Two new Doctor Who games are set to launch early next year on Nintendo Switch, it's been confirmed.
The two titles have been made by Maze Theory in partnership with BBC Studios, aiming to expand the Doctor Who interactive universe. The games are Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality, a new first-person adventure which is said to 'reimagine and build upon last year's VR experience', and Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins, a 'found phone' game which is also launching on mobile.
Here's a quick look at both new games:
Doctor Who: The Edge of Reality
With brand-new gameplay, new monsters and new worlds to explore, players will wield the Thirteenth Doctor’s sonic screwdriver on a quest to save the universe. Players will be guided by the Thirteenth Doctor, voiced by Jodie Whittaker, and joined by the Tenth Doctor, voiced by David Tennant.
The Edge of Reality features a console and PC adventure across Space and Time, built with current and next generation consoles in mind, it contains new worlds to explore, new puzzles, new challenges and new gameplay. With an original Doctor Who story, you will uncover a universe-spanning threat as you seek to save reality from a series of time-breaking glitches. Continue the story that began in The Edge of Time and partner with the Doctor to unearth a greater mystery.
Doctor Who: The Lonely Assassins
Coming to iOS, Android and Nintendo Switch, The Lonely Assassins is being developed by award-winning Malaysian studio Kaigan Games, renowned for pushing the boundaries of storytelling within mobile.
The Lonely Assassins will see players uncover and decipher the mystery of a ‘found phone’, unravelling a sinister series of events taking place at Wester Drumlins, the iconic ‘uninhabited’ home featured in the legendary Doctor Who episode Blink.
Someone is missing, and a menacing new nemesis has emerged. Players will work with Petronella Osgood and other classic characters as they get steadily closer to the truth.
There is only one rule: don't turn your back, don't look away and don't blink!
Our friends over at Push Square didn't exactly enjoy The Edge of Time on PSVR, giving it an underwhelming 4/10, so here's hoping for a better sequel that's worth your time on Switch.
Let us know if you're a Whovian in the comments below. Allons-y!
Thanks to GloverMist for the tip!

Those look bad. I did like that Blink episode though. I know it was like a decade ago now, but it was one of the really memorable ones.
I don't like Dr Who, but I've been obsessed with this bbc web browser game called Dr Who 13. It has tiles with all the actors on and you match them and make the next doctor.
I despise it, but I've been playing it for 6 months.
These look really good! I am surprised to see that both of them were being released on the Switch. I can't wait!
The show sucks now. It's really just canon trashing awful. I'll pass, but these may bring others joy
I'm assuming that these games will be free to Tv license holders?
Remember when Doctor Who was still good? Like the first three doctors after the reboot in 2005. Oh damn it but I cried so much when he left Rose in that world... I always wished he'd come back to that particular story arc later on.
And then of course there's that woke ladydoctor. I wouldn't mind a gender swap if the stories were still good, but the writing has dropped to cringeworthy levels, even for a series like doctor who which was already a bit "campy" to begin with at times.
@Moistnado
Why? These aren't what the license fee pays for.
Just makes me want a Dr Who survival horror game to be honest.
@lighteningbolt79 it's a reference to BBC iplayer I assume, which is free to TV License holders
I didn't expect to come onto here and find so many people complaining at DW being "woke" when it has been "woke" since it started. DW has always tackled issues in the real world. The only difference is that the Doctor is now played by a woman.
And generally, when people complain at bad writing, all they really mean is that they simply don't like something, but for some reason, they have to blame something/someone rather than it just being a difference in tastes.
Has there EVER been a good Doctor Who video game? The BBC are pretty half-assed when it comes to choosing devs for (console) games, the Horrible Histories Wii game was pretty rubbish too. Some of the old CBBC flash games were good though.
I'm a fan of Dr Who but not really of the video games. I think the last Nintendo console ones were a bit below average.
Obviously will "monitor" these though.
("Woke"? What? Cringey usage of the word applied here. Sorry. shudder)
Won’t waste my time on this woke infested piece of trash, Dr who ended after peter capaldi 🤪🤪
Looking forward to seeing actual Gameplay footage of 'The Edge Of Reality'.
As a Whovian I'm hoping it is good and worth buying. At least there is a Switch version coming. Much bigger developers don't even bother trying to support Switch.
Yeah, I tried watching Series 11, made it about halfway through the series, and just could not be bothered to continue watching. The companions felt as if they didn't contribute much (not necessarily a slight on the actors/actresses, just the fact that 3 at a time might not be the best idea for writing), and the stories didn't grab me. If what I heard about the finale of Series 12 is correct, I really despise the retconning they did in that too. Maybe the writing has improved since I stopped but... shrug
I know Doctor Who doesn't have a very good track record when it comes to games but these look like they could be decent so I'm cautiously optimistic for them. Nice to see Osgood again, if nothing else.
@Moistnado
They have made it in partnership with BBC Studios, which is a commercial arm of the BBC. The licence fee has nothing to do with this.
@Moistnado you fundamentally misunderstand what the licence fee and public ownership mean. Channel 4 is also publicly owned, which is a commercial channel, for some context.
The BBC has a commercial arm to exploit its output - this allows the BBC to source extra funding without having to raise licence fees. This has been paid for by that money - the profits - NOT the licence fee.
This is produced by BBC Studios, a commercial arm of the BBC. This is the part of the BBC which sells programmes to other commercial and international networks, including their own international channels which are commercial. This also covers DVD/BluRay sales and other products not covered by the licence fee - which incidentally cost a lot of money to produce. Residuals to actors and creators for ongoing broadcasts and commercial use of material, which needs to be paid for.
The television channels, radio, main non-commercial website, and iPlayer are all covered by the licence fee. That is what it pays for. Not these games.
Wow at the sexists showing themselves. Literally changing gender in DR Who was wholly possible not a leap and makes sense story wise. It’s not like changing James Bond to Jane Bond.... having a female Dr isn’t woke (although that might have been a motivation... is not being sexist now woke??)it was a way to get differrant stories.
The Change in show runner and writer is the bigger issue
@Moistnado just because a product has BBC on it doesn't mean it is funded by the license fee. They make money by selling the rights for others to broadcast their shows both domestically and internationally. Which is how projects like these games would get funded.
@Moistnado so because of that do you think they should just distribute all of their stuff internationally for free? Or should others outside of the UK not be allowed to ever see anything they produce? That would also mean all of the toys and other merchandise that has been licensed out over the years should be free despite having manufacturing costs. I think the License fee is outdated but these games were not paid for by that and you are just using this article about games to get angry about that which is completely off topic.
I've finally got a tip on this site! I so badly want these games to be good...
If the doctor doesn't have an X and y chromosome then he isn't the doctor.
@Stocksy I like Jody Whittaker, but the writing is so bad!
@Stocksy A typical anyone-who-disagrees-with-me-is-sexist (insert random -ism for the occasion) response. The fact is that the show has become more about telling people how and what to think than telling a good story. Quite frankly I don't care about the gender swap - Missy was fantastic for instance in large part due to Michelle Gomez being amazing and helped by some bloody good writing for her parts. Had the new doctor been as well-written and acted there would be few objections. That's not what happened though.
Just as the wider BBC has forgotten its mission to serve the public, favouring the woke, the remainers, the chattering classes, so Doctor Who has become the worst kind of pandering garbage, jettisoning a fanbase who kept the show alive for decades to chase the new shiny.
I've been waiting for years for a really good Doctor Who game. Looks like I'll be waiting some more.
@Moistnado you sound very naive and entitled.
The point of exploiting BBC content for profit is so that this money is reinvested back into BBC content - i.e. the very point is to give more back to the licence fee payer. This makes it a better deal for the fee payer. It's effectively a non-profit.
As for your suggestion of selling rights/licencing for toys and games - that would involve making money from licence fee payer funded projects. Which is what you're against. But you suggest it. In any case that is EXACTLY what they do... BBC Studios is the entity that commissions things like this.
Without this mechanism, the BBC could only afford to make LESS content than it does. Not that you should care as you say you don't pay it.
Some people, eh?
I gave up on Doctor Who full time when Matt Smith left. I tried to continue watching but it did seem more and more woke. I don't want to be preached to about how men are bad. I just want entertainment. Just because I do not like Jodie as the doctor doesn't mean that I'm sexist. I don't think she's good. I do think the doctor should have stayed a male, but we are in a time where the woke minority pushes an agenda on the rest of us. Why not create a new character in the Doctor Who lore to be a female doctor? That would be infinitely more interesting for me. But alas, this line of thinking will get me attacked as someone that is sexist and hates women. haha Sad that this is where we are at. The liberal few pushing around the silent majority. In other news... for those that asked if ever a Good Doctor Who game, YES! I loved Doctor Who for Lego Dimensions. Fun story!
@Moistnado please read the whole post. I am right though.
@Moistnado One day you'll grow up and realise how daft you look.
Man, I was crossing my fingers for Matt Smith, but David Tennant guesting with Jodie Whittaker will ok.
The second game looks like a spinoff with no Doctor. I dont see the appeal.
Yay for finally getting a Doctor Who game. That's some good news.
Oh I hate getting into these conversations but it's a rainy Monday so what the hey...
I've been watching Dr Who since Tom Baker in the 70's after seeing those Peter Cushing Dalek movies here in the US. Not when they released, I'm not that old, but in the 70's we all lived on bad movies on TV. So I have a decades of experience w/ Dr. Who.
I've watched every "new" episode w/ my fantasy fan wife and now 18 yo D&D playing geek son. Here's my very subjective overview w/ which they mostly concur.
First season in 2005 was a nice reboot. So long ago.
David Tennant, despite my Tom Baker fanboism, is Dr Who now, and Rose Tyler is THE companion. Bad Wolf.
Never liked Matt Smith but Riversong is a great overarching storyline tieing multiple Dr incarnations together. The Ponds grew on me and ended well.
Capaldi rode in on a tank playing a guitar 1 episode, and that was his best moment. I'm an old gray haired man like him so it isn't ageism, just too dour. He never meshed w/ Soufflé Girl.
Whitaker's first season she had 3-5 minutes in each episode where they let her play Dr Who in a Dr Who reboot that wasn't a reboot, they just wanted it to be, but you can't have it both ways. The companions were companions to each other, not her, they should have called the show "Friends Find a TARDIS" and made it a spinoff like that high school kids show I couldn't' stomach to watch past the 1st episode.
Series 12 had the Master and a huge plot twist back story. They gave the Dr some more screen time. Felt like an attempt to forget the reboot idea and make it Dr Who again. I think it was too little too late for some people but it was ok.
These games are not inspiring me to play them. Not sure there could be a game that could, it's all about the Dr Who dialogue, don't think you get that in a game. As a "vr experience" that's one thing, but a game, I'll need reviews. Many reviews.
@Moistnado that is a 100% the issue.
It’s the cavemen “bang their chest” must be a man and white crew that can’t see that. The little islanders that fear anything that doesn’t have the same flag or characteristics as them. They go round throwing insults and fearing anything they deem as change.
Pathetic really.
Dr who became rubbish coz the main man who launched the rebirth left. Nothing to do with their perceived “wokeness” sad little pandas
@hariseldon did you even read my comment? It’s nowt to do with changing the gender or Whitaker it’s the changing of the main creative force.
Go thump your chest elsewhere clarkson.
Can't we just get a game like Skyrim but set in the whoniverse
Would be more interested if I still watched Doctor Who; haven't seen an episode past the 11th Doctor seasons and I feel like I've fallen too far behind to bother trying to catch up.
@lighteningbolt79 I disagree, and respectfully your post comes off as dismissive of an opinion that doesn't seem to match your politics. Folks can criticize change without it being some brand of "phobic", or, can judge media based on the merits, which is easily done in this instance. The writing in DW went drastically downhill about midway through Matt Smith's last season. The Capaldi years had 3 or 4 good episodes, but was mostly mediocre or even cringy. The writing, tone, and production values of the 13th Doctor's seasons are just wrong, and I like Jodie Whittaker. To my older eyes, remembering the 80's onward, this new show just isn't Doctor Who. Moreover, the bad writing and reinventing that permeates the 13th's seasons, especially this new origin story they've cooked up, is a poorly crafted, shoehorned thing. I'm hoping they make another switch and can actually land Idris Alba to play him in a manner that befits the series as a whole.
1.video games based on licenses invariably suck (unless its Batman for some reason)
2.video games based on Doctor Who have an even worse history
3.the beauty of Doctor Who is the revolving door of talents but it's also ok if you dont like one particular team. Just dont be dramatic.
4.anyone who uses the term "woke" as a pejorative description needs to be composted for the Keynoids.
In relation to the games, the reason they're only showing models for "The Edge of Reality" is because it likely looks terrible in motion. Dr Who games have been pretty awful historically & just ride on the license.
As for the show, I love Dr Who and am currently having troubles with it. I disliked Matt Smith as the Doctor but ended up liking his episodes as the writing kept me coming back. Jody is giving me the opposite problem, I think she has potential to be a great Doctor but the writing doesn't back her up. From small interpersonal moments to lore-changing retcons, it feels like someone struggling and throwing everything into the mix. Keep Jodie, change the showrunner.
Is the doctor who even that populair these days. Heard it lost an lot of viewers in recent years
@Stocksy it feels like you didn't read my post. I certainly read yours. You literally said "look at the sexists showing themselves" - as if anyone who objected to the current doctor did so for reasons of sexism only. That you then ignore my points about sex being irrelevant and the fans loving Michelle Gomez as Missy further adds to the feeling that you're not able to read. And why the obsession with chest thumping? Maybe you confused me with someone else? Who knows. All in all though I don't think you've conducted yourself brilliantly.
I read the article and watched the trailers. But I still don't know what kind of games these are.
If only The Timeless Child retcon never happened, I may be interested in these. Instead, I'm now pretending Peter Capaldi didn't regenerate. Not even David Tennant can make me happy for something based in the Chibnall era.
I'll just go listen to some Big Finish audio stories and forget about these.
I wonder how they'll ***** it up this time.
Why is it that Dr Who is the only context in which grown ups still use the word "woke" to moan about things? Grow up please, lads.
Umm....looking at the comments, a lot of people don't like doctor who. To be honest, unless it's dumpster fire bad, I have a hard time judging the value of a movie or show. Point is, I like the 13th doctor, and I really liked the 12th. I didn't even know people hated it until now. Ok, you do you.
So happy to see these coming to Switch. Didn't want to shell out for a VR headset for Edge of Time, so I'm glad I waited. Been a Who fan since the 80s and played most of the video games. As the show is rarely about shooting monsters in the face, it's been hard to make a good Doctor Who game, and arguably the best currently is the Lego Dimensions level pack!
But to me, even games like Destiny of the Doctors or The Eternity Clock had value because they tried to make a Doctor Who game, not a game with Doctor Who things in it (Dalek Attack, Return to Earth). The BBC Adventure Games were excellent back in 2010 (especially as they were free). These look like they'll be a lot of fun. Glad to see Osgood back, always happy for more Jodie Whittaker content and, while I do question the need to plaster the 10th Doctor over EVERYTHING, I'm glad to see David himself back to do the voice.
If we get a full series next year as well, I will be one happy fanboy.
I'm a big fan of Doctor Who, but damn I don't know about these games.
I’ll get whichever one has current Dr. Who.
I normally only play Pokemon, but I LOVE DOCTOR WHO! I'm willing to give these a try. Super excited I'll have more games to play on my Switch.
