Re: Future Business Shift Could See Nintendo Move Away From Home Console Development

It's not like Nintendo is going to drop console games entirely in this scenario either - probably just pull a SEGA and release on PlayStation, Xbox etc.

Furukawa mentions "We aren't really fixated on our consoles" and delivering a Nintendo experience which does shout that console hardware is no longer a core priority. Previously Nintendo seemed to consider their hardware and software as hand-in-hand businesses, but not anymore.

In that case, maybe the Switch will be the final Nintendo console. It'd probably be easier for Nintendo to take the agnostic approach and release across multiple platforms, consoles, PCs etc etc.

Re: Future Business Shift Could See Nintendo Move Away From Home Console Development

This obviously isn't a sign that Nintendo is going third party immediately and permanently - just that it's a route they've considered. Then again, that's interesting as well, since their previous stances have been outright denial.

Console development is super expensive and at some point, especially if their next console fails, it may make sense to jump ship.

Re: Switch Has Outsold The Original And Slim PlayStation 4 In Japan

@PrincessBowsette Fire Emblem, Bayonetta and Metroid are all great games but not huge system sellers. Pokémon is a whole different story, though.

PS4 has Dreams, Days Gone and possibly The Last Of Us 2/Ghost of Tsushima/Death Stranding. Those are heavy hitting titles.

The PS4 is definitely on the way to 100 million units sold which may happen before 2020 (I think it'll come close but fall just short?) and I just can't see the Switch reaching those numbers during its lifespan. It'll outsell Xbox One by a huge margin but it won't touch 100m.

Re: Rumour: Google Is Creating A Gaming Platform To Rival Switch, PS4 and Xbox

Not sure why everyone is so negative on this. I'm optimistic, I think that if Google can do streaming right then they'll be bringing something unique to the industry. A fourth major console player would be good for competition, too - especially if it's going up against PS4 and XB1, because Nintendo probably wouldn't be affected.

Plus, I doubt it'll be an Android console or anything like that, since Google has tried and failed before to get that off the ground, not to mention they're talking to large publishers about this project - who aren't likely to make mobile level ports of their big franchises.

I suppose we'll see, but nevertheless it'll be an interesting next console generation.

Re: Talking Point: What We Hope to See in the Nintendo NX Preview Trailer

Inkling

I have a feeling we'll get a sizzle reel of games demonstrating the concept - ie Playing Zelda then the controllers detach and dock to play Just Dance (if the Eurogamer report is correct, of course ), etc. Would be a good way to show games and the console at the same time.

NINJA EDIT: Interesting that the UK site states "gaming platform" while the US site states "home console". Aaaah. I can't wait.

Re: Oceanhorn, A Game Inspired by The Wind Waker, Confirmed for 'A Nintendo Console'

It baffles me that, despite Nintendo's love of Indie Games, NX dev kits aren't widely available to them right now. (Or at least it seems like it judging by developer comments). Wouldn't Nintendo be wanting a strong start with lots of Indie Games and AAA games (which, ironically, it seems AAA devs don't have dev kits either).

That being said, I kinda expect this game to be coming to New 3DS via Unity, especially considering the phrasing (Vita and Android + 3DS?). I don't expect Wii U or NX. But please do surprise me.

Re: Koji Igarashi on the Wii U Port of Bloodstained

I get that the Wii U will be pretty much dead at that point, but I have to ask - if the U version is specifically for backers... then why not just release it anyway? Unless there's technical limitations/budget restraints I see no reason to not dual-release it.

Re: Talking Point: What Approach Should Nintendo Take With Its NX Reveal?

Inkling

It all depends on the system.

If it's a handheld, Nintendo should do a large press event. They need to capture the attention of 3DS owners as, let's be honest, outside of fans they are Nintendo's only market.

If it's a console... then I'm not sure. Nintendo could go with a press event and try to make waves. Unfortunately for them, the crowd that it seems they're trying to capture (via social media etc) has moved on and would just think "Huh, cool, a new Wii.". Doing a large press event could either be a fantastic idea... or a horrible mistake. For consoles, Nintendo's only current market is die-hard fans. I've got multiple friends who bought Wii Us around launch only to play them once or twice for Nintendo Land (ironically mirroring the Wii and Wii Sports).

If Nintendo is targeting casuals, and it's a console... well good luck to them. A safer bet would be that Nintendo aims for their hardcore players, in which case a "Nintendo NX Direct" is totally fine. Certain game announcements make it seem like the NX is a console... but all leaks point towards a handheld.

TL;DR:
Handheld+Casuals=Event/Viral
Handheld+Hardcore=Direct
Console+Casuals= ...?
Console+Hardcore=Direct
