Re: Feature: Games That Got Us Through Tough Times

Phantasy Star Online (V1) on the Dreamcast was the game that gave me my fondest memories.

Not only was it my first MMORPG, but it allowed me to escape during my teen years when I felt like an outcast among my peers.

When I think ‘gaming’ this is the first that comes to mind.

When MS entered the gaming space they were effectively SEGAs replacement. But because they were so new and not established, they were likely to crash and burn like all the other new competitors.

Even until the Xbox One there was that likely possibility floating in the background.

Since MS started buying up all these major studios, that possibility is now out the window. I consider MS as established as Nintendo and Sony now.

They finally cemented themselves as a legacy.

Re: Switch Was UK's Bestselling Console In December With A 'Dominant' Performance

@UglyCasanova Ahh, the inevitable "it's the only console you can buy" comment.

Because if you could buy the PS5 and XBSX, these sales figures wouldn't exist?

Just curious what the logic is behind these sort of comments, because every time this is mentioned, it gives the impression that the Switch is only something people buy because the have to and not because they really want the system.

@Ikana64 I expected this response — the whole “innate vs choice” argument. But it fails on so many levels.

There is no lifestyle people love based on the color of their eyes. People live their lives according to their desires and values. So whether they choose those things or not is irrelevant to their importance in defining themselves and how they see the world.

The fact that I can choose my beliefs doesn’t suddenly make it okay to hate me nor does the fact that someone can’t choose their sexual orientation mean that I have to agree with who they sleep with. My beliefs may be chosen, but they’re still an integral part of my existence —much more so than the color of my eyes.

I agree that we should oppose oppressive beliefs that harm others. But merely disagreeing with the way someone leads their life isn’t oppressive in and of itself. Saying “hey, that’s not something I would do” does nothing to the existence of the person doing it .

@CharlieGirl Homophobia is when you hate homosexuals.

Disagreeing with homosexuality isn’t homophobia. Tolerance isn’t tolerance if everyone agrees with each other. That’s what makes tolerance beautiful — it’s about being respectful and decent regardless of disagreement.

I follow a specific religion. I have specific religious views that I know many other people disagree with. I live my life according to those values. I don’t expect everyone else to agree with me and I don’t think they hate me because they disagree.

You may not see beliefs and sexual orientation as similar, and that’s fine, but my values are essential to my existence and how I see myself. As such, I think the analogy is apt.

In summary, unless Chris Pratt is walking around dehumanizing homosexuals and bashing them, there’s no reason for you to be upset.

Re: Nintendo Switch Is The UK's Most Wanted Black Friday Tech Deal, Apparently

I get everyone wants to be level headed, but 5 years into this console’s life and it’s still dominating the market.

Can we just finally admit that Nintendo has a a legendary system with greater appeal to gamers than their competitors?

I mean, really. We don’t argue about why the Gameboy or the DS/3DS outshined their competitors, but we’re still trying to make excuses for Sony and Microsoft. Yes, they are limited with what they can produce, but this STILL doesn’t explain Nintendo’s overwhelming success and domination.

The idea that people are buying Switch because it’s some “second best” piece of hardware that they’re just “settling for” is absolutely ludicrous.

There has to be a problem with this list. Ultra Sun and Moon were some of the best Pokémon games in recent memory (better than Sw/Sh) and had some of the most pleasing and epic moments in the franchise.

Re: Talking Point: Will Nintendo Abandon The Switch Concept For Its Next Console?

Curator

I would be very disappointed if they abandoned the hybrid concept next gen, unless they can provide something “better”, which I can’t conceive at this moment.

At this point they should just make a Switch pro or sequel that continues riding the wave. We don’t need additional features or gimmicks. Just make a more powerful system with a more functional dock and backward compatibility.

Here’s hoping.

Re: Nintendo Talks About Its Future And Reconfirms Next Gaming System Is Coming In "20XX"

Curator

Don’t know why everyone keeps talking about a new console. Nintendo has already claimed this is only the “middle” of the Switch’s life. The Switch is a hybrid between a home console and handheld. Going by Nintendo’s previous handheld iterations, the DS line lasted 10 years (2004-2014) and the upgrade, the 3DS, lasted for 9 years (2011-2020), giving you a total of 16 years for just one platform.

So I find it hard to believe that the Switch is going to suddenly be replaced in just a few years. Most likely they’ll release a more powerful model, but nothing new for awhile.

Re: Switch OLED Model Scores 2 Out Of 10 On Screen Durability Scratch Test

Curator

I never understood why people need to be told to take care of their expensive electronic devices.

You pay hundreds of dollars to just carelessly throw things around? Why do you even bother owning them?

I get it. Sometimes accidents happen, but when I go shopping for used games and systems (I’m a collector) I just don’t get how some devices can be so badly damaged.

I’m so scared to scratch or damage my devices I do my best to handle everything with care. I add screen protectors, armor casings, and I even dust and clean my systems after a long play through.

Sorry for the rant, but bottom line is this: treat nice things nicely and you won’t have to worry about 2s out of 10.

Re: Talking Point: Do You Have A 'Way' You Play Certain Switch Games?

Curator

Since getting the OLED, I've been playing my new Switch in table top mode with a pro controller and blue tooth headphones. It's been amazing! I will probably play like this more often.

My OG Switch I only play in docked mode, especially for games that require it for performance reasons (e.g. Xenoblade Chronicles 2).

For retro games I usually play on my Lite.
