Re: Talking Point: Metroid Prime 4 And The Burden Of Being 'Good Enough'

GrizzledVeteran

A few things going on here for me personally and I realize each person has a different experience.....Only speaking for myself.

I got Metroid on NES for Christmas in 1987. Beat it and "discovered" the big twist organically (not on the playground, not in Nintendo Fun Club newsletter, etc.). That is to say two things: 1. I'm old and 2. I have loved Metroid for almost 40 years.

Gamed all my life, had played every Metroid multiple times. Not a SUPER fan per say (I game on all systems and Mario, Zelda are closer to my heart when it comes to Nintendo.).

I have outgrown Metroid. This release cements that. Reason being, I played Dread a few years ago with my kids who are now 15 and 13. For Christmas this year, they had zero interest in Prime 4.

I had to come to the realization that as hard as I tried, I think I've moved on from the franchise. Will always love the series, its history, my many memories of it, etc.. But.... I checked Prime 4 out from the library. It sat on our entertainment center for a week and nobody even bothered to take it out of its case. Zero interest.

I've rambled too long. I sincerely hope many people find enjoyment from this game. As the saying goes, it's me, not you, Metroid. I guess I'm just getting old.

Re: Nintendo Survey Asks Switch 2 Users About Their Experience So Far

GrizzledVeteran

My Switch 2 Journey so far:

1. Elated/relieved to have gotten pre-order in at Target.
2. Surprised my sons with the system upon arrival.
3. Happy with it.....yet underwhelmed at the same time.
4. We (mostly) play docked so battery life hasn't been an issue (however reports of 2 hours? are atrocious).
5. After a decade(?) of Mario Kart 8 going back to playing the hell out of it on Wii-U, Mario Kart World just isn't doing it for me.
6. Looking ahead; Most of these ports don't interest me. I'm trying to get excited for DK Bananza...but....
7. We are Switch Online subscribers and Wind Waker was fun to start, but I personally prefer the HD version.
8. Wondering what Nintendo has in store for the holiday season. Galaxy 3? Odyssey 2? Something new?

In conclusion: No regrets. Glad I purchased it, but it hasn't been an exciting experience. I was telling my wife it's the least excited I've been for a new Nintendo console/handheld in my life, and I'm including my first console in that recollection (ColecoVision) because it came with Donkey Kong. But the NES for Christmas 87 will never be topped. Guess I'm just getting old(er).
ColecoVision: Almost too young to remember.
NES: Magical Christmas (cemented my Nintendo fandom for life).
SNES: First paycheck from first job.
N64: College days: Goldeneye and MarioKart magic.
Gameboy Color: Bought while overseas
Gamecube: Bought in Japan. Gamestore broke streetdate on my pre-order because he knew I was American and felt bad about September 11th.
Gameboy Advance SP: Pre-ordered at 7-11 in Japan, FF Tactics special edition.
Wii: Didn't buy at launch. Life was busy. I was in graduate school.
Wii U: Bought not long after buying first house.
3DS: Bought on launch day (ambassador!) and one month before birth of first child. Maybe my favorite Nintendo system ever.
Switch: Arrived on launch day from Best Buy. This system helped raise my sons and will be looked back as their childhood system.
Switch 2: Arrived from Target. Thoughts above.

Didn't mention GBA, DS and Virtual Boy only because I can't really remember. I think I bought VB on discount from Toys R Us. I have a couple of them. And I went through so many DSs and Gameboy Advances I can't remember them all.

Re: Feature: How Do Game Developers And Artists Feel About The Rise Of AI Art?

GrizzledVeteran

@theModestMouse
Agreed 100%. It's mind-boggling. And while others have mentioned the lack of "intention" from an artists' perspective, that means nothing to me as a viewer who only judges art by its impact on me as a viewer. Not slamming those who have cited the lack of intention. Just saying I couldn't care less.

Again, experimenting with these programs is mind-boggling. The possibilities are infinite and the time it takes is miniscule. Experiencing art elicits all kinds of responses from me. AI-generated art is no different. Listening to haters and nay-sayers reminds me of the late 90s when folks would swear they'd never buy anything off the internet. AI art is here. Too late.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Duel - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles In Time

GrizzledVeteran

I prefer the friendly looking turtles on the Japanese cover.

HOWEVER, it looks like a "Turtles USA" cover or something with that Statue of Liberty occupying the center top.

The North American/European cover on the other hand has that excellent time-warpy thing going on. Love the train, dinosaur, and pirate ship as they really communicate the level diversity to expect from a time-hopping game.

I chose the NA/E one this week, despite my preference for those smiling Japanese turtles.

Re: Talking Point: How Were You Introduced To Metroid?

GrizzledVeteran

Metroid
Received for Christmas in 1987.

It's fun telling my kids that there was a (brief) time when nobody knew Samus was a woman. That myself and their uncle (my brother) found out by beating it quickly.

I still have it! Including the instruction manual that refers to Samus as "he".

Favorite Metroid to date is Super Metroid followed by Zero Mission. Love the Primes but my heart is with the 2D games.

Re: Review: Immortals Fenyx Rising - An Off-Brand Breath Of The Wild That's Still Worth A Look

GrizzledVeteran

Breath of the Wild came out almost 4 years ago!

Breath of the Wild 2 (or whatever they'll end up calling it) will probably come out 2 years from now (after a few delays) on the Switch 2 or Switch Pro or whatever...

To be honest I'd rather try this game out than start yet another playthrough of Breath of the Wild. Beat it many times many years ago. I'm excited to try something new and I appreciate that Ubisoft's lack of originality will actually end up scratching an itch Nintendo hasn't touched in years.

To me, "Borrows too heavily from Breath of the Wild" should be moved from "cons" to "pro".

Re: Netflix's The Last Kids On Earth Is Getting A Family-Friendly Zombie Game On Switch

GrizzledVeteran

@nessisonett Lol about kid's shows today. I couldn't agree more with your statements. My wife and I always joke about the shows we grew up on in the 80s being glorified commercials (Transformers) or propaganda of some kind (G.I. Joe). Outdated, potentially culturally insensitive, not inclusive/diverse by today's standards, etc. etc.

Then our sons (aged 7 and 9) discovered this show on Netflix and we burst out laughing. May as well make a "Walking Dead Jr." at this point.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #68 - Super Mario World

GrizzledVeteran

@impurekind I really like your well-reasoned comment. It's funny, I went with the NA cover based on nostalgia, but also just the fact that blue is personally more pleasing to my eyes. But I do like the picture and layout of the Japanese one better. You mention a poster and I mostly agree with you; I'd love a poster of the Japanese art but with blue replacing the yellow background.

On that very topic: I have a poster of the original SNES Mario Kart artwork, however it has the yellow-sky background of the Japanese box. I always thought it'd look better with the more blue background of the North American (and European) boxart. Kind of a pattern with me I guess. Lol.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Duel #60 - Metroid: Other M

GrizzledVeteran

I was in Japan when "Other M" was released. I still have some marketing materials that are basically brochures they have at electronic shops such as Bic Camera.

The thing that stuck out to me in this marketing material: It's like a 5 page mini-art book, all glossy and nice. There are very detailed "history" and "timeline" sections for the Metroid series. They completely ignore the "Prime" series. I mentioned this to my Japanese friend who was with me and he laughed and explained the "bad foreign taste" of the Prime series.

Oh and regarding the poll: I voted for the Japanese box art. Simply beautiful.

Re: Feature: Keeping It Physical In A Digital Age

GrizzledVeteran

I like buying digital for the convenience. However I'm frugal with my gaming purchases and I rarely buy games when they first release. Instead, I wait for a price drop.

Usually (but not always) the physical version will drop in price before its digital equivalent. In that case, I go with the physical to save money.

I used to love Physical because I appreciated a good instruction manual. But I'm finding that if I really love a game and its assets, there are usually art books available. That's what I did with Assassin's Creed Odyssey: Bought the digital version for Xbox but purchased "The Art of Assassin's Creed Odyssey" book for dirt cheap off Amazon.

Re: Soapbox: There's No Shame In Playing On Easy, Even If You're A Pro

GrizzledVeteran

For a gamer in his mid-40s, the REAL "Hard-Mode" is just finding the time to ACTUALLY play a game.

Okay I just took the time to read Mr. Scullion's full op-ed. I agree with it. I'm a little bit older than the author and, like him, have been gaming since "pre-NES" days.

These days: Full time career, a couple of mortgages, keeping the wife and two young kids happy and healthy...... The last thing I have these days is time.

15 years ago I was still plugging away on harder difficulties, but I just don't have the time to commit these days. So many games and awesome worlds/stories to experience, so little time. So yeah, sometimes "easy mode" is a must, even if my younger self wouldn't have done so.

Can still knock Tyson out in the 2nd round (no modern tools like save-states required).

Can still beat the original Castlevania without losing a life.

It's not like I couldn't master harder difficulties if I had the time....but I don't. That's life.

I'm just thankful there are options so people can decide for themselves.

Re: Random: Some Of Microsoft's New 'Designed For Xbox' Controllers Look Pretty Familiar

GrizzledVeteran

Nintendo has always innovated with their controllers, so much so that their features become industry standards (d-pad, analogue control sticks, rumble, wireless wavebird, etc.).

However Microsoft really nailed the dimensions (form, function, button placement) with their original Xbox controller (not the first huge one called "The Duke".) So much so that it hasn't really changed during the 360, Xbox One, and now Series X generations.

To me, the Switch Pro Controller's form and function resembles this standard (more so than the Gamecube with its yellow "camera stick").

Nice to see the PS5's Dualsense has adopted this too (although they're not going with offset analogue sticks.)

Re: Poll: No, Really, What Was Nintendo's Worst Year?

GrizzledVeteran

@Crockin Hey Crockin, I like your list, but this poll if opinion based, right? And yes, those games you mentioned were spread out. And while I wasn't a fan of many of them (Blast Corps, Bomber Man), or was finished in like one or two days with others (Star Fox 64), or was COMPLETELY let down by (Yoshi's Story.....after just finishing SNES's Yoshi's Island, was personally a letdown) I was starved heading into that holiday season. My memory is colored by the fact I was in college living with 5 roommates who were all Playstation fans. They had some cool games that holiday and "Diddy Kong Racing" was announced to fill the hole left by delays. I was still frustrated that Ocarina of Time had just been delayed out of 1997. It was a crappy holiday season to be a N64 gamer for me (again, I like your list from a historical gaming perspective), but for me personally, 1997 was not awesome.

Re: Poll: No, Really, What Was Nintendo's Worst Year?

GrizzledVeteran

1997 was the worst. There was nothing. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING scheduled for the holiday season during the Nintendo 64's (well documented) game drought(s).

If people on here think the Wii U days were bad, they didn't live through the N64.

Anyways, whatever had been scheduled for holiday 1997 was delayed into 98 (and beyond).

However, 1997 became the year that Rare saved Christmas for Nintendo fans: They brought Diddy Kong Racing seemingly out of nowhere. THAT was Nintendo's holiday release. It was a "surprise title" that seemingly came out of nowhere. A game so similar to Mario Kart......

So glad it's not like that anymore. Remember, there was NO eshop or indies to pad out a library.

Re: Reminder: Ubisoft Forward Airs Today - An "E3-Style" Showcase Featuring News, Reveals And Much More

GrizzledVeteran

@Patendo "Gods & Monsters" has gone through significant changes. I believe to the point that they're even going to change its name. I believe Ubisoft mentioned this not long ago after those gameplay leaks came out (about a month ago?)

They also said they'd share information regarding this title in "late summer" so I'm guessing late August.

I'm right there with you: I can't wait to see more! It has been one of my most anticipated Ubi games!

Re: Can You Match These Links To The Zelda Game They're From?

GrizzledVeteran

Shouldn't number 3 specifically be the "GAMECUBE" version of Twilight Princess? Not "GC/Wii" as is stated.

In the picture, Link is using his left hand to hold the sword. He couldn't do this in the Wii version, correct?

I could be wrong.

I know it's nit-picky, but this is a Nintendo-fansite after all.

Re: Guide: Where To Buy Ring Fit Adventure For Nintendo Switch

GrizzledVeteran

A bit of advice (in terms of Best Buy in the US):

KEEP CHECKING!

I was able to order one at 2:35pm (pacific standard time)

They were out of stock by 2:44pm (pacific standard time)

And now they're BACK IN STOCK at 3:42pm (pacific standard time)

So even the "out of stock" message isn't necessarily a "game over". Check periodically and you may get lucky.

On a side-note: I'm so tired of Nintendo's lack of availability. I've been playing this game with them since ancient times(!) when I couldn't get my hands on a copy of Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link due to the "chip shortage". Some things never change....
