After Level-5's wonderful cult classic Fantasy Life came out on 3DS, and blew us all away with its depth, heart, and charm, it was a little disappointing to find out that the sequel would be a mobile-only game called Fantasy Life Online. It was even more disappointing to find out that it was only destined for release in Japan.
However, alongside the news that Level-5 will be closing down the servers for the Japanese version of the game on December 15th, the news broke that publisher Boltrend Games picked up Fantasy Life Online for a Western release.
The game's story is set in Reveria, the continent on which the original game takes place, and features all 12 jobs (or "lives") that Fantasy Life had. It's a more mobile-game take on the story, of course, with rewards, progression, and a story that are more closely tied to dailies and limited-time in-game events, as well as the additional elements of building a village and multiplayer.
Fantasy Life Online is a freemium game, which means that it's free to play and download, but contains in-app purchases. Players can buy currencies and passes that will cost anywhere from a dollar or two, all the way up to $100+. You'll receive rewards for downloading the game, too: a Divine Summon Coin, 5 Medium XP Orbs, and 2,000 Dosh (the currency of the game).
Fantasy Life Online held a closed beta for English-speaking players between late October and early November, and now the release date is finally here. The game is available to pre-download now from the iOS App Store and the Play Store on Android, and services will go live at 6pm PT / 9pm ET (Dec 6th) and 2am GMT (Dec 7th).
To find out more about the game, and the events within the first few weeks of the servers being live, check out the official website.

Would love this on switch. Still, I may have to give this a try.
Loved Fantasy Life on the 3DS so I'll probably give this one a shot, but ultimately it's probably going to make me want to go back to the 3DS version more than anything. I'll see how much entertainment I can get out of this one as free to play.
Port to Switch & PS4, please.
I loved the original on 3DS. If only this was a real game and not a colourful spreadsheet of monetisation methods.
Just bring it to Switch, Level 5...
Meh, it's a waste of time. I'll just wait for Rune Factory 5.
Level 5 killing this off in Japan doesn't bode well for even a Japanese-exclusive sequel at this rate. I guess that's what happens when you put all your Yo-Kai eggs into one proverbial basket...
I didn't realize this was a thing, but god am I excited. FL1 was easily my favorite game on the 3DS, so seeing this be a thing just makes me so happy, even if it is a mobile game.
It's been 84 years. For real tho, loved the original. Put 24 + hours into it on the first play through.
Now that it's a freemium game it's not going to be worth playing unless you like virtual chores.
Boltrend is also publishing the western version of Atelier Online even though it's rumoured to be winding down in Japan. Hat off.
Ugh. Another great 3DS series has gone to mobile to die. Just like the Denpa Men.
i should have read the whole article. downloaded the game and now i am bumped that the servers aren't online yet
That cover looks so much like Animal Crossing Wild World's that I even thought it was until I looked closer. lol
The original game was pretty ok, not sure I would go on good, but I've spend some good time with it, albeit a major issue where the saves were not stored on the cart but on your 3DS SD Card with all the limitation that goes with: cannot be transferred to another 3DS without doing a full system transfer that really annoyed me.
But that "Online" version has always been an insult to the original game.
I will only imagine the awful ways they monetize this game. Fantasy Life was amazing and a game my brothers and I talk about still.
This game is really good. And not like ... good for mobile type good, it's just really good.
It has all the charm of the original and the village building aspect is a great addition.
Great to see it finally coming to the west. Not surprised, this game has been a pretty big hit in Japan.
@nessisonett @ATaco @Halucigens @Godzil
Have any of you played it?
I would love for a Switch sequel but even a port of this free to play would be pretty cool.
@EmmatheBest
Haha, what are you basing that on? It baffles me when people just make stuff up like it's impossible to verify how FOS they are.
10k+ active users a day after 3 years, monthly updates and an 4.8 rating seems to SLIGHTLY contradict your narrative. Sure it didn't smash any records but it was and still is a very profitable and popular game.
(to be clear, I mean what are you basing the idea that a game shutting down after 3 years of success is a bad sign. That's a year more then Harry Potter got, and I think we can count on sequels until the sun burns cold. Also Layton Mystery Room is just as popular and supported as Yo-Kai.)

Great. I already have to delete a bunch of photos to get fire emblem heroes on my phone now THIS has to release at this time?!? Why do they have to change the OS requirements For FEH?😒

Looks like it wasn't great enough to keep from shutting down.
Love that you wrote an article on this, played the Japanese version and thought that you might be interested! 😉
@ATaco
Yeah I should have been clear that's not the part I'm questioning, my bad. I though it was clear enough in me using the past tense "was" a good game "was" a success, but re-reading it I can see how it wasn't that clear.
It's the part where he suggest it's a bad sign for a sequel that the game shut down after 3 years of great reviews and reasonable success. 3 yeas is pretty good for mobile game, and they wouldn't be investing in the localization if they didn't think the series had legs. It's also important to note that people in Japan can just play the global release and are being encouraged to do that, so it isn't a really great strategy to keep exclusive server up .
@HeadPirate First of all, I am a girl, if you'd read my username.
Second of all, dead game is dead, even in its home land, Japan, which probably has more Gacha gamers there than America does....probably. I've played and enjoyed even more successful mobile games in the past that have went the way of the dodo, so forgive me for not having much confidence in this one... @_@
@HeadPirate You seem quite keen on defending this game so it'd be best if I just told you that I'm biased when it comes to these freemium gacha games. Every one of these that I try from Fire Emblem to disgaea might be interesting in concept and try to replicate what makes the franchise good but the gacha mechanic tends to become such a deterrent that I fail to find any fun in them. I get told "you can do anything without having to spend money" but that comes at the expense of either my time via constant grinding or being forced to use "optimal setups" instead of the way i'd like to play. No freemium mobile version of a game that I've played in the past has ever satisfied me in the same way that just playing the main games do and from the looks of things this won't either. It looks like another daily check in chorefest.
So to answer your question...no, I haven't played it and no I don't intend to. It's all my opinion with my own bias, which we've all got and that's all good.
@EmmatheBest
I don't really care how you feel about any game and you never have to justify liking or not liking something. I just don't really like misinformation and I don't think you're doing anyone favours by speculating when you can just read Level-5s press releases in Japanize.
Japanese users can play the global release given it's not locked this like the exclusive is, so it's not even that the game is being shut down, it's that they don't see a reason to keep up 2 servers for a 3 year old game. They are encouraging players to move after apologizing that they couldn't offer the same level of service people were used to if they had to run both servers.
Also Ni No Kuni is the most profitable mobile game in Japan right now, passing Pokémon Go, so they shifted a lot of attention to that.
@ATaco
I'm not defending the game. People can have whatever opinion they want. If you're comment was "I played this and I hate it" I wouldn't have batted an eye.
What I'm commenting on is how silly it is to judge a game without playing it because you don't like the how mobile games are made for the west, and how disingenuous it is to make definitive statements without noting "keep in mind I have no idea what the game is really like or how it is monetized."
The Japanize "coin-op" system is way different from typical "big fish" model used in the West, and if this is a direct port (which it might not be ... Nintendo changes their payment scheme when they release in the West) nothing you are assuming about the game is remotely true. That doesn't mean it's good or you'll like it, it just means the things you are saying are not accurate.
I know if I had an opinion that I had formed without evidence that was incorrect (which I do. Like ... constantly), I would be grateful if someone helped inform my opinion with facts. That's all I'm doing here.
I never played the original Fantasy Life, but I'll make sure to check this out just so I can show some support to Level-5 in the west
@HeadPirate no I have not. I implied that in my post. I can imagine how they could monetize a mobile game of fantasy life. I don’t play mobile games anymore.
Fantasy Life on tue 3ds was such a surprising hit for me! I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I did, but I had a blast. (80+ hours!)
I'm hoping that if this proves successful that there may be hope for a proper console sequel.
@Cynas I recommend Kitaria Fables. It has a similar vibe.
@Meteoroid cookie run? Puzzles and dragons?
Eh, every time I try a mobile game I forget about it within days. If I hear good things I’ll give it a download but otherwise I’d prefer the to bring the original game or a sequel to the Switch.
@Meteoroid yeah but cookie run is actually very F2P friendly. Heck genshin fans migrated to cookie run kingdom because of how generous the crystal rewards are. Also ovenbreak and kingdom has a mileage system that allows you to get cookies that you want. Heck the production values for kingdom is pretty much up to 11 maybe even 12. Heck the event that’s going on is praised for being very emotional and well written. Heck they even made a few music videos for kingdom like everything you need. Cookie run is a really good franchise that cares for its players to the point that when they added in a mechanic that many people hate they got rid of said mechanic in a lot of game modes. I actually have almost every single cookie in ovenbreak and the epic rates are pretty generous in kingdom for a Gacha game. Heck your pretty much guaranteed some epics in ovenbreak. Even if you don’t want to try the games at least listen to the music in them.(seriously listen to everything you need it’s so wholesome) there’s a pretty good reason why people really like the cookie run series.
@HeadPirate I've played plenty and I mean plenty of games like this to know exactly how this one is going to turn out. If it makes you feel better I can download the game play it for an hour and see the same mechanics I always see in freemium games that drag the experience down and then come back here and give you my exact same assessment of this game.
Then again I find popular games that people love like Genshin Impact to also be absolute garbage so one can assume that I might have "bad taste" but these freemium games are always trash to me after giving so many a try. I don't even like games that do F2P "right" like Apex, so there's that. Just give me the full complete game without any extra monetization and I'll be happy. I hate the freemium business model in all its forms.
@Meteoroid i mean hey you could ask some players of cookie run if there’s pay walls. I didn’t felt like I hit any paywalls. But then again I play games like pocket camp and Mario kart tour and Pokémon masters etc.
So you might wanna ask someone who knows when paywalls appear in ovenbreak or kingdom.
I loved the 3ds game ! Endless nights playing it . I don’t like mobile games but for fantasy life I may have to give it a try.
@kducky11 Thanks, I heard about this one a few months ago and was interested but it completely fell off my radar. Will have to look back into it.
Downloading now!
This looks like one of those text based web games back in the days. No visuals only boring text.
I didn't know about that and am a little bit excited to try it! I had a blast with Fantasy Life on 3ds, and a mobile game is probably better than nothing
(But please, level 5, a sequel on switch would be amazing)
Give us a full sequel you cowards!!!
(or at the very least a port for Switch of the first one)
Blehhhhh for a second I thought the canned Level 5 X Box game True Fantasy Live Online was given a renewed chance, but alas...
Still sad that game never saw the light of day.
Mobile games aren't any good. Pass.
And then 2 years later they are ending the service. When will game devs learn?
