I doubt there's been any major change in their policy towards hardware. They've always tried to make their consoles for as low a price as possible. That's how businesses work. Sometimes that leads to hardware errors like drift, or like the Xbox 360 red ring of death. On other occasions it leads to ridiculous pricing policies like with the Vita memory cards. Every company has had some version of this if they've been around long enough.
I wasn't defending Nintendo at all. I've said many times I think they should fix it and release an updated version (and replacement joystick components so people can update their preexisting joycons). Every hardware developer tries to make their product for as cheap as possible though. Including every previous Nintendo product. That didn't randomly change 5 years ago, so you can't blame the control stick issue on that.
The Wii U had ways of recalibrating both its touch screen and joysticks too. That's usually built in because of normal flaws that can occur. It's not evidence that they somehow knew they were defective components.
They weren't selling a knowingly defective thing. They obviously didn't know about it until it started happening, which takes months of use before it happens.
Ah yes, I'm looking at it now. They use some kind of code injection into the game. That must've taken them quite a while to figure out. Dolphin is one of the most advanced emulators I've seen though. They've done almost everything.
It's worked on both of my joycons. If you give them a thorough cleaning with contact cleaner, it fixes them for a few months. They you have to do it again, obviously.
Given how easy it is to fix by just cleaning under the rubber, or if necessary paying a couple of pounds for a replacement stick, this seems a bit silly.
It's a clever gimmick, but I can't imagine it being fun for very long. Every "track" will be essentially the same. After playing real Mario Kart, it's gonna feel so simplistic. No ramps, no drifting, no ant-gravity, no riding down waterfalls, etc etc.
Mine occasionally fails to register the right joycon. I've tested it with different joycons and it seems to be the main Switch unit that's at fault. But those cost loads to repair so I've just decided to live with it Lol.
CPU speed plays a huge part in emulation. It's entirely possible that the current Switch isn't quite fast enough to run it, but an upgraded version would be.
No reason Nintendo should really care about what the other platforms are doing at this point. They're doing good enough on their own. It's 4 years into the generation. They could easily extend it into being an 8 year long generation if they wanted with a Switch Pro.
I don't think they're all being emulated. They've changed the in-game aspect ratio for Sunshine. That's not possible with emulation. That means they've ported the original game code most likely.
The Wii U was backwards compatible from day 1 because it had the same CPU type as the Wii. Completely different from the Switch. The Switch would either have to emulate or port Wii games. It's definitely possible that a slightly faster CPU is needed for proper emulation.
I'm going with my theory that the Switch Pro will launch in 2021 and being able to play Wii games (via eshop purchase) will be one of its main selling points. That explains the limited time purchase for this AND why they left Galaxy 2 off. They want to be able to use them both as a selling point for the upgraded console next year.
It's even worse than that. The claims about harassment are almost impossible to get evidence for, as most harassment and death threats are completely anonymous. One "side" could've orchestrated all of the death threats against themselves in order to use it to get media exposure and we would have absolutely no way of knowing. We do know that when the FBI investigated it quite extensively, they ended up charging no-one because they couldn't figure out who was responsible. That to me is a good sign you should be slow to believe any particular claims.
I'm well aware of the fact that the media heavily reported one side of it and ignored the other. It doesn't mean that's the reality of what happened. Plenty of people on the other "side" of it received death threats and abuse too, but the media simply refused to report on it. Go and listen to some of the old interviews Total Biscuit did with the BBC for some examples. The abuse he got was pretty obscene.
It's best described as a series of internet political wars that happened quite a few years back in the games industry. Each "side" will tell you it was about completely different things than the other side will. Best to just ignore because it's mostly just a lot of confusion with people talking past one another, as most political arguments on social media tend to be.
Rami Ismail is half game developer, half political activist. If you follow his twitter feed, a lot of it is just screaming about Trump and god knows what else. He doesn't come across as very psychologically well adjusted. He's more of a "everyone who disagrees with me is evil" type person.
I think a lot of it just comes from whether people associate a genre with a particular platform. Nintendo is home to Metroid and the various Castlevania games.
Really depends on the genre for me. If you want to play Mario or Zelda on easy mode, I don't think it makes much difference. Or a story-driven game like The Last of Us.
But something like Dark Souls really does need to be hard. You can't turn something like that into a quick and accessible experience without fundamentally destroying its core appeal. The fact that so many people originally find it hard, but then get to a point where a new understanding clicks, and everything makes sense, that's a crucial part of the experience and it's why so many people loved it.

Just do the contact cleaner approach. It costs like 6$ and has worked just fine for me so far. I've fixed 2 joycons with it.

So how did they change the aspect ratio in Sunshine? A regular emulator couldn't do that normally, as far as I'm aware.

Forza Horizon 4 doing pretty damn well, given how far behind Xbox is in install base AND a lot of people just use gamepass.
