Re: Feature: Tales From the Front Line of amiibo Collecting

HollywoodHogan

@ShikabaneHime13

I don't doubt that people are buying up huge lots of these toys, but I do doubt the truth of these stories.

These tales sound almost completely fabricated though. The conversations described don't sound like ones that ever took place. That whole exchange between the kid and the store manager sounds totally unnatural.

Re: Feature: Tales From the Front Line of amiibo Collecting

HollywoodHogan

Is it just me, or do most of these stories sound like complete BS?

A guy riding a bike around a store grabbing amiibos, a kid wearing a Captain Falcon mask, a store manager buying up the entire supply (and telling the customer about her son's doctor appointment)?

An article posted that almost entirely consists of anonymous copy & pastings from various forums with no evidence any of it is true?

The journalistic standards of NL never cease to amaze!

Re: New Nintendo 3DS Launch Sales in the West Surpass 3DS XL Equivalents

HollywoodHogan

@rjejr

"Basically that graph is a piece of dreck and the numbers it represents are meaningless. At least as I understand it, hopefully I'm reading it all wrong."

Pretty much.

All they are doing is comparing the sales of an unestablished console (the 3DSXL, which was released when the console was still finding its footing) to an updated revision of a now popular console. The numbers are meaningless.

It's like Apple bragging that the iPhone 6 is outselling the iPhones 1-3. Ya....big shocker there.

Nintendo are the masters of releasing sales data that sounds impressive based on how they word it, when in actuality it is not that great, i.e. "It sold 200% more units than last month" (not mentioning that the previous month only sold 1000) or "sales are up 50% compared to this quarter last year" (not mentioning that the quarter they are comparing it to was the worst in their companies history).

The sales of this new console are alright, but the way Nintendo worded it makes it sound much more impressive than it actually is.

Remember when the Wii U launched big and then sales quickly tapered off?

Be prepared, folks...

"If the software (games) keeps getting stolen, then the developers stop making it."

Piracy has been rampant in console video gaming since for well over a decade now.

Can you please give me one example of a developer that has stopped making games due to piracy? And I'm not talking about some tiny bedroom studio, I'm talking about those big powerful developers that are most affected by people stealing their games. Nintendo, Ubisoft, Rockstar, Capcom, somebody of that stature.

What game developer has gone out of business because of piracy?

Re: January NPD Results Bring Improvement for Wii U and Top 10 Sales for Super Smash Bros.

HollywoodHogan

@StarDust4Ever

Most older games, covering all genres, can be found in the bargain bin today, princess. It's not just limited to sports titles (though they are the most prevalent).

As for the other guy questioning who buys sports games? Try finding a college/university dorm room in North America who doesn't have a copy of an NHL/NBA/NFL game in it. Growing up I can't remember a single friend (or myself) either who didn't own at least one EA sports game on their Genesis or SNES.

I know some diehards buy the same sports title annually, but I think most people only buy one every other year or so. And as mentioned already, the games are sports simulations. There isn't much room for change other than adding new modes, players and some tweaks to the game engine for every release.

@Sugar_Crunch_BD

Not trolling.

I find the fact that people follow the 'careers' of people who play video games very bizarre. Maybe watching a youtube video to see how one of the top players does it? Ok, that could be interesting. But to know/care anything at all about their personal lives (name, history, feuds, etc)? No thanks. In fact, I couldn't think of someone LESS interesting to follow than somebody who dedicates their lives to sitting inside and playing a video game for thousands of hours.

And yes, I do get the girls, but not all of them

Re: Meet Playtonic, A Studio Of Ex-Rare Staff That Wants To Work With Nintendo

@Sherman

HAHAHAHA!

I am a huge AIC fan, and love Soundgarden as well.

Their newest albums don't come close to being as good as their older records from the early to mid-90's. Not even in the same realm.

Horrible example.

Are the Rolling Stones as good today as they were in 1966? How about Aerosmith? Van Halen? Mötley Crüe? Do Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, Bob Dillon, and Neil Young write songs today that can hold a candle to their classic works? No. Even more contemporary bands like Guns N Roses and Stone Temple Pilots cant even recreate the success of their recent past.

If you think the new AIC albums featuring a replacement signer are as good as their old ones with the original lineup....I don't really know what to say.

Pretending that Miyamoto still has the same influence and is the creative force he once was in the 80's-90's is laughable.

Re: Meet Playtonic, A Studio Of Ex-Rare Staff That Wants To Work With Nintendo

HollywoodHogan

@ikki5

"Look at Miyamoto, Aonuma, Koizumi, They are all old they they still create the magic that they once did 20 years ago plus many more. "

20 years ago those guys had their hands in everything. Nowadays their roles are basically looking over another game developers shoulder and saying 'ya that looks good, but maybe add some of this...'. If you think any of those guys are pulling all nighters and putting in 80hr work weeks getting games made like they did in the past, you are very naive. They are largely figureheads today. Other guys are doing all the programming and the 'heavy lifting' now. There's a whole new generation of talent at Nintendo who are making the games we play now, and will be in the future.

"This is why you don't see anything great from them after the N64 Era because Microsoft owned Rare then and controlled them."

They had plenty of chances to make good games, like Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, Perfect Dark and others, and they were all largely forgettable and nowhere near the quality of their past titles. Microsoft also owned Bungie, and they managed to somehow make quality games like the Halo series, so saying that the only reason they couldn't make good games was because of Microsoft isn't true at all.

Nintendo had a chance to buy Rare first, but didn't, as they saw the writing on the wall that the magic was gone. This has been discussed a million times elsewhere.

And I hate to break it to you, but many people are their most creative in their twenties and thirties. I'm not sure if a bunch of 40-50+ year old guys trying to rekindle the Rare spirit are going to have much left anymore.

Re: Meet Playtonic, A Studio Of Ex-Rare Staff That Wants To Work With Nintendo

HollywoodHogan

@ikki5

In the subsequent years after their N64 success did they produce any games that came close to the same levels of creative success as then? No. So why do you believe they are going to recapture that same quality and magic now?

They are all old men now, people change.

I'm interested in what they are going to do, but I won't allow myself to get diamond hard about it because it will most likely be a let down

Re: Meet Playtonic, A Studio Of Ex-Rare Staff That Wants To Work With Nintendo

HollywoodHogan

Rare is dead. Get over it folks!

This will be like a reunion of an aged rock band. You get a warm fuzzy feeling that the old gang is back together, but what they put out now is nowhere near as good as the music they created when they were younger.

Can these guys make a decent game? Maybe. Will it be on par with Banjo or any of the stuff they produced 15+ years ago? Highly unlikely.

Re: Weirdness: This Video Uses Super Mario Bros. 2 to Illustrate the Consequences of Capitalism

@hiptanaka

"If an issue is relevant, bring it up! (In this case, though, again, there is no relevance.)"

I should clarify my statement.

Ok, we both agree this article is trash. There is no link whatsoever between the topic of discussion and Super Mario. It's lame, and the author and website editor should be ashamed.

I think if there IS a real link for a discussion though, like how someone in a game is portrayed, that should be fair game for comments. This one however has gone completely off the rails and has NOTHING to do with either video games or Nintendo.

Re: Weirdness: This Video Uses Super Mario Bros. 2 to Illustrate the Consequences of Capitalism

HollywoodHogan

@hiptanaka

Because this is a website to discuss NINTENDO GAMES, not those other issues. If I want to discuss those other issues, I will go to a news website or a site specific to religious/gender/political discussions.

Do you think if someone posted a video on a pro-gay forum that explained, using Nintendo characters, why homosexuality is bad (not my belief) that the users there would then be arguing in the comments section about what Nintendo game is the best? No. They would be discussing the message in the video, which is the basis of their site. Discussing news and issues pertaining to the gay community.

So why is a website dedicated to video games (specifically Nintendo) looking to stir a debate about religion and capitalism? It's stupid and makes no sense.

I didn't mean that as an insult or for you to leave, I just wanted to tell you it's not a good idea to share personal/sensitive information online with someone who doesn't know you, and who frankly, sounds like a jerk.

Stick around. Most people on this website seem to be nice and will treat you with respect and show interest in your games.
