I know it's my own fault for clicking on this after playing hardcore stuff (like Danmaku) earlier today. I admit that.
Still, I can't say I'm happy when I see the "bears" modeled and animated like ambulatory ice cream bars. I mean, I was kind of expecting fur. Are my expectations too AAA?
In my country that is considered an amazing salary. I earn around 11 USD per hour and I consider it a great salary.
@xmkbest I find it extremely ironic that a commentator from Poland would make this comment on a British website.
Has it occurred to you that, once conditions in Poland improve sufficiently that people there are paid better wages, companies will just cut you off at the knees and move to Moldova, Serbia, Singapore, or anywhere else they can hire "cheap labour"? I don't think you know what this is all about, champ.
@LXP8 @YoshiF2 It's true that I haven't played the game you refer to (I'm not typing that title out)... but at no point did I claim that it was bad, either.
By way of clarifying/repeating what I wrote above: I strongly advise you never to recite the game's full title to a person you don't know very well. "Rosy rupeeland" already sounds rather suggestive, but the title's verb and use of the term "tingle" in particular could cause serious misunderstanding... 🤣
Thank you, O fandom, for restoring my faith in the people of this planet. And then folk say that we as fans and customers have no power over corporations?
(I suppose a game about Beedle would have been worse than one about Tingle. Still, I would think the rather inappropriate connotations that come with including the words "tingle", "rosy", "picked" and "land" in a single title doomed that thing from the start...)
All the people cheering on yet another corporate takeover will, of course, forever refrain from complaining later about exclusivity, mandated DLC practices, a loss of beloved second-tier franchises, and a general reduction in customer choice. Right?
In any case, I'm not so worried here. With the current mood in the EU, I doubt that a "foreign" buyout is going to take place. I could be wrong, but we here are not the only ones to notice this dangerous consolidation taking place. Anyone who has played a strategy game knows: you need diversity of units and ideas on the battlefield. Monocultures are always unstable!
@Teksetter Please don't take this the wrong way, because I don't want to scare you or freak you out... so here goes:
You are the gamingparentfriendtour guide that we need but don't deserve
Have you been to Maine, like the Mount Desert Island area? Probably a silly question. It has a similar history to the one you're describing (albeit more famous?), from the sound of it. One of the nicest places I've been.
The portage between the Connecticut and Merrimack river systems looks rather daunting, but... I'm going to start planning this trip immediately. Your dedication to the retro gaming gilded age is deeply appreciated. Thanks so much for mentioning this!
there is absolutely a subset of commenters guilty of this, and when people are so doggedly against something, so angrily defensive of this issue, it’s hard to do anything BUT go heavily on the offensive.
@icomma Thank you for replying, sincerely. I didn't notice that, but I think I'll take the time to reread the thread, including your comments, in that case. I'll try to be open-minded.
@icomma I was interested in what you had to say, and even liked your initial comment. And then... you started spouting a well-defined, pre-masticated ideology, followed by an attempt to apply it in responses throughout the thread.
So, just before you ignore me or dismiss this comment, just consider for a moment: I've heard complaints from serious people about XC2 before (I haven't played it myself), so I was interested initially and open to your argument. But now, at least for this topic, I'm not. There is a reason people dislike puritans and other ideologues, and that same reason is why I stopped reading your messages in-thread. When you take that kind of rigid viewpoint, and start down the path of denouncing, or declaring "Group X is oppressed by Group Y, I must attack all members of Group Y!!!!1!", you lose some of the suppleness needed to actually convince people, assuming that's what you truly intended to do.
@Kermit1 Considering that BOTW's version of Hyrule is supposed to be based on the Kyoto area... your question is quite valid.
Come to think of it... it must be scary to be a geologist or archaeologist in Japan. Ordinary civilians get attacked in broad daylight by 20th-century megafauna, or just walking down the street. I don't want to know what happens when you go deliberately into the buried strata, or underground...
@IceEarthGuard Hahahahaha, please calm down. I know my sarcasm doesn't always come across, but even if you missed the humour, please note that I never called for the game or the article to be removed, or anything like that.
That being said, there are plenty of uptight, hasty people who will totally judge a book by its cover. I still have a friend who totally disapproves of video games, "just because", and some of my guy friends have partners like that. Is it wrong of me to point that out? Anyways... "that's the joke"...
Judge first, details come later, right Twitter generation?
@mereel Would you like to take your own advice, then? We've heard minimal detail from both sides. If it's premature to judge, it's also premature to apply your prejudices, I think.
a process called deformation — this is something that stops clothing textures from seeping into an in-game character model. So, y'know, no awkward lack of cape swishing because it's blending into Mario's thigh or something. And no accidental exposed skin in wintery areas.
To date, naturally furred characters don't seem to have had this problem.
SEGA just confirmed onbTwitter that there are absolutely no plans whatsoever for a physical version of that game.
@GC-161 Please post the link to the tweet in question.
EDIT: Are you referring to this tweet? Because a statement like "No plans for physical at the moment" does not equate to "Sega has decided never to release a physical copy of a Sonic collection"... LOL. Nice try, though.
Between the title of this game and the cover art, I would say that this is the kind of product that can result in the break-up of marriages or an adult gamer's outright arrest...
Are you gonna wait a whole year for a physical box that contains a digital download code?
@GC-161 Not sure about you, but my standard retail copy of Sonic Mania Plus came with the game card.
Let's face it. SEGA is moving away from physical releases.
I just hopped over to my shelf... you know, for confirmation, so that I don't make a hasty, emotional, and unsubstantiated comment... and I see Yakuza, Valkyria Chronicles, and Atlus titles. Oh, and Monkey Ball. Between my Switch and PS4, I have more physical copies of Sega games than Nintendo EPD games.
So yeah... although I acknowledge the sad absence of AGES titles from my shelf... I wish other companies were "moving away from physical releases" like Sega.
After reading several threads on this site about Bayonetta 3, and quite a few before SMT V released, this comment section is truly comical. People complaining about a game being released early... LOL magnificent.
As a fan of Metroid and F-Zero, perhaps I should be annoyed, but I'm actually tickled by this.
@Wexter Thanks for your reply. Possibly I should have been clearer, so here's the thing - I live in the NTSC region as well, and all my gaming hardware was purchased here. I am actually no stranger to visiting the US - before the last few years, I crossed over annually.
OTOH, I have never actually needed to; certainly not to buy gaming stuff. (I think I once bought an SNES game in the USA, but that's about it!) I have no objection to premium pricing if the return is justified. I have copies of titles from Fangamer, Super Rare, iam8bit and, yes, Limited Run (albeit not through mail order). And that doesn't include the stuff I've got from Play Asia. So I will absolutely "pay the freight" to have physical copies... even though I've actually been getting them without paying import costs. Lucky for me, an adult living in reach of multiple large First World cities. But if I feel that way being here, what about our fellow gamers in Europe or Asia, let alone developing countries?
With respect to you and CharlieGirl, I don't think it's fair to take up these capitalist arguments when we're talking about games that were made in Japan. A lot of the blame here should go to the Konamis and Square Enices of the world, but I have to note that Limited Run is provoking a lot of complaint even from American gamers. Anyone in Canada/USA/Mexico who hasn't yet received their copies of the Castlevania Collection or Thimbleweed Park should be asking how I could get them so easily...
Down in the city (we have those here), I can find retailers that will order games for me from Play Asia or even Super Rare games, for just a few dollars down. I suppose I could trouble my friends in the States and "borrow" their addresses, but it doesn't seem right to accommodate one company, somehow.
It is disingenuous in the extreme to suggest that Limited Run should get a pass because just because they are capitalists. Not sure what you're driving at here.
I would have outright purchased this game long ago if Square Enix had bothered to release a Complete Edition. The DLC release timing and price here was particularly egregious, particularly given the better treatment accorded to DQ XI and other "classic"-oriented titles (Triangle Strategy, Metroid Dread, Paper Mario &c.).
I am seriously attached to Dragon Quest, and this has been one of the most bitter disappointments of my time with the Switch so far. Still haven't played past the demo...
It might be illuminating if we saw a detailed spreadsheet tracking the accuracy of these rumours. Beyond a simple accuracy percentage, it might be nice to know which sources are accurate, and at which times of year. Are "leaks" in a fairly dry period like April more accurate than, say, pre-E3 rumours?
my old man ways of saying that no one ACTUALLY plays these games. They just enjoy making a big deal about the lack of them until they're actually on the console, and then they aren't played.
@phartsy I own a working SNES, yet found myself playing Super Mario World, LTTP, F-Zero and other games I still own to completion via NSO. I've never played Metroid Fusion, Minish Cap, Golden Sun, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, the Mario Advance games... or any other from that system.
I would arrange vacation time to play Fusion alone...
@Teksetter 😀 I quite appreciate your invitation to play StS. Feels like the nicer times in the schoolyard, when people would share their excitement about the latest game on the NES/SNES!
I have something of a dilemma here. I have some expensive summer projects lined up, so I've set myself a fairly limited budget for gaming until September or so. I was really hoping to secure a 3DS and some games that look absolutely essential (e.g. SMT/various Atlus titles, Zero Escape, ALBW...) in the next little while. It's not a short list, and that's even before you consider that I've just about given up on finding affordable copies of the many Dragon Quest games I've missed, unlike in the case of those other series.
Sigh OTOH, I suppose I can afford it in an absolute sense. Hey, does this sort of painful decision-making prepare me for a deckbuilding game?...
The contradictions tend to disappear if you acknowledge that some context can exist in our lives and our world (... galaxy).
She can justly be called a bounty hunter because she is a private contractor, not a duty-bound solider of the Galactic Federation. Earning pay from contracts would be very necessary - I am sure that her gunship, and all the equipment associated with her suit, aren't cheap... if she can even find anyone to help her maintain all that Chozo gear to begin with.
A space bounty hunter would be a unique breed - a very independent sort who can reconcile herself to long, lonely voyages in the interstellar deeps, not to mention the possibility of being marooned on uncivilized planets. She would have some engineering and scientific talents as well, by necessity.
As for her "motherly" side... I mean, yes, I played Return of Samus and Super Metroid too. Plenty of women only discover their motherly side when demands arise, no contradiction there. But if you understand who Samus must be, to do what she does, then I don't think you can imagine her being a kind of altruistic crusader. Her actions are noble and generous, but she isn't the kind to be tied down.
@Felix_Sanchez Sir, I was deeply impressed by your novel idea of a Zelda II remake with the sensibilities and fluid motion of Metroid Dread. In fact, I am more than impressed - I am very, very excited about the possibilities. Zelda II had many concepts that could benefit from elaboration and exploration in the present day, and its unflinching challenge is sorely needed these days. I am totally in your corner here!
@Shambo It is very striking to see the praise that this EO series gets (both in person and online), and how near-unanimous it is. Based on what you are saying, I would prefer to start with EO IV, but I am happy to try Untold 1 as well. (I think price will determine which game I try first, sadly.)
I really appreciate your detailed reply. Are you familiar with Darkest Dungeon? The dungeon designs obviously don't compare to EO, but the complexity and challenge are very engaging, I find.
I, uh... I would totally play this game if someone would buy it for me. Kate is earning the big bucks, right? Alex Olney? Mitch Vogel? ... anyone? Is this thing on?
I finally inserted the cartridge of Etrian Odyssey with every intention of soon actually starting it
@Shambo Which Etrian Odyssey game are you referring to? That sort of game looks tailor-made for me... but the series is so expensive as it is, and I need to do mundane things like actually buying a 3DS first...
It's more twisty than a bag of fusilli, and more turny than Lot's wife
Very nice. I would have said, more turny than a neutron star, but then I recalled that people like Ted Cruz exist. (Has he flipped more times than Kain Highwind yet?)
I wish there was a poll option like, "I've never played a 'killing game' but I'm intrigued enough now to try". Given both the article and some of the responses in the comments here, I would say that pretty emphatically.
I'm really not sure what to think about visual novel-type games. One of the first things I realized about gaming, in returning after a long absence, is that plot/narrative doesn't have to meet the standards that apply to standalone fiction in order to enhance the player's experience. The Resident Evil series seems to understand that: a B-movie sensibility serves the action and tension quite well, in part because humour and campiness are integral to the whole affair.
Given that, I look forward to playing my copy of Ace Attorney Chronicles, but I still wonder how a title that relies on narrative serves the player, especially given some of the disapproval I read in prior comments...
I got home the other day and my wallet had left me a Dear John letter.
@GrailUK The gremlin in my coin purse is usually very shifty and quiet, but lately I've noticed him laughing at me in a way I found disturbingly familiar. I think it wants to enjoy my downfall.
I don't know about you, but at times like that, I wish I could roll with Samus and your fellow monkeys (like AiAi, maybe?) in one of those half-pipes. I'd just go back and forth, trying to boost myself into space. It might be futile, but it would be cheaper...
People tend to be happy upgrading their phones each year which cost over £1000
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed This is undeniably true. At the same time, the public should be aware of freaky people like me, with our quaint notions of money and value (not to mention our working vintage hardware like the NES, GameCube etc). Even more frighteningly, we are not a small contingent.
I only buy as many games as I do because I mean to actually play them, as opposed to rolling inside the hype hamster wheel, forever and forever. I have no intention of purchasing an upgrade to the current Switch (with its drifting Joy-Cons and Pro controllers), and I'll be sitting out the next generation, in part out of distaste for Nintendo's recent business practices.
People talk about breaking the cycle of calamity and rebirth in Zelda, or in life. We can at least get out of the "backlog cycle" log enough to appreciate the libraries we have.
I'm covered in fur, not money. Just how much disposable income do people think we have to throw at more hardware? Are we actually supposed to be buying (some of) the many, many games that are being released in this ongoing flood?
I know people want to wish a Switch ProBig Boy Max Pass Swith Plus into existence, but Nintendo themselves have no reason to deviate from their business model, established now for a mere... few decades.
Press A 15 times, and it will forgive you in all of its grace.
@Shambo Are you trying to inculcate us with a sense of penance and shame here? I'm not sure, you understand, that there's room for our two quasi-religious concepts in the same comment section today, given the apparent need to create a soothing atmosphere for Kate...
@KateGray I'm really not sure how I feel about this assigning of sexes to various buttons, but... uh... I think the best thing I and others can do is be supportive of your... perambulations, here.
Apologies if you actually have a favourite direction, but I'm not getting that far into the weeds with this.
At this point, I don't think you're in a position to judge me too harshly if I bring a little culture and Canadiana to this... discourse. I'm sure you're familiar with the medicine wheel and the four directions, but did you know that people can find their personal direction through meditation? Your words might have been more significant than you thought!

Yes, of course, because they are a for-profit company.
Are they providing a net benefit for video game fans? Absolutely!
@CharlieGirl The majority of gamers live outside the US, including nearly all the staff of this site, but Limited Run doesn't seem terribly cognizant of this fact. Re: Backlog Club: Slay The Spire Part One - Be More Tortoise
Re: Random: Nintendo Didn't Know What A Bounty Hunter Was Before Metroid Prime
Besides, Momma has to pay the bills anyway.
Re: Video: What Legend Of Zelda Games Can We Expect To Fill The Gap In 2022?
@Felix_Sanchez Sir, I was deeply impressed by your novel idea of a Zelda II remake with the sensibilities and fluid motion of Metroid Dread. In fact, I am more than impressed - I am very, very excited about the possibilities. Zelda II had many concepts that could benefit from elaboration and exploration in the present day, and its unflinching challenge is sorely needed these days. I am totally in your corner here!
Re: Backlog Club: Slay The Spire Part One - Be More Tortoise
@Teksetter I see from the message before mine that Kate seems to be in happy agreement with you. Must be nice! I wonder what that's like...
Re: Backlog Club: Slay The Spire Part One - Be More Tortoise
@Shambo It is very striking to see the praise that this EO series gets (both in person and online), and how near-unanimous it is. Based on what you are saying, I would prefer to start with EO IV, but I am happy to try Untold 1 as well. (I think price will determine which game I try first, sadly.)
I really appreciate your detailed reply. Are you familiar with Darkest Dungeon? The dungeon designs obviously don't compare to EO, but the complexity and challenge are very engaging, I find.
Re: Backlog Club: Slay The Spire Part One - Be More Tortoise
Re: Memory Pak: My First Killing Game - 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
It's more twisty than a bag of fusilli, and more turny than Lot's wife
Very nice. I would have said, more turny than a neutron star, but then I recalled that people like Ted Cruz exist. (Has he flipped more times than Kain Highwind yet?)
Re: Memory Pak: My First Killing Game - 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors
Re: Feature: Best Eggs In Games
This time the article subject was enough to tell me who wrote this.
@Mr_Fox It is only fair for me to point out another recent pair of headlines from Kate. And now, as we see above, she is referencing that bodily function....
Re: Talking Point: If Breath Of The Wild 2 Launched Alongside New Switch Hardware, Would You Upgrade?
I got home the other day and my wallet had left me a Dear John letter.
@GrailUK The gremlin in my coin purse is usually very shifty and quiet, but lately I've noticed him laughing at me in a way I found disturbingly familiar. I think it wants to enjoy my downfall.
I don't know about you, but at times like that, I wish I could roll with Samus and your fellow monkeys (like AiAi, maybe?) in one of those half-pipes. I'd just go back and forth, trying to boost myself into space. It might be futile, but it would be cheaper...
Re: Talking Point: If Breath Of The Wild 2 Launched Alongside New Switch Hardware, Would You Upgrade?
Re: Talking Point: If Breath Of The Wild 2 Launched Alongside New Switch Hardware, Would You Upgrade?
I'm covered in fur, not money. Just how much disposable income do people think we have to throw at more hardware? Are we actually supposed to be buying (some of) the many, many games that are being released in this ongoing flood?
I know people want to wish a
Switch ProBig Boy Max Pass Swith Plus into existence, but Nintendo themselves have no reason to deviate from their business model, established now for a mere... few decades.Re: Nintendo Acquires Land For New Development Building In Japan
@Erigen Plot twist: the next console will actually resemble that building. Switch Pro? Hah! No, we're getting the Nintendo Waffle Iron!
Re: Back Page: Which Is The Best Controller Button, And What Does Your Pick Say About You?
Press A 15 times, and it will forgive you in all of its grace.
@Shambo Are you trying to inculcate us with a sense of penance and shame here? I'm not sure, you understand, that there's room for our two quasi-religious concepts in the same comment section today, given the apparent need to create a soothing atmosphere for Kate...
Re: Back Page: Which Is The Best Controller Button, And What Does Your Pick Say About You?
@KateGray I'm really not sure how I feel about this assigning of sexes to various buttons, but... uh... I think the best thing I and others can do is be supportive of your... perambulations, here.
Apologies if you actually have a favourite direction, but I'm not getting that far into the weeds with this.
At this point, I don't think you're in a position to judge me too harshly if I bring a little culture and Canadiana to this... discourse. I'm sure you're familiar with the medicine wheel and the four directions, but did you know that people can find their personal direction through meditation? Your words might have been more significant than you thought!
