Sigh. It's a tabloid, the only type of publication now known exclusively for irresponsible sensationalist journalism. To me, the best medicine for this kind of misinformation is education on the real facts — any attention the Sun gets is positive for them.
It's not going to be a masterpiece, but it'll be a nice bit of schlock to hold us over until Zelda U. I'm glad @Damo is establishing the right set of expectations to go in with; Zelda hasn't had a knockoff fanservice-y game like this yet, so some people might be crushed.
@Cresartist I think it sums up why Nintendo fans feel the way they do about the company in a single image. At least for me, video games have always been more than just an "industry." When really done right, they can be magical, artistic, hilarious, insightful, and inspiring, and Nintendo has been the primary teacher of all of this. Miyamoto-san has brought smiles to the faces of millions of children, and seeing those two little boys experience his whimsy firsthand is in itself kind of a split-second nostalgia trip.
@smikey Whoops, you're right! I'm in the US, as should be obvious now, so I just went by the 'Nintendo Download' updates as you mentioned. Thanks for the correction!
@rjejr The original was rated E10+ for Fantasy Violence, Mild Blood, Suggestive Themes, and Use of Alcohol. I'm sure we'll see a comparable rating for this one.
@AcesHigh73 The information we got from DrinkBox directly states the release date as 2nd July — I know games generally release on Mondays in Europe and Thursdays in North America, but since this is releasing simultaneously in both regions it just sort of falls between them.
EDIT: Nevermind, games release on Thursdays on both regions. I'm full of it. -JM
@Prof_Clayton As a writer, I don't hold any power to represent the views of the site or its editorial staff; I just report on game news and cool Mario action figures. That said, I personally believe this community — probably the best Nintendo-dedicated platform around — has had some meaningful, intelligent discussion about video games as an industry and even as art. It's best to allow discussion until one is absolutely certain that the subject cannot be discussed respectfully.
@Spoony_Tech The reason people see leaving the comments open as a "mistake" is precisely because the issue is not clear cut — and, as with other subject matter, is quite sensitive. As you said, you don't see the use of fictional characters in provocative situations as "the same," but I think it's fair to say a number of people disagree and find it quite objectionable. That said, as long as the discussion remains on the issue, and more importantly respectful, it should be allowed to remain open.
Hell yeah, Persona. The series is massively popular over there, so this should help 3DS momentum quite a bit moving forward. Also, it's Persona. Need I say more?!
@2Sang The market definitely represents the "superior product," in that it usually reflects products which have had the most effective marketing. On the other hand, being a "product" is only one facet of something's worth; as cited, Twilight — even with sky-high sales numbers — is a schlocky, unintelligent pile of dung. On the other hand, some low-budget indie films may be ignored by the general public but contain high artistic merit and even wonderful entertainment value.
My point is that if we only allow sales numbers to dictate what is "superior," we end up with a lot of phoned-in products and cheap imitations looking to flood the market with similar (usually lame) ideas. As of now, the video game market is full of me-too products with enormous marketing campaigns and bazillion-dollar budgets that, in the end, do little to change the way we think about our entertainment. Do we have to change? No, but a stagnant industry is a great indicator of a broken industry.
As is evident according to my avatar, I love Majora's Mask. Beyond the mask system, I'd just love to see the Zelda series explore the darker themes of MM again in some way. I never thought I'd be so emotionally impacted by a blocky little N64 game.
Nice! I really like how frequently Nintendo is updating Miiverse. It's clear they're taking a detailed look into how people are using the service and constantly hoping to improve the user experience.
@DestinyMan It doesn't have to be a Mario Kart title; while I did suggest such an idea in the article, I agree it would obviously be better as a differently (perhaps separately) branded opportunity — or, as others have suggested, it would serve well as optional DLC to supplement a Mario Kart game (thereby keeping the focus on the red plumber himself). With this being the month of Mario Kart, this seemed like an appropriate framing device — as I said before, it's more theoretical than a demand for Nintendo to make exactly what I say.
@Hy8ogen Harvest Moon 64/BtN were the best of the original titles, no doubt. The 3D ones are so mind-bogglingly slow and I still can't figure out how Animal Parade managed to not be widescreen in 2008/2009.
@Nabecoat Naw, I meant Poo. The dude from Mother. But I can see that it looks a bit bizarre out of context
@absuplendous I wasn't so much going for dismissive as asking others to at least give the idea a second thought, but I see what you mean. Regardless, this is definitely a theoretical opinion piece — take it for what you will, and feel free to disagree (as you have)! After all, this stuff is SUPPOSED to inspire discussion, and you make a solid point about the series losing its identity in transition. I'd never claim to know what's best for Nintendo's illustrious franchises.
@absuplendous I wasn't poo-pooing anyone with a dissenting opinion, so I'm sorry it came across that way to you. This is merely a fun piece speculating on what benefit Mario Kart might gain from adding additional worlds to its roster; the parts you're referencing are to assure people that Nintendo could find a way to handle such a risky idea. By no means am I demanding people agree with me — it's a proposal that meets a lot of resistance for some pretty understandable reasons.
@Hy8ogen While Natsume's localization work has gotten better in recent years, their dialogue tends to go the route of near-direct translation without actually adding any personality. XSeed makes sure to localize the dialogue as well as translate it, whether that means adding colorful quirks to each individual or even sly references to other game franchises. Again, some people might not notice or care, but I think a game like HM (where the characters are very important) will only benefit from having XSeed take the reins. Just my take!
@TopLaytonsHat I assume Marvelous would rather have one of their own subsidiaries doing the localization rather than paying an outside company. Also, not to sound biased or anything, but XSeed's Rune Factory 4 work absolutely blew Natsume's usual localization out of the water (just my opinion, of course).
@Philip_J_Reed Your Mega Man reviews are the best. I went back and read all your pieces for the other Game Boy titles as well as the earlier NES ones, and they're really thorough. I'm not a huge fan of the games (mostly 'cause I suck at them), but your stuff made me want to give them another look. Seriously great work, dude.
Kind of wish the color scheme were reversed (green face and white buttons). Or maybe a sea green back, at the very least. As-is, the name isn't particularly accurate.

@Damo Yeah, what @Hyperstar96 said is true. This was a 50% increase, if it was doubled it would have increased 100%.
