Re: 'Battle Inspired' Rewards Added to My Nintendo in North America

KIREEK

Trash.

At this point either a) "restructure/reassign" whoever is in charge of My Nintendo or b) get rid of it completely. Nothing (itself) would be better than this in my opinion- I honestly can't believe Nintendo actually wastes any resources/manpower on something so disappointing.

Re: Sony's Jim Ryan Reiterates Praise for Nintendo's Resurgence With the Switch

KIREEK

@Meaty-cheeky It is an interesting question. My prediction is we'll see a version of the hardware that emphasizes portability (some features like removable joycons, touchscreen etc might be removed) in a smaller form factor and at a lower cost. A 2DS(witch), if you will.

I think it would be enormously popular as well. Something small that can run the games in a bare bones capacity seems very appealing to me, particularly as the library expands into a vast number of RPGs.

Re: GameStop Opens Pre-Orders on Samus Edition New Nintendo 3DS XL in the US

PSA: clear cover plates on the standard N3DS can give you amazing results for customization. I was going to pull the trigger on this but... nah. If I was going to buy another 3DS it would be invested in yet another sealed standard size N3DS.

Almost got me though Nintendo. If Samus wasn't upside down then the decision would be a lot harder.

Re: Walmart Cancels a Number of SNES Mini Pre-Orders

KIREEK

Not surprised. The nature of the random time it was available was suspicious. There is no good solution for how to handle preorders though. It's evident that Nintendo is not making anywhere near enough of these SNES Classics to meet demand.

As usual.

I do hope the people who jumped right onto forums/comments sections to brag about getting multiples get theirs cancelled though. Would bring a big smile to my face.

Re: Editorial: Nintendo, Somehow, Has Gone Backwards With Voice Chat on the Switch

KIREEK

I want to have optimism that things will improve but they probably won't. It's sad really. The way the online side of things are handled on the Switch are exactly why I was cautious to jump in on the communal trash-talking of miiverse a few months back. You're happy with these "alternatives" that are actually superior on third party apps?

Horrible and a shame. There probably won't be any consequences for Nintendo's bottom line though, so get used to the idea of it continuing to be bad.

Re: Feature: The Biggest Nintendo 3DS Games of 2017 - Summer Edition

KIREEK

@EvilLucario I can respect that. I'll admit, the story was definitely more fleshed out than other games. I guess my problem wasn't with the story itself but the whole being-locked-into-cutscenes-as-soon-as-you-leave/enter-an-indoor-structure phenomenon as you're progressing.

Also, in retrospect, I also could not stand Hau. I don't mind having a friendly rival - I really enjoyed what they did with Wally in Ruby/Sapphire, for example. For some reason though, Hau was just insufferable for me. Totally a personal thing though.

In any case, it was by no means a bad game - definitely didn't mean to portray it like that in my initial post. It has the best elements of the series in one objective hand and in the other (more personally subjective) hand it grinds my gears.

Re: Feature: The Biggest Nintendo 3DS Games of 2017 - Summer Edition

KIREEK

@PanurgeJr I actually really appreciate the recommendation. Solatorobo is one of those games that I was always interested in from afar but something always came up and put off my purchasing it. I'll be rectifying that and putting it on the backlog. I've heard a lot of great things about that particular game.

Re: Feature: The Biggest Nintendo 3DS Games of 2017 - Summer Edition

KIREEK

@Aaron09 Sun and Moon was just an incredible dissappointment for me and the three or four people I know who still play Pokemon. It was the first time the story actually felt like a chore and the Alola region felt so cramped. It's hard for me to get excited when we're talking about a direct sequel.

If they pulled a Gold/Silver and included an entire earlier region that hasn't been revisited yet, I'd be floored. But that seems as likely as being able to preorder a SNES Classic.

Re: Feature: The Biggest Nintendo 3DS Games of 2017 - Summer Edition

KIREEK

Great list. Life is never going to leave this portable entirely though. There are two gigantic game libraries (3DS and DS) which will have people playing for a LONG time after support has ended. My backlog of obscure DS/3DS RPGs is intimidating.

Even if there is a Virtual Console on the switch, I'm confident that the DS/3DS catalogue will never show up there. Your best bet for that was the Wii U whose storefront will, no doubt, stop being supported.

Random and nothing to do with this: I had a dream last night that I got to go on a shopping spree in the Nintendo of America HQ employee store. It was a good one!

Re: Editorial: In Praise of the Smaller New Nintendo 3DS - The Best 3DS*

KIREEK

The best portable Nintendo has ever made and my favorite console of all time. The best looking one too IMO. It actually fits in your pocket, can be customized with faceplates, produces an adequately sized image without compromising image quality and has colored buttons.

I have three black ones (all of which I had to buy from scalpers at 20% above cost) and two white ones. I also collected a bunch of cover plates including several dupes of my favorites (here's looking at you Hanafuda). Only one Teresa (aka Boo) set though - which will remain sealed and probably sold later. The clear cover plates were great because they allowed you to print out custom designs and insert them to your heart's content (See here: http://kireek.kinja.com/i-love-clear-cover-plates-1773859533 ).

The resale value on these things is going to be fantastic if that's your thing. I'll never sell the hardware though - I love it even more than the SNES.

Re: The Smaller New Nintendo 3DS is Discontinued Globally - An Era Ends

KIREEK

This was the best model. By far.

Glad I bought extras...though I don't see the first one dying anytime soon considering the hardware seems like the most solid that Nintendo ever produced and that's factoring in the actually-bombed Gameboy.

Prices are going to skyrocket. The black North American one will be worth a fortune sealed in a few years.

Re: Hori's Fresh-Looking Splatoon 2 Headset Is Heading To The West

KIREEK

Not being able to chat with randoms is a big turnoff for me. And it's not as if you'll see somebody's unique username (lol remember when we had hope for that?) and even have the option of adding them to your friend list in-game. Instead you'll rely on the "suggested friends" feature ex post facto.

The Switch is absolutely a great console but the online side is horrible (communication/adding friends quickly in-game etc). Definitely a giant leap back from the Wii U (which made adding friends a breeze) and, in many ways, it's ignorant of the last 20-30 years of advances in communication technology.

Also moderation within this kind of an ecosystem from Nintendo's end is virtually non-existent. If you run into vile behavior there is no recourse in terms of reporting the responsible party. Plus they can change their user ID AND friend codes on a whim and continue with the bad behavior that Nintendo is supposedly shielding us from by making these decisions.

Re: Feature: The NES and SNES Mini Could Live On Through Nintendo Switch

KIREEK

I would actually like to see physical releases.
Think:

Nes Classics Vol. 1, Vol. 2
;SNES Classics Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3
;N64 Classics Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3
;The Gameboy Collection
;The Virtual Boy Compendium
;Etc.

All the way up until the gamecube, where I'd imagine space would be a problem. Those would be worthy of individually released remasters. Here's looking at you Sunshine, Baten Kaitos, ***********PSO*********** etc.

Re: Hardware Review: New Nintendo 2DS XL

KIREEK

I'll probably get one. It certainly looks nice and the texture and weight would make it good for any card-save games I'd want to play on a larger screen (like Xenoblade) once in a while.

Re: Video: Digital Foundry Gives Its Assessment of the New Nintendo 2DS XL

KIREEK

@GameOtaku I'm with you.

The smaller New 3DS is BY FAR my favorite model. The pixel density, portability, ability to swap coverplates and the weight are all optimal.

I had to resort to scalpers when Amazon had their deal and paid roughly 20% more than the original $99 price for a couple units. The price will continue to skyrocket though. Particularly for that black model.

If you're in the market for one, I'd highly recommend getting it sooner rather than later because I think we're looking at a Game Boy Micro situation (in terms of price inflation) - maybe even a GameCube component cable situation.

I don't know if NOA is responsible for its relative absence here or whether the decision was higher up, but I think it was an enormous misstep to launch the "New XL" models in the west exclusively. Not that Nintendo cares, so long as the profit margins for the XL in this region go above whatever metric they consider satisfactory.

Re: Editorial: The Ongoing Pleasures of Nintendo Switch Boxes, Cartridges and (Occasionally) Manuals

KIREEK

The less data I add to the internal memory and the SD Card the better. I'm happy physical releases are still a thing and will go out of my way (even paying a premium) to get them.

In the same vein, I actually wish we got "classic collection" games (NES vol.1, NES vol. 2, SNES vol. 1... etc.) rather than a conventional a la carte Virtual Console. Sega has done it numerous times in the past. I'm quite sure that will never happen as the eShop pricing is more profitable. A glint of hope came with the NES Classic but Nintendo seems determined to relegate those releases to novelty status rather than a long-term product plan.
