Be honest: Did anyone expect it to? lol )
By contrast, games like Splatoon didn't score all that high yet is number 3 after being out for months.
The sheer number of Switch titles on the list is amazing, even if they didn't outsell Monster Hunter World combined. Breath of the Wild didn't sell as many copies there total (so far) but I still consider it to be one of my best gaming experiences ever. /shrug
I betcha if there was a Switch or PS Vita port along with it, the PS4 port would get own. Reason why PS4 version is selling is cause the Japanese had no other choice but to get that one. We all know Japanese love their Monster Hunter on the go and had a Switch port exist, no one would bother with the lacking PS4 version.
Clearly there's a Switch shortage! Microsony paid Capcom to keep MHW off the Switch obviously! (Which I'm enjoying on XBOX ONE! It really is lacking though, can't play it on the crapper, or while trying to drive my car to work, for shame Capcom!)
@PuppyToucher So you'd rather a cold list of figures instead of a news story that actually suits the tone and style of the website? Perhaps we'll try and combine the two next week.
@Dom I want both. You can combine them. You can write a news story and also include a list.
Looks like MHW helped sell a decent amount of systems
@Dom The charts help us understand where the Japanese industry stands as a whole on a weekly basis. Regardless of the outcome, its still news that we need, and like, to hear. Even though we are a Nintendo site, keeping the format that you used where u just talk about nintendo figures, shows to everyone that the site is trying to hide and spin the hard truth, and that makes us look bad. Yah, sony had a killer week (congrats to them!) but knowing ALL the numbers puts things in perspective for us Nintendo fans, and we need to know.
We had that format for years now, theres no need to change this now. Please consider posting everything like we used to. If other sites can do it still, so can we =)
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Thanks.
@retro_player_22 That's true, I think Sony paid Capcom for exclusivity on this one...but I don't care so long as they decide to localize MHXX...hopefully
Let's not get too dramatic about a set of sales figures. I'm sure we can do both next week, then everyone will be happy.
Don't understand why people wanna turn this into console fan boy war.
Good sales for PS4 and MHW. I expect MHW to hit 2.5m max in Japan which will be way lower than 3DS and PSP versions.
In no way is Nintendo dominating the sales charts...
@Xenoguner "Even though we are a Nintendo site, keeping the format that you used where u just talk about nintendo figures, shows to everyone that the site is trying to hide and spin the hard truth, and that makes us look bad."
This article clearly states that Monster Hunter: World is the number one, and the PS4 topped the hardware sales. You worry too much, and it seems as though you tried too hard to spin the facts. As @Dom said, don't get too dramatic about this. Starting from next week, articles about weekly sales in Japan should include the lists.
@westman98 Seven Nintendo games in the top 10 list isn't enough?
@Shellcore do you mean for the year or week? For the week is pretty meaningless.
@westman98 in no way? Count the skus from each company.
@faint Monster Hunter literally outsold everything else. I'm sure Nintendo will be dominating the charts a month from now, but not now...
@westman98 Yes, but it's only one game. Monster Hunter: World is the number one, but Nintendo games still dominate the charts (take most positions in the charts).
@Dom thank you for the reply and I think having the article and the chart for next week is a great idea!
There's nothing wrong with the headline people. Switch software as a whole did dominate the chart despite MH. Speaking of, and no one is going to point this out but the Switch selling close to 50,000 units without a new game is impressive.
You spin the news right now baby right now, lifke a record baby right now right now ~
@KryptoKrunch Not really, since MHW on ps4 literally outsold everything else combined.
Cya
Raziel-chan
Without the charts, the article is pointless - a top 20 list needs to be listed. (Thanks Sligeach)
We’re all big enough to not get upset when the PS4 is dominating - so feel free to report without spin, like journalists should. A better story for me would be how sensational MHW sales are (1.2M in a week is incredible!), and how we want Capcom to show the Switch some MH love too.
That’s my two cents worth.
omg...monster hunter world is hitting pokemon numbers.... Thats a huge boost for PS4 and lost opportunity for Nintendo. I remember PSP was outselling DS for weeks after MH.
I wish I had saved up enough for a PS4 so I could play monster hunter. Oh well
@1UP_MARIO @nitrolink Monster Hunter World is exclusive to PS4 in Japan. That's why the Xbox version doesn't show up in the charts (though to be fair, I doubt it would've made a difference anyway)
@Dom To be fair, it's an article about the ''weekly Japanese charts'', that's what you called it at least, and it doesn't include the actual charts...
Okay, so we've added in the chart information. Now let's all breath deeply and go about our days
About what I expected for MH. A little better, actually. I guessed 800k to 1m. I knew it was going to be several million lower than previous entries, simply because it's not on a portable platform. But that's still really good for being a console entry. It made those lost sales up in the west so, tit for tat really.
I'm also very surprised to see Switch sell that many consoles without a major game this week. That thing just continues to sell well, big game or not.
I'm betting by the time the next MH game releases on Switch (and I think it's pretty much a given the next one will be either a Portable 5th or a multiplat version of a new 5th gen entry) it'll be late 2019, with an install base of 40+ million. That thing is going to sell crazy numbers. I bet it'll hit 3 million in Japan alone like 3DS entries, and do 2 million in the west minimum (even MH4U did 1 mil in the west, and after World added 1-2 mil new western players, I'm sure at least half the new players will buy the next Switch entry, plus new Nintendo players it brings in from being higher budget similar to how World brought in new players on other platforms). The next one on Switch could do 5 million just on Switch alone. Alternatively, a multiplat version with PS4/X1/NSW could even chase 10 mil... well, maybe not that much. Cause there would be overlap- maybe more like 7-8. World is the best thing that could have happened for the series, and tbh, Nintendo too. They needed this game to get more people paying attention to it, so when they include Switch for the next one, it benefits from all those new players added into the fold.
Well done Sony. You are having an amazing January. Besides gaming, I love to draw, paint and go to the gym. I just don't have the time to have multiple game consoles these days. Knocked that on the head after the PS2 era.
@Dom Oh phew. I just got here and read through the comments thinking folk had lost their marbles lol. Your summary and a list is win win
hotdamn, the XBONE X is certainly climbing.
Funny when you consider that in Japan, X represents death and this version has 2 X's.... XD
I hope Nintendo has an impressive E3. Nothing that I'm excited for yet this year.
@Anti-Matter Ah you drew a purple themed one this time. Nice.
@Dom Thank you for adding in the charts. I think it is possible to have a fun article and present the facts clearly as well. Now to work on that spin, eh? But good on Nintendo for keeping up with Sony in a crazy week!
@Obitokamui64 I'm excited for a few titles this year like Dragon Quest, Valkyrie Chronicles, Fire Emblem and No More Heroes, but the rumour going around before the Labo thing was that Nintendo was going to announce the 'new way to play' that week and then was going to have a full direct in February where they would announce new titles. So perhaps there will be something exciting to you announced soon?
What was with the vanilla shade throw towards the PS4! 😄
Let's see if World has legs.
@roboshort
Hopefully so. I'm not worried yet. Still very happy with my switch being a splatoon 2 machine.
Nice to see Fifa on Switch in that top 20! Might hit 100k in Japan on Switch, without being blockbuster figures surely it's a massive improvement over previous Nintendo iterations?
Not bad at all when you consider this is MH.
Anyway, this is what really grap my attention.
18. [NSW] FIFA 18 – 3,720 / 78,169
20. [NSW] Monster Hunter XX – 3,162 / 207,939
Fifa18 charted on Japan and Switch owners are kinda sending a message here to Capcom with XX.
@Ernest_The_Crab Good point about the limited supply of Switch consoles. Maybe wait a couple months and stockpile. Still, it is clearly a console seller in Japan judging from PS4 sales. But that would have been better for Nintendo than Capcom.
I do wonder at the attach rate in Japan... I mean, Monster Hunter has been traditionally strong as a portable title there where console releases have been disappointing, right? That in combination with the worldwide user base for Switch that, again, has limited competition for large games right now, might have been real competition in numbers... but now I'm not looking at numbers, just thinking it out.
