The Media Create chart results are out for Japan, and it was a bit of a storming week for Nintendo, with Sony also enjoying a boost. The source of this is mostly the Dragon Quest series, which is absolutely massive business in Japan.
Unsurprisingly Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age leads in software, with figures very similar to those in Famitsu magazine. The 3DS version outsold the PS4 equivalent, with the two combining to surpass two million sales; we can't help but wonder how much the Switch could have benefitted from its version, too, but it's currently in limbo.
Elsewhere in the software top 20 we can see positive continuing sales for Splatoon 2, while Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaires' Conspiracy is also ticking along nicely. The results are below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [3DS] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 1,148,888 (New)
- [PS4] Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Square Enix, 07/29/17) – 950,315 (New)
- [NSW] Splatoon 2 (Nintendo, 07/21/17) – 105,326 (753,411)
- [3DS] Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and The Millionaires’ Conspiracy (Level-5, 07/20/17) – 24,491 (95,358)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 13,841 (601,869)
- [3DS] Hey! Pikmin (Nintendo, 07/13/17) – 11,900 (99,394)
- [PS4] Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (Square Enix, 07/13/17) – 8,158 (127,971)
- [3DS] Sumikko Gurashi: Koko, Doko Nan Desu? (Nippon Columbia, 07/20/17) – 8,027 (28,910)
- [PSV] Kenka Bancho Otome: My Honey of Absolute Perfection (Spike Chunsoft, 07/27/17) – 6,931 (New)
- [NSW] Arms (Nintendo, 06/16/17) – 5,959 (183,945)
- [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Limited Edition Included) (Nintendo, 03/03/17) – 5,803 (548,819)
- [PS4] Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy (Bandai Namco, 07/27/17) – 5,626 (New)
- [PS4] Gundam Versus (Limited Edition Included) (Bandai Namco, 07/06/17) – 5,294 (149,137)
- [3DS] Pokemon Sun / Pokemon Moon (Nintendo, 11/18/16) – 5,283 (3,300,384)
- [PS4] Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (SIE, 07/27/17) – 4,879 (New)
- [PSV] Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition (SIE, 03/19/15) – 3,867 (1,184,150)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf Amiibo+ (Nintendo, 11/23/16) – 3,607 (208,705)
- [PSV] Wagamama High Spec (Limited Edition Included) (iMel, 07/27/17) – 3,062 (New)
- [PSV] The Fruit of Grisaia: Side Episode (Prototype, 07/27/17) – 3,052 (New)
- [PSV] Hiiro no Kakera: Omoi Iro no Kioku (Limited Edition Included) (Idea Factory, 07/27/17) – 2,914 (New)
Moving on to hardware, we see the New 2DS LL (XL) go into top-spot; it's safe to assume this was greatly helped by the DQXI limited edition model pictured at the top of this article. Elsewhere the Switch maintains great numbers to edge out the DQXI surge for the PS4 (Sony's system also had a special edition hardware release). The results are below with last week's sales in brackets.
- New 2DS LL – 110,963 (17,717)
- Switch – 89,314 (98,999)
- PlayStation 4 – 82,368 (23,841)
- New 3DS LL – 26,587 (13,108)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 10,988 (7,037)
- PlayStation Vita – 4,967 (4,545)
- 2DS – 3,680 (2,300)
- New 3DS – 1,370 (1,020)
- Wii U – 142 (176)
- PlayStation 3 – 121 (142)
- Xbox One – 94 (77)
A positive week for Nintendo, undoubtedly. The only thing that would have made it better, unfortunately, would have been the Switch version of Dragon Quest XI arriving at the same time; maybe it'll still make an entrance eventually.

Looking good Nintendo!
They aren't dropping 3DS any time soon with those numbers.
Dragon Quest is killing it. Wonder how well it will do when it hits the Switch. Good sales for sure.
And no one is surprised.
Switch shortages my backside. It's a 50/50 split in terms of software in the top 20 from Nintendo/Sony. DQ really is a colossus in Japan.
I'd like to interview the 94 XB1 buyers. I wonder if most of them are western transplants.
What stuns me the most is that Nintendo managed to sell just ~5000 less Switches than PS4s during the launch of a freaking Dragon Quest game on the PS4, while nothing new released on the Switch.
Splatoon 2 sales declined 84% over the previous (launch) week. Switch sales only declined ~10% over the previous week.
Looks like Nintendo is finally beginning to meet demand for the Switch in Japan.
Sooo...any arm chair ceo still adamant they should ditch the 3DS and focus on Switch?
Over 142k for the 3DS, 93k for PS4, and 89k for Switch. I don't think we've seen hardware numbers in Japan like that for a long, long time.
Also I don't think the Switch needed Dragon Quest at this point in time. Wouldn't have done much for hardware sales other than further constrain supply.
Loving the 2DS/3DS support. Down with Switch! We want a real successor to Wii U. Nintendo branded Steam machine with 1st party titles as well. Make it happen Nintendo, and end the western AAA 3rd party support drought.
lol wut ^
3DS is still the king. Long live the king.
I remember the 3DS launch well and how it was "doomed" by so many. That little machine has proved to be quite a workhorse after all these years. Incredible numbers.
@gatorboi352 I know you are going to be torn to shreds with this comment, but I totally agree with you. The Switch is literally just WiiU 2.0 and the only reason it looks like its a hot item is because Nintendo makes about 1,000 every month to distribute in the entire US.
@ajcismo The 3DS launch was terrible. Don't you remember that it had a massive price cut just a few months into its life?
The current success is thanks to the later models, especially 2DS and New 2DS XL.
Nintendo 3DS is my fav handheld of all time ... even after buying the switch I still play with my 3DS more <3
July 2017 hardware sales:
Switch: 246,000 (2DS + DQXI launch)
3DS: 250,000 (Splatoon 2 launch + more supply)
PS4: 190,000 (DQXI launch)
July 2017 was the best non-holiday month for hardware sales in a long, long time.
The last 2 weeks in particular have been spectacular. The Switch saw its two best week of sales since launch (and hardware sales only dropped 10% week-over-week from Splatoon 2's launch week), the 3DS saw it's best non-holiday week of sales since October 2013, and the PS4 saw its biggest non-holiday week of sales excluding the launch of the PS4 Slim.
And lol at the people who think the 2DS/3DS selling 142,000 units this week means the Switch is dead/dying...
Amazing hold for Switch even without DQXI release. Hopefully SE now announces the release date.
Sony is trying but there is no stopping the Switch machine. Japanese developers will be silly not to develop for it. Also, Splatoon2 attach rate is crazily high.
Amazing numbers all around btw. DQ is a beast there so no surprise. 3DS keeps delivering the numbers.
@XCWarrior hey man, no worries. We all have opinions. Ours just happen to align on this issue.
@crackafreeze Nintendo has this weird knack of being ok with super successful in just Japan.
Not doing so hot in the West? Meh, says Ninty.
@westman98 Seriously is pretty crazy. Proof that both DQ and Splatoon are beasts. Switch will be damn fine.
@XCWarrior not true at all. Distify said that Nintendo distributes more Switch consoles in USA than in Japan. Looks to me that neither u nor gatorwhatever have Switch.
@westman98 "And lol at the people who think the 2DS/3DS selling 142,000 units this week means the Switch is dead"
LOL at you if you think these 2DS/3DS numbers means Nintendo thinks they need to discontinue that line of products any time soon.
@JJ286 what does "Looks to me that neither u nor gatorwhatever have Switch." have to do with " Distify said that Nintendo distributes more Switch consoles in USA than in Japan" exactly?
Also, of course there'd be more Switches distributed in the US vs. Japan. US is a multiple times bigger market than Japan.
@gatorboi352 exactly. Which is why this assumption that the Switch is hot cause of limiting supplies is wrong. Switch is hot because:
1. Has good games.
2. Virtually no1 have WiiU, meaning ports are new games for many.
3. The concept.
4. People just love the console and are recommending it to ppl.
Plus since when we have started to fight between 3DS and Switch? Both are Nintendo anyway.
To me the most impressive is the Switch hold so high against a brutal competition.
I'm really amazed.
@westman98 Really good point, actually.
Where are the U.S. numbers??
@JJ286 wait when did i say Switch is only "hot because of supply shortages"?
@Frank90 same here! I just don't get how can ppl said Switch is failing.
@zeldazero thats NPD and guess they aren't available yet.
@gatorboi352 not u but warrior did. I mention u cause u look happy Switch is "failing" but it ain't actually. Against insane competition it hold a lot.
@Iggy-Koopa Nor should they, the Switch isn't even a half a year old. I'd say around this time next year, once the majority of those who want a Switch have one, is when the 3DS will really start to wane down.
@JJ286 also, the "war between 3DS and Switch" started when all the early Switch adopters started complaining about "bring (fill in the blank game) to Switch instead!" and "stop wasting resources on 3DS instead of Switch!"
@gatorboi352
Did I ever suggest Nintendo should discontinue the 2DS/3DS anytime soon?? It's a great product for casuals who don't want to spend $300 trying to find a Switch. Using 3DS sales during the launch of a juggernaut IP to paint a "Switch is going down" narrative is ridiculous.
Nintendo seems to have sustained an increase in both supply and demand for the Switch after Splatoon 2's launch. Let's see if that is also the case for the 3DS after the launch of DQXI, or if this was just a temporary DQXI sales spike. Having two Nintendo platforms selling well in Japan would be excellent; it hasn't happened since the Wii/DS and SNES/GB era.
It's a Nintendomination.
@JJ286 Could have been an argument in the beginning but now between Mario Kart, Zelda, Splatoon, Arms, and upcoming Kingdom Battle (which totally has totally behind it right now), Odyssey, a portable Skyrim, FE Warriors and Xenoblade...there's a lot there you can't get anywhere else. And remember, end of the year is ONLY 9 months into the Switch lifespan. They can totally keep it up too. No one is really seriously talking about yet how MASSIVE a Pokemon main game on a console will be. If they can release that beast by holiday 2018, Switch will be huge. And by that point, any quality AAA 3rd party games sprinkled in will only cement it.
@zeldazero
The Switch sold 1.572 million in the US as of the end of June. US sales from July aren't available yet, though I personally expect the Switch to reach ~1.8 million units sold in the US by the end of July. It will depend of supply.
The Switch sold 1.040 million in Japan as of the end of June. It has now sold 1.286 million in Japan as of the end of July.
@GrailUK - for the sake of discussion.....hasn't Nintendo already dropped the 3DS. It will have a couple more years of life but what is Nintendo doing to extend that? What new games are Nintendo developing? It is being supported by 3rd party games that may never make it out of Japan and a couple remakes by non Nintendo developers (Pokémon & Samus Returns). After that what is coming west and is Nintendo making any of it? I'd say Nintendo has moved on already and 3DS owners are feasting on left overs and a few Japanese 3rd parties that will take the last bit of money they can before jumping to the new generation.
That 2DS LL Limited Edition pictured at the top of the article looks sexy as!
@gatorboi352 "a real Wii U successor" as in, devolution to homestuck boxes gathering dust inbetween weekends/vacations because many adult gamers' disposable income is a deity thriving on temporal sacrifices? I beg to differ. If you simply want more specs, wait until Super Switch 64 Advance XL - or whatchamacallit when the time comes - gets a streamlined Pascal and 8 Gb RAM. If you simply want a PS4/XBone clone, mail Nintendo your business plan on how the hay they're supposed to sell it in the market saturated with PS4 and XBone themselves.
And if you literally want a Wii U successor... it could be an even longer wait - after Nintendo couldn't sell the concept for four years, they'll probably revisit it in a couple generations at earliest, if ever. At least 3DS happening years after Virtual Boy is a ray of hope here. XD
@gatorboi352 to be fair, Nintendo should just make two versions. Switch ain't just WiiU successor is both. Of course they will not abandon 3DS cause is still hot but Switch will take over everything eventually.
@Dang69 thanks! Thats what I'm saying, trying to paint Switch as "failure" is very naive. It will be a huge success.
Would love to see the 3DS/2DS crack 70 million worldwide, so close!
@gatorboi352
Geez...
Such a Nintendo Hater you are.
Your comments just a So FAKE about Nintendo 2DS XL/ 3DS XL and Switch.
Give it up, dude !
Nintendo will despair your wicked wish to see the fall down of Nintendo.
And don't tell me it was a different opinion !
It was a MESS !!
That is quite possibly my favourite design for 3DS/2DS. So slick!
Congratulations to Nintendo, Square-Enix and Sony for these sale numbers! Can't wait for this game (hopefully all three versions) to go worldwide!
@westman98 Switch has done well. Let's not forget, however, how long the PS4 been out for...still outsold Switch.
@Shellcore
Both the PS4 and Switch are selling great, but to see the Switch sell close 90,000 units the week after Splatoon 2's release is incredible.
Switch sales only dropped ~10% week-over-week while Splatoon 2 sales dropped 84% week-over-week. Despite DQXI being the biggest PS4 game ever, the PS4 only managed to sell ~5,000 units more than the Switch, which is a testament to how good Switch sales are.
@Gerbwmu I don't know if I am honest lol. You seem very quick to label Metroid Returns, Pokémon, PersonaQ2 and DQXI as 'left overs'. If they are left overs, then the meal must have been incredible! 6 years of life would probably attest to that. However, Nintendo are clearly in a position where the 3DS is not going anywhere anytime soon, so I would take 3rd parties and out sourcing to be a positive step in prolonging it's life.
@JJ286 I'm being sarcastic when I said 1,000. I guess I should have said 10 per month. But they don't make enough, and they do it on purpose because they want the free publicity so when they release a new batch every couple of weeks, all the video game websites do the free advertising for them. It has zero to do with part supply issues. If you believe it does, just get "Gullible" tattooed on your forehead.
i'm surprised that switch isn't down to the usual 20k
@gatorboi352 I don't want that! The Switch is everything I would want a console to be!
Had the Switch version of DQXI being release simultaneously as well, both 3DS and PS4 would had kiss their numbers good-bye.
@GrailUK - 3rd party is great for prolonging the life and it is a great thing for 3DS owners, but beyond that what will come and for how long. Also the question was about Nintendo leaving it behind and from that standpoint it really does look like Nintendo has. Samus and Pokémon are both remakes by non 1st party developers and at this point we don't know if Q2 will make it west. So is Nintendo continuing support or are they leaving it behind for 3rd parties to keep afloat?
So at least 2Mil people skipped work and school? I swear they should have just hung a sign that said "Japan is closed until further notice".
@westman98 "It's a great product for casuals"
Hardly the case. Have you seen the 3DS software line up?
@nhSnork with the continued success of the DS line of true portable consoles, the Switch isn't necessary. Everyone playing switch effectively uses it as a portable anyways.
How about this: Just shift the narrative (talking to Nintendo here) on Switch and position it as the next DS or successor to DS line and come out with a true home console successor. Half the people i know with switches haven't even taken their docks out of the box ffs.
@gatorboi352
The upcoming 3DS lineup is by no means bad, but outside of Metroid Samus Returns, FE Echoes, and some niche Atlus games, I'd say the 3DS software lineup is for those who haven't yet picked a 3DS up in the last 6 years.
Stuff like Miitopia, Hey Pikmin, and Monster Hunter Stories seem to target kids who can't handle hardcore JRPGs, a real Pikmim game, or a Monster Hunter game. The biggest 3DS game this year is going to be an enhanced version of last year's Pokémon entry. The enhanced version of Yokai Watch 2 will also be localized this year as well.
@Gerbwmu We need a new direct lol!
According to Famitsu (not Media Create), the Switch sold ~105,000 units last week, which is more than what it sold during Splatoon 2's launch week (~102,000).
Insanity...
@westman98 Miitopia was 5th best selling game in the UK in single platform charts. Have you even seen the game?
http://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/uk/latest/index_test.jsp&ct=110032
@Mahe
Okay?? What does that have anything to do with what I have said.
Miitopia sold decently well in the UK given the 3DS's position in that market. I'm not denying that. Let's see how good it's legs are.
@westman98 What you said means you have a complete lack of understanding about what Miitopia is, let alone how it has performed.
So either you're completely ignorant about the game, or you're trying to downplay the success of new 2DS games.
@Tsurii - you are right, that was a poor choice of words. Still the point being no 1st party major Nintendo games being made.
@Mahe
Miitopia is a quirky and humorous JRPG with Miis. It sold okay in the UK.
Anything incorrect with this??
You're the one claiming Splatoon 2 is a flop because it couldn't usurp Crash Bandicoot in the UK, but now you are trying to tell me Miitopia is somehow a big deal even though its launch sales were well, well below 20% of Splatoon 2's launch sales in the UK.
@GrailUK yes a direct would help a lot on all fronts
@IceClimbers Yeah. These numbers are only seen around holidays in recent years. Three consoles having that kind of numbers at once is crazy.
Dragon Quest is serious business in Japan, it seems! 2 million sales is really insane.
Splatoon is no slouch either - It has been, what, two weeks since its release and its sitting on 750k. Maybe it will reach a million in Japan before a month!
@westman98 "I'd say the 3DS software lineup is for those who haven't yet picked a 3DS up in the last 6 years.
Stuff like Miitopia, Hey Pikmin, and Monster Hunter Stories seem to target kids who can't handle hardcore JRPGs, a real Pikmim game, or a Monster Hunter game."
That's what you wrote. Are you trying to change the story now?
Also, that result is surprisingly good for Miitopia exactly because it is a quirky niche RPG in the UK market. And it's just another game in the vast 2DS game catalog.
But Splatoon 2 is a Switch tentpole release. It is without a doubt Switch's biggest exclusive game, and will remain so for many months to come, possibly even longer. That in itself tells you that Switch and Splatoon 2 aren't doing all that well outside Japan.
@westman98
I don't think that's a fair way to look at it. Miitopia is more of a successor to tomodachi Life. Hey Pikminnis what it is because traditional Pikmin would be tough to make work on 3DS(Nintendo did actually prototype it earlier in the 3DS lifespan). Can you imagine playing the original on 2DS or N3DS? Maybe on the XL models it might work...And Monster Hunter already has three main series games outside Japan. A spinoff is hardly some insult to the hardcore fans
Sept 8th: Monster Hunter Stories

Early 2018 Radiant Historia Perfect Chronology
Early 2018: Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey Redux
2018 Sushin Striker
2018 Dragon Quest XI
2018: Jake Hunter: Ghost of the dusk
Persona Q2, Yokai Watch 3, Snack World, Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2, Monster Hunter Double Cross are all likely localizations for 2018.
There are plenty of indies hitting too. Chicken Wiggle, Creeping Terror, Timespinners, Shakedown Hawaii, Treasurenaughts, Omori,
We got several mon games, dungeon crawlers, a hybrid RPG/Board game/card game, A metriodvania and a actual Metriod game, a visual novel, platformer, beat em ups, a mystery dungeon game, a couple more traditional RPGS, Kirby, a action hunting game, and a a puzzle adventure game.
That seems a likema varied and certainly like it has several options for a "core" gamer even outside Atlus games.
@Mahe
"But Splatoon 2 is a Switch tentpole release. It is without a doubt Switch's biggest exclusive game, and will remain so for many months to come, possibly even longer. That in itself tells you that Switch and Splatoon 2 aren't doing all that well outside Japan"
2 and 2 = 27 now apparently.
@XCWarrior so I can take my wiiu anywhere? Awesome! Wish I had figured out the wiiu was a portable the last three and a half years I've owned one.
@Frank90 At this moment the only thing preventing people to buy a Switch is it stock. Who wants to buy one are not actually looking at the competitors right now.
@Mahe wut? Where did you get the us sales for splatoon 2? I wasn't aware they had been released yet.
Believe it or not, there are some people out there who don't think Switch is doing well. That Nintendo are restricting supply to hide that there's no demand.
I know, I know,madness, but some people still believe the Earth is flat.
Those are superb numbers BTW, given lack of DQ. Nintendo will be well pleased with this. Switch is taking off and 3DS has enough life to last through next year and keep the money coming in. Especially given the relatively low development cost on that format. Most of Nintendo's resources are moving onto Switch now but they've a healthy diet of remakes, ports and third-party support. It's a great machine for kids, casuals and Nintendo fans who can't afford to upgrade yet.
Reaching 67 million sales is a real achievement, and the attach rate of 5 games per machine is consistent with previous handhelds. In fact in years to come people will really appreciate the Machine that kept Nintendo in the game while Wii U bombed, and despite the rise of mobile gaming.
@Tsurii There is a urban myth that the DQ releases were supposedly moved to release on the weekend because all of sudden too many people were calling out "sick" or whatever on release day and complaints were made because of it.
I think its great. My current job has no gamers but me in my department so it gets a little lonely; I like hearing about droves of people descending upon stores to get the next great game. ...Well now that I don't have to work it any more that is.
@Mahe
I stand by what I wrote regarding Miitopia. It is a quirky and humorous JRPG targeted at casuals that sold. The game sold okay in the UK.
Splatoon 2 is the Switches biggest exclusive in Japan only, and Switch sales are 45-50% higher in the US alone than in Japan. Of course its selling well outside of Japan. Zelda, Mario Kart, and Arms are much bigger games in the west than in Japan, so Nintendo shipped more hardware to the west to satiate the higher demand, and thus the Switch sold through significantly more hardware in the west. Splatoon 2 will be the only major Switch release that sells more in Japan than in the US or Europe.
@faint https://www.reddit.com/r/wiiu/comments/1ugu7z/on_the_road_with_the_wii_u/
Owned and you're welcome.
These numbers prove that the 3DS will be sticking around for quite some time. It's nothing short of incredible that a 6-year-old console is still selling THAT well. I think we're looking at no less than two more years of strong 3DS support.
@westman98
What u talking about, UK is the 3rd biggest market for Nintendo in EU, only Germany and France are bigger,, switch is also the 3rd best selling in UK compared to other country's, ppl beat down on the UK cause Nintendo aren't number 1 here, that belongs to Sony then Microsoft, but Ninty hardware does sell here
@EDF
I have never denied that the Switch is selling okay in the UK. Not bad by any means, but not spectacular. Crash Bandicoot Trilogy has sold as many copies on the PS4 as the Switch itself, so I think it's ridiculous to suggest that Splatoon 2 "flopped outside of Japan" because Crash, the UK's fastest selling selling exclusive of the year, is beating it.
@gatorboi352 lol by that definition my 50 inch flat screen is also a portable.
@westman98
Lol, I think you answer the wrong person, I ain't ever mentioned Splatoon, tbh I don't care how many it sells anywhere in the world, but good luck to it and Nintendo, Anyways switch had the 3rd best launch in all of Europe, 80 thousand compared to Spain who is a decent supporter of Ninty hardware only selling 40k, and don't get me started on Greece who had their best ever Ninty hardware launch with a massive 2k lol, having said all that it's lifetime sales that count and that's way off yet, enjoy the ride though dude
@westman98
Do we not get weekly reports like Japan?
@zeldazero
US sales are monthly. Those US sales I posted were actually leaked Switch LTD sales figures as of June 2017 from the NPD.
@gatorboi352
"We want a real successor to Wii U". Speak for yourself. I'm not sure the market for an undercooked mishmash of ideas that flops badly is that huge.
@XCWarrior
"The Switch is literally just WiiU 2.0"
The word 'literally' taking a bad kicking, here.
The only thing negative I can say is that the Switch games seems a bit underwhelming. I mean, we have Zelda which was a launch title and Mario 8 Deluxe, which I guess didn't need much work. So, it is a bit sad that no third party games, be it AAA or not, are on the list.
Delighted Hey! Pikmin is gonna hit 100k sold in Japan, now let's see the real deal, Pikmin 4 on Nintendo Switch...
@Superzone13 A lot can change in a year. I'll say that the 3DS will have good support up to 2018, but it needs a good Mario game. I think is time for Nintendo to release something like Mario Galaxy for the 3DS or Super Mario 3D Land successor.
@gatorboi352 The fact that I had to read a wall of text on how to properly get a WiiU going in my car should say enough about how "portable" it is.
Let me tell you how to take your Switch out as a portable:
1. Remove from dock.
2. Start playing games.
@maceng
All of Nintendo's internal studios have moved in from the 3DS. Don't expect any brand new Mario platformers on the 3DS.
@westman98 "Splatoon 2 is the Switches biggest exclusive in Japan only"
Do tell me, what bigger exclusives does Switch have outside Japan than Splatoon 2? There's Mario, and... uh, that's that.
We are looking at potentially 12 months or more for Switch where the big exclusives are Splatoon 2 and Mario and nothing else.
@westman98 Considering Super Mario Maker just came out 8 months ago, I'm sure nobody was expecting a brand new Mario platformer so soon after that.
@Mahe He replied to @maceng who expects that.
"That in itself tells you that Switch and Splatoon 2 aren't doing all that well outside Japan."
You seem to love to jump to conclusions. Also, you're wrong about the Switch. It has been doing very well outside Japan.
@westman98 That would be a mistake on Nintendo's part. You make a (good) Mario game, and easily sell 10MM copies.
These are good numbers, but I have to admit I'm a little worried.
Sony has already announced that DQXI is coming to the PS4 in the west, but no news on the 3DS version.
I am really hoping that Sony does not toss some money into Square Enix's face and offer to be the publisher in NA and Europe so they can keep the game from Nintendo and off the 3DS and Switch outside of Japan.
If Sony pulls that BS, then I'll miss out on Dragon Quest XI because I own an Xbox One, and I will never get a PS4.
Come on Nintendo, get the rights to this game!
@Mahe
Splatoon 2 is not the Switch's biggest exclusive worldwide because Zelda BOTW, MK8D, and soon Mario Odyssey have or will outsell Splatoon 2 outside of Japan.
Miitopia and FE Echoes are the only two 3DS games of 2017 thus far that have had anywhere close to decent launch sales in the UK market, and it's the only major European territory where the Switch wont outsell the Xbox One. In other words, only using the UK as an indicator of Nintendo's entire market presence in the west is quite misleading.
@maceng
No Mario platformer has ever been released during the 8th year of any Nintendo platform's lifecycle, and that will change anytime soon. And no, a 2018 Mario platformer on the 3DS will not sell 10 million copies.
@Mahe "We are looking at potentially 12 months or more for Switch where the big exclusives are Splatoon 2 and Mario and nothing else"
ARMS, Mario + Rabbids, and Xenoblade 2 say hi. Zelda and Mario Kart, as well as the upcoming Pokken and FE Warriors will be huge draws as well despite not being exclusive as people don't care about the other versions. There's one big game a month with indies and third parties in between.
Nintendo sold over 200,000 units of hardware in one week in Japan and use are fighting about it... Flippen heck, this is great guys, just enjoy it whatever piece of hardware you own or intend to own, it's good news all round as far as I'm concerned!
@NinNin I'm definitely no expecting that. First, i was talking aboout a 3D mario; secondly, I said in order for Nintendo to keep interest. This year is already filled with many good alternatives (Pokemon, Metroid!, Miitopa, Ever Oasis, so if Nintendo really wants to keep things interesting for the 3DS, a 3D Mario game can fill in for the 1st quarter of next year
@westman98 "No Mario platformer has ever been released during the 7th year of any Nintendo platform's lifecycle, and I doubt that will change anytime soon. And no, a 2018 Mario platformer on the 3DS will not sell 10 million copies."
Yes, I know. Nintendo is that dumb.
@maceng
Mario Galaxy 2 released in 2010, less than 4 years into the Wii's lifecycle, and that game couldn't even break 8 million sold. A 3DS Mario game in 2018 will sell much less.
@maceng 3D Super Mario games are platform games. Anyway, Nintendo is going to release
Super Mario Odyssey. They will probably release a new 2D Super Mario game on the Switch in 2018. That will make more sense than releasing a new 2D Super Mario game on the 3DS, which is already a successful platform. By the way, not everyone who disagrees with you is dumb.
@XCWarrior
You can believe what you want, but they're making enough to stay among the top of the charts worldwide, and the supply constraints are very real (unless you'd like to accuse Forbes and New York Times and every other major news publication of fabricating the story to secretly help Nintendo's publicity?)
Either way, doesn't change the fact everyone loves the system and it's catching on like wildfire. Call it Wii U 2, call it whatever you want, but you'll understand when everyone else around you is playing on one and you're the only one not
@Caryslan
If that's what Sony are doing, then Nintendo need to do the same
@Mahe
"Do tell me, what bigger exclusives does Switch have outside Japan than Splatoon 2? There's Mario, and... uh, that's that."
There's Zelda and MK8D. Hardly anybody cares about the other Console they're on so to most people they're exclusives. You can choose to ignore this if you want, but it's true.
@westman98 So many mistakes...
1) The Mario Galaxy game sold close to 12MM, just went the Wii itself had sold like 22-25 MM. Compared to the 3DS install based of 65MM+.
2) The combined sales of both Mario Galaxy games was around 19MM or so.
@NinNin I didn't say it wasn't!
@maceng According to Wikipedia, Super Mario Galaxy 2 sold 7.67 million copies.
@NinNin I stand corrected. I said combined sales of both Super Mario Galaxy games. The first one sold about 11.6MM, so combined it amounts to little over 19MM. Get your facts checked!
@faint yeah no. While not as convenient as switch, you literally just need the console and gamepad with the power supply. People used to go to airports with their wii us and fly cross country/around the world with them.
@Indielink no one is contesting that the wii u is more portable than switch. but to infer that wii u isn't portable is silly. And no, it doesn't take a "wall of text" to know how to take one outside the home. Gamepad, console, power supply with appropriate converter. Ppl did it all the time
@electrolite77 i meant a real HOME console successor.
@maceng The point is that you just affirmed @westman98's point, which says that a new Super Mario game that releases late in a console's life cycle won't sell spectacularly well.
@maceng
Exactly. The first Mario Galaxy sold well over 10 million. The 2nd one, released 2+ years later, didnt. A 2018 3DS Mario platformer wont either. It took Mario 3D Land 4 years to reach 10 million units sold. The 3DS won't be a thing past 2020.
@XCWarrior yeah and u get tinfoil.
@XCWarrior it's out selling the Xbox one and has each month since release.
@gatorboi352
It's not gonna happen. They've lost that battle. Their current console is their most powerful home console and their own games look better than ever before. Beyond that they don't care. They're not going to throw money away trying to compete with bigger, stronger opposition by offering the same things as their bigger, stronger opposition. You'd have to redefine 'futile'.
@gatorboi352
DUH !!
Nintendo Switch itself is HOME CONSOLE !
Wanna play like Real Home Console ? Just PUT inside the dock, duh !!
Are you keep being ignorant ?!
@Indielink
😁
Probably a good rule of thumb that if the explanation of how to play a console portably involves any of "tl;dr", "sine wave" or indeed "explanation" it's not portable
Looks like it was a solid week. Lolol. Fantastic numbers.
I must be quite the alien for never having taken my Switch out of it's dock. But I know there's more like me and that's fine. It lends legitimacy to that play-style, which is by no means any more or less important than handheld (albeit that Switch sacrifices on that front for the handheld part, but makes up for it in games, yes hard to justify right now, but it'll make sense in time)
@electrolite77 They've thrown that one away with the N64/Gamecube at the time. The market is now filled with 2 power-boxes, and there isn't room for another, so it seems.
So now the Wii U is portable??
Lmao... Is this how far one will go to discredit or delegitimize the Switch's success?
Anyways, it will be interesting to see how well the Switch, 3DS, PS4, Splatoon 2, and both versions of DQXI sell this current week. Have the Switch shortages finally ended? Will the 2DS LL and PS4 be able to sustain their elevated sales, eapecially the former?
@Grudgebearer
Totally agree. They sort of tried with Gamecube but it still lacked an awful lot of games compared to PS2 and Xbox. That gen showed that it's not just about power, you have to have the storage medium, online facilities, willingness to offer financial incentives to publishers, willingness to help market third-party games and an audience that wants to buy them in sufficient numbers. History has shown that ship has long sailed and Nintendo have very little inclination to do those things. Still seems a struggle for some to accept this though.
@westman98
"Lmao... Is this how far one will go to diacredit or delegitimize the Switch's success?"
The desperation on the part of some posters on here is tangible and increasing
@faint The Xtra large Xboner is coming this holiday. Gamers would be extremely dumb to buy the current model right now. Let's see how the sales compare when the faster, stronger, model is out.
@JaxonH I plan to get a Switch... when they get more 3rd party support, and have more exclusives for it that I can't already play on my WiiU or 3DS.
I have a feeling I'll be picking it up sometime in 2018, whenever a must have game is finally out. Mario looks great but that's not a system seller for me.
@faint You can't put your Switch in your pocket, so you can't take it anywhere. Yes, its easier than a typical console, but it's not slip in and go. I'm really hoping next E3 they show us a remodel like the DSLite.
@XCWarrior
I mean, don't get me wrong. If you legitimately don't like it hey, I'm not gonna bother you about it.
But honestly, from one gamer to another... it's the raddest system I've ever owned.
Also, I know it wasn't addressed to me but I want to chime in. I know Switch can't fit in your pocket (well, it can, and certainly jacket pockets, but point taken). However, a small black case with built in handle is actually easier to carry than in a pocket, in my experience, cause when I put 3DS in back pocket I sit on it in the car, so I have to remove it, whereas Switch I carry with handle and within a week formed a habit of carrying it like my life depended on it. Everywhere I go I've got that case in hand. Also, when I used to take Vita with me I couldn't put that in my pocket because it wasn't a clamshell, so I had to use a case. But it had no handle, so, like 3DS it was actually more inconvenient. And the benefit of having the case is, if you play your cards right, can fit a 26,800mAh portable USB-C Power Delivery battery, mini tripod, USB-C PD charger, 6ft USB-C to USB-C cable, earbuds, and an amiibo chip in the case along with 20 games. Everything you'd need to play for 24 hrs straight, charge in tabletop mode, charge from a wall, charge the battery from the wall... you name it.
@JaxonH I get what your saying, but I kept my 3DS in my front pocket... so no case needed. I saw the case my buddy brought his Switch over, I do not want to lug that around.
And unfortunatley my first experience with it was only using a single joy con to play on the system in a split screen. Didn't resonate with me at all. Felt like I was holding something too small and cheap to enjoy.
I'm still gonna get one, but I want a revision, or at least a special edition. And I need a MH game on it, or Pokemon proper, or something more than what's currently on it. And I want to be able to just walk into a store and buy it. They gotta get this stock thing figured out.
@XCWarrior
Well, it depends on the case. Mine is barely a half inch wider than the system and k my 1 inch thick, super compact. Sideways Joycon isn't the main experience. That's just for in a pinch if you're out and about and have no other controllers. Sometimes I'll set up in tabletop mode at work and pass a joycon, but I keep a pair of Surge Grips in my droor which turns sideways joycon into what almost feels like a legit controller. Super comfy and a terrific $10-15 investment. But playing in tabletop, with a joycon in each hand, leaned back in a chair... it feels like home console gaming at work.
As for MH, I'm counting down the days to MHXX. Dialog is meaningless so the game is super playable. Plus Google translate app with AR tech and word scanning from phone makes it so easy to read anything in English, plus having the fan-translated 3DS version, with save transfers I can transfer to 3DS, see what items I need to craft, then resume playing on Switch. Quests are color coded, and 2 weeks ago I decided to learn Hiragana and Katakana. Only took a few hours, and yet that small investment will help me read 50% of the critical text in game cause most item names, armor names, etc are written in Katakana which phonetically sound out words borrowed from other languages (basically just English).
But also, Arms is legit, incredible game so much better than I was expecting, like almost Splatoon level of awesome, and of course Splatoon 2, my new addiction til MHXX and Mario Kingdom Battle release. Even Zelda and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe- having those games in crisp HD on a handheld... It's mindblowing. If someone told me there was a device that existed which could run those 2 games alone, in full HD console spec, with removable controllers... I wouldn't believe it to be true. Yet here we are. I even play Splatoon 2 online at work via hotspot. It's nuts.
I'm pretty sure they're as frustrated with the stock as anyone else. It's their bottom line suffering. But my friend at work just bought one 3 days ago, and he found one in store. Sometimes though, systems just catch on like this and sell out. Of course most systems don't have to fight mobile component shortages either. But it'll sort itself out in time. As will games. By the time this year is up, there'll be Zelda, Mario Kart (with battle mode, yay!), Arms, Splatoon 2 (Salmon Run is so awesome), MHXX (JP or not, nothing will stand between me and MH on Switch), Mario Kingdom Battle, Pokken Tournament, Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade X, Skyrim, Fire Emblem Warriors, Rocket League, buncha sports games if you're into that (actual console versions to play anywhere), and a pile of various other games which some will pique certain people's interest, some won't. JRPG's are starting to pour in which I love. And we have Pokemon, Fire Emblem (real FE), Metroid Prime 4, Kirby and Yoshi all coming too, DQXI (hopefully it doesn't arrive too late)... so ya. Idk. I could just play Splatoon 2 and MHXX the rest of the year. Idk how to make time for all these other games.
Wow, that was a long post. Sorry for that
@XCWarrior
Nobody but the most hardcore of Xbox fans will upgrade to the Xbox One X.
XBO sales are slow right now due to the lack of exclusives in conjunction with the fact that all XBO multiplatform games are on PS4 (and all those multiplats have sold much better on PS4).
In Japan, the Switch sold more in July than in May and June combined.
Here is my wordwide Switch sales predictions for July 2017:
Japan: 245,000 **These are actual sales, not predictions
North America: 260,000 (235,000 from the US)
Europe + ROTW: 240,000
Total: 745,000
@gatorboi352 That's a small backpack worth of stuff to carry around. THe WiiU console itself has a solid heft to it, as does the massive block that is the power. And then you have the Gamepad itself which requires its own case within the bag and the power for THAT which has its own brick. Unless you went all digital you're carrying around a bunch of gamecases, or at the very least a cd case. I've done it, it's not the most comfortable travel.
The Sheikah Slate case I got in the BoTW special edition fits everything I need except the power, while being only marginally larger than the system.
@electrolite77 Simply felt the need to call him out on what he is trying to use as evidence for the WiiU being portable. If people complain about the Switch being too big, the far larger Gamepad and 4 pound block that is the WiiU itself is comically gigantic.
@GrailUK I don't want them to ditch the 3DS, I just want to be rid of the "oh wow, a new interesting looking game is announced, I want that for my Switch! .....and it's only on 3DS, again! sighes" fase we're currently stuck in v.v
@A7XBlink182247 Indeed. It's still a very strong platform, and even if support does fizzle a bit the sell-through should still remain strong. Plenty of evergreen titles will see to that.
I want that 2DS XL. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen,
Nice to see Splatoon 2 still doing pretty well. It's an awesome game, I'm having way more fun with it than I ever would've expected when I first heard about the concept back when the first Splatoon was announced. Only Nintendo could make shooting ink at other players so damn cool
@electrolite77 That said, some of those things you post there are part of the regular process to get third-parties, right? And we do want those, surely.
@gatorboi352
Your wrong. mine has only once been out of the dock!
@NinNin "a new Super Mario game that releases late in a console's life cycle won't sell spectacularly well."
Say hello to New Super Mario Bros. Wii with 30 million units sold.
https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/finance/software/wii.html
@westman98 "No Mario platformer has ever been released during the 7th year of any Nintendo platform's lifecycle, and I doubt that will change anytime soon."
That's because very few Nintendo systems have ever survived 7 years. The success of the New 2DS XL and even the original 2DS is changing that. Did you know that thanks to 2DS, the sales of the "2DS and 3DS hardware family" have actually RISEN year on year?
That means that people are buying more 2DS systems than they were before, and that's even with the original 2DS, let alone the New 2DS XL.
Also, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island came out in 1995, a whole 5 years after Super Nintendo was launched in Japan, and the Super Nintendo was already on its last legs by then.
@electrolite77 If we're to believe their annual 77th shareholders meeting, then Nintendo is investing in a lot of things, but not that.
Let's hope they reconsider, since if all of these things (World DQ etc) are to put on Sony's lap, then they deserve to be burned by the fire they're playing with.
@Grudgebearer
Oh absolutely. There isn't a game I don't want on the Switch. I'm not snobby about mobile games or COD or indie games or anything. All welcome, the more the merrier. I've just accepted that it isn't likely to happen on a Nintendo machine in the foreseeable future. Anybody that bothered about e.g. GTA and the like will need another machine next to the Switch or miss out.
@electrolite77 You know what irks me more than anything? Capcom: http://nintendoeverything.com/capcom-monster-hunter-xx-switch-version-is-another-test-to-evaluate-our-support-for-switch/
@Nolan420 "I contest that, the switch is way more portable"
I'm not saying it isn't though.
@dew12333 not wrong. That just means you fall into the other half of Switch owners I know. The ones that have taken their docks out of the box.
@Mahe
The Gameboy family literally lasted 11+ years on the market prior to the release of the GBA, and no new Mario platformer released on it 8 years in.
3DS shipments being up YoY is great and all, but that still doesnt mean a 2018 3D Mario platformer on 3DS can sell 10 million units. Again, it took Mario 3D Land four years to reach that milestone, and the 3DS won't be a thing in 2020 or beyond.
Mario Worlrd 2 and NSMB Wii were released 5 and 3 years into the SNES and Wii's lifecycle respectively, not 8+ years in.
@westman98 "no new Mario platformer released on it 8 years in"
You gotta watch this one, he's tricky with words...
https://www.nintendolife.com/reviews/3ds-eshop/super_mario_bros_deluxe_gbc
"Mario Worlrd 2 and NSMB Wii were released 5 and 3 years into the SNES and Wii's lifecycle respectively"
@NinNin was trying to make the point that Super Mario Galaxy 2 sold less than SMG1 because of the timing, and no Mario games do well late in the lifecycle, when that is patently false. New SMB Wii sold a huge part of those 30 million in the Wii's later years, and SMW2 probably sold for a long time too.
@Mahe
That port of SMB1 is definitely a new Mario platformer...oh wait...
NSMB Wii was a sales juggernaut, no one is denying that, but that game's sales were a bit more frontloaded than you think; it shipped 22+ million copies by March 2010 and 26+ million copies by March 2011, so just under 4 million copies of NSMB Wii were sold from April 2011 until the Wii's discontinuation.
Let's not drink the cool aid. The 3DS family of systems selling 140,000+ units during the launch of DQXI is phenomenal, but that is a once-per-generation event that only Japan cares about. The 3DS will absolutely NOT be selling in these quantities in 2018. Western 3DS sales also must be taken into consideration, given that Mario games sell far more in the west than in Japan. The 3DS is barely selling more than 100,000 units per month in the US right now, if not less.
Woah. Is someone attempting to take on @westman98 in a sales debate? Wait, let me get my gin and my popcorn. This gon be gud.
@electrolite77
It's a pretty pointless "debate" over nothing. No new Mario platformer is coming to the 3DS next year. Period.
@westman98
I agree. Good to see you unleash the stats though.
@Mahe Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is a Super Mario game in name only. It doesn't play like a Super Mario game. The main mechanics are eating enemies and throwing eggs. It was a new IP, but Nintendo used the name Super Mario for an obvious reason.
Anyway, as @westman98 said, it's pointless to discuss this.
@electrolite77 "The desperation on the part of some posters on here is tangible and increasing"
Their reaching puts the ARMS roster to shame.
@gatorboi352
'Everyone playing switch effectively uses it as a portable anyways.'
That what you wrote, I'm not trying to be picky because I actually feel there needs to be more reason to take it out of the dock. They keep advertising it that way but haven't given us anything like 'streetpass' or a essential take out game.
For me I do blame my age to a large degree, getting a bit age hindered with the eye sight, as that much detail on the small screen?? I just prefer to see that on the tv.
@westman98 You're forgetting Europe. Thanks to European sales of the 2DS specifically, the system has been offsetting slowing sales in the US. And it's thanks to the 2DS and now New 2DS that the hardware family is up year on year in Japan too. Sure, Dragon Quest XI week is exceptional, but the system will keep selling for a long time still.
When talking New SMB Wii sales, you also forget that shipping does not equal sellthrough to customers. You've got over 8 million copies of New SMB Wii that were shipped well past the game's original launch window, from 2010 to 2011 to onwards, and that's without question "late Wii lifecycle". If Nintendo had not cut out Wii support in 2012 in their foolish hopes that Wii U would replace Wii, this might be a different discussion, but that's what happened and here we are.
@NinNin @westman98 You should know very well that during that point in their history, Nintendo barely released any Mario games at all. From Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island to New Super Mario Bros. on DS, it took a whole 11 years without a brand new 2D Mario game. Instead, they released Wario Land games, made by the Super Mario Land team, and ports of the existing Mario games.
The current Nintendo operates in a different way. Counting in SMM, there have been 7 new 2D Mario games in the past 11 years. You can see from this that the past 11 years have been very different than the 11 years before that.
@Mahe
The Wii was far more popular in 2010/2011 than the 3DS will be in 2017/2018, especially outside of Japan. Mario in general was also bigger on the Wii than in the 3DS.
Anyways, this discussion is pointless. Any future Mario platformers, 2D or 3D, will be on the Switch. At best, the 3DS might get a Mario spinoff next year, such as the inevitable Mario & Sonic at the 2018 Winter Olympics (alongside the Switch version)
@westman98 "The Wii was far more popular in 2010/2011 than the 3DS will be in 2017/2018, especially outside of Japan. Mario in general was also bigger on the Wii than in the 3DS."
For once we are in complete agreement. Even with the 2DS models, the 2DS/3DS family has never been as popular as Wii was outside Japan.
Even so, the recent success of games like Miitopia, FE Fates and Super Mario Maker show that there's demand for more games on these systems. If a niche RPG title like Miitopia can do this well, think about what a brand new Mario title could do.
@gatorboi352 and I'm among these people myself (for the most part; my dock HAS been out of the box and tested a couple times). And then there are people including some commenters here who boast having never taken their Switches out of the docks. And that's the whole point and definition of "hybrid console" some people are missing - it can be whichever you want for as long as you want. No kind of strictly home console will do that, and no kind of strictly portable console will do that by itself either (the historical examples all feature extra hardware and/or cables required to so much as play a portable game on a TV screen). Releasing a home console would be a step behind from Switch now (and feel like one as well after all the "new way to play" emphasis Nintendo's marketing campaign has made).
Even 3DS mostly makes sense to succeed because of its dual screen gameplay mechanics aren't easily replicated by a single screen console like Switch rather than because of its portability. And frankly, an similar form successor to 3DS would make a good successor to Wii U as well, since Wii U itself partly followed DS family with dual screen gameplay as its marketed core concept.
