I have been considering cancelling my pre-order as I guess I don't really need another mini console... Given the price it is possible to get burned on products like this as an early adopter (see Neo Geo Mini, PS classic). This just complicates the decision!
I'm quite keen on Psikyo Shooting Stars Bravo. I had a couple of the titles on the last compilation but none of these. Just perfect for Flip Grip and my rotating TV!
The Metroid Prime games have taken a while to get their hooks into me despite buying them at launch. Only recently finished the original on Gamecube! I've recently been playing the rather weird sequel too. I'm stuck on a MP3 boss, ?Mogenar so probably I should give that a go again. Hopefully I probably have enough time to do them justice before MP4.
@Dirty0814 I've noticed these trends. Nintendo IPs and exclusives are always a great strength. There is probably an opportunity for them here as you say.
Although rather negative I do think they have a point. I feel like most of the home Nintendo consoles I have owned have had a good first 2 or 3 years before support from third parties gets less healthy and they slowly die with a couple of leaner years when being an owner is less interesting. I'm hoping the Switch won't suffer this as it has far better third party support on the eShop and there is the prospect of an upgraded model to spark interest again.
@Vriess And it is on discount. Not that I will be getting it. I'm tempted by Blasphemous on discount (liked the demo) but I've got plenty backlog to attend to. @Murbs
"The banks of physical media we’ve built up over the years will invariably end up in landfill when our descendants see no value in them" So much truth I this article and statement! Whilst the collector in us all is encouraged by seeing the seeming appreciation in the price of some old games, the fact is that these prices depend on the finding the person to whom that title is worth that lofty figure. Almost all these material things ultimately pass out of importance with time. I gather Elvis memorabilia is starting to fetch less on the open market as inevitably the fans who grew up with him age and sadly die. This reduces the number of people collecting and frankly releases collections back to the market. I'm sure the same will be true of beloved physical video games. That said, I learned a little hard lesson in digital media recently - my New 3DS XL defied Nintendo's attempts to fix it, and the replacement returned to me with no way to restore the numerous saved games, including Majora's Mask and The Minish Cap poised close to completion! Hurrah then for the Samus Returns cartridge which allowed me to step back to where I had been. Enjoy your collections folks, but ultimately memories mean more. 😀
I played this on Virtual Console Arcade on Wii. Fun but oh my word it is indeed hard. I think I altered the number of lives to 100 and still got stuck. The rewind and 2 hit outfit will be most welcome.
@KevTastic84 Yes, I got it today in the Argos clearance sale for £20. Played for a while without updating just so I can "feel the benefit" of the update. 😁
@basilpesto Hey, it's great to see you here covering some Nintendo again! Thanks for the review. Any chance of a Red Steel retro re-review just for old times sake?
@countzero This. I really quite liked Other M. I though they made some brave choices in going for the "cinematic" story style and unique gameplay approach. I found it refreshingly different.
Worth noting that Hotline Miami titles are on sale on PlayStation Network right now. Picked up Hotline Miami (crossbuy) to play on Vita for only £2.49.
@JasonLee99 I wish I had the time (and energy) to try what you are doing, I'm sure there is fun to be had revisiting some of these titles. Good on you.
@NintendoByNature @Sunsy I certainly haven't been overjoyed by the NES games on this service, and admit I haven't spent too long on them at this point... But Vice: Project Doom is my kind of obscure and I did enjoy my five minutes with it last night when I found it there. Quite impressive!
@antdickens Yup, that is where I'm at with this. I've never used a real PC Engine but the small number of games I have downloaded from the VC (on the sound advice of this very site) have been great! This is getting me from nostalgia for the Wii/U Virtual Console as well as the early 90's gaming vibe... Must stay strong...
@antdickens I certainly appreciate the heads up about orders being live. Been reading since the VC reviews days and this is right up my street. I'd love to buy one but I already have a clutch of mini consoles I'm not using often enough. Can I stop myself?
@gaga64 Gosh - hadn't known about Clu Clu Land being in Animal Crossing. Being a rotten cheat, I only remember unlocking NES games available through the Action Replay disc I got on a magazine cover. I don't remember Clu Clu Land D being among them. This article attached seems to suggest there were also games on the memory card that shipped with it which I didn't know either (in fact, I think I may have formatted my memory card before use - doh!). https://www.technobuffalo.com/animal-crossing-full-nes-games-gamecube
@carmudgeon I only recently discovered Dodonpachi - such a great shooter. Makes me want to mount a TV on a rotating mount to play other shooters FlipGrip style on the bigger screen...
I just completed Super Castlevania IV (a journey I started in Wii VC), have fought my way to the final mission of Soldier Blade and dabbled in a bit of Yoshi's Island...
@BigE Me too. I've not managed to complete XC1, but I am close with XCX... I gather the stand alone Torna episode which is available at retail is much shorter and just as good. I might go for it first.
So, that will be the Celeste sale I've been waiting for since release. The question is, will I have the time and skill to play it?
EDIT: Ooh. Ditto The Messenger.
Wow. Must be tough making any change to much loved IPs in this current day and age. I wonder if the visionary designs of LoZ: Wind Waker would have survived the backlash if it had been released these days?
@KingMike I don't know about Marilyn Monroe, but I seem to remember reading that red clambering ninja enemies needed changed to green to avoid looking like Sp*derman!
Shinobi on the Wii Arcade VC laid waste to me! Even with 100 lives! Save states might make it possible...
@leo13 I agree the demo was bad. It definitely stopped me buying the game. I loved Xenoblade Chronicles X and can't see why it wouldn't be adapted to Switch.
I played this on the Acorn Archimedes port back in the day. The Arc was relatively starved of many ports from the Amiga et al so games like this were always welcome. I enjoyed what I played of it, but it certainly was tricky. Briefly revisited the Megadrive version recently. Not sure I'd have the patience to spend long on it now, but it hits the nostalgia point.
I can't watch the video above right now, but I have to say I actually quite liked Metroid: Other M. In fact, I completed it and I have yet to finish any of the Prime games... although I am almost through the first game and plan to finish MP3: Corruption if I can.
Lots of new Switch titles as ever, but I find it hard to get excited about them - reading the PR blurb about each one I find myself glazing over... Probably I just don't know enough about the current indie games "scene" and am looking for recognisable established franchises that are not forthcoming. Just as well really as I really have a massive backlog needing addressed!
I understand the price tag (niche product), but it is a shame it can't be a bit cheaper - I want it but don't need it! Was playing Metroid Prime on my GC only this weekend using an Action Replay cheat on the old CRT which my partner has marked for death... (no, I've never completed it despite having it almost 17 years).
whispers I found the original WiiU game levels reasonably hard. Got frustrated by the need to repeat levels I had completed when I failed a later one... I think perhaps I'm just bad at these games...
Gonna break this collection out for a co-op gaming session with a friend tomorrow night. Which titles do folks think I should start with? I imagine Prehistoric Isle would be the first I want to try, then maybe one of the arcade Ikari Warriors games...

Re: Nintendo Download: 20th February (Europe)
@Angelic_Lapras_King @khululy
Thanks! As I have no other console option I think awaiting the inevitable eshop sale seems reasonable! 👍

Also, is DMC III a reasonable place to dip a toe in this series? I quite enjoyed the Bayonetta Games...

I played the WiiU demo back at the time and must admit for all the high production values, originality and zaniness on offer I felt it wasn't for me.

I picked one up swept up in the moment, but now I'm not sure my family or I need it! Good deal.
Re: Nintendo Download: 31st October (Europe)
@step_over OK, so not great stock locally. Got Links Awakening and MM2 however which will do!
Re: Nintendo Download: 31st October (Europe)
@step_over Great, thanks. Will try and nab LM3 and Links Awakening!
Re: Nintendo Download: 31st October (Europe)
@step_over Oooh. Sounds good. Can only seem to find MK8 and Splatoon 2 in that offer online. Maybe I need to go to the store.

I'm slightly shocked by just how many of these I own, whether on Switch or WiiU/3DS. Most are great, but quite a few are in my backlog anyway...
