Yacht Club Games has gone to impressive lengths to deliver on crowdfunding promises and to keep expanding the brilliant Shovel Knight. As expected it released fresh footage of the next expansion during The Game Awards - Specter of Torment.
What's fascinating is that it'll be a "completely unique standalone experience" that's also described as a prequel, but it will still be a free update just like Plague of Shadows before it. Check out an official description and trailer below.
You'll not only play through Specter Knight's own story, but also see new areas, new music, new enemies, new objects, new boss fights, new weapons, new armors, and way, way more than ever before. Even the villainous boss knights have prepared new tricks and tactics!
While Plague of Shadows followed an alternate parallel campaign, Specter Knight travels a new path in this amazing prequel. It's your mission as Specter Knight to recruit the Order of No Quarter for The Enchantress! Specter Knight's campaign truly is his own adventure, and we can't wait for everyone to get their hands on it this Spring.
Do you like the look of this prequel content for Shovel Knight?

Looks nice. Looks to be pretty fast-paced, which is awesome!
Man, I was so excited when this trailer started, not b/c I want it, I don't, but b/c we were finally going to get to see Wii U written on the screen after a game trailer, after box after box after box for PS4, X1S and even PC, but after the trailer they didn't even list the systems. What a disappointment. Can you imagine if it said Switch?
@rjejr You're disappointed they didn't the consoles the game is already out on and is easily researchable on an update trailer? Okay.
YASSSSSSSS!!!!!!
I am very excited about this and was waiting the entire game awards show to see this trailer. I was not disappointed.
I still have not played shovel knight. downloaded it on the day it was released and I bought a physical copy in the bargain bin at wallmart. Think I will give it a go this weekend. I love the retro look and almost ducktails like gameplay. Maybe next weekend my retrousb avs came in.
Wow, this looks incredible. It makes me wonder what Yacht Club will do when they're finished with Shovel Knight though. A sequel seems unlikely with all this expansion content that effectively gives you a brand new game each time.
Yatch Club people are really generous. Plague of Shadows was already an incredible dlc, even if it had a price, but it was free. Now we get this amazing campaign and there's still King knight's campaign after this. I have been waiting for this for a while and I have to say, they haven't disappointed and somehow, they even surpassed my hype. They are simply amazing.
Couldnt agree more. Thank you Yacht Club!!! Dont give up on the 3ds though.
Released just in time for Hallowe... Oh, wait.
Looks ridiculously good, but it's hardly surprising. Yacht Club just keep on delivering! I would happily even pay for this.
@YouSeemFRAZZLED I think this trailer shows they should actually charge for this DLC, it almost feels like a new game. If it goes to the Switch, I would gladly buy this all over.
That looks incredible!!! I mean, it's not exactly a shock, considering how good shovel knight and plague knight both are, but I love the fact that they're taking this in a new direction. It's basically an entirely new game! And they're giving it to us for free!!!
Just to note: the news page on Yacht Club's website doesn't specify that it's still a free update. I'm not saying it won't be, but I am a bit worried, if only because I don't like spending extra moolah if I don't have to. :T
Fair play to Yacht Games.
Simply Incredible, YC you are an example to the industry i am greatful for your talents and I look so forward to playing in the world of Shovel Knight again .., I can only hope there is a proper sequel in the works as well cause more Shovel Knight is always a good good thing .
I hope they're making enough money to fund future projects with all these free updates! Though I suppose if they needed to they could easily raise a small fortune through Kickstarter with all the good will they've earned. Personally I would have been happy if they gave the DLC to backers for free and charged everyone else as this is going waaaaaaaay beyond the call of duty. While their commitment to fulfilling their stretch goals is admirable, at this point I'd be much more excited to see them develop a new project entirely. I played through the original shovel Knight campaign several times to get all the achievements so by the time Plague of Shadows came around I was a little burned out.
That said, the trailer is great and the new campaign does look really fun.
I have high hopes for Yacht Club Games and their future projects. This looks great. Anyone else would probably just slightly adjust the levels, create a new character with different moves and be done with it, but they really seem to have gone an extra mile with redesigning the bosses and everything.
4 words... Developer of the year
HYPE
I honestly feel more excited about this DLC than I did for the main campaign and the Plague Knight.
Honestly, Yacht, you are doing an amazing job with Shovel Knight. I praise you now
Wow it looks like a new game, unlike Plague of shadows. No wonder it took them so long. I almost feel bad, if we're getting this for free. Although, I've already bought Shovel Knight for 3 platforms.
Hype!
I already bought Shovel Knight three times yet I feel like YCG deserves more of my money. Incredible.
I'm basically getting a sequel to a game I love for free. I don't know how to process this.
This is the way to keep a game selling over time. You keep adding new content so that people who already own it feel like it is the gift that keeps on giving, and those who have not bitten yet will find it harder and harder to ignore.
I hope that their next game will be done in a 16-bit style but retain the same idea of a game with pre-planned updates that come over a two year period.
Now I feel bad for not yet finishing the main game
Is that multiplayer at 1:10?
So, it's essentially a whole new game? And for free (for those who already own the original)? That's awesome!
Awesome! Oh pleeeeaaassse let it still come to the Wii u version!
Beautiful...
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy "the game is already out"
Last I checked this isn't yet out on any console. If you can show me where I can play this "completely unique standalone experience" now then I wont be disappointed.
And if you were watching, then you'll also recall that at the end of almost every video of every game ALREADY OUT NOW showed the boxes at the end, PS4, X1S, or PC. Why show boxes of games that are already out?
So yes, I was disappointed.
If video games could get 11/10 then i reckon this game now with all of this extra DLC's for Free should be one of them TBF.
Wait, so this is a free update? Nice! I thought it would be paid DLC. They truly are generous. I would have paid for it.
@rjejr Sceptor of Torment is an update to Shovel Knight, a game that is out on Wii U, 3DS, Xbox One, PS4, PS Vita, PC, Mac, and Linux.
Here is a link to buy the 3DS version: http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/shovel-knight-digital-version-3ds
I'm not such a fan of this kind of gameplay, but the way they've been treating their fans has made me want to buy as many copies of this game as possible, just to send the message that they're a class act in this world of nickle-and-diming players with DLC.
I likey, I likey! Didn't know my favorite of the boss knights had such a key role in the story and have a lot of original gameplay goin' on. Can't wait.
@Mega_Yarn_Poochy "Sceptor of Torment is an update to Shovel Knight, a game that is out on Wii U, 3DS, Xbox One, PS4, PS Vita, PC, Mac, and Linux."
General question, not an attack, since we seem to be discussing things all morning, do you follow the videogame industry in general, or just Nitneod specifically? B/c if you followed all of the videogame industry you would know being an update to a game doesn't mean it is coming to all versions of that game.
Just recently Destiny update Rise of Iron only came to PS4 and Xbox 1 even though the game Destiny is also on PS3 and Xbox360.
http://www.polygon.com/2016/6/9/11895030/destiny-rise-of-iron-no-ps3-xbox-360
Last year Diablo 3 got a big patch for PC, PS4 and Xbox One, but owners of the game on PS3 and Xbox360 didn't.
http://attackofthefanboy.com/news/blizzard-to-deploy-diablo-3-patch-2-3-for-consoles-at-the-same-time-as-pc/
And it wasn't just a patch, it contained a lot of new things, and it was free like this.
"Diablo 3 patch 2.3.0 is set to add new areas, legendaries, an artifact, and even add new difficulty levels to enhance the experience for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One."
So this SK 'Prequel' will be a standalone adventure, so we can assume it's coming to all previous consoles, but assuming doesn't make it true as those 2 similar examples above show.
Shovel Knight was 10/10 just for the original campaign. With all this DLC, the game is breaking the glass ceiling of how awesome a game can be.
This looks amazing. Can't wait to get it! I love the fact that it's gonna lead into the main game! Wish it were coming sooner, but I still need to finish up Plague Knight's game.
Damn, that's how you support a game. I wouldn't hesitate to pay $20 for eshop games if they were all supported like this.
Blew me away, one of the best trailers I've seen this year. As a long time fan this really is bliss right now.
@YouSeemFRAZZLED free for owners of the Wii U version? How much free content are you wanting from all their efforts? I paid a measly $15 and I've gotten a full game that's easily worth more than$15 plus these 2 full games as free DLC and now you want then to port it to the switch just to give it away for free?
I'm worried this dev team is going to run out of money and won't be able to make Shovel Knight 64 or whatever their next game is planned to be
This looks AWESOME! I'm really excited to jump back into the world of Shovel Knight.
@kickerofelves @leo13 I'm not too worried about their sales or funds. They have an interesting post on their site(the one about over a million sold) where they go into detail on sales. It's from earlier in the year, but as of then, it looks like sales were pretty consistent and doing very well. Plus, they were in the process of bringing it to other territories. They mentioned Japan was to get it this past summer. By keeping their promises for the extra campaigns, they'll more than get their money back with future crowdfunding campaigns, I suspect. They also sell merchandise and take donations. I might just donate, myself(I'm not able to double dip without buying a new machine).
@Henmii I understand why Wii U fans would worry, since other projects have been cancelled. But I think it will be fine. There's no issue of it being powerful enough, as with some other games. But they did say earlier in the year that it was still coming to all platforms. And it turns out that both Nintendo platforms are among its strongest performers sales wise, along with Steam. It makes a lot of sense for them to keep those people happy.
I would love campaigns for all of the knights. I would happily pay for them, too.
@sdelfin although I can see what you're saying, I don't claim to be an expert in the costs of running a dev team so I won't try to claim that you are right or wrong.
However, I'm not hoping they do well enough to be able to break even so that they can do another Kickstarter. I'm hoping that they do well enough to be able to find their next project with the profit from Shovel Knight.
@rjejr I generally follow news of all video games, but not to the degree I follow Nintendo news. I remember reading about the Rise of Iron thing, but that completely slipped my mind.
I guess you make a fair point, though I'm still inclined to believe that Specter of Torment is still coming to the Wii U version at the very least. The other content, I'm not so sure.
@leo13 we are in agreement about wanting to see them be very successful. I won't rehash much of what I said. I'll just say that it sounds like they're doing very well already. They're building a great reputation and I think they're building up a good bit of customer loyalty.
Love Yacht Club, you know you're getting another great game here and free of charge if you have shovel knight, absolute no brainier!
I have to say this look pretty awesome.
