Re: Random: Hyperkin's Latest Switch-Compatible Controller Is... A Hot Dog?

DestructoDisk

@ParadoxFawkes @Nua dpad is more accurate than the sn30 pro. Downside is the plastic on the dpad is hard and a little sharp. Made my thumb sore. I didnt like that it felt clicky, I prefer rubber membrane pads, put thats a personal choice. I also didnt like the hand grips sticking out. Made it harder for me to hold than just a flat back like a real snes controller. Latency felt the same as sn30 pro… which for me was very noticeable in games like Mario, but others may not be as sensitive.

Overall I decided to keep it, its a decent controller and has a lot of connection options, including a physical mode Switch on the back similar to the 8bitdo Pro 2

Re: Three More Sega Classics Are Being Revived, It's Claimed

DestructoDisk

@Porky I am not into translations that try to mold a political agenda and I'm too old to know what modern slang is. However most of the people employed in localization are much older than Gen Z. There is lots of bad localization and there is lots of good localization. Most of the dialog from the original Japanese source is corny as well... and OMG way beyond "flowery word bloat". I am sure most can at least read subs to see how ridiculous the original Japanese is and how over embellished and unrealistic it is. This is one of the main complaints about foreigners who speak "Japanese" and visit Japan... they learned to speak from anime and video games, and the Japanese used in that media is ridiculous. It becomes even more ridiculous when it is spoken out loud in local languages. Speech does not translate at all across languages and cultures. It will never fit in and not sound ridiculous when directly translated. While many localizations are awful, not all of them are... the same can't be said for direct translation dubs, every single one is terrible and robotic and there is no fixing it no matter who does it. Language and culture are intertwined. Change the language and you have automatically changed the meaning and tone. Direct translation is the opposite of preservation. In depth localization allows you to keep the spirit and tone and have everything flow and be natural.

If you speak another language I am sure you already know this. You can directly translate a sentence or paragraph from one language to another and it makes perfect sense, and all the exact words are preserved... but if you were to actually communicate with another person, you wouldn't use that translation in speech or in messaging another person... you would say the dialog in a completely different way, because the translated dialog is unnatural and doesn't fit. Where, how, and what type of joke you would tell in a certain situation would completely change based on culture and language. Speaking in direct translation is incorrect. Any language expert will tell you that. You lose meaning and tone when translating directly. Characters lose personality in media with direct translation.. which is why dubs that use direct translation are so dry and sterile and unrealistic, while that same dialog in Japanese is now. Why would anyone want to watch media where people are speaking incorrectly? I can't understand it, other than preserving the elitism that has been around the western anime scene for decades.

Re: Three More Sega Classics Are Being Revived, It's Claimed

DestructoDisk

@Samalik while “localization” and “translation” are two different words with two different meanings…. A translation is a form of localization.

Translation is just changing one language into another language. Localization is making something available to a local audience. One way to do that is by translating it. So no a localization is not a translation, but… on the other hand… a translation is very much a localization.

A localization can go beyond just translation, but it doesn’t have to. Translating the language for a local region is enough to be considered a localization.

All that said… the anime/gaming elitism is so corny and played out. Most of the media is considered low budget and has poor writing and acting in the original source material. The whole genre was developed because of a lack of funds to develop more complex media. There are plenty of times where heavy localization going beyond basic translation, has resulted in a better product.

“It has to be exactly true to the original source or else all these bad people have ruined everything”, is such a joke, and elitist nonsense. That is why we end up with so many boring translations over here with so much emotionless VA. All the direct translation media sounds exactly the same even the VAs sound the same across different genres of the media. When you directly translate something, despite trying to preserve it’s essence, you actually lose everything. There is no personality . You have to do more than direct translation to give media depth and meaning.

I swear every time I put on a video game or anime with a “faithful” translation and VA, it feels like AI made the media. It is lifeless. The same is not true for the source material, even if it is budget and cheap, it has charm and personality in the native release. Even with original bad Japanese VA it still has life and is fun. Same is true with deep localization, it has heart and life and personality. It feels fun an entertaining. Even the bad VA ones, still bring charm and warmth.

The “faithful” translations just can’t do that. In fact I have never even heard a “faithful” translation with good VA… because you can’t VA locally, naturally, without changing the dialog to feel natural to the local region. “Faithful” translations are bad and will forever be bad. The dialog is bad and forever will be bad. The VA is bad and forever will be bad. Unnatural dialog is the Hallmark of bad writing and unnatural dialog is impossible to salvage in VA. Its not the VAs faults that this media is so bad these days, its the elitism that absolutely ruins this media, trying to cling to purity ruins the message. It ruins enjoyment. It results in robotic nonsense.

@RR529 100%. And why am I reading about politics on a game site? That's what's really gross lol. I think any normal person just sees this game as a Sim City type "what would happen if I was the mayor" type game. And to be fair you can do far worse things in Sim City than this game. Are we going to cancel Sim City 😂

-Edit... I am just realizing this is part of the "Best of 2023" 🤣🤦‍♂️

Re: Fan-Made 'Link's Awakening DX HD' Port Taken Down By Nintendo

DestructoDisk

@Poodlestargenerica You said they literally worked with Nintendo's code. That isn't possible unless they edited the ROM, wrote new assembly, and wrote their own emulator. Assembly isn't code in the same sense as a modern programing language. It isn't transferable in any way. Assembly is literally instructions to the hardware. The EXE that was released is instructions to the OS.

Rewriting the whole game from scratch is infinitely easier. Like I said there is a handful of people that can even read Game Boy assembly in the world today. So even if what you meant by "Literally use Nintendo's code" is reading the code and then writing new code in a modern language, that is still highly unlikely. It would first require the ability to do that.. and even someone who can program or read Game Boy assembly would find it far easier to remake the game from scratch than going through someone else's assembly with no notes.

It's easier to just play the game and test the mechanics and rip sprites. This is the way almost all of these remakes from old 80s and 90s assembly games are done. The man hours to use code from assembly just makes no sense at all. Machine language is crazy difficult to understand and time consuming.

If you knew much about assembly you would understand making a game from scratch that mimics an original machine language game (without actually diving into the code) is not (just as) ridiculous, it is common sense. This is why there are modern tools like NESMaker and GB Studio. Nobody in their right mind wants to work with assembly. Even the original Game Boy devs have long forgotten Game Boy assembly. It's largely useless code knowledge, because it is only compatible with Game Boy, and no other game or computer platform in the world. The code means nothing unless it is in relation to the Game Boys chips.

Re: Fan-Made 'Link's Awakening DX HD' Port Taken Down By Nintendo

DestructoDisk

@Poodlestargenerica It is highly unlikely anyone in 2023 went back and reprogrammed the whole game, which is written in machine language. Not only is assembly tedious and time consuming and there are only a handful of people in the world that know Game Boy assembly, but they would also have to program their own custom emulator just for that one game. It's not known if Game Boy assembly could even pull off the things that are done in this release.

On release it was called a PC port, meaning it wouldn't be Game Boy code, if the author of the release and news sites reporting it used the terminology correctly.

It is vastly easier to just remake the whole game with fresh code.

Re: Reminder: The King Of Fighters XIII: Global Match Is Now Available On Switch

DestructoDisk

@LikelySatan they said ‘wireless’ multiplayer. So Im assuming that means two different screens on the same local network? Super obscure request for a 2D fighter, where it is preferable to be side by side with the other player. Maybe they only have a Switch Lite and the person they intend to play with is in the same situation? Still a lot to ask a dev to spend man hours on something almost no one will use and is only applicable to the Switch version.

No reason for a public display of distress on their part, if that is actually what they meant.

Re: Review: Genki Shadowcast 2 - The Little Capture Card That Could

DestructoDisk

The original was basically a $10 Amazon USB 2.0 HDMI capture stick. Only difference is the chip was on the device end rather than the PC end. I’m guessing the updated version is now the same thing, but a $18 Amazon USB 3 stick. I suppose the jacked up price covers their software (complete with rushed basic spelling errors), so you don’t have to use the universally praised free software OBS. 🤷‍♂️

Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Mortal Kombat 1

DestructoDisk

@Vyacheslav333 35 hour visual novel? That sounds like a horrible experience. I have played through several visual novels and they usually range from 4-10 hours. I haven't played a fighting game visual novel, but I have played some more action or adventure oriented ones like 2064 and Snatcher and I’d say 10 hours is a good cut off. And thats me being an avid reader. There is no way in the world im wasting 35 hours on a games visual novel, when I could read more than 10 real books in that time, by better authors and not packed with filler. At that point I just assume take the cinematic shorter story. Seems like a totally pointless and endlessly dragging waste of time to have 35 hours in a fighting game play through…

Re: Mortal Kombat 1 Shares "First Look" At Jean-Claude Van Damme As Johnny Cage

DestructoDisk

Van Damme passed on the game series. The game series blew up without him. I wish gaming studios would realize, they don't need Hollywood for credibility, they have surpassed Hollywood.

-Edit
Also wanted to add some interesting perspective. The Mortal Kombat movie came out in 1995 and did 122 million at the box office. In 1995 Van Damme did Sudden Death 64 Million and 1996 57 million box office.

Re: Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider Scores A Physical Switch Release, Pre-Orders Live

DestructoDisk

@AJB83 All of the devs other games have gotten a physical release, The company and its games have only gotten more popular over time. Im pretty sure everyone knew a physical release was coming.

This company at least doesn’t hide the fact that they are working on a physical release. I have asked them in the past on their prior releases if they would get physical editions, and they replied to me saying they were working on it, and would announce it when they had a confirmed date.

But with small developers they don’t have as many resources. Their first goal is to get the game finished and out to people. They are working with third parties to publish physical versions and those third parties have to work with Nintendo. Everyone is on different schedules. Small print runs and small studios don’t get the priority treatment with Nintendo either.

So its easy to say, just make everything happen at the same time, but in reality the dev doesn’t have control over everything. So it’s better they just set a release date for digital which they have control over, and when the other cards fall into place, patience is rewarded.

Re: The Pokémon Company Reveals Plans To "Sunset" Pokémon TCG Online

DestructoDisk

@Browny yeah it is pretty crazy. Especially considering Base Set and the other launch sets were already over powered as is, now Pokemon are even more over powered. Kinda sucks. In other TCGs a lot of common cards and weaker characters can be used and played competitively, even sometimes outshining more rare cards. But in Pokémon TCG you really have to have only rare overpowered Pokemon in your deck to play. If it cant 1 hit KO everything, its not worth playing. Making most of the cards in the game useless other than for collectings sake. At least they did tone down the power of trainer cards a bit though.

Re: Popular YouTube Channel 'Did You Know Gaming' Receives Copyright Strike For Heroes Of Hyrule Video

DestructoDisk

@TheCrabMan Sorry but this was a documentary video using small bits of the game under the legal protection of fair use. They have the same standing as your local news broadcaster or film maker.

Only difference in this case is that the material was on Youtube. Nintendo was playing nasty. They know they can get away with this stuff, because Youtube doesnt have time to arbitrate cases like this.

News programs and documentaries about Nintendo have existed for decades, but Nintendo doesn’t bother them, because they legally dont have standing to do so. They are basically attacking people who cant fight back, and attacking their audience. I love Nintendo, but as many others have said above, this is wrong and its self injuring. Completely ignorant and morally corrupt.
