Never called the Nintendo one but I remember calling Sierra for help in Hero's Quest. Sadly it turned out to be a bug in the game where you couldn't get past a certain maneuver if you were on higher speeds so you had to turn that down in the game settings. I was very annoyed.

And uninstalled 1,990,000 times!

These days I'd prefer a company that was honest and said "We're about making great games. We don't care what color you are, who you worship, what you want to be called, any of that. We're not going to try to force some arbitrary vision of "diversity", because reducing complex, wonderful, individual human beings to a single trait and lumping them all together in groups is dehumanizing."

To play devil's advocate, do we really think game developers, on receiving an application for somebody who says "I worked for Company X on Game Y" goes and plays Game Y and scours the credits looking for that name?

I wonder how much the USPS makes from mailing games? Or UPS? How much does the government make by taxing companies that make/sell/distribute games?

I'd rather have a port at $20. Not sure I'm into this and I loved those games.

@Poodlestargenerica, if it's true that people who work for the company are submitting these bids and NOT ACTUALLY PAYING, that is not a free market thing, that's fraud. if true, they're lying about actually selling games at those prices. I'm a huge free market advocate, we don't you giving it a bad name

As someone who's always seen these Atelier games and wondered about them, but looks at this list and is overwhelmed, where would people recommend I start to try out the series?

I'd say handhelds aren't consoles because I've always used that distinction myself, but I'm not going to get mad at anybody who disagrees.

I did find it interesting that more people think a handheld is a console than think a mini is a console. Could somebody who voted that way please explain your thinking?

"And the responsibility for keeping those games available" Come on, that's silly. Nobody has a "responsibility" to keep games available. Nobody has some ephemeral duty to spend their own money bringing these games on to modern platforms or in remakes or on new hardware that plays classic games.

There is money out there to be made for old games.... IF there is the demand for them. Not every game has enough demand to justify the expense of doing so. The vast majority of them don't. Nobody should be expected to lose money just to bring these games up for the few people who are interested.

And just because a game has a high resale price on the second-hand market doesn't NECESSARILY mean there would be the demand to actually buy it to PLAY. Much of the price is for pure speculation, and the person who would pay $300 for Game X because they suspect it'll be worth $400 in a year is not likely to pay $50 for Game X Remastered.

Great list. Glad to see Sunshine is very low on it (although it shouldn't on the list at all) - that game was awful. Never build an entire game around a gimmick like that. It's as if Nintendo had built a sequel to Mario 3 where you wear the kuribo shoe (a fun diversion) the entire game.

There are many things I think should have been higher when I first look at them, but then I realize that the top list of games is so jam-packed with incredible quality that it doesn't really make much difference.

I enjoyed it, but it wasn't particularly memorable. As in, I can't remember too much about it.

To put it more simply, if this operates more like an emulator, that's perfectly legal.

This may not even be a fair use question, this may not violate copyright at all. What are they ACTUALLY doing? Nothing is clear about this. If they are writing code or creating a device that allows a legally-purchased copy to be played on something else, that's not a copyright violation. It MIGHT (and I say might because it's not clear these licensing provisions are even enforceable) violate the game's license if somebody uses the re3 project to play GTA 3 on Switch, but that's on the user, not on re3.

For everybody talking about other unofficial guides, just because someone else has been breaking the law and other companies don't challenge it doesn't make this legal or right.

#1 - Commercial use instead of reporting, educational, or parody. Very different than fan guides on gamefaqs
#2 - The character designs are Nintendo's IP. Looking at the covers they're extremely close. Also different than fan guides on gamefaqs (text only).
#3 - I don't know this, but if they're using in game-art, including maps, that's protected IP too. Again, you don't see that on fan guides.

One way to think of it is that if every game contains, say, everybody possible gendered/nongendered romance option you can think of, then there is no diversity among the games themselves. Players will have more choices in games but less among games.

When I was a kid (in the US) I remember traveling to the "Big city" (Green Bay) mall and being so excited to shop in Electronics Boutique. Computer games! When I was in college, I worked at an "EB Games". After college, I spent a year as store manager of an EB Games right when Gamestop bought the company.

We were all really unhappy with that. I know we were biased, but we all thought EB was the better store - better prices on used games, especially. I left before the stores started changing names, that was a slow process.

For anybody complaining about charity management earning a high salary, do you feel the same way about doctors? Why wouldn't the same argument apply for doctors working at a non-profit hospital or clinic?

@WhiteUmbrella Question - if the business is barely making anything off the worker anyway, how is it exploiting the worker? Surely if the worker had skills that were actually valuable to an employer, they would have an easy time finding a job somewhere else, no?
