Re: Oh Dear, Contra: Operation Galuga's Physical Edition Is A Download Code In A Box

CANOEberry

@Summer235 This is how the whole Big Lie technique works (see also the somewhat related modern term, "gaslighting"). From Wikipedia:

Repetition is important, because the Big Lie works through indoctrination. The Big Lie then becomes its own evidence base – if it is repeated enough, people believe it, and the very repetition almost tautologically becomes the support for the Lie. ... People assume there is an evidence base when the lie is big (it's like a blind spot). ... [People also fail to realize] that there are people in our midst that lack empathy, have no care for the common good, are grandiose, arrogant, and willing to exploit and manipulate people for solely their own egocentric needs.

If trolls/bots like Ded_Nexus are so absolutely certain that the future is all-digital, that nothing can stop it and that we all have no choice - why do such "people" have to wade into threads like this constantly to convince us that this "future" will and must be imposed on us? Surely they can just sit back and quietly chuckle as choice is progressively taken away from paying customers, right?

I'm sure there were "people" like Ded_Plexus around for the Xbone launch in 2013 to tell us all that used games were dead, that we'd just have no choice in the matter...

Re: Oh Dear, Contra: Operation Galuga's Physical Edition Is A Download Code In A Box

CANOEberry

@Spookles Having read that dust-up between Sisilly_G and the troll Ded_Nexus (whom I have already Ignored), I did see the comment about video game customers being treated with contempt. Sisilly is not wrong.

I ceased being a gamer from the mid-90s to the Switch launch, with a brief return during the Gamecube run. I think I'm bringing some perspective here when I say that the treatment reserved for gamers in the 21st century is about the worst I've seen for the general paying customer in any industry, with the possible exception of aviation. From Ken Kutaragi telling gamers to work harder for a PS3 to the Xbox One launch to EA's gambling shenanigans, I've been continuously astounded by the attitudes these companies publicly display.

I get it - this is a medium fueled by the 18-25 crowd (maybe more like 13-30 now). That isn't a bad thing, or at least it wasn't; younger people's enthusiasm is infectious and sustaining. But gamers (and industry types) need to ask themselves if they're OK with this hobby becoming disposable in the future, because older furballs like me have become increasingly important too.

If we want this hobby to become sustainable, an art form that grows across generations, then people will have to make a decision: do I want to be limited by my choices, like a console fanboy who thinks that Sonic/Mario/TLOU/Halo is the only game in town, or do I want my choices to broaden my world? The whole point of software (0s and 1s) is that I can choose different paths all the way along...

I’ll probably take a few retro fun laps in F-Zero 99

@Teksetter I HEAR THIS IN MY HEAD WHEN I DRIVE MY WHEELED, NON-ROCKET-PROPELLED VEHICLE ON THE ROADS NOW

IS THAT BAD

I’ll keep my ears open for any Tokyo Game Show news this weekend too.

... [deep breath] that reminds me! Thank you. You asked me a long while back about this past summer's Direct, which inspired me to go back and watch the last few Japanese ones, too (more later).

in another year there probably will be more DLC, and an updated physical release. I’ve been through this with SOR4, Attack on Titan, Dead Cells, and BOTW this far.

At this point, I've passed on so many games for this exact reason that I've missed proper complete releases out of sheer habit (Hades comes to mind). I'm with you on Dead Cells, and I'd really like to pick up the full edition of Mario-Rabbids from a few years ago.... And I don't think there's a reasonable way of judging in advance which edition of a given game will be the last. This is one of the reasons I respect the studios behind Shovel Knight, Hollow Knight and Disco Elysium...

Re: TMNT: Shredder's Revenge Lands A New Physical Edition With DLC Included This November

CANOEberry

with no mention of the DLC being a code or additional download. I should certainly hope not, at least! LRG would not want to associate themselves with an incomplete product in this case.

@Teksetter I've found at least one vendor stating that the physical package will be complete.

In any case, I quite agree with everything you're saying here.

Would it be paranoid of me to wonder aloud if there is future DLC coming which will supersede this version, as well? I've been looking forward to this game, which they've been brewing right in the heart of Montréal these many months... allez-y les gars, you've made some good stuff; be fair with the audience!

Re: F-ZERO 99 Turns The Classic Racer Into A 99-Player Battle Royale, On NSO Today

CANOEberry

@Teksetter WAS SUPPOSED TO BE ON THE LAKE 2 HOURS AGO, BUT MY PARTY-ANIMAL COMPATRIOT SLEPT IN. SHE DESERVES NO FALL COLOURS.

I suck at F-Zero but maybe I’ll bump into you on the track sometime!!

PILOTING F-ZERO MACHINE TO VICTORY A SERIOUS MATTER, A TRUST - BUT I WOULD NOT KNOWINGLY AIM A KO AT YOU

old TMBG song I like

THAT IS SOME PRETTY FUNKY STUFF, I RATHER LIKE THAT

(Must be sung with Boston southie accent)

[Inhales deeply]

That accent is not often heard in these parts (are they just putting it on, though?). The cultural references in there made me wonder, and I found this explanation:

A sissy bar is the support strut for a banana seat (on a bike, minibike or motorcycle), which, despite the derisive and diminutive nomenclature, is actually peice of equipment that was sought after

he's a colorful character. Wicked in every way. But there is both admiration and contempt in the lyrics. Some think he's a dink, some like him. The Critta's prowess is to be respected and you're drawn to it, but he doesn't always play well with others.

Well, OK, that last part has been true sometimes - I can be gentler when I'm not on the track. But I hope to earn "critta" status in the most honest way.

I still haven't been to Boston proper - I haven't even been to New England in ages and ages... my life is pretty full right now, but I miss my more carefree traveling days. On a hike this summer I came across a plaque with an awesome quote from Henry David Thoreau, who I've been meaning to read for ages, so I have some good "Americana" stuff awaiting me when the lakes freeze...

Re: Nintendo Infographic Showcases The Games Featured In June's Direct

CANOEberry

@Teksetter Still here and still following your comments, just kind of overwhelmed right now this year. Never was one for social media/message boards before the pandemic, so this is kind of normal for me, I guess? Still haven't set aside enough uninterrupted time for serious, deeper pleasures like a full run-through of Metroid Fusion... unsurprisingly, since I have yet to spend even one full day on the water. I haven't abandoned gaming, however! Holding firm!

As ever I enjoy your informative comments, so I want to respond to a recent one. This year it does feel like there is a reactionary contingent (mainly but not solely in the USA) that is targeting sexual minorities, and it's making me angry. Like red-furred angry.

I normally have very little patience for the endless provocations and culture wars on the right and left, neither of which seem to live up to their stated principles... but I can tell you I'm paying close attention these days. It is clear that one side is the bad actor right now - and it's the one going on a legislative power trip. I hope those right-wing culture warriors down there are enjoying their moment, because legislative power trips have to be underpinned by broad cultural and political support in order to last - and they haven't got it, far as I can tell. When people like me, who absolutely loathe identity politics, feel motivated to do something because we're so disgusted by this attempt to enact some sort of fake 1950s regime, this stuff isn't going to stand. (It isn't gaining traction anywhere in Canada, though, honestly.)

I know you've been busier this year and I imagine you might be worried about everything that's going on, but I just wanted to say that you're not alone. I expect this weekend that I'll finally get my teeth on that physical copy of Celeste I've been holding out for (it was certainly worth the wait for another Canadian standout, Cuphead), and I will be immediately setting aside some real time to savour it in all its meaning. Hope you're doing well!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (March 25th)

CANOEberry

Hiya @Teksetter! I know I've been errant of late, but I've wanted to send a few dispatches your way for a while... and your message here reminds me that I need to make the time. I hope you're not faring too badly right now and that you're pampering yourself through this! At the least you deserve good wishes and positive energy, not just a bucket... but experience has taught me that people with lots of responsibilities sometimes tend to put themselves last when it comes to care. So don't be alarmed when a mysterious glow of fuzzy positive energy from the north comes down your way!

Between a dreary early winter, a house move and some pandemic-time "deferred maintenance" that has caught up with me, I've had little time to "follow gaming" through sites like this in 2023. I'm still sorting out from the move, and I've yet to rediscover a large number of landscape photos (not to mention a few games!) that I had in storage. I wish I could post/share a few images from recent summer/fall paddles... then again, you must have some stories about your moves across the Pacific!

I'm really glad that you're continuing to share updates and your wealth of gaming knowledge. Looking forward to next exchange!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 24th)

CANOEberry

In honor of Christmas (and the fact I’ve been too busy prepping to play any Nintendo lately!) I’d like to instead discuss What Games Are You Gifting This Weekend?

Happy Christmas, Ms. @Teksetter !! I saw your message about Cuphead a while back (which I will reply to separately), but I'd like to respond to this first.

I wanted to thank you for your good cheer, and for consistently making the comment sections a nicer place. It might seem like a small thing, but I for one notice and appreciate that contribution you make. I should add that your family seems quite open to gaming (I'm jealous), and it's nice to read about all your gifting.

I've actually been meaning to tell you about a game I picked up some time ago which I would like to give gift you (... this verb is awkward in English), but there doesn't seem to be a method for that on Switch and, well, you might have a policy about accepting gifts from strange furballs on the Internet. Also, it's not exactly holiday-themed.... that being said, it's not gory or scary or inappropriate for your kids, or anything.

It's called Hell is Other Demons, a 2D action game practically set on single screens, and it features some of the most satisfying platforming combat I've experienced in some time. The synergy between the simple moves available is quite something, and I think you might like the "HD Atari 2600" look. It's cheaper on Steam right now, but I imagine you might want it on Switch... if you're ever interested, feel free to take me up on my offer!

On a final Yuletide/Solstice/Holiday note: I haven't seen any comments from JasmineDragon in a few months, aside from two short ones a little while after she stopped posting regularly. I hope she's OK and enjoying some good cheer of her own. Hopefully we'll hear from her at some point!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 10th)

CANOEberry

@Teksetter Happy Solstice season! Only 11 days to go!

If I was going to spike my controller over any game these days, it would probably be Slay the Spire. I can consistently get the Watcher pretty far along, but I seemingly just can't get the arithmetic to align against the strongest foes. Nonetheless, I'm glad you recommended it, and that Kate covered it a while back. Truly excellent gameplay.

As I recall, your young ones have been waiting for Cuphead for some time now - I hope they enjoy! Please feel free to reply with first impressions if you like (and tales of your striking coiffure...) 😃

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 10th)

CANOEberry

then try out Cuphead and River City Girls 2 as those delivered this week and I’ve been looking forward to both for ages (especially Cuphead)

@Teksetter The day I've been waiting for! I've been burning to play since I got my teeth on my physical copy... this will be your first time playing too, yes? Looking forward to starting tomorrow! Glamour today, gaming on the morrow!

Re: Talking Point: It's About Time Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night Came To Switch

CANOEberry

Yes, that includes the likes of Hollow Knight, Metroid Dread, and Dead Cells. It's even leagues ahead of Super Metroid

@Olliemar28 Of all the heinous and shocking pronouncements that have emanated from the UK this week, this may be the most... colourful, of them all.

I must point out that traversal is an integral and oft-unappreciated aspect of this genre, and in that respect, Super Metroid is unarguably superior. Even with Dracula's filthy sorcerous chicanery, his ability to simply ignore the laws of physics, and Alucard's powers, Samus' moveset is clearly the more engaging, creative and rewarding. Being a woman of courage and resourcefulness rather than undead royalty, Samus is forced to work with those laws, producing beauty in movement that would have made Newton and Galileo weep. How does SOTN match Samus' tension-filled ascents and descents into the abyss, or indeed Metroid's use of the vertical? Dracula is a spectre of the medieval past, but Samus' adventures take entire worlds for their playgrounds. If she is more élite than Alucard, it's because she earned it, she wasn't just born with it.

@ThomasBW84 Mr. Editor, I will pay to watch a livestream of you setting Mr. Reynolds straight on this matter.

Re: Review: Let's Sing ABBA - La Question C'est Voulez-Vous

CANOEberry

@dartmonkey I don't let the disco mafia here intimidate me. You can stand up to them, be your own man. This community has only just had Bond finally come back into our lives. Do you really have to associate Bond and the N64 with ABBA's tragic moment of weakness?

Questions:

  • Did you test wireless mics while playing this?
  • Can you guarantee that any video reviews of this will exclude certain NL people with a lack of singing talent?
  • What does "blag" mean? I need a British slang guide...

La vraie question, c'est où allons-nous? Pas envers la disco!

Re: Cuphead Is Finally Getting A Physical Release On Switch

CANOEberry

@Teksetter 😃 I've missed your words of late. I must be brief now, but I'm putting together a "summer vacation" post (with photos) to reply more.

  • Busy, distracting summer. Too little paddling, but adventures yes. Haven't made Funspot yet, still trying to pull a trip together.
  • Propose compromise: have secured physical copy of Bayonetta. Perhaps I crack that one open tomorrow and wait with you for Cuphead?
  • Have been quite well overall, thanks! Catch up soon I hope

Re: Cuphead Is Finally Getting A Physical Release On Switch

CANOEberry

TEKSETTER-SAN ARCADE-FRIEND [Bounding toward you enthusiastically]

I can't wait to try it with my kiddos, as they've been quite exasperated with me for holding out this long, insisting I will only play once I can own it physically.

@Teksetter In solidarity with you, and respect for your young ones, I promise I will only crack open my own (physical) copy once you've posted and let us know that you've begun playing yours (maybe in one of those "wutcha playin' this weekend?" threads). I for one can appreciate your decision/determination (although I understand about the "kiddos" - it's been a significant fraction of their lives, hahaha).

I sincerely hope all is well with you!

Re: 'The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom' Launches In May 2023

CANOEberry

The date of my purchase is directly contingent upon the presence of Beedle in this game.

If I am forced to look at the haircut again, I will wait Aonuma-san out on this as long as it takes. Even if the Nintendo Selects version isn't released for years and years. Down with the filthy peddler! This game features much danger due to long drops...

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (August 20th)

CANOEberry

@JasmineDragon I really hope to read more of your comments in the future. I have found your words to be generally interesting, thoughtful, and good-natured, and we could definitely use more people like you here (and in every other online forum I can think of). Thank you for reminding me to keep on paddling! I will try my best to follow your advice about spreading the positivity. Your perspective is always welcome, but in case you cannot participate for a while, I and others will remember your good cheer (... and your love for Bayo and Ryza).

Re: Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! 'Let's Sing ABBA' Brings Band's Biggest Hits To Switch

CANOEberry

Tell me something, @JimNorman... did Kate Gray use the carrot or the stick in order to coerce you into publishing this?

Do you really want your byline associated with the soul-destroying, über-concentrated toxicity of disco? (Don't click that link on a full stomach - you've been warned.) I'm sure you're a good, upstanding gamer, full of righteous fury against Day 1 DLC, lootboxes and crunch policies. Why taint your name with this obscenity?

I live in hope of your redemption.

Re: Into The Breach's Free Advanced Edition Update Lands On Switch Today

CANOEberry

@Teksetter Thank you so much for remembering me, and for the recommendation 😊

I happen to know that you are spot on (again), because this game definitely works for me... having played it for some 100+ hours already! I haven't completed all the objectives as yet (there are some very fun squad builds in there I want to try), so I look forward to picking this one back up when the days are shorter - Ben Prunty's music seems to work better for me in cooler seasons.

I hope you will keep the recommendations coming. Also, I wanted to write you a longer reply in the forums before I disappear completely into paddling season, but I'm not sure you always get my messages (either that, or my forum comments contain some faux pas that are better disregarded 😁). If we don't exchange words sooner, I hope you enjoy this post-COVID summer! You've earned it!

Re: Soapbox: Super Mario Sunshine Wasn't Bad, It Was Just Ahead Of Its Time

monocles popping off their faces, spitting wine everywhere like a faulty hose, and then all the corseted women in the room faint in horror and I'm forced to pay their medical expenses for saying something so horrific

This woman is clearly a menace to Victorian England. I feel complicit and dirtied just reading her articles.

No wonder people feel the overwhelming urge to clean deeply... while cosplaying as a plumber... who is clearly having delusions of competence. And all of that while his true aims (gorging himself further, as if that New York Italian diet wasn't filthy enough for the arteries) are clearly stated at the beginning.

Alas for this world. FLUDD itself could not conduct away all the water of my tears.

Re: Bravery & Greed Looks Like A Fusion Of Retro Action-Adventure Games And Dead Cells

CANOEberry

Unless you clicked it to complain about action-platformers. Or Dead Cells. Or video games in general.

What, can't we click on these articles to complain about the staff writers? I feel ignored.

But let's pretend it's just us fans of action, platformers, and roguelites in here.

Hahahhahahahaa... oh, Kate Gray. I can't you fault you your sentimentality.

Seriously, though, it's nice to see a thread like this - devs and members of the public interacting in this open and friendly way. More, please!

Re: Nintendo Formally Acknowledges Same-Sex Marriage, Despite Japanese Law

CANOEberry

Just let people live and be want they want to be etc.
as long as no one is doing any harm to anyone.
All these statements etc just create an atmosphere and fuel the anti groups and people.

@Dezzy70 @Rambler I agree with Dezzy70, and not just because of that sweet Samus avatar. Virtue-signalling, deliberate provocations and mindless partisanship (i.e. the Kotaku playbook) have seriously degraded public discourse in English-speaking countries (and I say this as a multi-lingual person who follows the news from several countries). I see too many forums where people are desperately and blatantly trying to lay bait, or are clearly spoiling for a fight with people they "disagree" with - only it's not genuine disagreement, but a primal need for tribal warfare they're seeking to fill.

As far as I'm concerned, imbeciles who hate sexual minorities get Reported and Ignored, and sometimes my own personal rebuke - but the online and physical communities I inhabit don't tolerate that sort of mindless hatred in the first place. And yet... what are we supposed to do when it is the Website or forum itself that is fanning the flames, for clicks and such? What if it's a government or the news media engaging in such behaviour?

Therefore by deliberately treating everyone the same, you are, in practice, treating everyone differently

With all due respect - I find it hard to take what you're saying seriously when you trot out a statement like this, Rambler. Even without my grounding in science and formal logic, my own decades of experience on this unhappy planet affirm for me again and again that the cool people come in all shapes, sizes and pelts... when you take people as they are. If I'm supposed to apply some sort of filter or political tilt to my perceptions constantly, I wouldn't be seeing and interacting with people naturally and open-mindedly. And I will caution people to remember that political tilts and "social justice" can change as the wind blows...

Re: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge Sells Over One Million Copies

CANOEberry

@HeadPirate I'm enjoying your disbelief, and I think I would even if this game wasn't made in my backyard. I know Dotemu is not the most well-loved of publishers, but lying publicly about something of this magnitude would be the death knell for their credibility. Also, Limited Run (not my favourite company, but regardless) does have a physical copy coming.

There's an entire world out there beyond GamePass and MS, especially when you consider how many are averse to the platform owner. Strange that I'd have to explain that on Nintendo Life...

Re: Random: Dev Launches Attack On NFTs At An NFT-Sponsored Event

CANOEberry

I expect even individual licenses to eventually go away and it'll all be done via subscription plans. Bleak, but it is what it is.

@BartoxTharglod That kind of catastrophic scenario only happens if we allow it to happen. No one is going to enforce such a thing, any more than people would tolerate the outlawing of print books. Even in the dystopian scenario where the industry colludes to deprecate discs and cartridges, all it takes to defeat is one publisher or platform-holder continuing to sell physical media. Even in the PC market, we have GOG as well as Steam.

Re: Random: Dev Launches Attack On NFTs At An NFT-Sponsored Event

CANOEberry

Physical media is dying and NFTs WILL become a part of gaming

@Kiz3000 You didn't intend this, no doubt, but you just explained for me the aggression and shrill desperation of people who repeat these tired slogans over and over.

I always wondered why some were so eager to push "the death of physical!" as if such an absurd and clearly authoritarian, anti-customer concept was natural or desirable. Sadly, there will always be scammers out there who want others to become more and more dependent for their schemes to work, but the trend of things is going toward more autonomy, more choice, and more access to information, although I get that many people don't see that. We don't have "dumb terminal" computers, we have PCs and smartphones with their own independent hardware. We have open source software. We have a spirit of education, critical thinking and fact-checking that even tyrannical governments are having a hard time keeping in the bottle.

So yeah, buddy, you tell us more about "the death of physical" and other big lies - 'cause maybe, if you repeat it enough, the gullible will believe, right? People don't want to be permanently dependent on some network or authority to do the things they are perfectly capable of doing locally or independently, as the XBox One débâcle shows. Kindle and tablets didn't destroy physical books, auto-translation hasn't destroyed language learning, and NFTs (ROFL) aren't going to destroy anything, except the bank accounts of the unwary. Tell us another one...

Re: Poll: What's The Best Mario Kart Game?

CANOEberry

The only correct answer is F-Zero on the SNES - the bumper car-like physics were more realistic in that game than in any kart "racer" ever created. Just yank Samurai Goroh out of the Stingray and Pico out of the Goose and hand them to Mario and Luigi, respectively. No one will be the wiser.

Re: Switch Listing For Classic Square RPG SaGa Frontier 2 Surfaces Online

CANOEberry

@JasmineDragon Seriously, I'm with you here. I haven't completed much of SaGa Frontier yet, but it was the first game I've played for years and years and years that made me feel like I was back in the '90s (in the best possible way). This is such an underrated series in general, and Frontier 1 strikes me as a darker, more developed take on the work begun in Live A Live.

Any competent ports from this series are guaranteed sales for me!

Re: Talking Point: What's Your Favourite Nintendo Switch Screenshot?

CANOEberry

I play long, text-heavy games (think Disco Elysium, only more so) in multiple languages, in part to learn/improve comprehension of my newest one. I put my 3rd Skyrim playthrough on the back-burner recently, which was a very good thing for my microSD card - I've taken many, more than 7000, let me tell you.

Re: Sea Of Stars Shares In-Depth Look At Chrono Trigger-Inspired Combat

CANOEberry

I'm somewhat confused by the promise of "unshackled traversal" when there seem to be very well-defined linear paths which the characters are indeed using, throughout the field environments.

Two apparent trends to note in passing. This is another title that was first announced by Nintendo (with implied, but not properly stated, exclusivity, timed or otherwise) which has gone multi-platform before release. And this is yet another ambitious indie title delayed to a fairly vague future. I mention this not to complain but to underline the difficulty of development in this day and age. That being said, I too look forward to learning more of this (it looks impressive for a second-ever title from a small studio), and I hope this one will actually see a proper physical release.

Vive le Québec.
