Re: Best Nintendo Switch Metroidvania Games

CANOEberry

there are so many different kinds of shampoos out there.

@Friendly I don't feel comfortable discussing my fur care in this thread.

Why is there a price difference between shampoos?

I never did understand that, actually. I will say, though, that I find pricing is best thought of as a logarithmic scale (if you're reading this, @Dr_G_Lemaitre, I'm saying Hello!). That is, just like the Richter Scale, the numbers do not increase linearly - a 60 USD game is not worth twice that of a 30 USD game (to the player). By this token, I don't think Dread should be priced at the same point as BOTW (unless it is exceptionally long and varied), but I think an arbitrary limit of 25 or 30 USD is absurd.

Re: Hideki Kamiya Shares Irritation At Speculation Over Bayonetta 3

CANOEberry

@Yosher I am quite sure that Platinum does not hold the copy/rights to Bayonetta. The Bayo 3 trailer only displays a SEGA trademark, although I have read in various places that Nintendo has some ownership rights as well. (I think I find all of this just as unclear as you do.)

I am, however, quite certain that Nintendo's funding was pivotal to the franchise at a critical time. It is Nintendo money that is making all of this happen even now; Platinum is very evidently cash-poor. It was and is Nintendo that calls all the shots here.

If Nintendo had not disbursed the funding, Bayonetta 2 would not have appeared when it did (it may never have appeared!), and I cannot think that Bayonetta 3 would be as far along as it must be now. (I can imagine that a newly acquisitive and IP-hungry Microsoft might have purchased the rights or made a deal with Sega, but that is a fairly recent development.)

Re: Hideki Kamiya Shares Irritation At Speculation Over Bayonetta 3

CANOEberry

@Yosher I'm definitely not accusing you of harassing Kamiya.

I'm pointing out that Kamiya didn't announce this game, and that Platinum didn't announce this game. It was Nintendo's decision to announce it.

Given the context of late 2017 - when the Switch was doing well, but before its success was by any means a sure thing - I can understand the announcement of this game's development. Just as I can understand the announcement of MP4's development. Neither the fans (nor the market) knew what Nintendo and the broader industry had in store for Switch. They needed to entice people.

I agree with most of what you're saying, anyway. My point here is to remind people of the context and puncture this apparent belief that Kamiya (the xenophobe) calls the shots here. He did not and he does not, though his online persona might have some people believe otherwise. The whole narrative of this man's career is that other people make the decisions for him; that's why Platinum is seeking greater heft in the marketplace...

Re: Hideki Kamiya Shares Irritation At Speculation Over Bayonetta 3

CANOEberry

I think its on both him and Nintendo, i imagine that Platinum told Nintendo they are making Bayonetta 3 back in 2017, so Nintendo told them to announce it.

@RoguePirate

Nintendo told Platinum to announce the game?

Platinum told Nintendo they were making the game?

That's impressive. But yes, I am the one foisting "dribble" on the comment section. It can keep your drivel company...

Re: Hideki Kamiya Shares Irritation At Speculation Over Bayonetta 3

CANOEberry

@Matl @FireRabbit @KeyBladeMaster-Dan @Yosher @Kurusu @Deadlyblack @Joeynator3000 @RoguePirate

Can you show me the video, tweet, article, press release in which Bayonetta 3 was first announced? Tell me: in that announcement, do you see, hear or read the words of Kamiya, or any Platinum representative?

I consider Hideki Kamiya to be a total jackass... but "fans" shouldn't sink to his level! I wonder how some people here could possibly ever function in jobs involving large public infrastructure projects, scientific investigations, or education!

Re: Hideki Kamiya Shares Irritation At Speculation Over Bayonetta 3

CANOEberry

@ThomasBW84 This thread may be the worst I ever have read on Nintendo Life!

Please, Mr. Editor, I beg of you: prepare a series of articles explaining the realities of AAA development... no, video game development in general!

I understand that you parse news daily to maintain site traffic, but threads like this drive people away!

Re: Talking Point: Why Metroid Dread Will Be Worth $60

CANOEberry

The problem is the comparative value proposition. You can't tell me this offers the same value as breath of the wild, odyssey, or some of the big AAA titles on other consoles

@NOALink You have a point here when you compare to BOTW! However, the value of that Zelda game, for me, outweighs that of Odyssey and many other titles!

If the length and content of Dread matches (and surpasses) all 2D modern competitors, and hearkens back in its scope to Super Metroid or Prime games rather than the handheld titles, it deserves the nominal pricing of a fully-featured game (but should still be less than BOTW in my opinion!). We shall see!

MAKE ME FEEL LIKE SAMUS

[Deep breath]
Make me feel like I'm walking past the shards of Mother Brain's jar again
... and space-jumping through lifeless nervous caverns in SR-388
... and recoiling when Crocomire emerges again from the lava
... and descending into the impact crater for the first time
... or make me feel what I felt when I finally defeated the Boost Guardian in Hard Mode

I WILL GLADLY PAY REQUESTED UP-FRONT PRICE

Re: Nintendo Reassures Us That Bayonetta 3 "Still Exists" Despite E3 No-Show

CANOEberry

Announced way too soon. Just like Prime 4.

@NoxAeturnus Disagree! Metroid community felt abandoned, fans of that series would almost unanimously prefer to know something is coming, even at cost of waiting! Don't know Bayonetta as well, but remember reading similar sentiment from threads years ago!

Ideally announcements should be left until late in process, yes! But as you see from this thread itself, people get needlessly anxious and impatient and want acknowledgement! I think people are behaving foolishly (Kamiya and some Bayonetta fans deserve each other)! Yet viable game series can get set aside for too long in this business!

Re: Nintendo Asks That You Don't Co-Stream The E3 2021 Nintendo Direct, Thanks Very Much

CANOEberry

watching via "proxy" like that, makes it more difficult for Nintendo to actually gauge how many people watch their stream

@UndoControl Perhaps. But Nintendo is far from alone in having this "problem"; many media organizations have to do some legwork to establish the true size of their market. How do radio broadcasters provide more-or-less accurate audience numbers to potential advertisers? I'm not shedding any tears for Nintendo here.

In addition, the lateness of this request implies, to me, that this notion was an afterthought. I'm not impressed, and I suspect that those people telling us how NCL has all the rights as a creator are betraying a certain contempt for the public here.

EDIT: You are correct, though, in saying that it's not difficult to watch both NCL's stream and the YouTuber's, together...

Re: Minute Of Islands Is Out Now On Switch

CANOEberry

@KateGray Thanks much! Impressions corroborated!

I'm not trying to push you or the other reviewers... I'm just saying that you've reviewed some intriguing indie titles (or you, in part, made them seem intriguing). If I have trouble keeping track of all the stuff released this year, I can't imagine your problems. All this can happen later, though, hehe!

Re: Metroid Prime 4 Was First Announced Four Years Ago Today

CANOEberry

who in their right mind actually believes AAA games take less than 3 years to develop?

@Razer Ah, so I misunderstood you, then! Sorry about that.

Yes, it is really really common around here. I really wish Nintendo Life would do a feature about AAA development, explaining it to people. You are 100% correct to say that it takes serious time.

Re: Minute Of Islands Is Out Now On Switch

CANOEberry

Judging by the art alone, the game does look compelling, but I will reserve judgment. @KateGray, I trust you will be reviewing this?

On that score, I wanted to ask you a question. You've reviewed many many indie games since you joined NL and started rubbing shoulders with us mangy gamers. Will you and the other staff writers be giving us a "year in review" type article, where your most memorable reviewed games will be listed?

Re: Metroid Prime 4 Was First Announced Four Years Ago Today

CANOEberry

People are way too pessimistic. Let's put this into perspective. Metroid Prime 3 took two and a half years to make.

Why would Prime 4 take any longer to produce?

@dudujencarelli From all I've read, Metroid Prime 1 and 2 were produced under truly heinous crunch conditions. Many of the staff responsible for those games left Retro as a result. The industry today is more sensitive to this issue than it was (at least, they are sensitive to accusations), and Nintendo themselves have publicly stated that they do not engage in this practice. That might sound cynical from a Japanese multinational, but this is in the public record. Moreover, Nintendo has said on multiple occasions that (they find) HD development is more difficult than work on games of prior generations.

In addition... and these are purely my own thoughts... the Metroid franchise is at a crossroads. Nintendo is investing some serious time, effort, and even reputation into MP4, particularly. They seem to be aiming for another breakout success, as Fire Emblem has finally achieved. Metroid now seems to really matter to Nintendo - to my mind, for the first time. I personally think that the "flowering" of the Metroidvania genre has stirred something in the management in Kyoto, be it pride or a desire to dominate a market they helped pioneer.

I have been playing these games since the 1980s, and I can tell you that the reputation and publicity around this franchise now would have been unimaginable to me before 2010, let alone around the time of Super Metroid, when it was the finest game no one else in my town had ever played. The development resources being thrown at this game, the sheer demand for new entries, warms my heart, but I worry also. Will Metroid finally become the sales success that it should have been? Nintendo is treating Samus Aran at last as their golden child, and if MP4 is to follow in the footsteps of the last great success - MP1 - it will need a great deal of time to make comparable innovations, let alone match the quality of prior entries.

Could they release something this year? Maybe. Should they? Absolutely not.

Re: Nintendo's Official Website Reveals Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope, Coming To Switch In 2022

CANOEberry

why steal to learn? Would you walk into a book shop, pick up a educational book and walk out of the store without paying? Even if you are making a spiritual successor, no need to use graphics someone else owns

@Trikeboy Your points here are fair. Yes, it would be better to skip the "slavish imitation" or "borrowing" stage directly. For me, this issue is a little more nuanced, though.

If you are making a game and plan to release it to the public, the material should be original. Obviously, some people are simply trying to cash in on the popularity of existing games, and that is disreputable. Nintendo can and will crush such rip-offs legally.

And yet, when I think of a game like AM2R, I have mixed feelings. To my knowledge, no one attempted to cash in on that product. I have not played it, but I have watched a fair bit of a playthrough, and it seems to have been created by people who have deep respect for the Metroid franchise (both lore and gameplay), and Metroid II particularly. All of that unpaid labour - like yours - means something. Legally, we talk of IP and franchises, but to me, culture belongs as much to the fans as to the creators. In the long run, the companies are only a means to an end...

Re: Nintendo's Official Website Reveals Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope, Coming To Switch In 2022

CANOEberry

Trials Rising(Switch) is inferior to what, it's predecesor(Trials Fusion), other consoles?

@WoomyNNYes I very much appreciate the detailed reply; I should have made it clearer that I already own the game on Switch and have played a few tracks (with my vintage GameCube controller, which feels quite natural for this game!). I agree with everything you've mentioned about the quality of the game (so far), and I don't recall any serious frame drops.

In other online communities, I saw many complaints about Trials Rising on all its platforms. I understand that it was rocky at launch and that the reception has improved, however. And yes, Fusion has been brought up often as the superior product.

I bow to your motoring skills 😌

Re: SkateBIRD Shreds Onto Nintendo Switch This August

CANOEberry

I’m sure there has to be a bird somewhere already figuring out the skateboard (on her own)

@iuli I was riding the subway in Toronto once when I saw a pigeon suddenly fly off the roof of a train arriving at a station which had a very large, prominent exit to the outdoors.

I thought, "Now what could motivate a pigeon to roost up there for even a moment?"

On the return trip, I saw multiple pigeons at my departing station flying above the train roof and thought, "No...". Yes - the pigeons have learned to ride the train across an entire borough.

I won't even tell you about the raccoons in that town...

Re: Nintendo's Official Website Reveals Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope, Coming To Switch In 2022

CANOEberry

Well, since the rumour is now essentially confirmed...

I would be interested in a fulsome release of a Donkey Kong game of this type, even if I must tolerate the Rabbids yet again.

The Kremlings need not be the default enemy, but I would be interested in some development of those characters as well. The islands from Tropical Freeze would make excellent settings, and the concept could be stretched from its Mario+Rabbids origins in interesting ways, I think.

Re: Review: Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection - Ryu Hayabusa Deserves Better Than This

CANOEberry

This is why you check out multiple reviewers cuz switchup says it's pretty good aside from a few technical flaws. Easily patch able and they do a patch series addressing updates.

@Ocaz I understand what you're saying, but in my case, as a potential customer of the physical version, a sub-standard build on the game card itself means no buy. I don't want to keep the revision histories of games in my mind when I barely have time to play the games for weeks at a time.

Re: Review: Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection - Ryu Hayabusa Deserves Better Than This

CANOEberry

This is very disappointing. A truly complete collection on the game card would be worth the price of admission. As it is, I may have to look into a PS4 copy. I prefer to support Switch ports, but this sort of corner-cutting decision on Switch releases and collections has happened time and again, and has cost Nintendo revenue - my dollars, at least!

@Slowdive I guess we now know why there was so little word about this until the release week. Good call on your part.
