I'm playing Lunar Remastered Collection (Switch) and Pop'n TwinBee (Super Famicom).
My kids are jumping between Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (N64), Super Mario RPG (SNES), Pokemon Blue (Game Boy), Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure (GBA) and Dragon Ball FighterZ (Switch).
@Mgalens Having both would definitely be awesome if they're really going to do a remake. I thought it was great being able to get both Collection of Mana and the Trials of Mana remake. Not only was the remake pretty faithful to the original, it's also one of the rare cases where I actually prefer the remake. The pixel art in the original is amazing though!
The original is such a timeless classic. I think I'd be most happy with the untouched SNES version put on a real game card (not game key card). I'd pay full price for that, and I have the original cartridge and 3DS version.
I won't. The overabundance of these fake game cards is the reason I'm holding off on getting a Switch 2. There will have to be enough games I want come out on real game cards for me to consider buying the system.
I'm planning on buying more retro and Switch 1 games instead.
I knew as soon as the fake game cards were announced in the first place it was going to be a problem.
Why else would all involved go through the trouble instead of simple codes in a box unless they thought people would consider them as an acceptable replacement for genuine cards?
The amount of third party games using the fake game cards is ridiculous. It was probably very easy for them to go all in once they believed the fakes were acceptable.
I'm playing Lunar: Silver Star Story (Switch) and recently beat Ganbare Goemon 3 (Super Famicom) again. My kids and I are also playing Super C (NES) in co-op without the Konami code. I'm out of practice , but we got to the boss of the vertical factory.
My 8-yr old just went through Super Mario RPG (SNES), and now both kids are into Sonic again. They're playing Sonic Mania (Switch), Sonic Origins (Switch) and then the Sonic games on the Genesis Mini.
This might have been a big feature they got rid of, but the best feature they got rid of is being fully on a game card. It was a game I was interested in on Switch 2, but it instantly became a no-buy with the fake game card nonsense.
It's appalling how many Switch 2 games are going the fake game card route. I'm going to hold off on even buying a Switch 2 at all until there are enough games I want to buy for it on real game cards.
The more I think about it, maybe the big publishers don't think their new games are worth playing enough to be preserved on a real game card?
I still buy games on 30+ year old cartridges, but my kids or I likely won't be able do this with all of the fake game card releases. As a huge Nintendo fan since the NES, it's sadly putting me off from wanting a Switch 2, even after loving the Switch 1.
I finally beat the Super Famicom version of Final Fantasy V and am now playing Ganbare Goemon 3.
My kids both finished Chrono Trigger loved it. Now they've been jumping between Mega Man games (4, 5, 8, X, X3) across various consoles and Donkey Kong Country 2.
@EarthboundBenjy I would be ecstatic if Capcom did that. Not only could you own Breath of Fire II for the long term, but hopefully a collection would come with I-IV. I can't imagine III or IV would ever show up on NSO either.
@Max_the_German I'd pay $8 depending on the game, especially if they came with scans from their original instruction booklets.
I definitely wouldn't want them to diminish the value of their classics either, as I really feel many of them are still the best games in their respective series.
I think it would be cool if they did something like put all of the games from the NES and SNES Classic consoles on game cards, or put each console library from NSO on their own game cards. I'd absolutely pay $100 each. Then the games wouldn't have to compete individually against the entirety of the NSO subscription.
This would be amazing! Having their classic (often best ) games tied to a subscription without the option to purchase them is the sole reason I've never purchased an NSO subscription to play online.
@croz
Yeah, to me, Mario Wonder felt like it was made by people that didn't enjoy or truly understand what made the originals so special, and then they overcompensated with heavy level gimmicks. On top of that, the Flower Kingdom didn't seem like an interesting place, and the overly talkative Prince Florian didn't help things.
I've thought the same thing about translations. It's like a whole new SNES library opened up to me. I've got such a long list of cartridges to get ahold of now. I'm currently going through the SFC version of Final Fantasy V, even though I've beaten the PS1, GBA, and the Pixel Remaster versions . Before that, it was a bunch of stuff I hadn't played before like Dragon Quest V, Ganbare Goemon 2/3, and Sailor Moon: Another Story.
@8bit-Man I loved the Virtual Console and never wanted a subscription
I purchased a lot of games through the VC on both the Wii and Wii U. I have never purchased an NSO subscription specifically because they tie the classic games to it without the option to purchase them. I would have purchased the subscription if either the games weren't tied to it or they were also available for purchase to play completely offline. Instead of getting my money for the classic games and a subscription, they're not seeing any of it because that money is being spent buying original cartridges.
@croz While I'm excited for some remasters (ex. difficult to get games like Lunar Remastered Collection), I've been heavily leaning towards classic gaming too. We continue to play a bunch of Switch games as a family, such as Mario Kart 8, Shredder's Revenge, Sunset Riders, Bomberman, etc., but a lot of the newer releases in many of my favorite series just haven't been doing it for me (Mario Wonder, Tears of the Kingdom, Echoes of Wisdom, Metroid Dread, Brothership, Xenoblade 3, etc.). I'm also not interested in any game subscription service that doesn't have the ability to purchase games.
If you get through your backlog and want more, I've found a great way to play unlocalized Japanese games is the Retron 5. It can play translation patches while using an original, untranslated cartridge. I've been importing Super Famicom cartridges of games that never came here, or their originals didn't, and been having a blast. There's a ton of great games that simply never made it out of Japan.
I just got to Crescent Island on Final Fantasy V (Super Famicom version). I'm going a bit slower on this one since I've been hanging out with my kids while they play RPGs they got into after seeing my play FFIV Hard Type (Super Famicom)
My 8yr old beat Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster last weekend, and now he's onto Chrono Trigger. My 11yr old is working his way through FFIV now.
@Shuntaro72 It's not about the price. I would pay the $15 to play online if Nintendo wasn't pairing the rental service with it, and all NSO had was online play.
The $20-$300 prices are when buying those games used from second hand sellers. Nintendo could offer a way to purchase the same games they already have on NSO for a much more reasonable price than those sellers (ex. around what they charged for them on the Virtual Console) or in collections for a larger price per-collection (ex. NES/SNES Classic).
To me, this looks like Nintendo does not want us to own their classic games and would rather us be subscribed to NSO forever to continue to play them. They could even be testing the waters for extending this to all of their games down the road. I'm not going to support this by rewarding them with my money by paying for NSO. I'll just keep giving that money to people selling the used games instead and buying third-party collections on the Switch when they come. I'm excited about Lunar Remastered Collection!
Many of their classic games are still the best in their series and are some of the best games ever made. I think they should be treated much better than to only be available on a rental service. That the used game prices are so high even though NSO exists shows that others probably feel the same way.
I so wish Nintendo would offer their classic games for sale too. Individually would be great, but I would even pay $100+ for physical collections of each console. As it stands, I've never subscribed to NSO for online play because that money would also contribute to the rental service that doesn't have an option for purchase.
I took down Zeromus on FFIV Hard Type and just started the Super Famicom version of Final Fantasy V this week.
My family and I have been playing Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (Super Famicom), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Arcade version on Cowabunga Collection), and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
I actually think the best way to introduce kids to Mario games is to let them play the originals. My kids started by taking turns with me on Super Mario World (they mostly replayed the first couple of levels at the time ). The originals are a blast and are the reason Mario became a household name. Now my kids (11 and 8) regularly play through all of the originals, including both versions of 2.
As a four-player family, we really didn't enjoy playing Super Mario Wonder together. The way the camera chooses to follow a specific player instead of showing the whole group led to a lot of frustration for everyone. Who the camera chose would change often, and whoever was selected at the end of the level was also the only player who could navigate dialog text. This was not great a thing for a 7yr old to be responsible for, and I "wonder" why lengthy story elements (Prince Florian) needed to be in this type of game in the first place .
Aside from the above, I was so disappointed in the game for many reasons. Even playing single player, it became the first mainline Mario game I don't see myself ever finishing
@X68000 Looks fun! I'm hoping to pick up a Super Famicom version of TwinBee soon.
I'm still playing Final Fantasy IV (Hard Type - Super Famicom) and just got to the save point before the last boss.
My kids and I played rounds of Mario Kart 8: Deluxe, Super Bomberman R, and Mario Party Superstars last night. They're also playing Dragon Ball: Advanced Adventure again.
I'm waiting for the Lunar Remastered Collection physical version to be up for pre-order. Loved Lunar 2 on the PS1!
I don't subscribe to NSO specifically because Nintendo offers their classic games through the subscription only. To me, it would be like rewarding them for that if I paid into it.
I would be much more likely to subscribe to NSO and play games online if they offered the ability to purchase classic games without the subscription.
@Rainz Sunset Riders holds up really well. I've had the SNES version for awhile and still got the arcade version on the eShop the day it came out.
My wife/kids and I regularly play 4 players and it never gets old. My kids now try to get a higher hit percentage on bosses than me so they collect the boss rewards
@obijuankanoobie The SNES version is very good, but the aracde version is probably better. I think there's more things going on at once, and it doesn't have some things censored out. Even with 2 players, I'd probably choose the arcade version.
TMNT: Turtles in Time is one of the cases where I'd choose the SNES version every time unless we needed more than 2 players. The arcade version is fun, but the SNES version plays way better to me.
@obijuankanoobie We play it on the Switch. The arcade version is on the eShop. I actually have the SNES version as well, but the arcade version is my favorite since it allows 4 players.
I'm still playing through Final Fantasy IV (Super Famicom Hard Type version) and am about to get Edge in my party.
I beat Dragon Ball: Advanced Adventure (GBA) this week. It was the first Game Boy Advance game I've played through on my RetroN 5. I generally prefer original hardware (the NES/SNES Classics are great too!), but in this case, it may be my favorite way to play GBA games.
My kids also beat Dragon Ball this week and are playing through Pokemon Blue.
