@setezerocinco I think I'll have to see how many titles actually support it, because Nintendo do imply on their website that not every software will be compatible with it. If it's like the video recording where it's only first party titles and a couple of random third parties and indies signing up, then it's definitely not worth it, but if it's the majority of games, then I'll consider it. Still, I see absolutely no reason why they can't give the option of backing up my saves via a hard drive like the PS4, or even the Wii!
I'm probably going to hold off at the moment considering I have no Switch online games, and NES games don't really appeal to me at all. That said, if they make this the replacement for virtual console, and start adding SNES, N64 and maybe even Gamecube games games to this service as a Netflix of all their virtual titles, I will happily pay for this. At the moment though, even with it's cheap price, I'd rather just spend that £18 on an excellent Indie game.
I don't have much time to play games at the moment with exams coming up, but I might be able to find an hour or two to play more Super Mario Odyssey, which is utterly delightful. I'm up to the Luncheon Kingdom now, and I just love this game the more I play it! The capture system is an incredible mechanism, it's constantly surprising me, and I really never want this game to end!
@Snaplocket That's fair enough! Ahh, I won't be much help here since I never played Persona 4, this was my first game in the series. What about it did you not like?
@Snaplocket I tend to slightly prefer games that are more story driven, and both P5 and Nier had great stories in my eyes, particularly Nier, which has the most gripping narrative of any video game I've ever played. I do understand not liking them though, they certainly appeal to a particular niche, I just happen to fit into that!
It's a shame neither Persona 5 nor Nier: Automata won any awards, since even though BOTW an Odyssey are both spectacular, P5 and Nier are some of the best games I have ever played. That said, I'm really glad to see Hellblade, Edith Finch and Night in the Woods recognised too, and they're all worthy winners
@kyleforrester87 I know, I really wasn't expecting it to be anywhere near as good as it is.
It's also good for me as a slightly lighter game, since I've just finished off both Persona 5 and Breath of the Wild after playing them both for a very long time, so it's nice to play a game that I know I'm not going to have to dedicate hundreds of hours to!
I started playing axiom verge the other day, which is excellent! This is my first foray into the metroidvania genre apart from Metroid Fusion, and I'm having a blast with it!
My only worry is that NintendoLife gave Lost Spear an 8/10 too, and that got reallyyy mediocre reviews elsewhere, so I'm a bit more cautious with their reviews for the time being for games that would be a risk with my wallet. That said, this does look very intriguing
I'm so glad to see this on Nintendo Life again! I don't have a whole lot of time to play anything this weekend, but when I get the chance I'll crack on with more Breath of the Wild, which I love more the more I play! I've just beaten the third divine beast, and am just going around finding shrines before I head to the desert to do the final one.
@Jack_Goetz Well Monster Hunter for quite a while (although not since the beginning as many have already pointed out) used to be quite a big Nintendo staple, and always sold well and sold many Nintendo systems alongside it, so it's only natural to write an article about the fastest selling Monster Hunter game that just came out and it's notable lack of being on a Nintendo console for the first time in a long while - it's a bit of a blow for Nintendo, and definitely one worth exploring
Night in the woods, Hollow Knight and Crypt of the Necrodancer are all must buys, and King of Cards and Inside are must plays, but I've already got Shovel Knight on my 3DS and Inside on my PS4, so I just need to get wait till the former is released and actually find the time to play the latter!
Indies are just getting better and better every year, so I can't wait!
That said, this list has tragic Runner 3 and Super Meat Boy Forever sized gaps
This game is apparently absolutely excellent, and I was going to play it on my PS4, but what with me being a uni now, and my PS4 at home, I've only got a certain amount of time to play the PS4, which I'm dedicating to persona 5 at the moment. The switch is allowing me to play all of my games at university without any monitor or effort whatsoever, and I'm so glad it's giving me that opportunity to play smaller games like this that I otherwise would've missed out on
Hmm, I'd say Nier: Automata and Persona 5 certainly deserve a spot there, especially over ARMS. No disrespect to that game, it's very fun, but those two are some of the most exciting and groundbreaking games I've ever played.
I'd strongly argue that a Professor Layton game and an Ace Attorney game each deserve a place on this list - unless it was physical games only, but Ace Attorney is physical in Japan and is certainly a fully fledged game. They are by far some of the best games I have played not just on 3DS but on any system, and this website has reviewed them all extraordinarily well, so I'm a bit surprised they weren't at least mentioned.
@626b I think they mean just like in the sense of Spirit of Justice, where he's the "main character" in that he's the one in the title so it's much more marketable, but it will focus on the other lawyers, so Apollo was really the protagonist in SoJ, and hopefully Athena will get more development in this game
@Late You absolutely have to continue with Spirit of Justice, the final case is absolutely incredible, and I'd say it was second only to Trials and Tribulations as the best ace attorney game. It fixes everything that was wrong with Dual Destinies and then some
This is great news, the switch is really hitting its stride, and as soon as an Ace Attorney game goes onto it I've got no choice but to buy one! Hopefully it's another main entry in the series, and we get a continuation of the ending of Spirit of Justice
@Nego I think the only reason Gyakuten Kenji 2 wasn't localised was because of poor sales of the first one, and the fact that it was released in 2011, just when the 3DS was being released. If you haven't played the fan translation though, I would highly recommend it, the localisation is as good as all of the other games in the series, and the game is consistently ranked by everyone as one the best ace attorney games, so you owe it to yourself to play it!
I just think this can be easily solved by having a MUCH better eshop layout. If it were organised into different genres, each with a best selling list, or with indie games as a separate category to 3rd party AAA games, gamers could find what they want immediately, and so the too many games thing wouldn't be a problem. Also a demos list. As it stands though, the couple of lists on the eshop don't differentiate between games, and so it just becomes flooded, and many games get pushed to the bottom never to be seen again. It needs to be sorted out quickly for the system's eshop to thrive.
I'm playing Majora's Mask 3D for the first time, having never played the original, and I am truly loving it. The story, the phenomenal dungeons and bosses, it's just brilliant. Whilst Breath of the Wild is a masterpiece, I do hope that they still make Zelda games by the "traditional" sense, with dungeons, bosses, better music and items, etc. I think we can have both styles
@nhSnork Yeah, @Damo this should probably be changed from spin-off to main series game, since this is called Gyakuten Saiben 4 in Japan, and is really quite important for later games, unlike the investigation games which are the spin offs
I'm quite surprised he said the crossover was leaning more to the Phoenix Wright side, since I felt it was more of a professor Layton game with occasional trials, especially how the entire mystery of the game was essentially revealed in one big info dump as opposed to you working it out like in normal ace attorney games
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It may have looked rough, but bare in mind that they said all they're really doing from now until release is just polishing up, so I'm sure it'll look a lot better by the time it comes out
Admittedly it is a small gesture, yet so is this, and both show care for their handicapped customers. Both Sony and Nintendo do show care in this department, and whilst there do tend to be more violent games for Sony's console than Nintendo's, there would also be games that Hibiki could play, like Pappa the Rapper, so it's quite wrong to say that Sony barely care for handicapped customers whatsoever
This is actually a genuinely amazing move on Nintendo's part. To remaster and localise what is arguably the black sheep of the entire Fire Emblem franchise just shows how much faith they have in the series, and how much they'll be supporting it. I can't wait!!!
@thesilverbrick What about the pro controller? Wii virtual console made you use the classic controller for SNES and N64 games, so isn't it possible the pro controller may be required to play GameCube VC?
@SnackBox Well it's only 4 points difference, it's not like fates was rated worse by any significant amount! If I were to say why it was very slightly lower, it's probably just because it didn't have quite the same wow factor that Awakening had, where the series was rejuvenated to allow many more people to join the fanbase. Fates is more of the same, and whilst it improves upon Awakening significantly in lots of aspects, especially Conquest, in areas such as map design, it isn't quite as mindblowing. Still, it's incredibly good, and if you liked Awakening, you're certain to like Fates
Fire Emblem Fates, Tokyo Mirage Sessions and Phoenix Wright Spirit of Justice. To be honest, whilst it wasn't exactly an amazing year in terms of quantity of games, all of the ones up there on that list are great. There was definitely a lot to enjoy this year amidst all the bad stuff!
Every single spot should just be filled with Shovel Knight really. An incredible game just by itself, and the continuous addition of entirely new campaigns make it the best investment I've ever made in a video game. Seriously, if you have ever even had the slightest interest in platformers, you owe it to yourself to play this game
That looks incredible!!! I mean, it's not exactly a shock, considering how good shovel knight and plague knight both are, but I love the fact that they're taking this in a new direction. It's basically an entirely new game! And they're giving it to us for free!!!
@Mathieu_B Ah ok, that doesn't sound too bad, at least the story isn't ENTIRELY terrible I'm going to try and play other fire emblem games after this one, probably fire emblem 7 and path of radiance and radiant dawn, so I'm looking forward to that!
@JaxonH It's a shame that the story is so dull, it had the opportunity to be absolutely fantastic. I'm about 2/3 of the way through Conquest now, and in absolutely loving the gameplay, but whenever there's a cutscenes o just get so bored. And I loved the story in awakening and sacred stones. The first 6 chapters of Fates are brilliant, but then they rush into this decision thing, and there's no reason whatsoever why Corrin would pick Nohr. They're blatantly evil! And then the rest of both games seem to be really just one note. Still, Conquest has done of the best gameplay I've ever played, so at least it isn't slacking in that department!
@Mathieu_B Oh that's a shame, although I have heard similar things from other people. Without spoilers, is there a particular reason why it drags? Does the plot just not have enough substance to carry it across the 28 chapters?
On awakening, that's actually a really interesting way of thinking about it! I think I might replay it again soon, and that's a really good perspective to have. When I first played it, I just thought it as useless filler, but that's a pretty good perspective on it!
@eltomo Oh don't worry, lots of people still like it. Since there are so many Fire Emblem games, some areas of the fanbase can be a bit volatile, and so proclaim Awakening "the worst fire emblem game ever!" just because it's got a couple of plot holes and the map design isn't the best in the series. It's still a phenomenal game, some people just prefer other entries in the series. To be honest, even if it was the worst fire emblem game, it would still be an amazing game, since fire emblem's quality never really falters
@Mathieu_B Ah ok, I completely understand that! I've only played Birthright, and am about 2/3 the way through Conquest at the moment, and the story is a fair bit worse than Awakening's. It just seems a lot less exciting or inspired to me, and the morally grey decisions we were told we were going to get never really come to fruition, mainly because Nohr is just so blatantly evil! So yeah, I do love Awakening in that, even though it's got quite a few holes, and the Valm arc is pretty pointless, the first and third acts are really quite good. I'm hoping revelations might help the story of fates along, but I somewhat doubt it. Speaking of fire emblem, nice avatar btw!
@Oscarzxn I love the FE subreddit, it's actually a great community! They tend to say Awakening is one of the worst, and whilst they also dislike Birthright and Revelations, they absolutely love the Conquest gameplay, saying it's one of the series' best, but strongly dislike its story. They're never elitist though, it's a really nice subreddit
@Mathieu_B In my opinion though, the gameplay in Conquest in just leaps and bounds ahead of that in Awakening. The inredibly unbalanced pair up system is fixed with enemies being able to do it, and there actually being a system of guard and attack stance, rather than Awakening's random blocking or attacking. The map design in conquest is absolutely fantastic as well, with clear thought being put into it, as opposed to Awakening's maps which are mostly just big open spaces. The objectives are also a lot more varied, and the map gimmicks are a lot more interesting and, by and large, aren't too frustrating, but are simply clever. The only area Awakening wins for me is story, but only just, since both plots are pretty dreadful. Besides the story, I just can't see how Awakening is more interesting to play than Conquest. Sorry if this looks like I'm bashing Awakening, I do love it, I just think Conquest is superior to it in most aspects. At least we can agree on the music being amazing though
If Fire Emblem Fates doesn't win, I'll be incredibly disappointed. Even with all the acclaim it got upon release, I still think it's underrated. That's how good I think it is
Why is everyone saying they dislike Xbox here? I mean, isn't it just nice to say happy birthday to a major console player thay has expanded the gaming industry even more? Despite all the competition between different console players, in the end, we all like video games. There's competition in every aspect of video games, between different consoles, genres, franchises, and even the games in the franchises. In the end though, we're all gamers, so there's nothing wrong with saying happy birthday to a console that brought millions of people into the world of gaming that we all know and love
@Angelic_Lapras_King The problem is that preorders have been open for months now, and Nintendo has seen the huge hype for this, yet they fail to meet the demand by a VERY long way. Also, people would be more forgiving if this was Nintendo's first time doing this, but they have recently been abysmal in terms of stocking enough units. You only need to look at the unbelievable scarcity of some amiibos, or the travesty that is the Fire Emblem Fates Collectors edition (which ran out of stock in about half an hour in not just the US, but also the UK, where they released it three months afterwards, even though they saw that their US supply didn't meet demand). There's absolutely no reason this should be happening time and time again, it's a really bad business practice. It kind of looks like they do it on purpose to build up more coverage, which is really upsetting for people who wanted the game/console in the first place but now can't get one.
Whilst all of the developers here are great, I'm mainly interested in Yaught Club Games! If they continue the Shovel Knight franchise in switch, then there is no doubt in my mind that I will buy one!
This trailer has managed to get me excited for a pokemon game for the first time since I was really young....if the game isn't too easy, and the post game is decent, this has the potential to be the best pokemon game ever
Yikes...NX can't come soon enough! There are some decent games here though, with pokemon sun and moon and paper Mario colour splash being the main games I'm excited for. However, picross 3D, rhythm paradise megamix, and stardrew valley all look very interesting as well, so I'll probably pick up them. But apart from that...it's a rather dry list. I would pick Mario maker 3d if it had any worthwhile features, but the lack of 3D, online sharing, and course ID just completely ruins any chance of me getting it
@LemonSlice I just preferred the finale of dual destinies, turnabout for tomorrow, to the DLC case, but I agree it was an excellent case, one of my favourite non finale cases. But yeah, spirit of justice overall is in a whole league above dual destinies, it's probably my favourite ever ace attorney game (contesting with trials and tribulations), so I hope this DLC case keeps up the amazing standard of the game!
@Captain_Toad Brilliant, I reckon you'll enjoy all the other games as well! Make sure you play them in the right order though, too many people make the mistake of skipping to the latest one and strongly regretting it when it reveals spoilers for important events in previous games. Just enjoy them at your own pace in the right order and you can't find a better game series out there
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Oh yes, I completely agree with you there, I strongly dislike most things capcom do with the exception of ace attorney, which is so good to me that it almost redeems everything else they do! But yeah, this is one of the only cases I've seen where DLC isn't extortionate!
@Captain_Toad Yeah, the cases get longer throughout the games, the fifth game (dual destinies) and this game in particular have some very long ones. It took me 8 hours to finish case 3 in spirit of justice, which is the same structure as this case, so 8 hours seems likely! On a side note, how are you enjoying the first ace attorney so far?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Not at all in this case. The full game was a complete full-length experience, and didn't need anything else added to it at all. This just provides a nice bonus to us die hard ace attorney fans. If the DLC case for dual destinies is anything to go by, this will keep the same high quality as all the other cases. For 5 quid, you get a case that will last roughly 8 hours, which is pretty good if you ask me

Re: Feature: 10 Essential 3DS RPGs
Re: Feature: 10 Essential 3DS RPGs
Re: Feature: 10 Essential 3DS RPGs
Re: Nintendo Picks Up Mobile / Handheld Nominations for The Game Awards 2016
If Fire Emblem Fates doesn't win, I'll be incredibly disappointed. Even with all the acclaim it got upon release, I still think it's underrated. That's how good I think it is
Re: Nintendo Of America Wishes Xbox A Happy 15th Birthday
Why is everyone saying they dislike Xbox here? I mean, isn't it just nice to say happy birthday to a major console player thay has expanded the gaming industry even more? Despite all the competition between different console players, in the end, we all like video games. There's competition in every aspect of video games, between different consoles, genres, franchises, and even the games in the franchises. In the end though, we're all gamers, so there's nothing wrong with saying happy birthday to a console that brought millions of people into the world of gaming that we all know and love
Re: Poll: Retro Delights and Stock Shortages - What Are Your Thoughts on the NES Mini Launch?
Re: Feature: Top Nindies On the Nintendo Switch Concept, Its Positives and Key Unanswered Questions
Whilst all of the developers here are great, I'm mainly interested in Yaught Club Games! If they continue the Shovel Knight franchise in switch, then there is no doubt in my mind that I will buy one!
Re: Video: Snazzy Legendaries Trailer for Pokémon Sun and Moon Has Now Been Localised
This trailer has managed to get me excited for a pokemon game for the first time since I was really young....if the game isn't too easy, and the post game is decent, this has the potential to be the best pokemon game ever
Re: Poll: What Are Your Most Anticipated Wii U and 3DS Games For the Rest of 2016?
Yikes...NX can't come soon enough! There are some decent games here though, with pokemon sun and moon and paper Mario colour splash being the main games I'm excited for. However, picross 3D, rhythm paradise megamix, and stardrew valley all look very interesting as well, so I'll probably pick up them. But apart from that...it's a rather dry list. I would pick Mario maker 3d if it had any worthwhile features, but the lack of 3D, online sharing, and course ID just completely ruins any chance of me getting it
Re: 'Turnabout Time Traveler' DLC for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice Out Today
Re: 'Turnabout Time Traveler' DLC for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice Out Today
@Captain_Toad Brilliant, I reckon you'll enjoy all the other games as well! Make sure you play them in the right order though, too many people make the mistake of skipping to the latest one and strongly regretting it when it reveals spoilers for important events in previous games. Just enjoy them at your own pace in the right order and you can't find a better game series out there
Re: 'Turnabout Time Traveler' DLC for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice Out Today
Re: 'Turnabout Time Traveler' DLC for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice Out Today
