Nintendo has posted a 30-second teaser for the upcoming Pokémon Sword and Shield that features a whole load of your favourite 'mon from previous generations. We could describe it in detail, but it's only 30 seconds - check it out above.
Neat, huh? It's great fun to see all the retro pixel versions of Pokémon from multiple generations converging and we especially enjoy seeing all the old handheld hardware getting screen time before morphing into Switches in preparation for the 'new era'.
However, it also poses a question: are all the Pokémon shown in the ad going to appear in Pokémon Sword and Shield? Following the, err, mixed reaction to the news that the game wouldn't include the entire national Pokédex with Pocket Monsters from every single previous generation, one would assume that Nintendo knows better than to tease Pokémon in a trailer that fans won't actually be able to catch in the game.
If that's the case, it's time to get freeze-framing that trailer above! Here are a few snaps to get you started:
Do you reckon we'll be seeing all these 'mons in Sword and Shield? Let us know your thoughts and which monsters you can find in the comments section below.

I’m not a #natdex guy but IMO, this trailer wasn’t smart, this will stir up so much hate in the #natdex community.
EDIT: I will love SWSH, but I can admit this trailer was a stupid move from pokemon’s part.
Beautiful. ^ - ^
From what I'm aware of, the vast majority of the Pokémon seen in this trailer were confirmed anyway, so I think they just played it really smart. Fantastic-looking stuff, anyway.
@darkswabber : Gen VII didn't have a National Dex either. I think it's more the case that people are irate that all past Pokémon may not be accessible, while in Gen VII, all past Pokémon could still be accessed via trade or being transferred from past games.
Unless I have been mistaken and all past Pokémon can in fact be accessed in Sword/Shield, then I don't understand what the hell all the commotion has been about. But I am quite annoyed that Mega Pokémon aren't making a return as I caught a shiny Onix in Let's Go, and I would like to be able to bask in its Mega/Shiny glory in Sword/Shield.
I can't really imagine them showing Pokemon in a trailer for Sword and Shield that aren't in Sword and Shield.
[edit] Also I really want a full version of that remixed song for this video.
Uness they're complete fools, I reckon we'll be seeing all these Pokemon in the end product. Jeez I hope so, for the sake of comments sections all across the net.
If not, then everybody grab a broom, it's shenanigans!!
I know there will be more than enough Pokemon for me. I am getting excited for the release.
The pixel art pokemon in that ad...Yer, that's the sort on innovation in art direction they could have looked into for the game.
I don't think they would dare making false advertisement, especially with such a sensitive topic.
I personally am not the least worried. The Pokémon they exclude will more than likely be the least popular and/or the most useless ones
I'm honestly impressed how accurate the visuals are for the 3DS games, they really did nail the look of the models with their resolution and shaders, including the black outline.
I'm one of the exceptions who is actually more interested in how good the gameplay is so not bothered as there will be hundreds of Pokemon anyway. i agree these Pokemon will be in it otherwise it would be a bit of a false advert!
@darkswabber
This was absolutely beautiful throwback. Nothing stupid about that even if there is a vocal minority.
That ad... was AMAZING!
A majority of the Pokémon shown in this trailer have already been confirmed to be returning.
The Snorlax sprite is asleep!
Honestly, I’m fine with not having all the pokemon. What I’m not fine with is gamefreak claiming that they had to do it to focus on the pokemon animations (yes, those half-baked ugly ones). The audacity... I’m gonna wait and see with this one, very disappointed.
@ConanLives Octopath style 3D Pokemon with 2D sprites?
I like the cut of your jib, my lad.
I’ve been kind of wondering since the whole national dex thing started. The Pokémon Company did a poll where you voted for every Pokémon on who was the best/most popular,If I recall there was like a bunch that only got like one votes and even for that got zero votes how do we know those Pokémon aren’t the ones removed?
As they all turn into fully rendered 'Mon at the end when all the handhelds turn into Switch its a fair assumption that they are all in the game(or can be transferred from other places, although not sure how this bit works).
A trailer implying that all Pokemon will be returning in an entry infamous for cutting the Pokedex feels dishonest at best.
You know, on second look, you know what's missing from this trailer?
Galarian Pokémon. There isn't a single new Pokémon in this trailer at all.
Do we know if you can just download the game from the Eshop as currently i cant pre-order
So glad to see my boy Shuckle in there! ^_^
Instead of #BringBackNatDex it should be #BringBackPixelSprites ;_; idk gen 5 sprites was like the best thing that happened to Pokemon, I've never been a fan of 3D models, especially for franchises that were established in 2D for over 20 years. They don't read the same and frankly even the art style doesn't seem to mix well with 3D when it comes to human characters.
I was thinking about what if swsh had the ability to use pixel sprites (which would look off either way), at this point it would be a gimmick but it's not impossible.
I'm hoping that the 'mon seen in the clip are in SWSH because then Aegislash made it! The one who is a sword/shield! lol
@CaptMarvel33 : The fact that Solrock and Lunatone weren't given Alolan forms (hell, they didn't appear at all in Gen VII) is a cruel, sick injustice.
Selective pokedex presence or not, a Pokemon Sword and Shield ad featuring the species featured in Pokemon Sword and Shield itself... is certainly something I have the nerve to assume.
I gotta admit I teared up a little. Great ad. The National Dex debacle has been a whole thing, not without it’s share of reason at times, but I’m confident we’ll have more than enough Pokémon for everyone.
@CaptMarvel33 this evolution line was confirmed with that Japanese Dynamax website a few months ago. It’s hard to keep track, I know
FYI, 99% shown in this trailer were already confirmed to be in SWSH. There's a few that are new, but we've seen most of them before in previous trailers.
@Silly_G
Solrock and Lunatone could be imported from Gen VI games and were actually needed for a side quest in Sun and Moon
That’s a really great ad. Well done Nintendo. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were all in the Galar dex. Nintendo usually does things with a purpose.
Honestly, I doubt they'd put 'mons in this ad that weren't in the actual game
And with each subsequent ad, I'm less and less excited for SwSh...
"Pokémon Home! ...but they won't all transfer to the newest game."
Then what on Earth was the point and why should people pay money for it? That's my only concern out of all this NatDex stuff.
Furret gang where are you at? We need this good boi
@Diogmites Spoink is basically the reason I'm fine with seeing all the pokemon spoiled before I buy one of the games now. I remember my first play through of Ruby. Catching my boy Spoink and getting excited about the little dude. Then he evolved. To me Grumpig was hideous. Needless to say I released my Grumpig. Spoink still has a soft spot in my heart though.
@KingBowser86 Well I'm planning to use Pokemon home to transfer all my Sword/Shield mons so I can reset my game and grind more
@StarViruZ It is good for carrying some of the 'mons over, but it just seems like bad marketing to do that in tandem with no NatDex. If it were one or the other, I could see GF/TPC's point. But both scenarios without putting forth the effort? Absolutely questionable.
Plot Twist!
All Pokemon in the trailer are in the game, but... any Pokémon not shown in the trailer, aren't in the game.
Now what?
@Silly_G Pokemon not in Sword and Shield cannot be pulled from the Pokemon bank into the game. Only Pokemon in SWSH are available. At least at launch. It's always possible they add more available Pokemon in updates down the road to keep the game future proof.
If you look at Serebii's Galar Dex then you'd know almost all of these Pokemon have already been confirmed
@Supadav03 look on Serebii's Galar Dex, I'm pretty sure they are all listed
@darkswabber,
It is a great trailer that will get the majority of Pokemon fans even more hyped for the game, Game Freak will not have made this trailer for the forum posting minorities, who will not buy this game no matter what they include or omit.
@isellpixels I didn’t go through the whole thing but looking quickly, it looks like you’re right.
@Silly_G Nah, you're on point. The biggest point of controversy is that it's possible that never again will all of a person's favorites be in a single game, not exactly that there isn't a national dex.
If someone, for example, wanted a team of specific mustachio'd pokemon, it's possible that no single game would have Probopass, Whiscash, Kricketune, Drampa, Alolan Golem, AND Alakazam included.
I wish people wouldn't take it so personally and devolve into insulting each other over the whole deal, tho.
It's got chandelure... Sold
Long story short: fantastic trailer, but - as @darkswabber said - fantastically stupid cross between rubbing salt in the wound and outright giving fans the middle finger on Nintendo's (or, more likely, The Pokémon Company's) part.
If they want to play the "everyone is here" angle that made Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that much better, it's fine. But they should also act on it via continous support à la Fortnite/Splatoon/Rocket League/ARMS/etc.. But, then again, it's not like we've seen patches for X and Y to accomodate the new Mega Evolutions seen in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, or patches for Sun and Moon meant to include the new Ultra Beasts and Z-Moves featured in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.
If The Pokémon Company is fine with "just adding later" the, well, later generations of Pokémon in a smartphone game, I see little to no reason (except a dumb business model which can be dismantled as soon as the "but it's Pokémon!" clause the franchise has been hanging on for years is overlooked) not to do so for the actual releases as well.
I've been salty since the NatDex news and I can honestly say I am as salty as ever. In fact no, I'm saltier.
For the record, for people who cared, it isn't the fact that the national dex isn't in the game that has folks like myself in this perpetual state of saltiness, it is the fact that we can't play with certain Pokémon. Don't need them to appear in the Dex, we just want to play with them. I always monotype grass on my Poképlaythroughs, for example, and always with a Chikorita and a Turtwig. Probably won't be able to do that here. And even if I can, I shan't be purchasing it out of solidarity with folks who can't play with their favourites either.
Won't make a blind bit of difference, the PKMN Co. will carry on pulling this sort of thing as the series progresses I'm sure. But PKMN leaves a bad taste in my mouth now. Such a shame, as X and Y completely rejuvenated the series for me and Omega Ruby blew my socks off.
I liked how this trailer showcased some 'Mon from each generation; not only did the environments match each region, but the sprites were a nice blast from the past too!
Oh wow, Malamar is actually in this gen? I was sure my favorite ‘mon was out, though I was getting the games either way, I want to try new ones so it doesn’t bother me.
I'm just glad my boy Pancham is in (been confirmed for a while) him Drednaw and Sobble are half of my team so far (might replace Pancham with a new gen poke though.
@ConanLives i said about the same thing a few times before.
https://www.pokecommunity.com/showpost.php?p=10033695&postcount=75
Sweet! Nuzleaf and Bisharp are in! Unfortunately, Bellossom remains the only Pokemon from my personal top 10 to be confirmed... And with Megas and Alolan forms out, that's gonna keep a good chunk of mine out.
@princezorldo Do you feel they've put a lot of effort into any of those as well? I personally expected way more. But that's my opinion
@princezorldo Well documented? Is there an official list?
@RadioHedgeFund Yep, an open world Pokemon Octopath Traveller is basically the dream, a dream the switch and nintendo could have made happen. Though, thematically might work better with digimon.
Okay call me cynical but wow, was this in bad taste! As someone who's been playing since Blue version back in the 90's, to show off all the old pokemon being played on the old systems, and it MAGICALLY gets upgraded to the new system/game, while they have already confirmed the National Dex is not returning is just a HUGE slap to the face to classic Pokemon fans.
Yep, this is the last nail in the coffin for me. I will absolutely not pay money for Sword or Shield.
@princezorldo Not everyone has time to follow these news so closely, but everyone has right to be properly informed about a product. I can easily see people being misled by this trailer and can only feel disappointed more people don't see the issue here.
Has any trailer adressed in a clear manner the fact that complete pokedex will not be featured in SWSH?
Many Pokémon from that ad are already appearing on Sword and Shield, so it's highly likely. Aside from that, something from the video's title caught my attention:
"A new era for Pokémon begins"
I remember when Black/White were promoted as "a new beginning" (and, with only Gen 5 Pokémon in the main game, I can't argue), XY were called "the next evolution" (3D, don't forget Megas!) and Sun/Moon "everything comes together" (and the game itself felt like a nostalgic trip with old meets new etc.).
And now Sword and Shield are being promoted as a new era, which I hope means it can surprass even Black and White in terms of how many times I want to be surprised with new things and features.
"One would assume...." indeed but assumptions are dangerous and disappointment is depressingly close....
Would guess / hope / expect all advertised pokes to be in the game but wouldn't put money on it...
@princezorldo for someone who's as informed as you clearly are, I'm baffled as to your assertion that these games exhibit no pop-in whatsoever when a simple browse of the YouTube gameplay videos easily proves otherwise. The 'wild area' has to have the most obvious pop-in I've ever seen in gaming, I realise "game footage not final" is a thing but really how much better is it likely to get? I can only assume your clearly false statement is an attempt to persuade others that GameFreak's house is not on fire, when most objective observers are jumping out of the windows as the building burns.
Also lightyears are a measure of distance, not time.
@zet i'd rather they just have each mon use the sprite models from of the original generation their from, pokemon sprites tend to fit strangely well in anything after all and it wouldn't take to much work to toss em though a converter
@princezorldo take a look at the gif in this tweet and tell me the pop-in of people and Pokémon isn't awful:
https://t.co/QyppwyPfLk https://twitter.com/KirutheWolf/status/1187768099803713536?s=17
I have been playing Pokémon since I was a child so when I see the scope of the games going backwards instead of attempting to fulfill the potential of the first home console game in the series, I feel understandably disappointed and let down by GameFreak; it is unfair and cruel to call people (of the same opinion) whiny and entitled crybabies simply because they believe it unfair for a corporation to demand 33% more money for a lesser product, you can claim that we haven't played the games yet so can't fully know the scope but every statement from Masuda/Ohmori seems to be trying to manage expectations down a few levels. Does that mean we expect too much? I don't think so, not when you compare the achievements of other game studios on the Switch and keeping in mind GameFreak's history of poor/inefficient coding.
Lastly, the idiom of which you speak is based on a misconception and those using it are doing so incorrectly. It's generally considered poor form to mix metaphors, this is no different.
@princezorldo thank you for such a well reasoned response, I agree with much of what you say.
I think the reason people in the Dexit camp are so disappointed is because of a perceived standard of which they were expecting the first home console Pokémon games to attain, this is a complex issue but likely comes down to the increased power of the console (which has seemingly been squandered) and the increased cost of the game without a proportional increase in content. Marketing faux pas probably haven't helped - claiming content has been cut due to higher quality animations being present, when all footage released at the time would suggest the animations are identical to those on 3DS - certainly went some way into creating ill feeling within the community.
You also cannot discount the emotional ties we make when young and awkward, finding solace in a game series obviously makes disappointing news (and the following reaction) come with a whole heap of emotional baggage rather than coming from a place of complete objectivity. In fact I would argue no-one on either side of the debate is speaking absolutely objectively.
It may be cynical of me to think this way, but everything I've heard the dev team say seems to be something which could have been fixed by a longer development cycle. For too long Pokémon has cranked out a new entry/spinoff every year, the jump to home console seems to have thrown them for a loop and it shows in the quality of SwSh.
I do realise Pokémon is the biggest multimedia franchise in the world and a delay would have had a domino effect on countless other products, but when you consider the size of the franchise compared to how many people at GameFreak were actually working on the games it just baffles me why they thought they could get away with putting their senior team on a different project!
I do hope to be proven wrong, I hope these games reverse the trend of the most recent entries in the series. But I know I'm not alone in feeling that GameFreak just don't have their hearts fully invested in Pokémon anymore, for all these reasons I won't be buying these games (unless I can find a cheap pre-owned copy) because I don't want a huge money making success to tell GF it's ok to lie to the community and deliver low quality products.
Unfortunately without a demo it's not possible for us to guage the quality of these games without first buying them, which is why I think it's a bit unfair to say we should just give them a chance. But I suppose this is an inherent problem of the games industry and likely won't be solved in the comment section of Nintendolife.
Finally - I do agree with you about descriptive/prescriptive use of grammar however in most cases the switching of meaning doesn't result in a person learning a misconception, for instance the use of 'sick' to mean 'good' doesn't make people think those who are ill are simply living their best life... I suppose context is key, but as you say, this is way off topic 😉
