It's not like Nintendo is going to drop console games entirely in this scenario either - probably just pull a SEGA and release on PlayStation, Xbox etc.
Furukawa mentions "We aren't really fixated on our consoles" and delivering a Nintendo experience which does shout that console hardware is no longer a core priority. Previously Nintendo seemed to consider their hardware and software as hand-in-hand businesses, but not anymore.
In that case, maybe the Switch will be the final Nintendo console. It'd probably be easier for Nintendo to take the agnostic approach and release across multiple platforms, consoles, PCs etc etc.
This obviously isn't a sign that Nintendo is going third party immediately and permanently - just that it's a route they've considered. Then again, that's interesting as well, since their previous stances have been outright denial.
Console development is super expensive and at some point, especially if their next console fails, it may make sense to jump ship.
@PrincessBowsette Fire Emblem, Bayonetta and Metroid are all great games but not huge system sellers. Pokémon is a whole different story, though.
PS4 has Dreams, Days Gone and possibly The Last Of Us 2/Ghost of Tsushima/Death Stranding. Those are heavy hitting titles.
The PS4 is definitely on the way to 100 million units sold which may happen before 2020 (I think it'll come close but fall just short?) and I just can't see the Switch reaching those numbers during its lifespan. It'll outsell Xbox One by a huge margin but it won't touch 100m.
@PrincessBowsette Ehh, PS4 too has heavy hitters. Going from ~22 mil to ~88 mil (or however much the PS4 has sold at the end of 2019) in a year is near impossible.
I can see it happening, and honestly I wouldn't be opposed either. 3DS and Switch are wildly different systems aimed at different markets with different strengths and weaknesses.
@Akropolon Not to mention offering that accessible controller to other game companies to release for their own platforms, and their development of games on other platforms through Minecraft.
Not sure why everyone is so negative on this. I'm optimistic, I think that if Google can do streaming right then they'll be bringing something unique to the industry. A fourth major console player would be good for competition, too - especially if it's going up against PS4 and XB1, because Nintendo probably wouldn't be affected.
Plus, I doubt it'll be an Android console or anything like that, since Google has tried and failed before to get that off the ground, not to mention they're talking to large publishers about this project - who aren't likely to make mobile level ports of their big franchises.
I suppose we'll see, but nevertheless it'll be an interesting next console generation.
I have a feeling we'll get a sizzle reel of games demonstrating the concept - ie Playing Zelda then the controllers detach and dock to play Just Dance (if the Eurogamer report is correct, of course ), etc. Would be a good way to show games and the console at the same time.
NINJA EDIT: Interesting that the UK site states "gaming platform" while the US site states "home console". Aaaah. I can't wait.
My game is in a bit of limbo. It's powered by HTML5 and so IDK if it's coming to NX if the web framework rumours (being ditched) are true. Ah well there's always PC and Wii U
It baffles me that, despite Nintendo's love of Indie Games, NX dev kits aren't widely available to them right now. (Or at least it seems like it judging by developer comments). Wouldn't Nintendo be wanting a strong start with lots of Indie Games and AAA games (which, ironically, it seems AAA devs don't have dev kits either).
That being said, I kinda expect this game to be coming to New 3DS via Unity, especially considering the phrasing (Vita and Android + 3DS?). I don't expect Wii U or NX. But please do surprise me.
I get that the Wii U will be pretty much dead at that point, but I have to ask - if the U version is specifically for backers... then why not just release it anyway? Unless there's technical limitations/budget restraints I see no reason to not dual-release it.
If it's a handheld, Nintendo should do a large press event. They need to capture the attention of 3DS owners as, let's be honest, outside of fans they are Nintendo's only market.
If it's a console... then I'm not sure. Nintendo could go with a press event and try to make waves. Unfortunately for them, the crowd that it seems they're trying to capture (via social media etc) has moved on and would just think "Huh, cool, a new Wii.". Doing a large press event could either be a fantastic idea... or a horrible mistake. For consoles, Nintendo's only current market is die-hard fans. I've got multiple friends who bought Wii Us around launch only to play them once or twice for Nintendo Land (ironically mirroring the Wii and Wii Sports).
If Nintendo is targeting casuals, and it's a console... well good luck to them. A safer bet would be that Nintendo aims for their hardcore players, in which case a "Nintendo NX Direct" is totally fine. Certain game announcements make it seem like the NX is a console... but all leaks point towards a handheld.
I mean, it was OK... YWW was fun but tbh I'll probably only get Poochy. SMM without online seems... weird to me. Plus the Direct was basically the final nail in the Wii U's coffin.

Re: Minecraft Update Removes References Of Its Creator From The Game
@Sandro89 oh yeah for sure i'm offended, offended that this site's community can be this abhorrent with regards to trans people
for a site i've frequented for years at this point it's incredibly disappointing to see
Re: Minecraft Update Removes References Of Its Creator From The Game
@CrazyMetroid did you really just "facts don't care about your feelings" me
transphobia is not facts
this is literally an article based around notch being removed likely due to his racist/transphobic twitter rants
Re: Minecraft Update Removes References Of Its Creator From The Game
@5ony the attitudes here are concerning to say the least. sucks tbh, i thought this site and its community were chill, not transphobic
Re: Minecraft Update Removes References Of Its Creator From The Game
@Charlie_Girl the stuff people are saying here is a real shame. never thought a Nintendo site would be this bad!
Re: Minecraft Update Removes References Of Its Creator From The Game
good. he's an arsehole.
sucks to see transphobia here.

Re: Gaming Analysts Predict 'Switch Pro' And 'Switch Lite' Revisions For 2019
Not happening. Nintendo won't fragment the ecosystem this soon - especially with the modularity of the Switch (Joy Cons, Labo etc etc)

While this is good news for Nintendo, I still doubt the Switch will outsell the PS4 globally.

Re: Huawei Is Launching A New Gaming Phone To Rival The Switch, And It Costs Over $1,000
@MasterJay tbh I don't think Apple could pull off a console, they tried recently with the Apple TV and that just fell apart
Re: Huawei Is Launching A New Gaming Phone To Rival The Switch, And It Costs Over $1,000
at least it's not an iPhone 😁

I'd rather see Sony knocked out if anyone.

@FragRed The Amazon Fire TV was a success wasn't it? As were Chromebooks.

Of course, it's tradition.
Re: FIFA 19 Officially Confirmed For Nintendo Switch, Launches This September
Good sign of support, even if it is just FIFA. Wii U only got one IIRC.

I'm guessing it'll release during the E3 Direct.

Panic Button did Octodad for Wii U as well, right? And Astro Duel Deluxe?

Nintendo will launch the NX before revealing it. Upon purchase you're given a mystery box. What's inside? You'll find out.

WarioWare. Of course.

@Luffymcduck (#282) Didn't they say it would launch in 100 countries...?
Re: Video: Check Out Some Official Footage of Super Mario Run
If it supports the iPad Pro it's the first Mario game in 2K.
And it isn't on a Nintendo console.

Guys. It's level based.
I'll get it. Looks good.

Re: Talking Point: What Approach Should Nintendo Take With Its NX Reveal?
It all depends on the system.
If it's a handheld, Nintendo should do a large press event. They need to capture the attention of 3DS owners as, let's be honest, outside of fans they are Nintendo's only market.
If it's a console... then I'm not sure. Nintendo could go with a press event and try to make waves. TL;DR:
Handheld+Casuals=Event/Viral
Handheld+Hardcore=Direct
Console+Casuals= ...?
Console+Hardcore=Direct
