Re: Feature: "Astonish Is Super Effective!" - How Pokémon Taught Me To Love Words

GloverMist

Oh my god, I'm SO pleased to see someone else talk about this - the exact same thing happened with me as a kid!

I vividly remember playing Ruby for the first time, aged 7, and getting quickly stumped on 'Absorb' and 'Bide', and even 'ergo' when used by one of Prof. Birch's assistants.

In a meta sense, looking up Pokémon name meanings on Bulbapedia directly taught me the words 'etymology' and 'portmanteau'... and 20 years later, when I was teaching a class of 9-year-olds spelling today, they all remarked "etymology is always your favourite bit"! And it wouldn't have been if it weren't for Pokémon!

Re: Talking Point: How's Your Switch Holding Up After 5 Years?

GloverMist

My 2017 Switch has a slight hairline crack in its glass screen protector (thankfully not the actual screen) and I had to send my Joy-Cons in to Nintendo for drift two years ago, but aside from that, it's been as perfect as the day I got it! Still use it almost every day and haven't needed to upgrade yet! (Though I would like an OLED one, thanks.) What a wonderful little machine.

Happy 13th, Nintendo Life! Let the grumpy teenage years begin! Nah, in all seriousness, it's fantastic to see the site still going from strength to strength. Long may it last!

Re: Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu And Eevee Will Have IVs And EVs, Ditches Held Items And Abilities

GloverMist

Come on, now, is everyone gonna be so negative about this? We've gotta remember that the Gen. I that some people love didn't have Abilities or held items either. Besides, these weren't designed to be competitive battling games. Let's Go isn't going to be used for official events, Ultra Sun/Moon will. So for a casual game intended at a causal audience, this makes perfect sense.

Re: Review: Detective Pikachu (3DS)

OK, can we all not moan about how this isn't on Switch or isn't exactly how you wanted to be, or something? The smaller Japanese version of the game was started in 2013 and released in 2016, of course they're gonna keep it on 3DS for its final release. Maybe work on upscaling it in the future, but give them chance to release it as they intended.

I, for one, am happy to see my beloved 3DS get even more support, but I am very biased towards it! (But I love my Switch too!)
