UK physical chart data is now in for the week ending 7th August, revealing that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is once again leading the way for Nintendo.
Despite being more than four years old at this point, the game was the second best-selling physical release in the UK last week. Only F1 2021 managed to outsell it, which incidentally secured the number one spot for a third consecutive week.
Five Switch exclusives can be found in the top ten this week, with others like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Golf: Super Rush just missing out (those two are in 11th and 12th respectively). Spiritfarer is the only top 40 newcomer; its new physical release earned it 35th place with the Switch version comfortably outselling its PS4 counterpart.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:

Mario Kart 9 is a myth at this point.
Nintendo will just keep re-releasing 8 on any future hardware they make. XD
The cold, hard truth is that Mario Kart 9 is never happening.
lol MK8D is the GTA V of the Nintendo Switch.
It's not four years old - it's seven, and a representation of how Nintendo repeatedly kick Wii U owners in the proverbial nuts. I'm tired of them re-releasing games I already have on an older system. I am not paying twice for the same content. It's infuriating. I get it, there are a lot of excellent games on the Wii U that a lot of people didn't play. But I don't understand why I should be forgotten about as a loyal customer. I've lost count of how many games have been re-released which means Nintendo have not had to develop a new version so there are a number of game franchises (like the 7 years since a new Mario Kart) for which we are still waiting for new content. It wouldn't be so bad if there was some sort of scheme in place for people who own Wii U versions but this is Nintendo, the king of the 'double dip'.
MK9 isn't a myth. We're just not gonna see it until Nintendo's next machine. There's absolutely no reason for them to release a MK9 on Switch. Yes some of us played it on Wii U first, but let's face it, we're a rare breed.
Now what I find strange is that they haven't capitalized on that enormous install base with a new DLC expansion.
Lol. Of course there will be a MK9. They usually come with new hardware though.
Microsoft is killing it on the Switch!
Why does one of the best playing/looking games on Switch have to be a 2014 Wii U game?
I know it's amazing but you can only go around the same courses for so many years
It's like driving on autopilot these days...
@B4L0R_CLUB Ironically the Wii U and 3DS gen let you get games at discount if you owned it on either machine. Not as good as Sony's buy once, own it on your PS3, PSP/Vita and PS4. Nintendo could have easily done a "just for you" offer when buying games already owned on your account from that gen. They've been their old arrogant 90's selves this gen, just because they got lucky by exploiting cheap hardware.
F1 2021 for Switch when?
Heck, I'd take F1 2001 right now. Just give me a decent semi-sim racing game on a physical cartridge... Someone... PLEASE!
@GrailUK yeah, Idk where in the world people are getting the idea that MK9 is not happening. Nintendo ported 8 to Switch because it was on its worst selling system. It's really that simple.
Nearly spat my drink out laughing at people saying MK9 won’t happen. Absolutely nothing is more certain than Mario Kart 9. MK is pretty much their biggest franchise now. The only question is when.
@Heavyarms55
“ Yes some of us played it on Wii U first, but let's face it, we're a rare breed.”
This is true. Them rereleasing Wii U games on Switch (by my reckoning, 12 out of over 60 Nintendo published games for the system) has never bothered me either. It’s just good business.
@CactusMan Perhaps. Nintendo is relatively small when compared to monsters like MS and Sony. And they are less willing to contract out the work too. Or so it seems.
Sheesh... we'll never get a Mario Kart 9 if number 8 keeps selling like this.
Wait, no Fifa in the top 10? I can't believe it.
MK games have always been evergreen titles for Nintendo, but man, MK8D is a whole other beast.
We can be upset about how the success of this (plus Tour, assumedly) is delaying the release of an MK9, but Nintendo made the right business call giving MK8 a second life on Switch.
No COD?! No FIFA?! Have I died and gone to heaven?
I think the fact there's been no MK8 DLC must tell us that 9 is in development.. As DLC would be like printing money. Id pay a tenner for an extra cup
@Ejadaddy FIFA will be back next week or 2 no doubt. Premier League starts this Saturday.
3D World + Bowsers Fury back in the top 10 again 6 months after release wow
At this rate, Nintendo will never release Mario Kart 9. Stop buying 8 people! I kid because I never bought 8 on the Switch after pouring hundreds of hours into the WiiU title.
@Ejadaddy let’s kick the ball this way! No no no, let’s kick it this way.. life-like sports games are the worst.. golf sucks too - unless it’s Mario Golf
@Bibi it should be a Nintendo Kart game. I want Samus in her gunship and Falcon too.
Mario Kart 8 is a beast. I don't know why people complain about it selling this well, it's a tough act to follow, it's the perfect Mario Kart, and the more people want to join the fun, the better.
@B4L0R_CLUB I doubled dip for MK8, and I don't regret it. Wii U ports are really good, beacuse they add extra stuff to the games, not like the ports in other consoles, that only have a better HD filter. Stop complaining and play something.
Mario kart 8/deluxe is up to 8th now on the best selling video games of all time list with over 45,000,000 million sales. Will probably beat that Pokémon game in 7th soon at this rate.
Mario Kart Tour= MK9 and Home Circuit= MK10...we're so spoilt having 3 Mario Karts this generation aren't we
I bought Mario Kart 8 Deluxe a few months ago, mostly to be able to play with more people (it's a wonder if I ever get do Wii U couch gaming with someone). Despite that, I still keep the Wii U version because it was the first game I got at launch, so it has sentimental value to me.
Anyway, good for you, UK. I want to believe you're finally seeing the ripoff FIFA really is.
@Edu23XWiiU That's great for you - each to their own. However, I retain my right to an opinion, and that's all it is. An opinion. One I can offer without being rude to others. I've played plenty - thanks for the concern - but I will never pay twice for a game. Normally the 'additional content' you speak of just includes the DLC from the original games and guess what? I paid for those too! Even if there is new content, it doesn't justify the £40/50 outlay. A good example of this is the 3D World port. Awesome game, but I have it on Wii U and I'm not spending £40/50 just to be able to play Bowser's Fury. Same for MK8, I can just boot up my WiiU, why would I pay £50? Enjoy your day, and maybe rethink your responses. I don't understand the need to be rude.
@B4L0R_CLUB I owned (still own)) a Wii U and Mario Kart 8. So it didn't bother me that the game (or any other Wii U games) were ported to the Switch. I either double dipped on them or moved on.
I also never felt Nintendo owed me anything just because I invested in one of their least popular systems. I love they're products. But I'm also not delusional to the fact that they're a business and are gonna make decisions, ultimately, based on their own interests.
F1 2021 seems to be doing better than normal for F1 games, I guess Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport being MIA is helping it get quite the boost.
@UmbreonsPapa Same. In fact I've owned every single Nintendo console, and still do. I don't feel that Nintendo owe me anything, I just don't understand why they think I should pay twice for the same content. A discount scheme would be a welcome change - and it's not a big ask since other companies already do it (or go even further in some cases). As i said in my original post, I get it - there is a lot of content on the Wii U that can be ported to Switch as it did not sell. It's business. The knock on effect of this is that we don't get any new content - as in the case of Mario Kart 8 which is now 7 years old.
@sanderev check the top of the charts again 😜
Edit: my bad, misread F1 2021 as FIFA. There's a reason they say half of seeing is actually just remembering 😅🤦🏼♂️😆
@Otoemetry I think it's just because Fifa 22 is about to be released soon.
@B4L0R_CLUB you're the one that's being rude, and have superiority complex. I only highlighted facts: MK8 Deluxe has new characters, and a revamped Battle Mode with exclusive stages. And the same can be said about all Wii U ports so far. Not to mention, the portability of the Switch, to play those games anywhere.
@Edu23XWiiU You have a very strange definition of 'rude'. I've been nothing of the sort. You've been fast and loose with the (unsubstantiated) insults, on the other hand. Have a great day.
@B4L0R_CLUB Yeaaaah, sure, Mr. Sokusoo raee.
@Edu23XWiiU great comeback kid. Bored of this exchange - if you can't be decent I have nothing more to add. Again, and for the final time, have a great day.
