Re: Soapbox: What Makes A Game A Good Metroidvania Anyway?

Grahamthecracker

Tight controls for the platforming and combat is very essential. The quality control on Hollow Knight has made me retroactively dislike Metroidvanias that I’d previously enjoyed.
Also, and this may be controversial in this conversation, but having a lot of options open to you. Yes gear gating is a necessary part of the formula but something that I didn’t even know about in Hollow Knight is how non linear it actually is. I was comparing notes with a friend of mine and our maps were very different despite being a similar percentage done. Another time I had put the game down for a few weeks and came back to it and I was lost so I tried a walkthrough and the walkthrough didn’t line up to my play through either so was actually unhelpful and at that point it was clear just how special that game is. It might even be the only one to have that kind of freedom, I don’t know, but it just amazes me that there was standard gear gating and some level of non linearity at the same time.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Business Remains Strong, But Is The Bloom Off Switch Lite?

Grahamthecracker

I’d pay a bit of a premium if they gave me a Switch Lite+ or something. The portability of the lite is so good but I’d like it to have the “switch” functionality. Also it feels so much more stable without the Joy-Cons wiggling that little bit especially when things get intense. Like I’ll take a Switch Lite that I can plug into my TV and the use my Pro controller.

Re: Five Years Later, Nintendo's Lawsuit Against 'White Cat Project' Has Finally Been Settled

@CactusMan this mobile game tells you to use a wrist strap to control it on a phone that doesn’t come with a wrist strap? If you click on the link it’s just referencing using a touch screen as a controller not specifically the wrist strap. “ One of these patents is said to involve operating a joystick over the touch panel, presumably referring to the Nintendo DS Wrist Strap which allowed players to use the touchscreen as a joystick thanks to its thumb pad.” that’s the original quote from the other article they’re just referencing the time that Nintendo uses this patent prominently.

@Ham-n-jam yeah this is the part that’s confusing to me. Almost every 3D mobile phone game uses some sort of touch joystick control scheme, what makes this one so similar that they made a lawsuit out of it? I wanna know what the other patent infringements are. They’re probably super technical but it just seems weird how high profile this case got and the “most relevant” patent we see is a control scheme that thousands of mobile games use.

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo Switch Online's Library Is A Snapshot Of '90s Gaming Shelves

Grahamthecracker

I’m digging the oddball games I just don’t understand why they don’t have some of the touchstone Virtual Console games and/or the ones that were on the, now discontinued, mini consoles. Like it seems to me a lot of the work is done already why put more effort into getting oddball games when you already have the library of the mini consoles running in HD that could be on this service. I know it’s not as simple as copy/paste but surely it must be less work to translate from the mini console to the Switch than it is to start from nothing the way they are with some of these titles.

Re: Review: Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights - A Metroidvania With A Stunning World To Discover

Grahamthecracker

As long as they’re good give me more. I’ve heard amazing things about this game. Hollow Knight is one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had it’s so good and controls so tightly. I just finished the first Ori game and can’t wait to start the second.
This kind of reminds me of some of the GBA Castlevanias or Bloodstained where certain abilities would summon a creature to do just a quick attack. It’s an interesting idea to have that be the main attacking method.

Re: Soapbox: Game Genres Are Broken

Grahamthecracker

@Ryu_Niiyama yea it means expensive but there’s also a certain specificity to it though. Like it’s used foe things that are big flashy crowd pleasers. It’s more of a flavor of game than genre though you can’t just be like yeah this is a AAA game you do need to say AAA FPS to describe Call of Duty for example.

Re: Soapbox: Is It Time For Game Rental Stores To Return?

Grahamthecracker

@Gs69 this is exactly my problem with it. This is my problem with modern gaming as a whole.
I have the disc version of a game I should be able to put that in my system and play it. I shouldn’t have to wait an hour and half for it to install the full game on the system’s hard drive and then another hour or two updating to the latest patch especially if I’m playing a single player experience.

Re: Talking Point: Why Did Nintendo Give Up On Its 'Classic Edition' Concept So Soon?

Grahamthecracker

The N64 mini was the one I was truly excited for…
That being said I think the biggest missed opportunity with these minis was making them so closed off. I thought it would’ve been absolutely brilliant if they connected to the internet and had a store where you could buy more games. I’m sure this would open the door to jailbreaks and hacks but those happened anyway. But if they made these into physical Virtual Consoles!? With original aesthetics, original controllers sign me up baby! I would’ve spent double the amount by buying games that they’d already ported to Wii and Wii U.
Edit: I know their online service provides the classic games and you can buy the controllers but they haven’t ported all of the games that were on the Mini Consoles and certainly not the ones that they’d ported to the Virtual Console and that’s what I find most frustrating.
