Re: Poll: How Would You Like To See Dreamcast Classics Arrive On Switch?

KIREEK

They should release Phantasy Star Online: Complete Edition. Include Blue Burst's content, maybe some more bonus items. Most importantly, give us the custom networking capabilities of the GameCube version (to guarantee the game will survive once the official servers inevitably go down).

If they have the time/resources, give us an Episode V.

This would be glorious.

@Dog The Switch has about 5.5 hours of battery life on a charge when a game isn't graphically intensive. When a game pushes the system's limits (like BOTW), the battery can be as low as 2.5 hours.

The 3DS has about 7-10 hours when the 3D is off (and for me it's off the vast majority of the time to preserve that battery life).

And I do consider a laptop to be portable, but not as portable as a phone. It's the degree of portability that the 3DS offers that makes it more appealing on that front (to me).

Re: Phantasy Star Joins SEGA Ages Line In North America And Europe Later This Month

Each one of these single player games are some of the best JRPGs ever made.

Phantasy Star II is my personal favorite, so I'm crossing my fingers that that one gets a similar sort of treatment one day (the dungeons in that game were far more frustrating to me than Phantasy Star I- especially without a guide). IV is the universally praised one (for good reason) and III is the universally despised one. I liked III A LOT though and think that the story revelations toward the end make the whole game worth playing through.

Anyhow....

Hopefully this helps revive the franchise in the west. I've yearned for this loudly over the years. Nothing would give me greater joy than a re-release of PSO1. If they somehow were able to create an Episode V for PSO1 and updated the visuals without compromising the aesthetic style of the original, I think it would absolutely be a killer app on the Switch. The game is too important to be neglected imho.

@ShadJV Interestingly, PS4 and PC are 100% on the same servers. It's one of the rare examples of cross-play on the PS4. I believe the Vita version also has cross-play but I'm not 100% about that one (and whether it had its own servers). Honestly I hope I'm completely wrong about the way the game will work on the Switch. However I think the problem is going to unfold like this: 1) you will have no problem getting the actual "launcher" from the e-shop but 2) you're going to have an insurmountable IP ban that Sega has in place for anywhere outside of Japan.

That isn't a snub at Nintendo either for helping to make sure their firmware is constantly secure. I respect that. But I do think it will make playing PSO2 on Switch an impossibility unless we get an officially sanctioned western release.

I would LOVE to be wrong about this and if I am, I will meet you in Ship 2 .

Completely agreed on your other comment as well.

@ShadJV If it doesn't work like the PC version, no you will not be able to play. Arks Layer (the phenomenal English translation effort for the PC version) has a built-in proxy, which is the reason people from outside of Japan are able to play it. If I'm assuming correctly, this will have no client whatsoever and will be completely cloud-based (like you're streaming the game), so no room for a proxy ESPECIALLY on a locked-down ecosystem like the Switch.

Shame that Sega is completely inept. Now would be the perfect time to release PSO2 in the west - right when Destiny 2 is in a rut and The Division 1 is in its golden years. Monster Hunter is doing extraordinarily well, and Sega has a formula equal to or greater than that game in terms of systems that retain players with PSO2... and yet, we still don't get it.

I love every single Phantasy Star (including the single player games), and I know many others who do as well. It's an insult that they turned their back on us.

The worst part is a lot of people don't even know what they're missing. Western youngins don't know about Phantasy Star because the last freaking game released here was Phantasy Star Zero (10 years ago). Nova should have been a PS4 game with an international release.

Re: Editorial: Trying to Play Monster Hunter XX in Japanese on the Nintendo Switch

KIREEK

"My experiment didn't last long, then. For my money the best way to enjoy Monster Hunter games (those on 3DS, in any case) is to let them get their claws into you, to get truly immersed in the detail - you need to do that to equip yourself for the tough endgame, in any case. It's not possible to do that when playing in another language, and so in most cases I'd suggest an import or Japanese eShop download of XX simply isn't worthwhile."

This right here is exactly how I feel about PSO2 (particularly the Switch version which will probably exponentially harder/impossible to mod). PSO was my favorite game of all time and I still can't believe the franchise is basically dead in the west seeing as Diablo 3 and Destiny show that people are very interested in this kind of game. At least MH fans don't have to sit by while MHW gets a Japan-only release.

Supported the game when it was at the crowdfunding stage. I always enjoyed it and think that the Switch is the perfect platform. The ability to play it on the go (conveniently/comfortably) is a big deal.

I just had the most epic GameStop preorder experience ever. Noticed their website crashed, immediately grabbed my keys and RAN to my car. Gunned it for the local GameStop walked in, 3 people waiting. They only had 4. I was #4.

5 seconds later a guy walks in asking about it...

Epic.
