Re: UK Charts: Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined Starts Strong, But It's Not Enough To Reach The Top

BonzoBanana

If PS4 titles get free upgrades to the PS5 version surely many of those PS4 sales are really PS5 sales too. You might also own both consoles and want to have both versions. Also Mario Kart World is surprisingly high as many Switch 2's come bundled with it. Do bundled games count? I mean its a digital code so is it included when the game is registered to the console or when its actually paid for ? If its when the code is registered to the console to allow for third party sellers selling Nintendo game codes then it sort of skews the sales figures.

Re: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Sales Have Got Off To A Slow Start

BonzoBanana

Piracy could be an issue with regard sales. You can run the Switch 1 game on modded Switches and emulators and on emulators you can upgrade the graphics far beyond Switch 2 if you have a fast enough PC. It's a more adult game in Nintendo's portfolio which might be connected to high piracy. Also in my opinion its more of a good rather than great game and has an extremely high price point. When it launched I could see high numbers of copies being sold just a few days afterwards and that is likely because people just completed it and decided to sell rather than play it again or simply didn't like it. As a multi-console and PC gamer I've looked at the game and I just don't want it enough to justify the high purchase price. I'd rather spend that money elsewhere. It's a OK game at a not OK price point. At the current time only Mario Kart World is the game I want a Switch 2 for and even that has had some negative reviews but I still want it.

Re: Switch 2 Sales Reportedly Struggled Over The Christmas Period

BonzoBanana

France and UK are similar populations but I seem to remember the original Switch only sold about 2/3rds as much in 2017 in UK compared to France. I feel it was like 600,000 in the UK and 900,000 in France but could have remembered wrongly, a long time ago. There were stock shortages too so many people missed out having an original Switch as a Christmas present where as if you wanted a Switch 2 stock is everywhere right up to Christmas Eve. I can't really work out how you factor that into the comparison accurately though.

Re: Video: Skyrim Still Isn't 60fps On Switch 2, But Here's How It Fares Against Switch 1

BonzoBanana

They optimised Cyberpunk as much as possible and still it didn't sell that well in most markets. Personally I don't see the point of these old games on Switch 2 but commercially there just isn't the budget to optimise for Switch 2. Let's not forget the Switch 2 only has low CPU performance between that of PS4 and PS4 Pro. A passmark score of around 2000. The steam deck is 9000 for comparison. To get a fully optimised version of Skyrim would be quite an investment of time and resources and of course money. This is just a quick port with little optimisation because that is all that is commercially viable for the platform at this point. Skyrim on the original Switch I would say is a fully optimised version but Skyrim on Switch 2 is not. Lets not forget third party publishers have stated Switch 2 sales were below their worst expectations. I see so little value in these old games coming to Switch 2. You can play this on Steam Deck with 60fps and ultra settings using the latest upscaling software and you don't have to pay a penny extra you can run any of the earlier versions of Skyrim with mods etc. Just feels like a game best played on other platforms. If you don't have the anniversary version or skyrim at all the game is $60. I paid I think £6 for it for steam and made heavy use of mods for graphic enhancements, new levels and new features for no extra money. The value of this is terrible on Switch 2 but only a tiny minority of Switch 2 owners will buy it whether it is good or bad.

Re: Mini Review: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (Switch 1) - An Impressive Version If You've Yet To Upgrade

BonzoBanana

@the_beaver

Switch 2 internal screen supports HDR but can't actually generate a true HDR image, there are also issues with a blue tint to give a falsely high nit rating, poor motion as the screen has poor overdrive to increase battery life. The Switch Lite actually has a brighter screen and of course the OLED is amazing with colours that really pop. In many ways the Switch 2 panel seems a downgrade on the Lite and OLED. It does remind me of the very first Switch model in that battery life was poor and the panel wasn't great so it was better docked than used on the go. The later Switches had improved screens and battery runtime which made them far better portable systems especially the OLED model. I still think the Lite is the best portable Switch as so easy to carry about in your backpack and always ready to have a quick game.

The main problems with the Nintendo Switch 2's display panel are a slow pixel response time causing significant ghosting and motion blur, especially noticeable in fast-scrolling 2D games, making it worse than the original Switch. Other issues include colors tending towards cooler tones, brightness levels falling short for true HDR, and a lack of color temperature adjustment, despite being marketed with a 120Hz refresh rate that few games utilize. These issues stem from using an older, budget-focused LCD panel without necessary features like overdrive to speed up pixel transitions, likely for power efficiency.

Re: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Performance And Resolution Revealed

BonzoBanana

@solarwolf07

I think steam is the place to buy it to be honest but maybe the timing not so good. There is so much software on pc that prices are under far greater pressure so games get discounted pretty quickly but once you have it on steam you have it going forward for whatever pc hardware you have now and into the future, no need to every buy again and the game will keep improving with each hardware upgrade you make. Steam is my primary gaming store really. I have games what seems like 15-20 years old I bought on steam and still available to play on any device I want its absolutely amazing value and no online costs either. However lets face it probably early 2026 this game will be half price or less etc on steam as the occasional offer.

Re: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Performance And Resolution Revealed

BonzoBanana

@kmtrain83 The game is probably rendered at 720p then AI upscaled using DLSS to 1440p and then the Switch 2 will then just conventionally upscale for the 4K output. So the detail level is at 1440p but the output resolution is 4K. Some games on Switch 2 are AI upscaled from a 1080p resolution to 4K output using DLSS so give higher detail levels. Digital Foundry said there are two types of DLSS on Switch 2 one is decent quality and outputs a lower resolution and the other is a cheap version which doesn't post process the most active parts of the screen to save resources. So we don't yet know which DLSS this is using I think.

Re: Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition Brings The Apocalypse To Switch 2 In 2026

BonzoBanana

This would have been nice as a triple bundle of Fallout 3, Fallout 4 and New Vegas on a cartridge so you could play all three games on the go without even changing cartridge. I've seen Fallout 4 on PC for £3.99. This feels like something that will be launched at a very high price and then be amazingly reduced later in a Nintendo sale.

Re: Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition Brings The Apocalypse To Switch 2 In 2026

BonzoBanana

@Vyacheslav333

I can run Skyrim quite well on my Celeron laptop but to get Fallout 4 even working I have to modify ini files and use mods from the internet and still I can only get 20 fps at best. So Fallout 4 definitely needs more performance but I would guess a Switch 1 port is possible if they put the time in with a fully optimised port however this Switch 2 version I sure will be a simple port with not much optimisation as such games don't sell well on switch 1/2 so not worth a huge development budget. The Switch could definitely handle Fallout 3 and New Vegas but that doesn't appear to be happening.

Re: Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition Brings The Apocalypse To Switch 2 In 2026

BonzoBanana

@NeoGee

That's what I thought plus it likely won't play as well as on PC and no doubt it will have a huge price tag. I seem to remember seeing Fallout 4 recently for £3.99 somewhere but didn't fully take it in as already had the game. Outlaws was a much newer game and sold badly on Switch 2 but I guess getting the Fallout 4 engine working on Switch 2 is relatively easy and they won't have to spend much time optimising it so it could be profitable even with low sales.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Patent Supposedly Points To Return Of DS Games

BonzoBanana

I bought a cheap £20 projector from Aliexpress which was a smart projector and claimed Android 11 but was actually Android 8 I think. It had 1GB of memory and 8GB of storage built in and the best system it could emulate at full speed was the DS so you would think even the original Switch could do a very good job of DS emulation. That smart projector had a typical ARM 4 core chip found in cheap sub £10 android boxes but was underclocked in the projector because of the extra heat generated by the projector mechanism. How low performance do you have to go to find a chip that can't emulate the DS. I see there are various web sites that allow you to play DS games online through your browser.

Re: 50 Best NES Games Of All Time

BonzoBanana

My list would be quite different. I would probably only have about 8 of the games here on my best game list for NES. Games I loved were many classic arcade games like Galaxians and Space Invaders plus the 3D combat/trading game 'Elite'. Quite a lot of the games here I didn't like so ultimately I just think different people like different games.

Re: Review: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds (Switch) - Cracking Karting, But Struggles To Keep Up On Switch

BonzoBanana

Looks like exactly what we would expect for a Switch 1 game. If you have a Switch Lite the graphics will look decent for sure for playing on the go. Personally I'll be buying on PC when heavily discounted as I have so many games I've yet to start but I have no problem playing games with weaker graphics and only 30fps. My main issue is not the game itself but the pricing. I enjoy gaming but typically pay sub £10 prices for games pretty much. I bought both Sonic Racing Transformed and Team Sonic Racing both when heavily discounted but I never really got into Team Sonic Racing, it didn't seem a patch on Sonic Racing Transformed.

Re: Switch 2 Bundles Get A Surprise Price Drop At Select French Retailers

BonzoBanana

Europe isn't such an important market to Nintendo and Nintendo consoles typically sell far less i.e. similar figures to US but twice the population in Europe or something like that. I think the PS5 returned to being the best selling console in Europe in August I think so still within the typical launch window of 3 months for a console. Cheapest I've seen in the UK was £299 for Switch 2 but that was just returned/damaged packaging solus Switch 2s at Clearance Bargains. However Japan at launch had a sub £300 price so no surprise Japan buys more and the US is Nintendo's strongest market by far and willing to pay much higher prices. I expect Nintendo will have to price lower in Europe in order to sell more or just sacrifice market share with higher prices. We shall see what they do. Really considering the very high software pricing you would think a £300 UK price would be doable.

Re: Publisher Acclaim Is Hosting Its Own Showcase Today

BonzoBanana

Going by the sales it had I might be the only person that enjoyed Turok Evolution. Absolutely loved that game at the time. I thought was a lot of fun as it didn't take itself too seriously and the music was brilliant. In contrast the later Turok game did a lot better but I couldn't stand it myself. I have unique tastes I guess. I would love to see a Turok Evolution reboot but I'm probably the only one. I played Turok Evolution on PS2, Xbox, Gamecube and PC. I bought the Gamecube version at pretty much full price but got the others at bargain basement prices.

Re: Switch 2 Sales In The US Are Outpacing The Original Console By 75%

BonzoBanana

@outsider83

I must admit I googled weekly sales figures for Switch 2 consoles but not much useful information came back. It was all old news and not relevant to what I searched for. Maybe there are trade sites behind a paywall that have the figures but nothing easy to find. The best I guess is VGChartz estimates but that is what they are and are often wrong and wildly out but then corrected later. In the absence of real information this creates a vacuum for lots of different opinions to fill the void.

You would expect a dramatic slow down though at this point, its pretty much been out for 3 months and it should go fairly low until the build up for Christmas.

Looking on ebay uk there are lots of switch 2 consoles both new and secondhand. Looking at completed auctions prices seem decent but no success for scalpers it seems which is good. There is a 20% off code for some retailers so a chance of getting a s/hand model for about 340 but quidco (cashback site) was offering 5% at ebay a day or so ago so maybe if you timed it right could have had one for about 320 pounds.

Definitely doesn't seem like a console either failing or in huge demand here. Prices aren't tanking but stock is easy to find.

There has been some huge reductions on new Switch 2 releases but these are third party multi-format titles on game key cards almost exclusively.

It doesn't feel like the success of the Switch 1 to me here but that is just my gut instinct I guess and may simply be because Nintendo has provided a lot more stock this time around. It's clear a huge amount of people are selling their Switch 2s after just weeks of using them but then that might be perfectly normal and happened for Switch 1 too and other consoles.

Re: Switch 2 Sales In The US Are Outpacing The Original Console By 75%

BonzoBanana

Here in the UK there seems to be plenty of Switch 2 stock and the UK is one of the better markets for Nintendo in Europe but nowhere is as good for Nintendo as the US not even Japan. When Switch launched there were real stock issues in the UK. People were really struggling to get them and waiting for stock to arrive for many months. In fact I seem to remember even many months later for Christmas it was hard to get a Switch and that was like 8-9 months later. Of course Christmas is a time of very high demand for many products but still Nintendo was struggling for a year to provide enough hardware.

I think its difficult to judge what is really happening over the whole world with Switch 2 sales in comparison with Switch 1 at the same point. As stock seems easily available here in the UK it could be a slow down in sales or could simply be Nintendo are better at supplying stock this time around.

From a consumer perspective we want it to struggle a little bit so Nintendo are forced to be more competitive and bring down prices but we also don't want it to bomb either which would destroy confidence in the format. I guess I'd like to see it do reasonably well but trail behind the sales of Switch 1. It feels like that is what it is doing in the UK at the moment. I suspect US and Japanese sales are much stronger.

Re: Switch 2 Sales In The US Are Outpacing The Original Console By 75%

BonzoBanana

@KociolekDoSyta

I think they are selling existing stock which they have decent amounts of at the original price but after a few months when they have sold existing stock and have to buy new stock prices will increase presumably. Retailers don't always react to price increases if the product in question has low sales volume. I imagine the price will increase as the trade price on their stock goes up.

Re: PSA: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Open Network Test For Switch Announced

BonzoBanana

I was disappointed that Switch never got a version of Sonic Racing Transformed and I'm not going to lie I didn't enjoy Team Sonic Racing. I still regularly play Sonic Racing Transformed on my PC, I absolutely love that game and hoping Crossworlds is more like that. When the wii u came out it was 18 months before we got the amazing Mario Kart 8 and in that 18 months I was playing and enjoying Sonic Racing Transformed and I still can't decide which I prefer of the two games on wii u. This looks to me something much better than Team Racing and maybe even as good as Sonic Racing Transformed.

While the graphics look great, it doesn't look like a game that really pushes visuals to the next level. I feel like the Switch will be able to pull off a good version with perhaps resolution dips due to dynamic scaling when under very high load. I guess it will be 30fps on Switch and perhaps 60fps on Switch 2 though which is a big difference in gameplay feel.

Re: 18 Months And $200,000 Later, Modder Gives Switch Lite OLED And HDMI-Out - And A Switch 2 OLED Mod Is Next

BonzoBanana

@Xansies

I have to agree with you, I love my Switch Lite, it feels better in the hand than a normal Switch even if the screen is a bit too small for a few games. Overall as a portable device I think it is superior to the original Switch models. I have big hands too and was a huge fan of the original Xbox duke controller but to me my fingers are better placed with the Switch Lite.

Re: 18 Months And $200,000 Later, Modder Gives Switch Lite OLED And HDMI-Out - And A Switch 2 OLED Mod Is Next

BonzoBanana

@Porco Sometimes battery life is less on a smaller form factor as a smaller battery is often necessary for that smaller form factor. However the lite makes use of the mariko chipset so is much more energy efficient like the OLED model and the later normal Switch. However it still has reduced battery runtime compared to them but still much better than the original Switch when launched and the Switch 2. It feels like I'm getting about 4 hours out of mine before recharging but not done any tests. I feel like my standard Switch which is a later model with the mariko chipset gets maybe 5.5hours tops. Of course it depends on what games I'm playing and the normal Switch is mainly used in the dock. Unless Nintendo do an improved fabrication process for the Switch 2 lite then its battery runtime could be even less than the standard Switch 2. This is why I think the lite model will come later than many are expecting and have improved fabrication perhaps the same time as a OLED Switch 2.

Re: 18 Months And $200,000 Later, Modder Gives Switch Lite OLED And HDMI-Out - And A Switch 2 OLED Mod Is Next

BonzoBanana

@sethfranum

The chips to output an hdmi signal are only a few pence. You get android boxes with the same chip and those boxes can be less than 10 dollars complete at retail for the less powerful android boxes. I guess if a lite is restricted to portable display modes only it would have looked a bit rough on a TV but still a good feature to have for occasional gaming.

Personally I don't see the point of this upgrade. I have a Switch Lite and the screen is super impressive and actually brighter than the Switch 2 screen. I've been amazed with the clarity of the display on mine. However maybe there are different panels on different batches of lite model, not sure but I have zero complaints about my switch lite display except of course its small and for some games like Skyrim it can be difficult to see everything from the viewing distance that feels comfortable to me when holding the console. OLED wouldn't improve that. The Switch lite is brilliantly portable. I love it.

Re: Video: Switch 2's GameCube Emulation Apparently Has Underlying Issues Nintendo "Desperately Needs To Fix"

BonzoBanana

It's nice to have gamecube emulation but I don't think its the full fat experience of playing it on original hardware like the gamecube and wii on a CRT or maybe a wii u on a plasma TV as many plasma TVs had very low input lag due to the extremely responsive display. Zelda Windwaker was amazing in HD on wii u but did introduce a little lag compared to the original version is I remember rightly. This was probably just hdmi issues.

The Switch 2 panel seems poor and feels like a hindrance to running classic games that require low input lag to get the best experience.

Re: Switch 2 Has Already Overtaken The Combined Lifetime Sales Of The Entire Xbox Series Family And PS5 Pro In Japan

BonzoBanana

Switch 2 is less than 300 pounds in Japan and Mario Kart World physical is about 50 pounds. It's on a completely different price level to many other markets. I've heard in many parts of Europe the price is really excessively high and sales have been very poor. Countries like Poland and other ex-eastern block countries and countries in Scandinavia. In fact I've heard many have bought their Switch 2's from France because of more reasonable pricing there but still the French pricing is far higher than Japan. Japan is off to a great start but they are only one country and they represented about 30% of the launch sales figures on their own. You can't just extrapolate world sales from one market. Also I'm not surprised it's overtaken Xbox in Japan its always a failure in Japan and I also don't see the point of the PS5 Pro which is so expensive yet achieves just slightly higher resolutions mostly. It seems so expensive for so little improvement.

We will get a full picture of Switch 2 consoles sales over the next few weeks across many markets I would of thought. There will be successes and failures depending on market.

Re: Nintendo Reportedly Banning Switch 2's Using MIG Cartridges

BonzoBanana

@Dhaladog

I personally think they should close down the account itself rather than brick the hardware. The Switch 2 should be resettable and usable by another Nintendo account perhaps with the restriction that it will need to be a online paid account at that point rather than have access to a free account for offline use. That way the hardware still has value and still generates income for Nintendo but the banned account they don't have to refund. Of course that could mean a greater loss for many people who have digital purchases linked to that account. It feels like the account should not be banned completely but banned for a time period i.e. 1 year.

I think Nintendo are too aggressive with their current process and it certainly puts me off the Switch 2 a bit.

I've already seen one person on youtube who had his Switch 2 banned and then went out and bought another Switch 2 which he won't use his mig-switch cart with. He has loads of original Switch cartridges which he showed on screen he just wanted the convenience of not having to carry them all about with him. Of course digital purchases and a big sd card was another option.

Re: Third-Party Launch Games On Switch 2 Reportedly Sold "Very Low Numbers"

BonzoBanana

This news reminds me of Skyrim which is one of my favourite games and I tried it on Switch and felt it was technically inferior and using the Switch controls wasn't as good at all. It felt like a much inferior package overall. I think that game had fairly low sales on Switch 1. They never followed up with versions of Fallout 3 or Fallout 4 on the Switch. It felt like they tested the water with Skyrim and then realised it was too low a return for the development time.

Re: Third-Party Launch Games On Switch 2 Reportedly Sold "Very Low Numbers"

BonzoBanana

I must admit when I buy a Switch 2 it will be for Switch 2 exclusive games. I'm not interested in super expensive versions of PC games that run ok but aren't great examples of that game. I feel like this is common though as the people who buy consoles at launch are typically huge gaming enthusiasts who have multiple systems so have seen many of these games before. I'm unsure at this point if games like Cyberpunk on a full cartridge are also selling very low compared to key cards. Personally I didn't even like Cyberpunk or GTA V for that matter which were huge games but I personally didn't like.

Of course this will mean a slow down of third party titles I guess but personally I don't care about this but I guess it could effect the platform's number of console sales. At this point all I want is a Switch 2 with Mario Kart World but I've seen quite a lot of negativity about Mario Kart World that at this point its very easy to resist. I suspect the Switch 2 package will be more compelling next year.

Re: Nintendo Reportedly Banning Switch 2's Using MIG Cartridges

BonzoBanana

@sethfranum

I was in no way saying the movie was legal just stating a comparison of copyright infringement and how unlikely it would be that your TV would be bricked.

As for EULA/TOS if they conflict with consumer law they are not enforceable so denying the ability to use hardware could be illegal and the consumer may have a right to a refund. I suspect this may well be tested later on in some countries and Nintendo may have to re-activate some consoles for online functionality for those who used their own backups at least but we shall see. It's an expensive hardware device and may not legally be able to claim they are denying use of the software when that software is linked to an expensive hardware device. I certainly think they can deny access to their online account though its just denying use of the hardware completely could be an issue. Maybe Nintendo will change slightly what they do. In the UK and Europe its legal to use backups of software you own. How this applies to a console I don't know but there will be updates to this story I'm sure.

Re: Nintendo Reportedly Banning Switch 2's Using MIG Cartridges

BonzoBanana

I've just thought in some countries Nintendo's terms and conditions may be illegal, preventing such a device from being used. You would think cancelling the Nintendo account maybe legal for breaching the terms and conditions but rendering the device unusable may be illegal so in some countries maybe people will be entitled to a refund. Can you imagine a situation where you are watching a downloaded torrent movie and it bricks your TV for watching it? Maybe you download a pc game as a torrent and it bricks your pc when you play it? I think this is a news story that is going to feature time and time again as people get angry about their Switch 2's made unusable even with games they own but just wanted to use more conveniently.

None of these people have hacked the Switch 2 or made any attempt to bypass the Switch 2 normal protection. They have just inserted a cartridge. I had a 3DS game I bought from Aliexpress which appeared to be fake but worked. I would have been annoyed if Nintendo bricked my 3DS because of it. This will mean surely people will avoid Chinese imports of Switch 1 games too. What if one of your Switch 1 games is not legit and is about to brick your Switch 2?

Switch 2 is a little worrying in how aggressive Nintendo is with software protection and what if they get it wrong and think a legal cartridge is a fake cartridge by mistake and brick a huge number of users unfairly?

Maybe its just better to run Switch 1 games on the Switch 1 even with inferior frame rates.

Re: Nintendo Reportedly Banning Switch 2's Using MIG Cartridges

BonzoBanana

Shame that some have legally backed up their cartridges so they can use a mig-card on the go that has all their cart games on. It would have been good if Nintendo only banned the consoles that were using the same dumped software rather than software that is owned by the user. They are all digitally different so its one thing to ban a console's online feature if its the same software as a 1000 other consoles but another thing if its only used on one specific console.

I suppose with all these online banned consoles now it should accelerate mod development and hacking the system as there will be lots of unusable switch 2's about to experiment on.
