The Nintendo Switch eShop has played host to many fantastic digital only games, though this obviously hasn’t pleased everybody. Some Switch owners prefer their games to be physical whenever possible, whether it be for collection purposes or for a sense of security in having a hard copy that you can own. Wherever you stand on the issue, more purchasing options are rarely a bad thing, and a popular indie title has just been announced for a physical release.
The Flame in the Flood is a survival game that launched on the eShop last year, and Super Rare Games just announced that this will be the second game that it will be doing a limited physical run for. Only 5,000 copies will be produced, so if this sounds like the kind of thing you might be interested in you might want to put in an order here. This edition will come with a trading card pack, a Director’s Commentary mode, and various gameplay enhancements, and it’s expected to ship in April.

So it was good that I've waited to get this then, even though it's been half off for a little...
I knew I'd been holding off on this one for some reason. A definite buy.
place an order where for this?
Pre-ordered, do I open it though?
I'm not too mad that I didn't wait because I bought it because I felt like playing it at the time. I doubt I'd find the time for it once the physical copy comes out.
If you include the shipping its like 70 CAD
$35 to own this game with a box and cards.
I got this on the eshop for $7.50
Great game but geeeez. Bad pricing. Too bad they all cant be like Binding of Isaac and its pricing and bonuses.
@pizzanuggs This ain't a mass market product. Only 5000 are being made, inherently as a collector's item.
Hmmm , will a US limited release be done? Is this a world wide or just EU ?
Bought both of their releases. I will ALWAYS support physical whenever possible.
@Pj1 That's up to you. I open all my Limited Run releases. I know I will never sell them, so I dont care about their collector's value.
'obvoisuly'
Looks like the physical version is Europe only with international shipping. Switch is region free and all, but I guess it is a very complicated and intellectually taxing job to state where a pre-order is taking place.
Have been on the ropes for this game, but now, pre-order done!
Cartridges really are the vinyl of video games.
Looked so tempting at first... But if you do the math and add taxes/shipping the price skyrockets to 37.98 pounds = about 43 euros... and as much as I love giving priority to physical release I think that's a little too much (eShop version is 14.99 euros).
My 0.02
EDIT: I'm living in Italy, I bet UK/other continental EU country shipping will be a tad less.
Physical releases on other Nintendo platforms were so much better. The games all fitted on the medium, they released at the same time as their digital counterpart(with exceptional circumstances) and they were priced the same as on other platforms.
@Pj1 hell yeah open it! Games are for playing
Ordered my copy at 6pm yesterday when nintendoeverything posted about it.
Works out to about €39 including post to Ireland.
Edit: it's that price as I used parcel motel to deliver to a UK address and I'll pick it up a day later in Dublin. So, yeah, still expensive but saved €3, not the best, but not the worst 😁
@Pod I'm surprised no one has yet released a cartridge game with vinyl soundtrack limited edition!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Like Nintendo eShop Selects you mean?
@chardir That's why I said "exceptional circumstances". There was only 2 of them, SteamWorld Collection and Fast Racing NEO. And what were those games? Indies. They're who are responsible for these physical releases coming out after the digital release.
@RetroGamerAndrew
"I'm living in Italy, I bet UK/other continental EU country shipping will be a tad less."
£31.98 in the UK with all the sneaky extras. As soon as Bioshock devs were mentioned I had to get it though. I missed this one and I'm now really looking forward to playing it.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE But indies by definition don't have a big publisher behind them to do a physical release, so they are only ever going to have these kind of late physical releases.
Where the mainstream publishers are doing half-baked releases I agree. This isn't one of them though - it's a collectable, for collectors.
@Old-Red well that's some serious price drop! Damn shipping fees...
@chardir
This, plus the fact that all the indie games are old enough to have the whole game with all dlc and patches included. I think this is why the physical copies of indie games are doing so well on the switch. Collectors like to know that they can play their games down the line (the ones who open the boxes anyway) and indies provide this. Add in the factor of limited numbers released and it's a collector's wet dream.
Thanks for the heads up! Im always down for physical copys. Pre-ordered the 2 pack.
No, thanks. I want to be part of the solution, not the problem. Scalpers currently rubbing their greasy mits...
@Pod Yes and that's a good thing in my view. Nothing like holding a box and cartridge in your hand and knowing they're yours forever. Nintendo should be producing more deluxe special editions to cater for such collectors.
@Pazuzu666 it's not exactly sledding crazy well like limitedrungames so I wouldn't worry about scalpers.
@Pazuzu666 @readyletsgo Scalpers aren't the problem anyway, it's the idiots with too much money on their hands paying for said items. Half the reason collectors collect things is in the hope they become valuable - of course they should be able to sell them if some other crazy person out there over values an item.
Case in point - I just sold custom Sega Genesis Nomad that I modded with an LCD, new speaker, region free mod, custom lithium ion battery back + charger, and custom blue paint job + sonic vinyl decals for $510 on eBay. It's actually listed again right now, if anyone is interested in checking it out, because the buyer returned it due to a button sticking, which was completely bogus. Anyway, my point is, $500 is way overpriced for a Nomad. But obviously someone out their values my custom work/paint job - am I supposed to limit the bids/offers I receive on an item, just so I'm not labeled a scalper? I think not.
EDIT: Including the link in case anyone is interested in my work. http://www.ebay.com/itm/162939561795?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1558.l2649
EDIT2: An even better example, I sold my PC Engine LT a few months back for $1500. I bought it broken for $600, refurbished it (Replaced all capacitors, replaced a volume wheel potentiometer, new power jacks, and new antenna) and sold it for $1500. Yes, they are rare collectors items - but I didn't set the price. I knew what it was worth, knew it wasn't worth it to me to keep it on hand, posted it on eBay and let the crazies run up the price.
@roadrunner343 I do the same with modded gameboys myself. Not that expensive thought. Little work goes into putting the front lights on and new housing.
I'd like to see the nomad, you have a link? Been thinking of modding sega stuff lately myself.
@Kirby-in-Kirkby
I enjoy it too, but it has become very obvious that it deliberately targets the feinsmeckers among us.
@readyletsgo Yeah, I edited my original post to include the link. I've done a frontlight gameboy for myself, and was really unhappy with the results. Not that the mod itself was bad, I just really don't like them front-lit, so I've never offered them for sale.. I've tried both GBA SP front light screens, and a couple cheap front light kits off ebay. Ultimately, I ended up using a GBA SP backlit screen + Benn Venn's mod for my personal unit. Much happier with that.
@SCAssassin yeah but if you print out your own cover and slap it on your shelf....itll be....1 of a kind.
Collect that business to!
But seriously yeah i getcha. If i had that kinda extra dough to throw around id consider some of these limited releases.
Id just expect the package to appear a little more premium at that price...like a manual!
@Lalivero this is like 4x the amount it was on the e-shop a week or two ago. I guess it's good if having physical means that much to u?
@KIREEK
@readyletsgo
Thanks guys.
Got this for free from HumbleBundle, so I decided to buy a physical copy of it.
